| BH 95 (10/2019): Bright, deep red. Deeper-pitched on the nose than the young 2017, offering aromas of cherry, blueberry, menthol and licorice and an impression of medicinal reserve. A juicy, spicy, impeccably balanced midweight with outstanding clarity and cut and an enticing touch of sweetness leavened by spiciness. Plenty of tannin/acid spine here to frame and carry the fruit through a long, rising, floral finish. This tightly wound beauty shows the sappy quality of the vintage's better examples and should be long-lived. It would be a shame not to give it at least four or five more years of cellaring, if not eight or ten. (13.05% alcohol; September 25 harvest; 45 h/h; 3.39 pH; from what Guillaume d'Angerville described as a good crop, as this vintage escaped the frost, whose effects, he said, did not extend higher than 260 meters: Clos des Ducs is 300 to 325 meters above sea level, with very good air flow to dissipate frost) (Drink between 2025-2042). | VM 91-93 (1/2018): Bright medium ruby. Brooding aromas of black cherry, blueberry and violet. Dense, sappy Volnay with compelling sweetness to its dark berry fruit. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and good saline lift. The estate lost 25% of this parcel to frost, but Guillaume d'Angerville told me that the ultimate crop was actually larger than he thought it would be during the summer. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 94 (10/2019): The 2016 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a classic, undergrowth infused bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of stewed black tea emerging with time, tobacco and rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, succulent and juicy with a fleshy, almost Volnay-like finish that is very appealing. This is a well crafted and comparatively approachable Pommard. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2021-2040). Neal Martin. BH 93 (3/2023): An agreeably fresh and still relatively primary nose freely reveals its aromas of both red and dark berries, newly turned earth and a hint of wood spice. There remains very good vibrancy to the velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors that flash a touch of bracing bitter pit fruit character on the still firm and sneaky long finale. This balanced effort is coming along nicely and while it could certainly be enjoyed now with 30 minutes of air, I would be inclined to hold it for another 5ish plus years first. (Drink starting 2028). |

| VM 91-93 (1/2018): (from four parcels of vines between 40 and 60 years of age; fruit in the lower section of the vineyard was wiped out by the frost): Healthy medium red. Slightly reduced nose conveys and medicinal dark raspberry aroma. Then fine-grained and graceful in the mouth, conveying an impression of delicacy to the flavors of raspberry, currant and flowers. Finishes quite suave and long, with very refined tannins. The Boillots made just 10 barrels in place of a normal 30, 3 of them new. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 91 (4/2018): A pungent nose of wood toast, menthol and reduction presently overwhelms the underlying fruit. The supple, sleek and precise medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension before concluding in a lingering and youthfully austere finish where a hint of bitter fruit pit surfaces. Drink 2024+. Outstanding! VM 91-93 (1/2018): (these vines are 25 to 50 years old; from whiter soil that typical yields a harder, more austere style of wine than the Chevrets): Medium red. More discreet and a bit more medicinal on the nose than the Chevrets. Juicy red berry flavors are lifted by spicy high notes but kept under wraps by salty minerality and a medicinal menthol aspect.. Boasts lovely lift and inner-mouth tension and finishes with very fine-grained tannins, but this very promising wine will require at least a few years of bottle aging to loosen up a bit. | VM 92-95 (1/2018): (there was a lot of frost here, but the Boillots' two parcels of very old vines in Grand Maupertui suffered less than vines at the bottom of the clos; 25 hectoliters per hectare produced; 75% new oak): Good dark red; more deeply colored than Boillot's estate wines from the Côte de Beaune. Lovely perfumed lift to the aromas of red cherry, licorice, spices and flowers. Then fat and thick in the mouth, with dark berry and black cherry flavors energized by salty minerality. Lovely inner-palate tension and flavor complexity here. The tannins are firm but not dusty or dry on the long, rising finish. Boillot does a fermentation integrale for most of his Côte de Nuits wines, vinifying them in barrels, then pressing them and returning them to barrel. This technique makes for gentler extraction and results in an earlier integration of fruit and oak elements, typically yielding rounder, more voluminous wines with silkier tannins but also more structure without dryness. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 91-93 (1/2018): (in order to allow the seeds to ripen, Boillot waited until five days after he picked his Volnays to harvest this fruit on September 28, with 12.8% potential alcohol; 50% new oak): Moderately saturated bright medium red. Brooding aromas of dark fruits and menthol. Chalky and penetrating but youthfully tight, conveying a stronger impression of medicinal reserve than the Volnay Les Caillerets. A distinctly masculine, classic Pommard, juicy but imploded in the early going. The mounting finish features firm, mouth-saturating tannins, hints of spices and white pepper, and savory soil suggestions. The Boillots' holding is in Rugiens-Haut, on white soil and sand with relatively little iron content. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 88 (10/2019): The 2016 Volnay Les Angles 1er Cru comes across a little confit-like on the nose, suggesting that it might have been picked a day or two too late. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, quite bold and assertive in style with a slightly monotone finish that never kicks on. I wonder if this Volnay is simply undergoing an awkward stage? Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy. (Drink between 2021-2032). Neal Martin. BH 90-92 (1/2018): A relatively high-toned and more elegant nose features notes of red currant, cherry, raspberry and a hint of lavender. The super-sleek, indeed almost lacy middle weight flavors display more minerality if less density before terminating in a lingering finish that tightens up noticeably on the dusty and mildly austere finale. (Drink starting 2024). |

BH 91 (4/2021): As it did when I originally reviewed this wine, it has the curious kind of reduction the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis (cassis blossom). Otherwise there is good density and richness to the velvet-textured larger-scaled flavors that possess robust power on the moderately austere and slightly drying finale that isn't exactly rustic, but it would be fair to say that it's not especially refined either. It's hard to predict how this wine will ultimately turn out as the nose is a bit of a concern given that it's been in bottle almost 5 years. By contrast I suspect that the dryness currently displayed by the finish will slowly dissipate with age. I would add that this is still quite youthful so there will be ample time for that to occur. (Drink starting 2031). WA 90 (1/2019): The 2016 Corton Grand Cru is showing well from bottle, unwinding in the glass to blow off a light touch of youthful reduction, revealing aromas of cassis, spices and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated, with juicy acids, powdery tannins and good length on the finish. The 2016 can't match the depth and amplitude of the 2015 rendition, but it's a very good effort. |

JS 94-95 (2/2018): The chalky and stony notes are intermingled with pastry and red to dark cherries, all leading to a palate that shows good acidity, impressive depth and weight of tannins. A cool vintage expression with more intensity at the finish. This will age very well. Try from 2024. BH 93-95 (4/2018): Very, very generous wood treatment is sufficiently toasty to presently dominate the otherwise layered nose of dark cherry, raspberry, earth and sauvage-inflected aromas. There is superb concentration, power and richness to the big-bodied flavors that possess excellent reserves of dry extract that helps to buffer the exceptionally firm tannic spine shaping the superbly long mineral-driven finish. This is at once impressive as hell but it's also very woody and while the underlying material appears to be more than sufficient to eventually integrate the oak, it will require time for this to happen. Drink 2036+. Don't miss! VM 92-95 (1/2018): (these high-altitude vines produced a normal crop in 2016): Moderately saturated dark red. Sexy if slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, tarte au prune and game, with some new oak showing. Very rich, dense and pliant, conveying a distinctly relaxed quality for the vintage. This plump, large-scaled grand cru finishes with superb restrained sweetness, noteworthy finesse of tannins, and serious building length, with its lightly saline black raspberry fruit complemented by an almost chocolatey ripeness. An extremely promising vintage for this wine. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 89-92 (4/2018): An expressive nose speaks of essence of raspberry, earth, sauvage and a hint of wood. The dense super-ripe flavors brim with dry extract that coats the palate and imparts a velvety mouth feel to the mocha, bitter cherry pit and slightly warm finale. This muscular and mildly rustic effort is a very ripe 2016 yet the overall impression is one of freshness and energy. VM 89-92 (1/2018): Good dark red. Very ripe scents of dark raspberry and chocolate. Quite powerful but youthfully bound-up, with the impression of chocolatey richness carrying through the palate. Finishes with big but fine-grained tannins and a serious structure. Perhaps a bit overconcentrated but not out of whack. This wine will clearly need time in bottle to absorb some of its baby fat. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 94 (4/2018): An ultra-spicy and floral-suffused nose speaks of violet, rose petal, lavender, tea and a broad range of dark berry aromas. The highly refined, vibrant and beautifully well-delineated flavors exude evident minerality that continues onto the strikingly long and complex finish. This knockout is textbook Petits Monts. (Drink starting 2028). VM 92+ (1/2018): Bright light-medium red. Lovely aromatic verve to the aromas of raspberry, rose petal, minerals and white pepper. Juicy and firmly built, conveying excellent sneaky intensity to its flavors of red berries, minerals and flowers. Finishes a bit clenched in a positive way but juicy and high-pitched, with a vivacious note of orange zest. This very refined, sharply delineated wine finishes with firm building tannins and lingering salty minerality. I suspect that seven or eight years of aging will bring a more supple texture and an even higher score. (Drink between 2025-2036). Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 95 (7/2022): The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has certainly stepped up in intensity since I last tasted it. Redcurrant, cranberry, juniper berries and just a touch of mint, fine delineation with fine focus. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, perfectly judged acidity, a touch of allspice and white pepper, fanning out gloriously on the expansive finish. Time to raise my previous score. Tasted at Domaine Duroché. (Drink between 2022-2040). Neal Martin. WA 92+ (4/2019): Entirely destemmed, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint-Jacques reveals beautiful aromas of bright cherries and raspberries that mingle with scents of spice, grilled game bird, loamy soil and rose petal. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with good concentration and fine-grained structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish. This will reward bottle age. |

| VM 95-98 (1/2018): Bright ruby. Fruit-driven aromas of crushed black cherry and dark raspberry convey outstanding pungent lift. Incredibly concentrated, sappy and primary, conveying outstanding juicy purity and compelling thickness to its dark fruit and violet flavors. At once hugely powerful and utterly seamless, this wine finishes with great spicy length and lift. A real essence of Burgundy--and likely to evolve gracefully for 25 years or more. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 89-91 (1/2018): A slightly more elegant nose is composed mostly by notes from the red side of the fruit spectrum along with evident floral elements. While there is certainly good density this is more 'Chambollesque' than the old vines cuvée with a finer mouthfeel to the middle weight flavors that offer fine length on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish. Lovely. Drink 2022+. |

| BH 91 (1/2019): This is actually aromatically similar to the Echézeaux at present with its mildly reductive nose that is slightly earthier and not quite as spicy. There is by contrast both more volume and more concentration as well to the bold, robust and broad-shouldered flavors that possess a velvety mid-palate that contrasts markedly with the distinctly firm and austere if slightly drying finish where it's not entirely clear that it will eventually harmonize. A question mark. (Drink starting 2031). |

BH 92 (1/2019): Here too there is a touch of reduction that pushes the notes of red currant, cherry, violet and spice elements to the background. There is though good freshness to richer and even more full-bodied flavors that possess outstanding concentration thanks to the abundance of dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the slightly less structured finale that also offers fine length and solid depth. As pretty as this is though, it can't match the evident class of the Gaudichots good as it is. (Drink starting 2028). VM 89 (7/2018): The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a floral bouquet, quite earthy in style but well defined. The palate has a structured, rather backward opening with grainy tannin and a savory, meaty finish that suggests this will be best enjoyed in its youth. (Drink between 2019-2025). Neal Martin. |

BH 92 (7/2023): As it was when last reviewed from bottle (see herein), there is a vague touch of reduction on the still somewhat reluctant nose of ripe black fruit, spice and soft floral nuances. There is both excellent volume and richness to the sleek and refined mineral-driven middle weight flavors that display fine length is perhaps not quite as much depth as one might like to see. With that duly noted, this has not yet peaked even if it's not so structured that it couldn't be enjoyed now even though my advice would be to continue to hold for another 5 to 8 years. (Drink starting 2028). VM 88 (7/2018): The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Petit Monts 1er Cru has a very reduced nose with floral scents trying to escape the SO2. The palate is balanced with a sweet core of red fruit, rather sorbet-like with a chewy finish that does not quite articulate the propitious vineyard. (Drink between 2019-2025). Neal Martin. |

| BH 90-92 (1/2018): Moderate amounts of wood and menthol characters serve as a less than neutral backdrop for the earth and sauvage-inflected dark pinot fruit-suffused nose. The supple, round and unusually forward flavors possess a seductive mouthfeel though the finish immediately tightens up which suggests that this will need the better part of a decade to reach its apogee. | BH 89-91 (1/2018): (from 4 different parcels scattered above and below the 1ers and the blend of vines averages about 35 years of age; in 2016 it also includes the production from Les Chaignots and Les Chênes Carteaux.) A more deeply pitched nose is composed by notes of plum, dark raspberry, earth and a hint of wood. There is excellent volume to the relatively sleek medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of sappy dry extract, all wrapped in a firm finish that is also less rustic than usual. This too is worth checking out. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

BH 95 (1/2019): (50+ year old vines located in the lower section of the Clos.) A distinctly earthy and very ripe nose flashes notes of plum, dark currant, violet, mocha and discreet but not invisible wood. The rich, full-bodied and powerful big-bodied flavors terminate in mouth coating, youthfully austere and impressively long finish. This terrific if very backward effort is a classic Clos de Vougeot of power and restraint that will require ample cellar time. Drink 2036+. WA 93 (1/2019): The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is showing well from bottle, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, cassis and spices, subtly framed by new wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and nicely concentrated, its chassis of velvety tannin largely cloaked in juicy fruit, concluding with a nicely delineated finish. It's comparatively elegant in style. The 2016 is derived almost exclusively from Grivot's holdings at the bottom of the vineyard as his higher-lying plots were ravished by frost. |

BH 91-94 (1/2018): (from 70+ year old vines.) Here the wood treatment isn't subtle though neither is it sufficient to overshadow the wonderfully fresh and layered nose of blue pinot fruit, cassis, earth and broad range of spice elements. The mouthfeel of the broad-shouldered flavors is equally seductive and even sleeker but despite the generous mid-palate there is solid muscle and a firm core of tannins supporting the powerful and driving finish. As big as this is, it still manages to remain refined and well-balanced. Lovely stuff but once again, extended patience will be required if you wish to experience this at its peak. Drink 2031+. Outstanding! VM 91-93 (1/2018): Full red-ruby. Pure, subtly perfumed aromas of blackberry, spices and licorice. Dense but youthfully linear, showing lovely finesse of texture to its tight-grained flavors of dark fruits, spices and saline minerality lifted by violet. With its compact kernel of fruit, this is neither sweet nor easygoing today, but its precision and definition call to mind a 2014, or even a 2010. Finishes classically dry and firmly tannic, with very persistent flavors of black fruits, spices and bitter chocolate. This very promising wine will need time in bottle to harmonize and expand. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 91-93 (1/2018): A slightly fresher if earthier and less obvious spicy nose displays notes of essence of red currant and a discreet floral touch. There is a sleek muscularity to the much more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that deliver excellent punch and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and complex finale. This is quite firm and a bit youthfully austere as well but I suspect that the impeccable balance will allow it to be enjoyable young. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! VM 90-92 (1/2018): Slightly reduced and a bit lower-pitched than the Rouges, offering aromas of black raspberry complicated by soil tones. Plusher, sweeter and more pliant on entry than the Rouges, then juicy and alive in the middle palate but a bit inexpressive in the early going. Tightens up on the back end, finishing with a firm edge. A bit disorganized today and in need of further elevage. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 89-91 (1/2018): Moderate wood influence still allows the spicy red and dark currant aromas trimmed in warm earth to shine. There is both good volume and concentration to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that display a sleek muscularity on the more slightly complex and persistent finale. This is quite firm and serious but even so I would describe it as more Vosne than Nuits in 2016. A quality villages. Drink 2024+.Outstanding! VM 89-92 (1/2018): Dark red with ruby highlights. Subtle scents of black cherry and dark raspberry complicated by menthol and violet. Juicy, spicy and energetic but a bit youthfully imploded, displaying an almost metallic minerality; aeration brought suppler notes of redcurrant and earth and a sexy spicy sweetness. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 97 (1/2019): (from Richebourg proper.) Here too there is a touch of wood hovering in the background of the reticent but wonderfully spicy, airy and cool array of mostly dark berry fruit and floral aromas. The tautly muscular and intensely mineral-driven large-scaled flavors possess innate power that drench the palate in dry extract while delivering gorgeous depth and length on the dusty and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. This is magnificent though like the Clos de Vougeot and the Echezeaux, it would be virtually pointless to open a bottle young and besides, there is so much potential that it would be a shame to waste it. Drink 2038+. VM 95-98 (1/2018): Bright red with ruby tones. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate are lifted by a violet topnote. Utterly suave on entry, conveying outstanding precision and energy to its flavors of black and blue fruits and crushed rock, with a piquant hint of bitter orange marmalade contributing to the overall impression of nobility. Suave, toothdusting tannins are totally supported by fruit and the seamless, palate-saturating finish perfumes the mouth with minerals, violet and Valrhona bitter chocolate, going on for a minute or more. As charismatic as this young Richebourg is today, it's far from the most demonstrative wine in the cellar. It will need at least a decade of bottle aging and should last for at 25 to 30 years in a cool cellar. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 92-95 (1/2018): (Grivot is aging this wine in 50% new oak but seasoned the barrels first with a Chardonnay vinification; all of the fruit from the lower section of this site was lost to frost but the terraces were unaffected): Bright red-ruby. Pure but reticent scents of dark raspberry, bitter chocolate and spices are accented by a touch of gunflint minerality. Sappy and fine-grained, offering terrific intensity and depth to its precise flavors of dark berries and spices. Grivot has long thought that his Aux Brûlees vines on a south-facing terrace are too sun-drenched in warmer years, but he noted that this is the first vintage he has really liked for its energy and sophistication, describing the wine as "less Brigitte Bardot than normal." He credits this to more intracellular fermentation with a higher percentage of whole berries. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91-94 (1/2018): A cool, super-fresh and restrained nose offers up airy aromas of essence of black pinot fruit, violet, anise and a discreet hint of wood spice. The dense, powerful and muscular big-bodied flavors possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, which is important because the tannic spine is unmistakably present on the robust and mineral-driven finish. While it would not be entirely fair to describe this as rustic, it flirts with it, yet a fine Brûlees almost always becomes seductive in time. Recommended if you have the patience to cellar it for the longer-term. Drink 2031+. Outstanding! |

VM 93 (10/2019): The 2016 Echézeaux Les Loachausses Grand Cru has a very detailed and focused bouquet. My instinct tells me that this is already beginning to close down compared to its showing from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a fine bead of acidity, silky smooth in texture with a caressing white pepper tinged, black cherry and bilberry finish. There is still a little oak to be subsumed, but given the frost that affected this vineyard, this is a great success for Anne Gros. Tasted at the Domaine Direct Tasting in London. (Drink between 2021-2042) Neal Martin. WA 93 (1/2019): The 2016 Echezeaux Grand Cru exhibits aromas of dark berries, baking chocolate, grilled squab, Asian spices and a subtle framing of toasty new oak, followed by a full-bodied, ample and expansive palate with a nicely layered, concentrated core, juicy acids and fine structuring tannins. Fifty percent of the crop was lost to spring frosts, so it's no surprise that the wine is deeper and more intense than the 2017 rendition. |

| BH 93 (4/2019): Only a trace of wood influence frames gamy red and dark currant aromas that are liberally laced with spice and earth hints. As is usually the case, the mouth feel of the middle weight plus flavors is powerful, tautly muscular and energetic while offering excellent depth and length on the serious, markedly austere and very backward finish where touches of wood and warmth show up. While I suspect that this will be approachable after only 8 to 10 years, it will need the better part of 20 to arrive at its full potential. Drink 2034+. |

| BH 93-95 (4/2018): Lafarge explained that this was made from fruit that was destemmed by hand using what the Burgundians call a claie en osier, or a lattice made of wicker that was placed on top of a fermenter; this approach was sometimes used in the 19th C). A dazzlingly pure, fresh and soaring nose features notes of essence of red cherry, currant, spice and soft floral scents. While the medium weight flavors do not have the same size and power of the Clos des Chênes, they are notably finer with a sleek muscularity and terrific length on the highly refreshing and energetic finish. This is really lovely stuff and a complete knock-out. Drink 2031+. Don't miss! Outstanding! |

WA 93-95 (12/2017): The 2016 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru includes 85% whole-bunch fruit and is matured in 50% new oak. It was picked around 24 to 29 September. It has a fresh and discrete bouquet at first, the whole bunch influencing the red fruit, infusing scents of autumn leaves and Earl Grey into the mix. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good grip in the mouth, building with time to a very composed, classically styled, quite persistent and lightly spiced finish whereby the whole bunch is completely subsumed by the fruit. Wonderful. VM 92-94 (1/2018): (38 hectoliters per hectare produced; vinified with 85% whole clusters, down from a normal 100%; aging in 50% new oak, vs. 33% for the premier cru and village wine): Healthy dark red. Captivating perfume of red berries, spices and flowers lifted by a sexy herbal element from the stems. Silky, dense and concentrated, showing terrific precision and a sappy personality to its complex flavors of red berries, brown spices, underbrush and dried flowers. Lovely fruit intensity here. Very firm and built to age but even today there is nothing hard about this grand cru. Finishes very long and sweet, with refined tannins. I'm not sure that this wine will ever go through an extended sullen phase in bottle. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91-93 (1/2018): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine ages - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age; made with 85% whole cluster and 50% new wood.) An overtly floral suffused nose offers up ripe aromas of red currant, rose petal, plum and a hint of exotic spice. There is first-rate punch to the bigger and richer yet still well-defined medium weight plus flavors that possess very good if not exceptional length on the nicely complex finish. This is certainly pretty but it doesn't appear, at least at this early juncture, to have the class and sheer substance of either the 2014 or the 2015. Time will of course tell but for the moment, I would describe the 2016 Clos des Lambrays as very good rather than excellent. Drink 2028+. |

| VM 92 (10/2019): The 2016 Corton-Grancey Grand Cru is deeper in colour than its peers with blackberry and raspberry fruit, hints of mulch-like undergrowth and wilted violets. This is quite complex, even if it misses a little joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, quite precise and classy towards the finish that shows impressive integration of oak and substance. This is a well crafted, very typical Corton that should age with style. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2022-2036). Neal Martin. |

Bourgogne Rouge Lightly Bin-Soiled Label |

VM 89 (1/2018): Bright medium red. Lively perfume of raspberry, blood orange and flowers. Very pretty, leanish wine with excellent intensity and definition to its flavors of red fruits and flowers. This delightful Bourgogne includes a lot of Beaune villages and premier cru fruit, as production in these vineyards was too tiny to merit separate bottlings. Leroux made 10,000 bottles of this wine, and it's one to seek out. WA 88 (12/2017): The 2016 Bourgogne Rouge was aged in wooden tank, bottled mid-October and includes a potpourri of vineyards from here, there and everywhere that had been frosted. This has a delightful bouquet with vivid red cherry and strawberry fruit that is well defined and probably more like a village cru. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh red berry fruit mixed with bay leaf and a touch of black tea. I was smitten by this modest generic red and I bet it will be good value for money. BH 87 (4/2018): A pretty and very fresh nose is composed by notes of both red and dark berries and soft earth wisps. The sleek and delicious middle weight flavors possess good volume and a relatively refined mouth feel before concluding in a mildly austere and lingering finale. This is really quite good and worth considering. (Drink starting 2020). |

| |
| VM 91-94 (1/2018): (the estate owns five plots on a range of different soil, with the vines averaging about 60 years of age): Moderately saturated medium red. Aromas of cherry, strawberry and raspberry accented by brown spices; the nose suggests a bigger wine than the Clos Saint-Denis. The large-scaled and deeper in the mouth but tightly wound, with its red fruit flavors complicated by soil-driven notes of menthol, stone, dried flowers, spices and underbrush. A bit more powerful and tannic than the Clos Saint-Denis, this wine will also require a minimum of five or six years of aging upon release. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 90 (10/2019): The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussières 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with rose petal infused redcurrant and raspberry fruit. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, quite firm in the mouth like a Morey-Saint-Denis, with a bright and well-defined, sorbet-fresh finish. Pert! Give this three to five years in bottle. Tasted at the Domaine. Neal Martin. |

| VM 93 (10/2019): The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées impressed me from barrel and now in bottle, it is certainly fulfilling its potential. Served blind at a restaurant in Beaune, it offers copious plush red fruit on the nose laced with subtle limestone scents. The palate is beautifully balanced with velvety smooth tannins, immense depth for a Village Cru with a purity on the finish that is completely disarming. I doubt that you will find many Village Crus that will surpass this little gem from Lignier. Tasted blind at La Superbe restaurant. Neal Martin. |

| BH 90-92 (1/2018): (25% whole cluster.) Deep ruby color. Reduction flattens the underlying fruit at present though there is both good freshness and verve to the delicious, powerful and admirably concentrated big-bodied flavors that possess a subtle minerality that really comes to the fore on the rustic, serious and built-to-age finish. A classic Chenevery. Drink 2026+. |

| VM 93 (10/2019): The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru has a well defined and quite complex bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and briary aromas, very focused and harmonious and the oak nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, well judged acidity, very harmonious with a gentle, blackberry and mulberry-tinged finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. | BH 90-93 (1/2018): Here the wood treatment is no longer subtle and it completely dominates the underlying spice and fruit scents. On the plus side there is excellent concentration to the rich and full-bodied flavors that possess evident power and muscularity while delivering excellent length on the slightly warm finish where the wood sweetens it. This too is youthfully awkward at present and note that my range offers the benefit of the doubt that, like the Ech, this will harmonize if given at least a few years of bottle age first. | BH 90 (4/2018): This is actually aromatically quite similar to the nose of the old vines Chassagne cuvée but with just a bit more complexity. As is usually the case there is more volume and richness to the velvety middle weight flavors though the texture contrasts substantially with the muscular, firm and quite serious finish that is presently youthfully austere though only mildly rustic. While the first two wines should drink well young, this would best be cellared for at least a few years first. (Drink starting 2023). |

| VM 94 (10/2019): The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussière is tightly-wound on the nose with blackberry, raspberry, hints of singed leather and spice. I appreciate the delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, chalky in texture with a grip and certainly impressive focus on the finish. This is an excellent Morey-Saint-Denis. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin. |

| VM 92-94 (1/2018): Bright red-ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of blackberry, licorice and violet complicated by a rocky quality. Pungent, tangy and high-pitched, offering a very fine-grained texture to its flavors of cassis, black cherry and violet; aeration brought a slightly less black note of raspberry and sexy savory soil tones. From vines on very shallow soil just across the Route des Grands Crus from Chambertin, this wine offers terrific punch and building sweetness. Both these vines and those in Mazoyères-Chambertin were planted shortly after World War II but a small part of the Charmes was replanted in 1998. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 95 (8/2020): The 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is consistent with previous notes. It is blessed with an irresistible bouquet that showcases Romain Taupenot's ability to conjure crystalline fruit from this vineyard. Medium-bodied on the palate, not inherently powerful, yet equipped with such a saline, complex finish that you cannot help but immediately return for another sip. This is superb. Neal Martin. |

| BH 93-96 (1/2018): (from 3 different parcels that total 2 ha.) Reduction dominates at present. However there is excellent freshness and underlying tension to the superbly well-concentrated and intensely mineral drive big-bodied flavors that flash plenty of classic Chambertin muscle on the youthfully austere and very backward finish that is explosively long. This is seriously good and the density is such that this is pretty much a block of stone today. Patience, and a lot of it, ist going to be needed here but if you have it, this is potentially a great Chambertin. Drink 2036+. Don't miss! |
