Wonderfully sappy and alive in the mouth, with Outstanding energy and tension to its dark fruit, floral and minerals flavors. Conveys a powerful impression of dry extract, not to mention an exhilarating balance of sweetness and acidity. Noble tannins coat every square millimeter of the palate on the building, vibrant aftertaste. A great vintage for this consistently Outstanding bottling: this may yet merit an even higher score 12 or 15 years down the road. |

| BH 93-95 (1/2016): ( from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that all those that have died over the years have been replanted.) Once again the adjective lavish is the best one to describe the oak treatment on the ultra-spicy, ripe and attractively fresh nose of black cherry, earth, underbrush and softly floral aromas. There is flat out incredible density to the extract rich and imposingly scaled flavors that completely coat the palate with sap before culminating in a velvety yet superbly intense finish that seems to just go on and on. Once again though note well that plenty of patience is going to be required before this incredible beauty of a Charmes is ready to roll. Drink 2031+. Don't miss! |

BH 94 (1/2018): (from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that all those that have died over the years have been replanted.) This is almost as elegant as the Griotte but with a different aromatic profile that runs more toward a slightly darker range of fruit, earth, game and discreet violet notes where there is again plenty of wood influence. There is good refinement to the pure and beautifully detailed big-bodied and impressively concentrated flavors that brim with palate coating dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine on the hugely long but not especially austere and slightly warm finale. A classic Roty Charmes. Drink 2030+.
VM 94-97 (1/2017): Full ruby-red. Very pure but youthfully brooding aromas of black fruits, licorice, violet and minerals. Strikingly sappy and primary, conveying near-painful intensity to its tightly wound black fruit and saline mineral flavors. This complete, impeccably balanced Charmes-Chambertin expands spectacularly on the rising, palate-staining back end, saturating the taste buds and leaving the mouth vibrating. A perfect blueprint for a 25+-year wine. A good portion of these vines date back to the vineyard's original post-Phylloxera graftings in 1881, but as the family has never used pesticides or chemical fertilizers these old vines still routinely yield a healthy crop--35 hectoliters per hectare in 2015. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the delicious, intense and well-detailed medium weight flavors that deliver fine depth and persistence on the well-balanced finish. Unusually for this wine, it's not as dense as the Griotte though it's perhaps a bit more refined than usual. Drink 2032+. |

VM 93 (3/2013): (75% new oak): Good dark red. Ripe, vibrant nose offers kirsch, redcurrant, cedar and a whiff of black pepper. At once silky-sweet and tangy, with lovely inner-mouth energy to the fine-grained red and darker fruit flavors. Notes of violet and minerals emerge with air. Finishes broad, lively and long, with harmonious acidity and ripe tannins giving the wine solid structure for aging. More refined than the 2011 version.
BH 92 (1/2013): (from 80+ year old vines.) An attractively layered and enveloping nose of black cherry and black raspberry is set off by subtle earth, spice and wood nuances. There is real verve to the wonderfully fresh and seductively textured flavors that exude a fine minerality on the balanced, delicious, dusty and long finish where a discreet if not invisible touch of wood appears. I like the balance and depth and the wood will probably integrate in time. Drink 2020+. Outstanding! |

Once again there are prominent, but not dominant, notes of wood toast and menthol sitting atop the very ripe yet fresh and cool aromas of spicy and earthy black cherry liqueur-like nose. There is terrific punch and volume to the solidly well-concentrated medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality onto the palate coating, powerful and intense finish that remains impressively refined. Drink 2026+. Outstanding! |
