WA 94-95 (4/2007): Fourrier’s 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques reveals a gorgeous aroma of black fruits, rose, truffle, tea and musk, a marrowy, creamy richness of texture, and a riveting finishing complexity of fruit, meat, flowers, pungent spices and minerals. If this is not a case of progression into the territory of grand cru quality, I don’t know what is. I would plan to start following this from ten years out and anticipate at least a second decade of improvement. (With a vintage-typical, yet in this instance, somehow not disruptive contrast of milky texture with tart fresh fruit, and displaying strikingly overt minerality, the 2004 rendition of this wine is also well worth a decade of cellaring.)
VM 94+ (4/2008): Good deep red. Knockout nose combines raspberry, mocha, roast coffee, game and minerals, accented by mint and oak spice. The palate offers a lush wall of thick fruit that saturates the entire palate without leaving any impression of weight. This densely packed beauty finishes extremely long and smooth, with utterly suave tannins and superb aromatic lift.
BH 94 (2/2013): Initially this was heavily reduced and required a full 45 minutes in a vigorously shaken decanter to really dissipate the funk. Like many '05s at this stage in their evolution this remains reserved and tight but the concentration and balance is seriously impressive. That said, the reserved nose, while offering glimpses of what is to come, it closed and the supporting tannins are still very, very firm. I remain highly optimistic that in time this is going to be a genuinely great Clos St. Jacques but for now it's basically infanticide, even with extended aeration. I would advise just letting this slumber away for the better part of another decade as it's going to need it but when it finally matures, we're in for a real treat! Try from 2020+ |

VM 96 (12/2023): The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, which I never tasted from barrel, has a sublime bouquet that is the paragon of Pinot's transparency. Perfumed with joyous red fruit, crushed stone and a touch of wilted rose petal, the aromatics whisk you to the famed walled vineyard. The palate is beautifully balanced with slightly chalky tannins and a surfeit of energy and tension. It’s quite linear and strict toward the finish that just loses its initial crystalline quality. But still, this is a very great wine from Jean-Marie Fourrier. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin.
JM 98 (9/2023): Solid, rich dark crimson. Dark berry fruit, again evidently quite ripe yet showing a sense of balance. This style of bouquet I find enormously pleasing. Layers of flavour on the palate, a vibrant minerality, nuanced all the way through, no excessive alcohol, though the fruit is certainly ripe, and a velvet touch to the finish that is matched by a fresher feel. Brilliant wine! |

| JD 93 (8/2021): I loved the 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux, which has the more up-front, soft, charming style of the vintage front and center. Lots of pretty red fruits, flowers, spice, and subtle earthy nuances give way to a more medium-bodied Gevrey with polished tannins, solid mid-palate density and concentration, and a great finish. It's one of those wines that builds nicely over the evening and grows on you with time in the glass. It's drinking brilliantly today yet should have another decade of prime time. (Drink between 2021-2031). |

| VM 93 (1/2018): Full medium red. Captivating aromas of dark cherry, dried rose, lavender and crushed rock. Juicy and intensely flavored, offering excellent definition to its penetrating flavors of raspberry, cherry and saline minerality. Shows limited early sweetness but the wine's long, slowly mounting finish features dusty, well-buffered tannins and terrific saline energy. Part of this vineyard is on pure rock with very little topsoil and the strong mineral element thoroughly buffers the alcohol of the vintage. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 89-91 (1/2015): An expressive nose of relatively high-toned red currant, floral and warm earth scents precedes the equally refined and delineated middle weight flavors that culminate in a balanced, complex and beautifully persistent finish. This is notably finer than the old vines cuvée if not quite a long or concentrated. Still this is lovely and also worth your consideration as it should drink reasonably well young. (Drink starting 2020).
VM 87-89 (11/2014): Moderately saturated palish medium red. Sweet aromas of blueberry, cherry, rose petal, licorice and vanillin oak. Sweet and dense if a bit youthfully clenched, showing good body to its redcurrant and spice flavors. Finishes firmly tannic and persistent, with good lift. This was the first wine to finish its malolactic fermentation and is a bit ahead of the others in its development. (Drink between 2019-2026). Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 90-92 (1/2019): The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from 60-year old vines, 80-years in Champ Perrière (the minimum 40 years old). It has a clean, precise and very focused bouquet that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, plenty of tart red fruit laced with cedar and graphite, leading to a pointed finish that feels persistent and classic in style. Excellent. VM 89-91 (12/2021): The 2020 Gevrey-Chamerbtin Vieilles Vignes offers a mixture of red and black fruit laced with blood orange and quince, nicely focused with a sense of energy developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. Fine acidity, just slightly confit-like towards the finish that erodes a little of the precision compared to other cuvees, though there is satisgfying length. (Drink between 2025-2040). Neal Martin.
BH 88-90 (1/2022): Ripe and nicely layered aromas are comprised by notes of poached plum, warm earth and a whisper of the sauvage. The juicy and fleshy medium weight flavors possess both good volume and verve before terminating in a mildly rustic and warm finale. (Drink starting 2027). |

WA 90 (6/2010): The 2008 Vougeot Les Petits Vougeots - whose proximity geographically, geologically, and stylistically to Les Amoureuses or Hauts Doix, he says, should have argued for classifying it as a Chambolle - is deeper in color, richer in texture, and sweeter in fruit than the wines that preceded it in Fourrier’s line-up. Its ripe plum and raspberry fruit is still bright and sassy, though, and cherry pit and chalk lend a certain austere undertone.
VM 88-91 (4/2010): Bright, full red. Black raspberry aroma complicated by flinty minerality and lifted by floral perfume. Less precise than the Gruenchers-or is it simply more advanced in its malolactic fermentation? A rounder and more pliant wine, with a dominant flavor of black cherry and good volume. This has the mid-palate fullness to support its tannins. Finishes with good grip. A rather Chambolle style of wine-not surprising, as these vines are not far from Les Amoureuses.
BH 89-91 (1/2010): An extremely pretty and pure red pinot fruit nose leads to minerally, intense and precise middle weight flavors that culminate in a firm, complex and lingering finish. This is really quite refined and its proximity to Chambolle is in evidence. Drink 2014+. |
