BH 92-95 (1/2008): A completely backward but superbly complex nose displays layered aromas that run to game and underbrush as well as ripe red and dark berry fruit trimmed in a bit of wood toast that give way to rich, sweet and mouth coating big-bodied flavors that possess plenty of muscle and real volume on the explosive, textured and sappy finish that is impressively concentrated and wonderfully long. There is ample structure here as well though it's largely buffered by all of the mid-palate extract and I particularly like the depth. A serious wine that will live for decades. Drink 2021+. Don't miss!
VM 92+ (4/2009): Bright medium red. Captivating but reduced aromas of raspberry, smoked meat, dried flowers and spices. Juicy and vibrant but youthfully unforthcoming, offering excellent energy and grip to its intense raspberry, spice and stone flavors. Best today on the very long, lively aftertaste, which features substantial dusty tannins and terrific architecture for aging. I would not be surprised if this merited a score in the mid-90s a decade from now. |

BH 95 (1/2012): This too evidenced a hint of reduction that almost immediately dissipated. Otherwise, a background touch of wood highlights an expressive and impressively nuanced nose of red berry fruit that displays a broad range of spice and earth note. At present, this is really very backward though there is very good richness to the full-bodied and quite serious flavors that possess plenty of mid-palate extract that renders the dense but fine tannins almost invisible on the moderately austere and superbly long finish. This knockout Bèze has the balance and material to effortlessly improve over the next 12 to 15 years. Drink: 2020+.
VM 93+ (4/2011): Medium red. Multidimensional nose offers red fruits, menthol, smoked ham and wild herbs. Silky and tactile but classically dry. This showy, glyceral wine comes across as almost weightless, thanks to a powerful impression of smoky minerality. With aeration this very long and savory wine showed a compelling deep sweetness. But I wouldn't go near a bottle for at least eight years. |

VM 96 (3/2013): Bright, deep red. Pungent, vibrant nose combines dark raspberry, smoked meat, sandalwood, musky herbs, minerals and lower-pitched earth tones. Dense, sappy and expansive, boasting Outstanding lift and energy to its sharply delineated flavors of dark cherry, berry skin, flowers and white pepper. There's no easy sweetness to this great Clos de Beze, which finishes with noble tannins and compelling subtle persistence.
WS 95 (4/2013): Well-marked by oak, showing smoke and spice notes, with ample black cherry, currant and mineral flavors adding depth. The tannins are dominant but not overbearing, offering balance on the long finish of fruit and spice. Best from 2016 through 2032. 100 cases imported.
BH 94-97 (1/2012): (from a 1.29 ha parcel.) A highly spiced nose features notes of cool red currant, plum, violets and wet stone along with ample amounts of pungent Gevrey style earth. There is impressive richness and size to the powerful and well-concentrated large-scaled flavors that are underpinned by buried tannins before culminating in a huge finish that is also monumentally proportioned. This built-to-age beauty will also require a considerable amount of patience as it should see its 50th birthday without undue effort. Drink 2030+. Don't miss! |

BH 93-95 (1/2013): (from a 1.29 ha parcel). An exuberantly spicy, cool and airy nose that mixes a variety of wild red berries, humus and earth nuances where the latter component is also well-represented on the solidly well-detailed and powerful medium weight plus flavors that possess superb length. This is a big but not burly Bèze that is actually more a wine of finesse than outsized power and weight. Drink 2026+. Don't miss!
VM 93-95 (2/2013): Good deep red. Deeply pitched, slightly reduced nose dominated by smoky minerality, musky soil tones, game bird, gunflint and dried rose. Thick, sweet and very intense, offering terrific smoky, soil-driven complexity but not yet displaying its underlying fruit. Finishes with big, fine-grained tannins and excellent length. Doesn't yet show the sheer eclat of the Mazis, but this may be going through an awkward stage. |

| BH 95-98 (1/2012): This is aromatically similar to the "regular" cuvee of the Clos de Bèze but not identical as it's slightly spicier and notably more restrained, indeed even backward. The big-bodied, opulent and exceptionally rich flavors enjoy huge depth of material that renders the firm and ripe tannins almost invisible at present though I expect that they will become much more prominent in time. This stunningly long and perfumed effort will require at least 20 years of cellar time before it can fully resolve its structure. Until then, lots of patience will be necessary for this 'wow' wine to arrive at its full maturity. Drink 2030+. |

| BH 92-94 (1/2011): Mild wood influence sets off a highly complex nose comprised of fresh red currant and blue pinot fruit aromas that are liberally laced with warm earth and a sauvage hint that carries over to the relatively refined and supple yet entirely serious, powerful and concentrated flavors that deliver outstanding length. Despite the fact that the underlying tannins are finer than usual, this is not to say that it is an elegant wine though it is less youthfully austere than I typically find with this wine. VM 97+ (4/2012): Good bright dark red. Perfumed, profound aromas and flavors of red cherry, rose oil, minerals and crushed stone, with darker berries emerging with air. Like liquid velvet on the palate--lush dense and incredibly fine-grained. Most impressive today on the extraordinary expanding, palate-staining finish, which rises to a crescendo of spices and minerals. A wine of great thrust and chewiness, this is hard to scrape off the palate. An essence of Corton grand cru.
BH 93-96 (1/2011): This sports one of the ripest noses in the entire range with distinctly spicy notes adding interest to the admirably fresh plum and mocha suffused aromas that precede highly energetic, concentrated and big-bodied flavors that are extremely concentrated and the dry extract imparts a seductive texture to the mildly austere, balanced and hugely long finish. This is one of the most promising vintages of this wine that I have ever seen but note that this will definitely not be an early drinker as the supporting structure is more than simply firm. Drink 2029+.
WS 95 (2/2012): Enticing aromas of black cherry and black currant introduce this silky red. As the fruit unfolds, smoke, spice and mineral elements emerge, persisting through the long aftertaste. This is harmonious and suave, with the class and complexity worthy of its status as a grand cru. So fleshy, the tannins are buried now. Best from 2014 through 2030. 300 cases imported. |

The very long, slowly rising finish boasts Outstanding energy and thrust and saturates the mouth with sweet perfume.

There is excellent richness to the overtly powerful and muscular flavors that possess an imposing sense of scale that continues onto the textured and mouth coating finish. Like several of the wines in the range in 2013 this is a big but not really massive wine that retains a sense of proportion even though the underlying structure is quite firm. | BH 96 (5/2018): An extremely ripe nose manages to avoid any sense of surmaturite on the liqueur-like aromas of black cherry, cassis, anise and lilac scents. This is a massive wine, with huge mid-palate concentration, power and muscle that terminates in a borderline painfully intense finale that both coats the palate and lasts for minutes. I take considerable pains to point out however that this ultra-structured and overtly austere effort is not only built for the long haul but for the very long haul. I have suggested an initial drinking window of 30 years from now but it may very well be longer. In sum, this brilliant effort is very old school Corton that I wouldn't even consider opening for at least 10 years. Try from 2035+. |

WA 95 (1/2019): One of the more reserved wines in the range, the 2016 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with a youthfully reticent bouquet of dark wild berry fruit, licorice, coniferous forest floor, grilled meats and spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with an elegantly satiny attack and a deep, immensely concentrated mid-palate that's framed by ripe tannins and brisk acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish. This is an understated but profound Latricières which numbers among Faiveley's best in 2016.
BH 93-95 (1/2018): (from a very large 1.21 ha parcel.) Here too the wood treatment is subtle yet just prominent enough to warrant pointing out on the cool, pure and notably more sauvage nose of both red and dark wild berry and earth scents. There is a really lovely sense of underlying tension suffusing the much more mineral-driven middle weight flavors that are not quite as rich but notably more precise on the chiseled and wonderfully refined finish. Textbook. Drink 2031+. Don't miss!
VM 92-95 (1/2018): (from very old vines; no frost here): Healthy dark red with ruby tones. Aromas of dark berries and coffee with cream on top. At once densely packed and perfumed in the mouth, with crushed raspberry and cranberry flavors lifted by violet. Spreads out horizontally on the back end, finishing with terrific class and ineffable rising perfume of spices and flowers. The tannins here are linear and firm but not hard. VM 93-96 (2/2013): Bright, deep red. Very deep aromas and flavors of raspberry, redcurrant, smoke and crushed rock. At once penetrating and utterly fine-grained; explosive sappy perfume fills the mouth without leaving any impression of weight. Pinot just doesn't pull off this trick anywhere but in Burgundy's top sites. Finishes with noble tannins and Outstanding palate-staining length.
BH 92-95 (1/2013): (from both Mazis Haut and Bas where the vines total a remarkable 1.20 ha). A discreet hint of wood allows the slightly riper and definitely more sauvage aromas of earth, humus, dark berries and soft spice notes to shine. There is excellent power to the robust and broad-shouldered flavors that also brim with structure-buffering dry extract that coats the palate on the mineral-driven, punchy and seriously persistent finish. This is not quite as austere as the Latricières though note that here too plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2026+. Don't miss! |
