BH 94 (1/2018): (from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that all those that have died over the years have been replanted.) This is almost as elegant as the Griotte but with a different aromatic profile that runs more toward a slightly darker range of fruit, earth, game and discreet violet notes where there is again plenty of wood influence. There is good refinement to the pure and beautifully detailed big-bodied and impressively concentrated flavors that brim with palate coating dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine on the hugely long but not especially austere and slightly warm finale. A classic Roty Charmes. Drink 2030+. VM 94-97 (1/2017): Full ruby-red. Very pure but youthfully brooding aromas of black fruits, licorice, violet and minerals. Strikingly sappy and primary, conveying near-painful intensity to its tightly wound black fruit and saline mineral flavors. This complete, impeccably balanced Charmes-Chambertin expands spectacularly on the rising, palate-staining back end, saturating the taste buds and leaving the mouth vibrating. A perfect blueprint for a 25+-year wine. A good portion of these vines date back to the vineyard's original post-Phylloxera graftings in 1881, but as the family has never used pesticides or chemical fertilizers these old vines still routinely yield a healthy crop--35 hectoliters per hectare in 2015. | BH 92-94 (1/2019): (from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that those that have died over the years have been replanted.) A cool, elegant and restrained nose flashes an array of various red fruit scents that include cherry, raspberry and a hint of pomegranate, along with soft earth, spice and wood nuances. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the delicious, intense and well-detailed medium weight flavors that deliver fine depth and persistence on the well-balanced finish. Unusually for this wine, it's not as dense as the Griotte though it's perhaps a bit more refined than usual. Drink 2032+. |

| BH 91-93 (1/2020): (from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that those that have died over the years have been replanted.) This too is moderately toasty though still elegant with its combination of notably ripe red berry, plum, earth and soft floral-suffused nose. There is fine underlying tension to the broad-shouldered, concentrated and markedly powerful flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the bitter cherry pit finale where a touch of warmth slowly emerges as it sits on the palate. Drink 2033+. |

| BH 91-93 (1/2016): Deep ruby color. Once again there are prominent, but not dominant, notes of wood toast and menthol sitting atop the very ripe yet fresh and cool aromas of spicy and earthy black cherry liqueur-like nose. There is terrific punch and volume to the solidly well-concentrated medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality onto the palate coating, powerful and intense finish that remains impressively refined. Drink 2026+. Outstanding! |

Marsannay Le Clos de Jeu |
$64 |

|

WA 92 (1/2023): The 2020 Marsannay Clos de Jeu has turned out especially well, offering up aromas of sweet cherries, mulberries, licorice and toasty new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate that's deep and vibrant, with powdery tannins and a precise finish. VM 90 (1/2023): The 2020 Marsannay Clos de Jeu offers more red fruit on the nose than its Marsannay brethren, slightly savoury with crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, nicely proportioned with a more refined and tensile finish than other cuvées. Recommended. (Drink between 2025-2035). Neal Martin. BH 89 (1/2023): This is aromatically quite similar to the Boivin though with a note of red cherry coulis. The dense, powerful and muscular medium weight flavors are not quite as vibrant though they are just as firm, serious and youthfully austere on the better-balanced finale though note that there is a touch of warmth. (Drink starting 2030). |

Marsannay Les Ouzeloy |
$65 |

|
| |
| BH 89 (1/2013): Here the wood treatment is more discreet if not invisible as it outlines the otherwise ripe, pure and fresh aromas of red cherry liqueur and wet stone nuances. There is good volume to the very rich and concentrated flavors that possess plenty of extract that coats the mouth on the vibrant and persistent finish. The influence of old vines is quite evident in 2010. Worth considering. Note that initially there was a mild trace of reduction but I was able to come back to the bottle and it had dissipated; still I would advise decanting this if possible. (Drink starting 2016). |

Marsannay Les Ouzeloy |

WA 91+ (1/2023): The 2020 Marsannay Les Ouzeloy is showing very well, bursting with notes of dark berries and plums mingled with licorice and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with good concentration and powdery structuring tannins, it's built for the cellar. VM 87 (1/2023): The 2020 Marsannay Les Ouzeloy has a tight-knit nose with blueberry and boysenberry fruit that retain fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, figgy entry, perhaps quite Tuscan in style with good length on the finish. Fine. (Drink between 2025-2038). Neal Martin. BH 87 (1/2023): Completely opaque appearance. The very ripe yet quite fresh and expressive nose presents aromas of red and dark cherry, poached plum and newly turned earth. There is outstanding concentration to the suave, mouthcoating and almost thick flavors are buffered almost impressive intensity on the rustic, firm and moderately grippy finish that also comes up somewhat short. This is also completely atypical. (Drink starting 2028). |
