The equally refined if a bit less mineral-inflected flavors possess excellent verve on the long and slightly less structured finish that also evidences a touch of warmth. JD 96 (11/2020): Partially destemmed and brought up in 20% new French oak, the 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a smoky, powerful bouquet of mulled black cherries, mulberries, candied violets, licorice, and forest floor. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, gorgeous wine with silky tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, plenty of structure, and a great, great finish. This is seriously good juice that's going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. (Drink between 2023-2043)
VM 94 (11/2022): The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a sensual nose with vivacious red berry fruit, orange pith and light tertiary scents, becoming more and more loamy whilst retaining delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, creamy in texture that belies the structure underneath. Judiciously spiced towards the finish with just a very subtle menthol note, this is a classy offering. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. (Drink between 2026-2048) Neal Martin.
JM 93 (9/2022): A deep and slightly darker purple, with more reduction on the nose. The fruit builds impressively behind. When the reduction lifts, as I think it will, this will be a wine of great joy. Dark strawberry notes at the back of the palate and a ripe sensuality at the long finish. The reduction just takes the edge off at the moment. Drink from 2032. |

| VM 92+ (3/2023): The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru, which was raised in 18% new oak, is a wine that I loved when I tasted it from barrel. Now with a couple of years in bottle, I feel the nose has closed down a little, yet still offers some captivating black cherry, briary and light cassis aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite linear on the entry. It gains weight towards the finish, while retaining satisfying weight. A distinctly floral nose offers up a beguiling blend of very ripe red and dark pinot fruit, sandalwood, Asian-style tea and plenty of spice whiffs. There is a highly refined mouthfeel to the rich, suave and super-seductive medium-bodied flavors that tighten up quickly on the balanced and impressively persistent finale. WA 90-92 (1/2020): The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes soars from the glass with a rich bouquet of cassis, plums and dark berries mingled with notes of rose petal, loamy soil and grilled meats. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and sapid, with fine concentration, ripe tannins and an expansive finish. Broader and more muscular by comparison with the finer-boned, more incisive Evocelles, this is a classic expression of Gevrey-Chambertin.
BH 89-91 (1/2020): This is aromatically similar to the Côte de Nuits-Villages except that the sauvage component is even more prominent. The solidly constituted medium-bodied flavors possess an interesting mouthfeel in that it's at once caressing yet markedly powerful, all wrapped in a mildly warm finale. The tannins are firm but well-buffered and this could be enjoyed on the younger side if that's your preference. (Drink starting 2026)
VM 89-91 (1/2020): The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes sees 40% new oak. It has a beautifully defined bouquet of pure raspberry preserve, cranberry and floral scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus-fresh opening and marmalade and tangerine notes infusing the red fruit. The pretty, very expressive finish maybe just misses the depth of, say, the 2016. Still, this is a lovely wine. Neal Martin. |

Unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berries, plums, raw cocoa and sweet soil tones, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, its concentrated core of vibrant fruit underlined by succulent acids and framed by chalky tannins. This is a brilliant wine that's worth a special effort to seek out. |

WA 94 (1/2020): Invariably a highlight of the portfolio, Boillot's 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets derives from a low-yielding 60-are parcel of 55-year-old vines. Unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berries, plums, raw cocoa and sweet soil tones, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, its concentrated core of vibrant fruit underlined by succulent acids and framed by chalky tannins. This is a brilliant wine that's worth a special effort to seek out. |

On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with an ample chassis of powdery tannins, fine concentration and succulent acids. From a parcel of 58-year-old vines, this is a quintessentially elegant Volnay that should also drink well young. |

WA 93 (1/2020): The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets exhibits lovely aromas of raspberries and cherries mingled with orange rind, spice and raw cocoa. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and fine-boned, from more calcium-rich soils than Les Chevrets and built around bright acids and fine, chalky tannins.
BH 91 (4/2020): A restrained if clearly ripe nose is comprised by notes of cassis, black cherry, violet and pretty rose petal hints. The sleeker and more refined is perhaps not quite as concentrated flavors also possess a seductive texture and even more minerality, all wrapped in a mildly warm and youthfully austere finale that is slightly firmer. This too is lovely. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! |

WA 94 (1/2020): The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is showing very well, soaring from the glass with aromas of wild berries, rose petals, violets, orange rind and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, with lively acids and a powdery but elegantly refined chassis of structuring tannins, concluding with a long and resonant finish.
BH 92 (4/2020): ( from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis.) This plays right on the edge of volatile acidity with its nose of poached plum, black raspberry and warm earth. The middle weight flavors are not especially dense but do possess a highly attractive mouthfeel while displaying good power on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish. This moderately firm effort is somewhat awkward at present, but I suspect that it will recover with age. Drink 2033+. |

WA 94 (1/2020): The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, cherries, dark chocolate, rich loamy soil and creamy new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, nicely concentrated and fine-boned, with a deep core of fruit, exquisitely refined tannins and a long, sweetly fruited finish.
BH 92 (4/2020): (near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South.) Like the Clos de Vougeot, there is a very subtle trace of volatile acidity on the very spicy and distinctly ripe aromas of plum liqueur, cassis and warm earth scents. There is a high level of ripeness on the palate as well to the mocha-infused big-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the very firm if noticeably warm finale. I suspect that this will eventually come together though it's presently somewhat disjointed. Drink 2033+. |

| BH 97 (1/2020): There are three barrels of the 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru this year, two of them new and the third four years old. This was displaying some reduction at the time of my visit, although underneath there is intense black and red fruit plus a subtle marine influence of oyster shell and seaweed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red cherries and raspberry laced with blood orange. It feels very tight, a little muscular in style, a Grand Cru that is built for the long term. But will it surpass the spellbinding Malconsorts? Drink 2025-2050. |

The medium-bodied palate offers sappy black fruit, displaying more sapidity than Les Bousselottes and fanning out gently toward the finish. The medium-bodied palate features very supple tannins and pitch-perfect acidity, although perhaps at the moment the Les Saint-Georges demonstrates more complexity and terroir expression toward the finish. | BH 91-94 (1/2020): This is the first wine to display any appreciable wood and menthol characters and here it's not subtle though to be clear, it doesn't dominate the very ripe liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry, cassis, floral and plenty of sauvage nuances. The sleekly textured and impressively intense large-scaled flavors possess evident power on the dusty, serious and palate coating finish that is definitely quite grippy and a bit coarse but the supporting tannins seem to be mature. I like the overall fruit/tannin/sap balance and while it will take extended bottle age, this should eventually come together. Drink 2038+. |

VM 92 (11/2022): The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and touches of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, saline and slightly peppery with a structured, quite firm yet balanced finish. Give this another couple of years in bottle. JD 98 (11/2021): The 2018 Volnay 1er Clos Du Chateau Des Ducs is more expressive and showy right out of the gate and has a complex, sexy, incredibly impressive style that's a joy to drink. Ripe cherries, mulberries, rose petals, Asian spices, dried herbs, and incense all emerge from this beauty, and it's as seamless and layered as they come, with ripe, velvety tannins, no hard edges, medium to full body, and flawless balance. It's already drinking nicely yet will cruise for 20+ years in cold cellars.
VM 92 (11/2022): The 2018 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs 1er Cru has a little more transparency and elegance on the nose compared to its peers, brambly red fruit with a touch of sous-bois and tobacco leaf. The palate is well-defined with fine tannins. A crisp line of acidity imparts tension with more sapidity than its peers. Harmonious, fine weight in the mouth with a Pommard-like grip on the finish, this is a finely crafted, commendable Volnay, one that defies the negative tropes of the vintage. | JD 95 (11/2021): The 2018 Volnay 1er Les Mitans comes from a tiny 0.39 hectare of vines planted in 1952 and 1976 and located on a south-facing slope. The soils here are more brown clay with some underlying limestone, and the wine is destemmed and brought up in 15% new French oak. It's another wine that needs air, continuing to show well over the multiple days I had the bottle open. As with the other 2018s here, the purity and precision are spot on. Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 10-15. |

There are enticing blackberry and wild strawberry fruit aromas here, but they need time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins and a superb line of acidity that imparts a sense of energy from the start to the saline finish, which is tangy and vivacious. JM 95-98 (11/2019): A great vintage for these cooler sites. What an explosion of fruit! A dense full but not exaggerated purple, then the wine goes back into its shell a little, but with gorgeous harmony, a match for his neighbour’s wine. How to explain all the fruits? More on the darker side but intense pinpricks of red notes too and a most harmonious, indeed blissful, finish.
VM 95-97 (1/2020): The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 1er Cru, matured in 100% new oak, has a more introverted, backward bouquet than the Beaumonts. It offers precocious blackberry and raspberry preserve scents, then crushed stone aromas. This feels mercurial as it develops floral aromas of incense and crushed violet with time in glass. The palate is well balanced, intense and supremely detailed, and there is outstanding tension and real heft on the finish. This Cros Parantoux is a paradigm of the old "iron fist in a velvet glove" cliché. Neal Martin.
BH 93-96 (1/2020): Once again there is reduction present and here it's enough to mask the fruit though wisps of spice are perceptible. Otherwise there is fine richness and volume to the velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors that brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract before culminating in a very firm, youthfully austere and gorgeously persistent finish. But what impresses me the most is the strikingly fine depth and this outstanding effort should amply reward extended keeping. Drink 2033+. |

VM 95 (1/2024): The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Roumier offers copious amounts of black cherries and blueberry fruit. It is still a "baby", though that doesn't make it unenjoyable, even if you cannot help thinking that it needs at least another decade. The palate is framed by those succulent tannins, one of the tropes of the growing season. There's a little more glycerine than I remember, with a powerful and still almost overwhelming finish that prompts me to be just a little more cautious with my score. Tasted at Le Benaton in Beaune. BH 95 (1/2021): A very spicy and overtly floral nose consists of liqueur-like aromas of various red berries trimmed in hints of wood and menthol. There is a lovely sense of energy and delineation to the broad-shouldered yet relatively fine flavors that terminate in a beautifully textured, powerful and firm finish that possesses its usual level of youthful austerity. This very serious Bonnes Mares will also require extended keeping as it's every bit as structured as the Ruchottes.
WA 95 (1/2021): Opening in the glass with aromas of ripe red fruits, rose petals, peonies, orange rind and exotic spices, Roumier's 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is full-bodied, multidimensional and concentrated, with a rich and layered mid-palate, a muscular chassis of powdery tannin and a bright, mineral finish. This is very much built for the long haul, but it has taken the warm vintage in its stride. |

BH 97 (1/2021): Slightly more evident, though still quite subtle, wood frames the even spicier aromas of liqueur-like red and dark berry fruit, plum, anise, earth and lilac nuances. Here too there is a relatively supple mid-palate mouthfeel to the slightly finer broad-shouldered flavors that possess a gorgeous texture, all wrapped in a classy, sophisticated, stony, powerful and hugely long finish. This too is a knock-out and a one that should evolve glacially over a 20 to 30-year period as it's even a bit firmer than the Chambertin, which rarely occurs in my experience. (Drink starting 2040).
VM 96+ (11/2022): The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a magnificent bouquet. Dark berry fruit, crushed roses, minerals and incense soar from the glass. Wonderful definition. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and allspice, building in the mouth to a multi-dimensional finish that lingers tenderly. Outstanding.
