VM 92 (3/2017): Full red. Aromas of dark cherry, smoky minerals and sexy soil tones. Very sweet and broad on entry, then suave and nicely delineated in the mid-palate, displaying complex saline soil tones and cherry and dark berry fruit flavors. This savory Volnay finishes with building toothcoating tannins and terrific chocolatey length. Needs time, but this wine strikes me as more harmonious than the excellent 2013 version was at the same stage.
WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a more pointed and angular nose at the moment when compared with the Taillepieds. It is probably the most primal of the Volnay, black cherry and cassis fruit suffused with tangible mineralite, but it needs to be knitted together during the remainder of its elevage. The palate is very well balanced, the wood component again needing time to enmesh, but there is good substance here -- even if I prefer the elegance of the Caillerets on the finish (at the moment).
BH 91-93 (4/2016): ( from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Once again there is a deft touch of wood apparent on the restrained, cool and pretty array of red berry, earth and softly spice-inflected nose. The wonderfully refined, layered and sleek middle weight flavors possess a polished mouth feel while delivering Outstanding length on the moderately austere and dusty finale. Like the Taillepieds this is quite firm and will need at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring before it will be approachable. Patience required. Drink 2026+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has a very composed bouquet with intense red cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry preserve aromas, offering that sensuality Burgundy-lovers seek from a Charmes-Chambertin. The palate is medium-bodied and showing the hand of the oak a little at the moment, but it is in proportion with the fruit and the finish maintains fine delineation.
VM 90-92 (1/2016): (from vines in the highest part of Mazoyères): Healthy dark red. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, anise and bitter chocolate show less floral character than the Combottes. Rich, fine-grained and deep, conveying a chocolatey ripeness but coming across as a bit earth-bound, with a slightly more rustic texture than the Combottes. This plush wine finishes with big, ripe, chewy tannins.
BH 92-95 (1/2016): (from a 1.13 ha parcel in Mazoyères that abuts the Route des Grands Crus.) A more deeply pitched and notably earthier nose also displays plenty of sauvage character. This gamy element continues onto the concentrated medium weight plus flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel despite the evident muscularity of the austere and explosive finish. This is very Mazoyères in character yet it is a bit less rustic than usual. Worth a look provided that you have the patience to cellar it. Drink 2029+. |

BH 93 (4/2016): (from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis.) A ripe but restrained nose features notes of both red and dark berry fruit, earth, humus, smoke and exotic tea scents along with a background hint of oak toast. There is impressive volume to the well-muscled and broad-shouldered flavors that possess plenty of underlying tension, all wrapped in a complex, rustic and lingering finish that is less austere than usual. This beauty will require at least a decade to be at its best. Drink 2024+.
VM 90-93 (1/2016): (aged in 75% new oak, but Boillot used 350-liter barrels to get more freshness): Healthy dark red. Reticent aromas of black cherry, chocolate, menthol and herbs are less fruity today than the Volnays here. Large-scaled, round and sweet, showing more complex, soil-driven salinity than easy fruit in the early going. Powerful material here. Finishes saline, ripely tannic and long. This wine may need a solid eight years in the cellar to approach maturity. |

BH 91 (4/2016): A deft touch of wood sets off the ripe, pure and elegant aromas of spice and floral-inflected dark pinot fruit and plum scents. There is excellent delineation and energy to the tension-filled, rich and complex medium-bodied flavors that possess a lush, even opulent mouth feel yet the finish is borderline robust. In sum this is a Santenots of contrasts but I like the interplay of different elements. Drink 2021+.
VM 89-92 (1/2016): Bright, dark red. Subtly complex dark red fruits, flowers and chocolate on the nose. Plush and silky on the palate, possessing good buffering material to support the fairly strong tannins. This seamless, vinous wine shows no easy sweetness but boasts excellent sappy vinosity. Incidentally, the Boillots recently sold their vines in Savigny-lès-Beaune and Beaune in order to buy some Puligny-Montrachet. |

There is a subtle trace of minerality present on the detailed and almost delicate middle weight flavors that terminate in a dusty and mildly austere finish that exhibits just a trace of edginess. Even though the balance is not ideal I like the obvious Volnay character. (Drink starting 2019). |

As one would reasonably expect this is much more elegant with its highly perfumed and ultra-pure essence of red currant and wide ranging floral elements that are trimmed in sandalwood and anise nuances. The stony and saline middle weight flavors possess laser-like delineation along with good richness and volume, all wrapped in a firm and ever-so-mildly austere finale that also makes it clear that this is built-to-age, indeed it will very like require 10 to 12 years of bottle age to reach its apogee. | JD 93 (8/2021): I loved the 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux, which has the more up-front, soft, charming style of the vintage front and center. Lots of pretty red fruits, flowers, spice, and subtle earthy nuances give way to a more medium-bodied Gevrey with polished tannins, solid mid-palate density and concentration, and a great finish. It's one of those wines that builds nicely over the evening and grows on you with time in the glass. It's drinking brilliantly today yet should have another decade of prime time. (Drink between 2021-2031). |

JM 93 (9/2017): Medium deep red purple, oak and a touch of oxidation has slightly affected the nose, causing some stewed fruit. It also makes the wine a bit clumsy in the mouth, and there is a lot of oak, but there is also a sign of very high class fruit typical of the vineyard. So this sample is not working today but I suspect a really fine wine underneath.
BH 91 (4/2017): An airy and markedly floral nose also reveals spicy notes of both red and dark currant, spice and plenty of earth character. There is good richness to the vibrant and overtly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that retain fine delineation on the elegant, dusty and well-balanced finish. At present this seems to lack the mid-palate stuffing I'm used to seeing from the best vintages though I suspect that this will very likely fill out with time in bottle. In sum, 2014 appears to be a very good but not genuinely great vintage for this consistently excellent wine. Drink 2024+. |

VM 93 (3/2017): (13% alcohol; less than 20 hectoliters per hectare produced): Good bright red. Pretty aromas of dark cherry, menthol and dark chocolate. Rich, broad, ripe and dry; more mouthfilling than the foregoing samples but still with a light touch. (The pH here is 3.4, but Lafon noted that the '15s have lower pHs and higher acidity.) Lovely depth to the fruit, spice and soil tones. Finishes very long, with refined tannins, superb energy and excellent balance. This will probably be accessible relatively early, like the Monthelie. BH 92 (4/2017): (from 40+ year old vines planted in shallow, high clay content soil sitting on a bed of solid rock.) An elegant, cool and beautifully complex nose displays a discreetly spicy array of red berries plum, violets, tea and a wisp of warm earth. There is really lovely delineation to the concentrated and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that exhibit a taut muscularity while remaining refined and well-balanced on the firm but not austere finale. This is often a very impressive wine chez Lafon but in 2014 it is a bit more elegant than usual. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

WA 93-95 (12/2015): The 2014 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is matured in 50% new oak and is 100% whole bunch fruit. It is blessed with a winsome bouquet. As usual, there is something very natural, unimposing and refined on the nose: blackberry and briary, a hint of graphite, a subtle leafiness maybe, and yet delineated and very pure. The palate is lively and energetic with crisp tannin, black rather than red fruit, linear and very classic in style with what you might call a "cool" marine-influenced finish that has fine salinity. What a great Clos des Lambrays that will put a smile on the face of those that adore refined Burgundy.
VM 92-94 (1/2016): (Taupenot makes less than a barrel of wine annually from a tiny parcel planted in 1975 at the bottom of the Clos des Lambrays): Slightly hazy medium red. A deep earthy perfume complements aromas of raspberry, spices and dried flowers. A bit imploded but surprisingly fresh and vibrant on the palate, with flavors of raspberry and flowers tweaked by a pungent blood orange note. The very long, slowly mounting finish features slightly tight tannins, a subtle saline quality and considerable finesse."This is never a powerful style, but more about length and charm," noted Taupenot. Still, this beauty will need at least seven or eight years of bottle aging.
BH 91-94 (1/2016): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age; made with 100% whole clusters.) A notably spicy, fresh, cool and floral nose displays mostly red berry fruit scents that are trimmed in discreet wood notes. There is excellent cut and definition to the nicely rich and attractively textured flavors that culminate in a presently austere finale though I doubt that austerity will persist. This is a relatively fine and forward vintage for Clos des Lambrays and one that should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of bottle age. Drink 2026+. |

| BH 91-93 (1/2016): A brooding and backward nose once again only grudgingly gives up notes of essence of black cherry, spice, earth and gamy aromas. There is superb richness and almost painful intensity to the overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a very firmly structured and impressively long finish. This is much less rustic than it usually is and should easily see its 20th birthday if you enjoy older burgundies as Chaffots almost always ages wonderfully well. Drink 2026+. |

BH 92-94 (1/2016): This is really quite aromatically attractive with its cool and pure nose of very fresh red berries, earth, game, spice and soft floral hints. There is once again excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the broad-shouldered flavors that culminate in a moderately austere and very firmly structured finish that exhibits terrific length. This is very Corton in basic character and is going to require a long snooze in a cool cellar. (Drink starting 2029).
VM 91-91 (1/2016): Full, bright ruby-red. Liqueur-like kirsch and cassis aromas are complicated by mint, licorice and peppery wild herbs. The pepper and herbs carry through on the slightly wild but youthfully imploded palate, where a deep blackberry flavor is further lifted by a minty quality. Marchand believes this wine is a bit riper than the 2013 version; it certainly has potentially explosive fruit. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 90-92 (1/2016): Once again there is a discreet but not invisible application of wood setting off the very Vosne-like nose of Asian-style tea, sandalwood, violet, dark berry and a lovely mix of spice elements. The spiciness continues onto the supple and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a delicious and lingering finish. This isn't as concentrated as the Boudots and it's not quite as structured either but it is certainly pretty and should drink well sooner. |

This is a classic Mitans of delicacy and harmony. |

BH 92 (1/2017): This is the first wine to display any appreciable wood with its cooler and even spicier combination of red current, cassis and pretty violet scents. The utterly delicious and more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors possess lovely underlying tension before culminating in a refined finale that displays a discreet touch of youthful austerity. This is also very good stuff and worth considering. (Drink starting 2022).
VM 92 (6/2024): The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has a very attractive bouquet that has a little more fruit and vigor than its peers. Blackberries, morels and leather touches come through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, but there is a little more flesh compared to others. Hickory-tinged red fruit with a dash of Chinese 5-spice appear towards the finish. Drinking perfectly now, but I sense that it would improve with decanting. (Drink between 2023-2033). Neal Martin.
WA 91 (10/2017): Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Chaignots has a vivacious, open and generous bouquet lavished with black cherries, cassis and wild strawberry fruit that is succinctly interwoven into the new oak. The palate is medium-bodied and quite sumptuous on the entry, more primal than its peers with plenty of black cherry and strawberry fruit, a fine thread of acidity and a very pure finish. It still has a long way to go, but this gutsy Nuits-Saint-Georges from Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée at Mugneret-Gibourg has potential. Tasted September 2017. |

The refined, intense and precise medium-bodied flavors exhibit even more minerality on the delicious and inviting finish that is shaped by remarkably fine-grained tannins. Textbook Fuées. BH 88-91 (4/2016): Here too the nose is exceptionally fresh if somewhat somber with its layered array of ripe black cherry, plum, violet and earth aromas. There is fine richness to the notably round middle weight flavors that are blessed with good volume and a succulent texture where the moderately firm but well-balanced finish is again mildly rustic and austere. (Drink starting 2021).
WA 88-90 (12/2015): The 2014 Pommard Village la Croix Blanche is usually blended with Pommard Noizons...at least when it is not being destroyed 100% by hail. It has a punchy blackcurrant and iodine-tinged bouquet that is quite Volnay-like. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy texture, a little disjointed at the moment but it will coalesce with time. There is good salinity on the finish here and the 35% new oak is nicely integrated. This should grow up to be a thoroughly decent Pommard. |

| BH 94 (4/2016): In contrast to the nose of the Bressandes this is more obviously wooded and while it's not enough to dominate the more overtly sauvage-inflected dark berry fruit, earth and spice aromas, it's not subtle. There is outstanding density and even more muscle present on the even bigger and richer flavors that also possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the copious amount of dry extract present on the sappy, complex and very serious finale. This is a big wine with firm tannins to accompany it yet the extract is such that it should be more than capable of not only absorbing the wood treatment but buffering the tannic spine as well. Note well though that this is not a wine to drink in its youth. (Drink starting 2029). |

| BH 97 (1/2017): There is enough wood to notice framing the exuberantly spicy red and dark currant aromas that display an abundance of sauvage and earth nuances. The cool and pure medium weight plus flavors are remarkably refined for a young Chambertin yet there is clearly plenty of power lurking beneath the refined veneer. This is a big but not massive vintage for the Rousseau Cham and I like the sense of proportion and particularly so on the harmonious, superbly long and seamlessly well-balanced finale. VM 92 (3/2017): Light-medium red. Wonderfully scented nose combines strawberry, cherry, dried rose and earth. Very pure, silky wine with subtle sweetness and a seamless texture to its sappy fruit, spice and saline mineral flavors. Boasts a terrific combination of thickness and energy. Most impressive today on the unflagging, classically dry finish, which leaves behind a cherry perfume. Really positive use of whole clusters here. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 90-92 (1/2016): (from a blend of 3 1ers that include Corbeaux, En Ergot and Combottes.) Here too there is a discreet application of wood framing the overtly floral aromas that include both lavender and rose along with notes of earth and freshly crushed red berries. The beautifully sleek and intense middle weight flavors exhibit an appealing hint of minerality on the refined, balanced and dusty finish. Lovely and understated. Drink 2024+. |
