| BH 93 (4/2017): This particular bottle behaved almost counterintuitively as initially the nose was markedly floral with its cool and restrained aromas of mostly red berry fruit and underbrush nuances that displayed just a hint of secondary development. I say that it behaved somewhat counterintuitively because with air it became progressively reduced, something that is quite rare in my experience. Otherwise there is both excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the seductively textured but muscular flavors that brim with sappy dry extract, all wrapped in a distinctly youthful, firm and lingering though distinctly robust and austere finish. This is not one of the more elegant vintages for this wine and despite the whiff of secondary character found on the nose, it's still a long way from its peak. In a word, patience. Drink 2016+. |

| BH 95 (1/2003): Strikingly distinctive nose of game, rich black, earthy fruits and roasted coffee notes as well as something slightly animale plus lusty, full-bodied, intense, velvety flavors that display incredible presence. This is alive and vibrant and just screams breed and class. Much like the Combottes in that it is so intense as to seemingly result in permanent sensory overload. | BH 94 (4/2009): A more discreet and naturally cooler nose of extract of red pinot and blue berry fruit that is also spicy and elegant but here the coolness of the vineyard comes into play in the form of a certain reserve, particularly on the delicious and mineral suffused medium plus weight flavors that possess superb focus and really lovely detail on the layered, wonderfully complex and tautly muscular finish that goes on and on. | BH 88 (4/2014): A highly aromatic and beautifully complex nose features discreet but not invisible oak influence along with lovely floral hints to the fresh, ripe and mature dark berry fruit and earth suffused aromas. There is good richness and detail to the lightly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess a fine sense of energy but not the depth or sophistication displayed on the nose, all wrapped in a solidly long finish. This is one of those wines that has a truly distinguished nose but an average plus amount of depth and length so some may like this more than I do. To be sure, this is a very pretty wine but it's not special in the context of what Leroy typically does with it. In terms of drinkability for my taste this has reached its peak though it should be capable of holding at this plateau for another decade. Drink now+. |

BH 91 (1/2003): Bigger and certainly earthier than the Fremières and fine as it is, this simply cannot match the elegance, precision and knock out depth of the former wine. That said, the Narbantons is a very fine wine in its own right with smoked meat and ripe though not roasted earth aromas and rich, intense, sappy and almost robust flavors and exceptionally good length. Terrific quality. Drink 2009-2016. Outstanding!
VM 90 (3/2003): Good deep red. Ripe aromas of black raspberry, smoky oak and earth. Sweet, dense and vinous, with currant and licorice flavors and a solid mineral underpinning. Chewy and rich. VM 94+ (9/2013): The 2011 Corton-Charlemagne impresses for its energy and crystalline purity.
BH 92 (4/2013): There is enough reduction present to notice but not so much that it completely hides the spicy character of what appears to be very ripe black pinot fruit. There is a highly seductive mouth feel and texture to the extract-rich middle weight flavors that possess amazing depth for a villages level wine, all wrapped in a highly persistent finish that really fans out like a peacock's tail. An exquisite effort. Drink 2021+.
WA 89 (8/2013): The 2011 Vosne-Romanee Les Genaivrieres, which lies in close proximity to Lalou’s maison in Vosne, shows a touch of reduction on the nose with primal red rather than black fruit. It comes across as a little conservative after the wonderful Nuits 2011s. The palate is silky smooth on the entry, very refined with supple, lithe tannins. There are plenty of pure dark cherry and raspberry preserve notes to enjoy with a sedate, comfy finish that has a lovely caressing texture. |
