| BH 90? (1/2013): Soft wood frames ripe and nuanced aromas of red and dark berry fruit, warm and pungent earth and a discreet hint of game. There is excellent mid-palate concentration and plenty of sap that imparts a velvety mouth feel to the muscular flavors that possess a distinct Gevrey style sauvage character that continues onto the long if mildly rustic finish where a touch of bitterness surfaces. The tannins seem sufficiently ripe so I suspect that the bitterness comes from the wood toast and thus it should dissipate in due time though I have put a question mark after the score for this reason. |

VM 92+ (4/2008): Good deep red. Sexy aromas of raspberry, smoke, minerals and roast coffee. Suave and juicy in the mouth, with lovely definition and cut to the concentrated flavors of tangy berries and game. Plenty of energy here. Finishes firmly tannic and long; more a wine of elegance than sheer power (Serafin describes is as "a little Charmes"). Still, this needs time in the bottle: I'd expect it to blossom in eight to ten years. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 92-93 (4/2007): Serafin’s 50-year-old vines rendered an Outstanding 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Fonteny displaying high-toned fresh and distilled purple plum and black cherry aromas mingled with almond extract and gamey meatiness, a clear, brightly-fruited yet incipiently creamy palate impression, and an impressively long, deeply fruited, marrowy, maple syrup-, caramel- and salt-tinged finish. There is a positively stony sense of minerality displayed as well.
BH 90-92 (1/2007): Subtle wood spice notes serve to highlight more elegant and airier black and blue berry fruit aromas that merge into rich, intense, delineated and pure flavors that are generous, indeed almost fleshy yet possess a beautiful sense of balance on the explosive finish that does a slow build from the mid-palate to the finale. Lovely. Drink 2013+. Outstanding! |

| BH 90 (1/2013): An adroit application of wood sets off the very fresh, cool and pure red currant, dark berry and earthy nose that merges seamlessly into the rich, round and relatively suave middle weight flavors that enjoy fine mid-palate concentration. There is excellent volume with really lovely delineation as well as a real sense of underlying tension on the lightly mineral-inflected, dusty, sappy and superbly long and mildly austere finish where there is also a touch of bitterness present though here it seems almost certain to dissipate with time. This is a refined Gevrey where the clean and dry finish is almost crisp. (Drink starting 2022). |
