VM 90 (3.2023): The 2008 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, poured from magnum, has matured admirably in bottle, losing the new oak that shrouded its birth, revealing more sprightly red fruit, more Pinoté. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied, pastille-like entry. Caramel hints permeate the red fruit; very smooth, but it feels just a little monotone toward the finish. Enjoyable, but it lacks a bit of intellectual heft. Tasted at the Clos Vougeot tasting at Château de la Tour. Neal Martin.
BH 94 (1/2011): An especially ripe nose features a spicy mix of earthy red berry fruit aromas that are trimmed in discreet oak. The earth-suffused, serious and strikingly textured full-bodied flavors possess plenty of sève and a youthfully austere, linear and impressively persistent finish. In sum, this is an outstanding Clos de Vougeot though one that will require ample patience. |

BH 93 (1/2011): (from a .55 ha parcel in the En Orveaux climat with vines planted in 1924 and 1979). As good as the Brûlees is the Echezeaux is notably more complex with its beautiful nose of cool, pure and airy purple fruit, primarily plum, and spice elements that includes anise and clove that can also be found on the mineral suffused, lacy and energetic flavors that possess excellent underlying material on the firmly structured, linear and persistent finish. A wine of harmony as the supporting tannins are dense but fine. Drink 2018+.
VM 90+ (4/2011): Medium red. Very closed nose hints at dried fruits, tobacco and spices; shows a bit less lift today than the Brulees. Then sweet but youthfully disjointed, with some slightly edgy acidity running through the wine. Fairly smooth in texture, but the finish is bracing and a bit peppery. This may need up to a decade to come into harmony. |
