JD 96 (11/2020): Partially destemmed and brought up in 20% new French oak, the 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a smoky, powerful bouquet of mulled black cherries, mulberries, candied violets, licorice, and forest floor. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, gorgeous wine with silky tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, plenty of structure, and a great, great finish. This is seriously good juice that's going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. (Drink between 2023-2043)
VM 94 (11/2022): The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a sensual nose with vivacious red berry fruit, orange pith and light tertiary scents, becoming more and more loamy whilst retaining delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, creamy in texture that belies the structure underneath. Judiciously spiced towards the finish with just a very subtle menthol note, this is a classy offering. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. (Drink between 2026-2048) Neal Martin.
JM 93 (9/2022): A deep and slightly darker purple, with more reduction on the nose. The fruit builds impressively behind. When the reduction lifts, as I think it will, this will be a wine of great joy. Dark strawberry notes at the back of the palate and a ripe sensuality at the long finish. The reduction just takes the edge off at the moment. Drink from 2032. |

| VM 92+ (3/2023): The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru, which was raised in 18% new oak, is a wine that I loved when I tasted it from barrel. Now with a couple of years in bottle, I feel the nose has closed down a little, yet still offers some captivating black cherry, briary and light cassis aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite linear on the entry. It gains weight towards the finish, while retaining satisfying weight. A distinctly floral nose offers up a beguiling blend of very ripe red and dark pinot fruit, sandalwood, Asian-style tea and plenty of spice whiffs. There is a highly refined mouthfeel to the rich, suave and super-seductive medium-bodied flavors that tighten up quickly on the balanced and impressively persistent finale. This youthfully austere effort is very Suchots in character and an excellent example that should age gracefully for the next 15+ years. Drink 2033+. Outstanding! |

WA 90-92 (1/2020): The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes soars from the glass with a rich bouquet of cassis, plums and dark berries mingled with notes of rose petal, loamy soil and grilled meats. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and sapid, with fine concentration, ripe tannins and an expansive finish. Broader and more muscular by comparison with the finer-boned, more incisive Evocelles, this is a classic expression of Gevrey-Chambertin.
BH 89-91 (1/2020): This is aromatically similar to the Côte de Nuits-Villages except that the sauvage component is even more prominent. The solidly constituted medium-bodied flavors possess an interesting mouthfeel in that it's at once caressing yet markedly powerful, all wrapped in a mildly warm finale. The tannins are firm but well-buffered and this could be enjoyed on the younger side if that's your preference. (Drink starting 2026)
VM 89-91 (1/2020): The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes sees 40% new oak. It has a beautifully defined bouquet of pure raspberry preserve, cranberry and floral scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus-fresh opening and marmalade and tangerine notes infusing the red fruit. The pretty, very expressive finish maybe just misses the depth of, say, the 2016. Still, this is a lovely wine. Neal Martin. |

From a parcel of 58-year-old vines, this is a quintessentially elegant Volnay that should also drink well young. |

BH 91 (4/2020): A restrained if clearly ripe nose is comprised by notes of cassis, black cherry, violet and pretty rose petal hints. The sleeker and more refined is perhaps not quite as concentrated flavors also possess a seductive texture and even more minerality, all wrapped in a mildly warm and youthfully austere finale that is slightly firmer. BH 92 (4/2020): (near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South.) Like the Clos de Vougeot, there is a very subtle trace of volatile acidity on the very spicy and distinctly ripe aromas of plum liqueur, cassis and warm earth scents. There is a high level of ripeness on the palate as well to the mocha-infused big-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the very firm if noticeably warm finale. I suspect that this will eventually come together though it's presently somewhat disjointed. Drink 2033+. |

WA 93+ (1/2020): The 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is the last time Boillot will produce this appellation, made from purchased grapes. Offering up aromas of dark berries, cassis, baking chocolate, candied peel and licorice, the wine is medium to full-bodied, muscular and chalky, with fine depth at the core, succulent acids and a long finish.
BH 93 (4/2020): ( from equally sized parcels in both Rugiens Hauts and Bas that measure <1 ha.) A brooding and quite reserved nose grudgingly offers up pretty aromas of red and black cherry liqueur-like aromas that are cut with both spice and floral influences. There is a lovely sense of refinement to the intense and well-detailed larger-scaled flavors that brim with minerality on the powerful, serious and built-to-age finale. This too is well-worth searching out provided that you have the patience to let it slumber for at least 8 to 10 years first. Drink 2033+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red cherries and raspberry laced with blood orange. It feels very tight, a little muscular in style, a Grand Cru that is built for the long term. JD 98 (11/2021): The 2018 Volnay 1er Clos Du Chateau Des Ducs is more expressive and showy right out of the gate and has a complex, sexy, incredibly impressive style that's a joy to drink. Ripe cherries, mulberries, rose petals, Asian spices, dried herbs, and incense all emerge from this beauty, and it's as seamless and layered as they come, with ripe, velvety tannins, no hard edges, medium to full body, and flawless balance. It's already drinking nicely yet will cruise for 20+ years in cold cellars.
VM 92 (11/2022): The 2018 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs 1er Cru has a little more transparency and elegance on the nose compared to its peers, brambly red fruit with a touch of sous-bois and tobacco leaf. The palate is well-defined with fine tannins. A crisp line of acidity imparts tension with more sapidity than its peers. Harmonious, fine weight in the mouth with a Pommard-like grip on the finish, this is a finely crafted, commendable Volnay, one that defies the negative tropes of the vintage. | JD 95 (11/2021): The 2018 Volnay 1er Les Mitans comes from a tiny 0.39 hectare of vines planted in 1952 and 1976 and located on a south-facing slope. The soils here are more brown clay with some underlying limestone, and the wine is destemmed and brought up in 15% new French oak. It's another wine that needs air, continuing to show well over the multiple days I had the bottle open. Beautiful ripe black cherry and black raspberry fruits as well as darker, earthy herbs, camphor, and spicy wood all emerge from the glass, and it's medium-bodied, with a wonderfully pure, elegant style, nicely integrated acidity, and outstanding length. As with the other 2018s here, the purity and precision are spot on. Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 10-15. |

| VM 92-94 (1/2020): The 2018 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru comes from Lamarche’s 0.30 hectares of vine. It has a little more horsepower than the Echezeaux, scents of orange peel and a light ash-like aroma infusing the red fruit. Fine definition here, if not profound complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, lithe tannins. This is a sleek and silky smooth Grands Echezeaux with a lovely touch of spice that bursts through on the finish. Give this two to three years in bottle, as it is will be early-drinking for a Grand Cru, though I suspect it will drink well for many years. Neal Martin. |

| BH 90-93 (1/2020): A deft application of wood sets off fresh and surprisingly elegant aromas that include the essence of red cherry, earth and a whiff of newly turned earth. The supple and rounded medium-bodied flavors are not especially dense but I like the vibrancy and texture while the impressively long bitter cherry pit-tinged finish tightens up substantially. Very good quality here as well. |

| VM 92-94 (1/2020): The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune La Dominode 1er Cru, picked on September 1 at 13.5% potential alcohol, is tightly coiled and more backward than the Aux Gravins, ergo I expect that this will require more bottle age. There are enticing blackberry and wild strawberry fruit aromas here, but they need time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins and a superb line of acidity that imparts a sense of energy from the start to the saline finish, which is tangy and vivacious.
