| VM 92+ (3/2015): Medium red. Sexy, inviting aromas of redcurrant, minerals, smoke and rose petal. Juicy and fine-grained but youthfully imploded, with very good acidity giving this large-scaled wine excellent delineation. Finishes very long and sweet, with a boatload of powerful but ripe tannins. Offers superb potential but will require considerable patience. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 92-94 (1/2014): (from vines next to the wall by Grands Echezeaux; 40% whole cluster) Relatively heavy reduction renders the nose unreadable. There is excellent richness, size, weight and power to the medium weight plus flavors that brim with mouth coating dry extract that buffers well the firm tannic spine on the strikingly long finish. This is austere but not really rustic and should amply reward mid to long-term cellaring. Drink 2027+. VM 91-93 (1/2014): (50% vendange entier): Bright medium red. Candied red cherry and redcurrant aromas are accented by pepper and fresh herbs. Juicy, spicy and bright, showing lovely cut and energy to the red fruit and mineral flavors. The youthfully firm tannins are a bit tough today but the finish displays attractive floral lift. |

WA 88-90 (6/2015): The 2012 Bourgogne comes from two parcels in “Les Pressonnier” and “Les Grand Champs” and sees no new oak. It has a captivating bouquet of brambly black fruit that is very well defined. The palate is well balanced with sappy black fruit on the entry, nicely judged acidity and a natural, pastille-like finish. This is uncomplicated but astutely crafted, downright delicious Burgundy. VM 88-90 (1/2014): A great introduction to the vintage here, Bachelet's 2012 Bourgogne is endowed with superb depth and purity in its class. Red stone fruits, plums, spices, menthol and licorice inform this striking, expressive beauty. There is a surprising amount of structure for a Bourgogne. (Drink between 2014-2020). Antonio Galloni. BH 87-89 (1/2014): There is a gentle touch of wood to the spicy red and dark berry fruit aromas that convey a real sense of earth that carries over to the impressively rich and utterly delicious flavors that despite the obvious ripeness retain a fine sense of energy and freshness on the lingering finish. This is a really good Bourgogne and absolutely worth a look. (Drink starting 2016). |

| BH 89-91 (1/2014): (from vines averaging between 60 and 70 years of age.) There is enough wood to be easily perceptible though not so much as to impede an appreciation of the spicy dark berry fruit, earth and underbrush suffused nose. The seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the abundance of palate coating dry extract that also does a fine job of buffering the moderately firm tannic spine on the ever-so-slightly rustic finish. A fine Gevrey villages. Drink 2018+. Outstanding Top Value! |

| BH 91 (1/2015): ( a 1 ha blend of Groseilles, Baudes, Noirots and Gruenchers, which interestingly are all bunched together, geographically speaking.) A similar if more elegant and more complex nose leads to cool, delicious and well-delineated middle weight flavors that possess excellent verve on the lightly mineral-inflected, balanced and dusty finish. This is very Chambolle in basic character yet more powerful than it usually is. This too is recommended. Drink 2018+. Outstanding! |

| BH 92 (1/2015): (from a .66 ha parcel.) This is ever so slightly more aromatically refined with its nose of plum, violets and red and dark currant liqueur scents. There is a very round, lush and seductive quality to the mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors that possess a silky palate impression on the well-balanced finish that delivers very fine depth and length. In sum, this tender yet entirely serious effort is really very pretty. Worth considering. Drink 2020+. Outstanding! |

| BH 89 (4/2014): (from the 1er Le Clos Blanc.) An expressive nose blends notes of both red and dark berry fruit, earth, underbrush and game hints. There is good detail and verve to the middle weight flavors that possess the same saline component as the Caillerets before culminating in a delicious and intense finish. While this is not a true villages given the declassified 1er fruit, it definitely offers better than average quality for its declared level. Drink 2018+. Outstanding Top Value! |

VM 90 (3/2015): Bright, dark red. Sweet red berries, nutty oak and subtle soil tones on the nose. Fat, sweet and spicy, showing good fullness for village wine. Savory, serious Volnay with good vinosity and density and a saline complexity. Finishes with broad, building, ripe tannins and good savory persistence. Antonio Galloni. BH 88 (4/2014): (Entirely from 5 different 1ers). An earthy and distinctly ripe nose of cassis, plum and soft floral aromas gives way to equally earthy middle weight flavors where once again the supporting tannins are relatively fine-grained. The finale is firm without being rustic though there is enough youthful austerity to notice. This should reward mid-term cellaring. Drink 2018+. |

| BH 90 (4/2014): This is perhaps the ripest wine in the range with its nose of spiced plum, mocha, dark cherry liqueur and soft wood scents. There is excellent richness and mid-palate concentration to the lightly mineral-inflected flavors that possess fine persistence on the mildly austere and saline-infused finish that also displays enough asperity to notice. My score offers the benefit of the doubt that this will harmonize as it's a bit awkward today. Drink 2022+. |

| VM 93-95 (1/2014): Violets, licorice, blueberries and graphite are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2012 Volnay Les Santenots. There is more than enough structure to support the fruit in a dramatic, large-scaled Burgundy that captures the essence of the year in its explosive personality. This intense, powerful Volnay need serious time in the cellar. A generous, beautifully resonant finish rounds things off. Antonio Galloni. |

BH 89-91 (1/2014): This is also sufficiently reduced as to negate an evaluation of the fruit. By contrast there is clearly more volume and concentration to the medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine minerality on the balanced, palate coating and lingering finish that offers markedly better depth. (Drink starting 2018). VM 89-91 (1/2014): Dark red cherries, plums, spices and wild flowers are woven together in the 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Favorites Vieilles Vignes. This is an especially tense, energetic Mes Favorites built on perfume and freshness rather than the more intense style of years past. There is a lot to like here. (Drink between 2016-2027). Antonio Galloni. WA 85-87 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Favorites Vieilles Vignes comes from the oldest vines around 70 years in age. It has a clean fresh bouquet with strawberry and raspberry scents laced with floral notes that should fill out by the time of bottling. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherry and strawberry fruit on the entry. It is more harmonious than the nose on Burguet’s other cuvees, while the finish offers good structure if not quite the fireworks I was expecting. |

| BH 93-96 (1/2014): A strikingly spicy nose offers up notes composed of essence of red pinot fruit, black currant, violets and sandalwood. In much the same fashion as the En Orveaux this possesses an ultra-refined mouth feel as the shaping tannins are quite fine-grained that could not be more different compared to that of the Malconsorts yet this is perhaps even longer. Even at such a young state of development this is a remarkably harmonious wine of understated grace. Wow. Drink 2024+. |

| WA 90 (6/2015): The 2012 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Bousselots has a mature bouquet, plenty of sous-bois notes: black truffle and Ceps and a sprig of mint. BH 92 (4/2015): This is quite ripe though it stops short of being surmature with its nose of plum liqueur, mocha, black cherry and earth aromas. There is exceptionally good richness to the very suave and succulent medium weight flavors that are supported by phenolically mature tannins on the mouth coating finish. This is a big and overtly powerful wine yet it's not especially rustic or austere. Drink 2024+. Outstanding! VM 90 (3/2015): (these 2012s were bottled in September of 2014): Good dark red. Wild, very ripe aromas of raspberry, dried flowers and wild herbs. Dark berry flavors display a juicy character along with a note of chocolatey ripeness. An outperformer for this cru, finishing with substantial but tasty tannins and lovely persistence. I underestimated this wine last year. WA 87-89 (12/2013): The 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Croix Noires has a feminine, quite elegant bouquet with scents of raspberry preserve, redcurrant jus and light mushroom scents. The palate is sweet and composed on the entry. There is a noticeable saline element to this Pommard that shows rigidity and structure towards the slightly clipped finish. |

| VM 92 (2/2019): Medium yellow. Very sexy scents of ripe stone fruits, minerals, clove and menthol, plus a suggestion of redcurrant and a Batard-like toasty nuance. Large-scaled, plush and powerful but also quite fine-grained, with salty minerality and a repeating menthol element carrying through to a palate-staining finish. There's lovely supporting acidity here for such a rich, ripe wine. A touch of sweetness gives this complex, chewy premier cru some early appeal but there's much more to come here. (I should note that my first bottle showed a deeper yellow color. It was sweet and silky but displayed more evolved notes of ripe apricot, marzipan and white chocolate, as well as a balsamic element, almost certainly due to a bad cork or cork seal. Veronique Drouhin admitted that her family had some cork problems in 2012.) Stephen Tanzer. |

There is good freshness and energy to the supple and well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the balanced finish where a trace of austerity is present. (Drink between 2020-2030). Stephen Tanzer. WA 91 (11/2019): The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is a little shy after its recent bottling, opening in the glass with aromas of wild berries and orange rind that are framed by a generous application of new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and elegant, with lively acids, fine and powdery tannins and a precise finish. This is never going to challenge the lovely 2016 rendition, but by contrast, it will show all its cards with minimal bottle age. |

BH 93-95 (1/2014): The quality of this wine has skyrocketed over the past few vintages; while it was always very good, it has now become one of the most consistent performers in the Faiveley portfolio. There is quite a bit of wood influence at present and it fights a bit with the spicy dark berry fruit aromas that exhibit plenty of earth and game character. The impressively scaled and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors possess an opulent yet entirely serious mouth feel before culminating in a balanced, explosively and tremendously persistent finish. This is a bit woody today yet the underlying material is such that it seems all but evident that it will successfully integrate the oak in time. Drink 2032+. Don't miss! VM 93-96 (1/2014): Bright, deep red. Deep aromas of black cherry, crushed rock and graphite. Dense, sappy and energetic, offering Outstanding depth to its soil-driven black cherry and saline flavors. Delivers an uncanny combination of chewy texture and verve. Finishes with palate-staining length and lift, as tactile as a solid. A great vin de terroir for the cellar. |

WA 91 (6/2014): The 2012 Beaune 1er Cru Les Greves has a lifted, floral bouquet with cheeky scents of iodine and cassis, all with fine definition. Drink 2015-2022. BH 87-90 (4/2014): The expressive nose features notes of very fresh and airy red and dark currant with plenty of earth influence along with spice wisps. There is a very round and generous mouth feel to the almost lacy middle weight flavors that exude a very fine minerality on the slightly toasty finish that exhibits just enough sweetness to notice as well as good if not special depth and length. This is a refined Grèves that should also be accessible young if desired. Drink 2017+. |

| BH 89-91 (4/2014): Here too the nose is relatively high-toned with appealing spice elements adding breadth to the expressive nose of red currant and sandalwood nuances. The supple and very rich medium-bodied flavors are blessed with plenty of palate coating dry extract that imparts a velvety mouth feel to the balanced and impressively persistent finish. This is an excellent villages and well worth considering. (Drink starting 2018). |

VM 91-94 (2/2014): Good bright, deep red. Sexy, vibrant aromas of raspberry, crushed stone, red licorice and smoky minerality. Densely packed and sweet, with noteworthy blackberry and menthol intensity enlivened by smoky minerality and flowers. Very youthful wine with spice and licorice flavors extending the finish. A superb showing. BH 90-92 (1/2014): (A 2 ha parcel with a mix of 80% 75+ year old vines and the remainder of 15 to 20 year old vines). A brooding and pungently earthy nose mixes dark berry aromas with humus, underbrush and sauvage notes. There is very fine richness to the suave and quite round medium-bodied flavors that retain a lovely sense of vibrancy on the lingering finish. This is finer than the Porrets but less powerful. A qualitative choice. Drink 2022+. WA 90-92 (12/2013): The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers comes from 1.8-hectare parcel populated by young and old, 15- and 70-year-old vines. It has a broody, stony, undergrowth-tinged bouquet that unfolds with aeration whereupon it reveals evocative estuarine scents. The palate has a wonderful sense of symmetry and focus, if not quite the length of Gouge’s fellow 2012s. Therefore this may constitute early drinking albeit at a satisfyingly high level. |

WA 93-95 (12/2013): The 2012 Richebourg Grand Cru comes from the family’s 0.60-hectare parcel whose oldest vines are approaching retirement. It has a very refined, elegant bouquet that is actually more like a Romanee-Saint-Vivant at the moment. There are lovely scents of orange-blossom and quince emerging with time. The palate is well-balanced with a rounded, harmonious entry. It is silky smooth at the moment with a fine thread of acidity. It remains sedate, distant even but very sophisticated and the oak is very well assimilated towards the finish. Excellent. BH 91-94 (4/2014): (The Richebourg parcel now totals .6 ha after it was combined with the vines that formerly belonged to Michel Gros, which he agreed to exchange so that he could keep the Vosne 1er Clos de Reas as a monopole of Domaine Michel Gros. The Richebourg vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) In much the same fashion as the Pezerolles this is presently very toasty and it's enough where the wood pushes the spicy black pinot fruit to the background if not completely hides it. The supple and very round large-scaled flavors possess excellent concentration and an intense minerality on the powerful and moderately austere finish. My predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt in this case because the wood does not alter the texture or sweeten the finish and thus there is a good chance that this will ultimately harmonize. Drink 2024+. |

BH 91-93 (1/2014): This is also boisterously spicy with a full complement of Asian-style spice nuances that add plenty of breadth to the essence of black currant scents. There is exceptionally good richness to the full-bodied and very lush medium weight flavors that completely coat the palate with dry extract on the balanced and intense finish that is shaped by admirably fine-grained tannins. This opulent effort is lovely and should also be approachable young if desired. (Drink starting 2020). WA 91-93 (12/2013): The 2012 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Clos des Reas, Michel Gros’s famous monopole to the south of Vosne-Romanee village, has a complex, mineral driven bouquet with black rather than red fruit, touches of gingerbread and marmalade loitering with intent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, fine tannins and good purity of fruit. It is harmonious and focused with a gentle build to what feels like a structured, saline finish reminiscent of the sea. This is a very fine Clos des Reas: one of the finest and perhaps overlooked premier crus of the appellation. |

BH 92 (1/2015): Here the exuberant and wonderfully pure nose speaks of floral and both dark and red berry fruit aromas that display spicy top notes. There is good vibrancy and detail to the lilting and lacy middle weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the balanced and saline-inflected finish. I very much like the seductive mouth feel as well as the fine complexity on the impressively persistent finish. Lovely juice. (Drink starting 2022). VM 91 (3/2015): Moderately saturated medium red. Ripe strawberry and raspberry aromas are complicated by underbrush and dried flowers. Sweet, supple and fine-grained, with the red fruit flavors nicely framed by bright, harmonious acidity and complicated by savory minerality. Finishes with subtle salinity and lovely balance. | VM 94 (6/2024): The 2012 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaumonts 1er Cru is showing wonderfully now. There's much more fruit than expected with red plum and raspberry coulis, just a hint of sous-bois and excellent delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins and a keen line of acidity. The 2012 is harmonious with a gentle grip towards the lightly spiced finish that lingers in the mouth. Superb. VM 91 (11/2014): Bright medium red. Ripe, alluring aromas and flavors of wild strawberry, raspberry and earth. Sweet, fine-grained and enveloping, showing lovely energy and density and still holding its fruit in reserve. Finishes fresh and firm-edged, with full, fine-grained tannins and excellent length. (Drink between 2021-2031). Stephen Tanzer. BH 90? (1/2015): A spicy and notably ripe nose features aromas of dark pinot fruit, red currant, blood orange and an abundance of spice elements that include anise and sandalwood. There is an elegant mouth feel to the luscious and generously proportioned middle weight flavors that possess a velvety texture, all wrapped in a beautifully complex finish. If there is a concern though it's that this very firmly structured effort feels as though it may turn secondary relatively early in its evolution. As such I underscore my concern with a question mark because it will certainly require more than 8 years of bottle age to resolve the tannins yet the fruit may no longer be there. BH 91-94 (4/2014): A slightly riper and more obviously animale infused nose features notes of red berries, wood, earth and plenty of humus character. There is outstanding mid-palate density to the less obviously mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess good focus and power on the impressively persistent and beautifully complex finale. This possesses a lovely sense of harmony and punch as well as very ripe supporting tannins. (Drink starting 2024). VM 91-94 (1/2014): Good bright, deep red. Red cherry, stony minerals, rose petal and a suggestion of chocolate mint on the nose; reminded me of a slightly earthier version of a Clos Saint-Jacques. Densely packed, saline and intense, with terrific energy and a restrained sweetness to the flavors of red fruits and minerals. A lovely precise, perfumed midweight with a slowly mounting finish offering a strong impression of soil character. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 93-95 (1/2014): The 2012 Volnay Clos du Chateau des Ducs impresses for its pure texture. Silky, generous and enveloping, the 2012 flows with the essence of black cherries, plums, savory herbs and wild flowers, all finely-knit and impeccably balanced. This is one of the more polished wines in the range. Today, it is absolutely singing. Antonio Galloni. WA 90-92 (12/2013): The 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Chateau des Ducs is the 0.57-hectare monopole of Lafarge from an average of 80-year-old vines. Despite coaxing it remains stubbornly reticent on the nose, coquettishly revealing sea cave scents, perhaps a suggestion of what is to come with bottle age. The palate is more expressive with silky tannins, very pure red berry fruit, fine mineralite and a sophisticated, focused finish that lingers in the mouth. This has a wonderful weightless quality to it. Very classy. BH 88-91 (4/2014): (from 50+ year old vines; a monopole of the domaine.) This was quite firmly reduced but even so the underlying fruit does seem ripe. In the same fashion as the Mitans there is that beguiling sense of underlying tension to the beautifully well-delineated medium-bodied flavors that possess a refined mouth feel, all wrapped in a finish that is once again notably dry. Note that my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2019+. |

WA 93+ (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 La Grande Rue Grand Cru from Lamarche has a fabulous bouquet that gently unfurls in the glass: fine mineralite and tension, wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tensile tannin, crisp and poised, tightly wound and certainly needing several years to really show its mettle, but a great wine that is both understated yet intense. I'll be cautious now, but I would not be surprised to see this gain more favourable reviews in the future. BH 93 (1/2015): There is just enough wood to notice framing the red currant, black cherry and plum aromas that also display pretty floral and spice notes. There is fine concentration, power and punch to the refined and classy middle weight flavors that possess excellent intensity on the balanced, mouth coating, velvety and beautifully persistent finish. This too will need at least a decade plus of bottle age. Drink 2027+. |

Interestingly this is the spiciest wine in the range outside of the La Romanee that combines with a really lovely panoply of red and blue fruit and floral scents. There is excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the fleshy and generous medium-bodied flavors that possess controlled power on the beautifully complex, balanced and long finish that is a bit less austere than that of the Reignots. This is also excellent and should drink well both young and fully mature. Drink 2027+. |

WA 92 (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grand Vignes from Domaine Comte de Liger-Belair from has a crisp raspberry and blackcurrant-scented nose with nicely integrated oak and appreciable intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft, tart cherry opening. The acidity is nicely judged although it needs more complexity to come through in what feels like a straight-laced finish, which in fact it does with ten minutes in the glass. This improves with aeration, achieving more and more cohesion and precision, whilst there is a lovely edginess on the finish. VM 91 (4/2015): The 2012 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Grandes Vignes comes across as powerful, but also a bit wild. Cool streaks of minerality give the 2012 its sense of energy and invigorating freshness, but the 2013 remains a bit rough around the edges and rustic, qualities that are much less apparent in the 2013, which is the result of an additional year working with the site rather than a reflection of the vintage. Still, this is a solid effort across the board. Drink 2017-2032. Antonio Galloni. BH 91 (1/2015): (a monopole of the domaine.) A very pretty and airy nose of various red and dark berries that include cherry and currants also exhibits floral and earth hints. There is a subtle earthiness to the punchy and well-delineated middle weight flavors that offer fine length with good if not genuinely special complexity on the saline-inflected finish. BH 91-93 (1/2014): Here the wood is more discreet if not invisible as it sets off the earthy and quite somber mix of red and dark currant, spice and distinctly sauvage nuances. There is good energy and precision to the focused, intense and overtly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a saline, moderately austere and impressively persistent finish. (Drink starting 2024). VM 91-93 (1/2014): Medium red. Sexy, soil-driven aromas of red berries, flowers, earth and mint. Sweet, fine-grained and delicate, with a touch of herbs to the raspberry flavor. Not at all a fleshy style but prettier than usual for this wine, which tends to be severe in the early going. The serious, ripe tannins should support slow development in bottle. "We're lucky always to have healthy levels of acidity in our Gevrey wines," noted Arnaud Mortet. A splendid village bottling. (Drink between 2019-2026). Stephen Tanzer. BH 90 (1/2015): The expressive nose is compositionally similar to the straight Gevrey villages cuvée though here the aromas are slightly more complex. The medium weight flavors are also denser and more powerful with ample minerality and solid power that continues onto the palate coating, balanced and gorgeously long finish. This too is a very fine Gevrey villages and absolutely worth your attention. (Drink starting 2020). |

| BH 94 (1/2015): (from old vines of an indeterminate age.) A markedly ripe yet fresh and cool nose offers up a beguiling array of spice, floral and stone elements that confer serious depth onto the red, blue and black pinot fruit aromas. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is also silky and mineral-driven and the palpable sense of refinement is enhanced by the super fine-grained tannins on the hugely long, firm and beautifully balanced finale. This stunningly good effort should drink well after only 6 to 8 years though it will need fully 12 to 15 to fully peak. Drink 2024+. Outstanding! |

BH 97 (9/2023): Even at 11 years of age, there is relatively little evident development on the moderately restrained nose that displays good ripeness to the spiced green tea, hoisin, soy, anise, sandalwood and rose petal aromas. The cool, pure and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors brim with both minerality and plenty of dry extract that buffers the still moderately firm but not hard shaping tannins on the youthfully austere and seriously persistent finish. While the nose reflects relatively little development, the finish is clearly more supple than it was when I first reviewed it because the dense but fine tannins make their presence felt but they don't dominate. In sum, despite the presence of plenty of volume and muscle, I would still describe the 2012 LT as a wine of finesse. In a word, brilliant. I would note that I tasted another bottle in 2023 that was reduced and bretty, indeed to the point where I did not finish my glass. I have no idea what might have happened but it would be correct to say that it did not resemble what I describe above at all. (Drink starting 2032). VM 97 (3/2016): A wine of almost raw, animal power, the 2012 La Tâche possesses stunning depth and intensity. Savory, floral and red citrus notes are pushed forward in an unusually virile, imposing La Tâche. Readers will have to be patient here, which will not surprise anyone familiar with the vintage. Still, I am taken aback by the wine’s embryonic youthfulness. (Drink between 2027-2062). Antonio Galloni. |

BH 97 (1/2015): A highly spiced and exceptionally fresh, ripe and airy nose mixes a wide variety of mostly red berry fruit aromas though there are background notes of plum, cassis, lavender and oak. The broad-shouldered flavors possess a seductive texture thanks to the copious amounts of dry extract that push the very firm tannic spine to the background. I very much like the concentration here as well as the vibrancy and this is very, very dry in the best sense of the term, indeed it is presently almost crisp yet the very dense supporting tannins are clearly quite ripe. This should be a fantastic Bèze in time and eventually the 2012 could rank among the great vintages for this storied wine. Drink 2032+. WA 96-98 (12/2013): The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru is being matured entirely in new wood as usual. That comes through strongly on the nose but there is sufficient fruit to absorb that after one more winter in barrel. The palate is extremely well balanced with that hint of licorice present right from the entry. The acidity is superbly pitched and it effortlessly glides to a long, lightly spiced, candied finish that Frederic himself commented reminded him of “Zan” (a French confectionary). This is a cerebral Clos de Beze that will deserve a decade in the cellar. VM 93-95 (1/2014): Layers of blue/blackish toned fruit, cloves, smoke and licorice from the backdrop for Rousseau's 2012 Chambertin Clos de Beze. There is plenty of Beze explosiveness and structure in the glass to match the wines' brooding personality and persistence. |

WA 94-96 (12/2013): The 2012 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an exquisite bouquet with fragrant wild strawberry, bergamot and forest floor that simmers with tension, subtle touches of cassis unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, slightly chalky tannins, over a layer of effervescent candied fruit – mandarin and apricot enriching the finish. This is such a pretty thing, surely destined to be irresistible in its youth. VM 92-94 (1/2014): Intensity and volume are the first things that come to mind in the 2012 Charmes-Chambertin. Layers if blue/blackish fruit blossom in a wine that is beautifully textured and vibrant throughout. I very much like the intensity here. I tasted two different barrels of Charmes, both in different states of their evolution, which is why generally speaking I feel the wines aren't fully formed just yet. BH 90-93 (1/2014): (from a 1.4 ha parcel of roughly 20 year old vines that is situated one-third in Charmes proper and the remainder in Mazoyères) A beautifully elegant essence of red berry fruit nose enjoys added breadth in the form of spice, earth and gentle floral nuances. I very much like the sense of freshness and vivacity to the medium weight plus flavors that possess fine detail and a hint of minerality that continues onto the silky and saline-inflected finish. This wine has made a great deal of progress over the past 5 vintages or so and 2012 continues that trend. Drink 2022+. |

VM 88-90 (1/2014): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin is soft, silky and delicate on the palate. Sweet red berries, mint and floral notes meld together nicely in the glass. Today the 2012 is solid, if not quite the overachiever it can be. BH 87-90 (1/2014): (from 7 different vineyards located primarily in the dejection cone east of the village.)An elegant and pure nose features aromas of various wild red berries and plenty of earth and sauvage character. A restrained and cool mouth feel characterizes the lightly mineral and saline-inflected middle weight flavors that possess both good balance and delineation on the lingering finish. This will be approachable young if desired. Drink 2019+. WA 87-89 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of seven parcels and from this year, two less than previous years since they have now been rented to other producers, reducing the village cru from 2.4ha to 1.8ha. It has a fresh bouquet with lifted raspberry and fresh strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet red cherry, quite candied fruit and a long licorice-tinged finish. Fine. |

BH 97 (1/2015): Discreet wood sets off a highly reserved and not quite as overtly ripe nose of dark berries, earth, and animale nuances that are trimmed in notes of spice, in particular anise, sandalwood and exotic tea scents. There is superbly good detail and focused power to the large-scaled flavors that also possess an Outstanding concentration of structure buffering dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the intensely mineral-driven and explosively long finish. This is a youthfully austere example of the genre that is presently quite compact and linear and thus will require at least a decade to flesh out and unwind but if you have the patience to wait it should be a great Chambertin in 20+ years. VM 97 (4/2015): Rousseau's 2012 Chambertin towers out of the glass. Sophisticated, finessed yet also powerful to the core, the 2012 Chambertin captures a compelling range of expressions. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, leather and cedar meld into a huge core of fruit in a dramatic, powerful Chambertin that will require considerable bottle age to show the full breadth of its potential. VM 96+ (3/2015): Healthy medium red. Reticent aromas of redcurrant, black cherry, raspberry and smoky minerality. Hugely concentrated and sweet, but in a distinctly cooler and less expressive style than the Clos de Bèze. Sappy, saline wine with an incredible whiplash of a finish that leaves the palate saturated. Showing more red fruits than black in the early going, this is still an infant. WA 96-98 (12/2013): The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru has an ethereal bouquet with pure raspberry, wild strawberry, orange blossom, hints of iodine and a subtle marine influence. The oak is more integrated at this stage than the Clos de Beze: a multi-dimensional bouquet whose secrets will only be revealed with bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with supremely fine tannins. There is a brooding intensity here – a sense of completeness and harmony that is entrancing. It is not a powerful Chambertin nor even a multidimensional one - at the moment. But it is an effortless Chambertin that will age 20-30 years with little problem, bewitching everywhere it goes. |

WA 93-95 (12/2013): The 2012 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet with lively red berry fruit mixed with bergamot and fresh strawberry. It does not quite have the presence of say Bernard Dugat’s example: more introverted and bashful. The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit on the opening, luscious red berries laced with orange zest and a hint of vanilla. The finish is nigh irresistible – full of vigor and tension with peach on the aftertaste. After a slow opening this finishes with grandeur and ambition. VM 92-94 (1/2014): Delicate and lithe on the palate, the 2012 Mazy-Chambertin is intensely perfumed and sensual. This is typical Mazy. High-toned aromatics and bright red fruits abound in a pretty, sophisticated Burgundy. Vibrant saline notes linger on the finish. BH 91-93 (1/2014): (from Mazis-Bas) There is enough reduction present to hide the underlying fruit though it does appear to be quite ripe. There is excellent punch and power to the big-bodied, intense and muscular flavors that brim with palate coating and tannin buffering dry extract on the pungently mineral-driven and beautifully long finish. This is very Mazis in character yet it's not especially rustic. Drink 2024+. |

BH 95 (1/2015): (from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south-west portion of the vineyard.) Deep ruby. This is also quite floral with excellent ripeness but also fine freshness to the plum, black cherry, cassis and blueberry aromas. The supple but tautly muscular medium weight plus flavors possess a suave mouth feel thanks to the abundant dry extract that both coats the palate and buffers the very firm tannic spine on the highly persistent and imposingly powerful finish. Here too plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2027+. VM 94+ (3/2015): Dark, bright red. Red raspberry, licorice and menthol on the nose, complicated by notes of bitter chocolate and spices. Large-scaled and broad but less forthcoming today than the Chambolle 1er Cru, with dark raspberry, cherry and spice flavors showing a medicinal reserve and a touch of wildness. Shades toward blacker fruits on the dense, sappy back end, which features substantial ripe tannins and strong saline minerality. This very backward, powerful wine will need a long time to fully express itself. Stephen Tanzer. |
