| VM 94 (12/2022): Saturated violet color. Highly expressive, mineral- and spice-accented red and dark berry preserve, floral and olive scents show excellent definition and a hint of smokiness. Unfurls steadily on the palate, which offers sweet black raspberry, blueberry, olive paste and allspice flavors and a strong snap of black pepper. Well-knit tannins add grip to the finish, which lingers with strong, mineral-driven tenacity. (Drink between 2025-2034). Josh Raynolds. |

| WA 93-95 (3/2021): Assembled from 14 different plots (each vinified and aged separately for the first year), the 2019 Gigondas boasts lovely aromas of garrigue, spice, orange zest, licorice, black cherries and raspberries. This vintage is about 60% Grenache (aged in foudres and demi-muids), with a balance of mainly Syrah and Mourvèdre (both aged in smaller barrels). It's full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a long, softly dusty finish. It lacks the easy approachability of the 2018 but is more concentrated and should age particularly well. |

| JD 97-99 (2/2022): A potential candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2019 Hermitage is a massive, full-bodied, yet mineral-laced and undeniably classic wine from this estate. All of the components showed incredibly well, with the Le Méal offering classic sexiness, the Hermite being straight and focused, and the Bessards just as good as any Syrah out there. It shows the ripeness of the vintage, yet the purity of fruit is incredible. It’s another magical wine in an incredible series of awesome Hermitage from this family. |

JD 95 (12/2022): The 2019s, now from bottle, are pure gold at this estate, and this is clearly a great vintage for this incredible family. Beautifully perfumed with red, black, and blue fruits as well as iron and leather, the 2019 Cornas Renaissance hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a ripe, rounded mouthfeel, and a sunny, opulent character that already offers pleasure. This will nevertheless benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and, I suspect, have 15 years of longevity. VM 94 (12/2022): Opaque ruby. Intensely perfumed aromas of dark berry liqueur, succulent flowers, olive paste and baking spices show very good clarity and mineral lift. Juicy blackberry, kirsch, chewing tobacco and floral pastille flavors display sharp definition and take on a smoky aspect with air. The long, energetic finish features building tannins and resonating spice, smoke and mineral nuances. Josh Raynolds. |

| JD 98 (11/2021): Tasted out of bottle, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape is a stunning example of this estate as well as the vintage. Gorgeous kirsch, flowery incense, spice box, and garrigue-like notes define the nose, and it hits the palate with classic Clos des Papes elegance and finesse backed up by a great mid-palate, fabulous concentration, and a monster of a finish. WA 93 (1/2022): The 2019 Cote Rotie La Vialliere starts off deceptively silky and fine, with charming scents of cherries and herbs and a pleasant, medium-bodied mouthfeel, then turns a bit drying and tannic on the finish. Despite its charm, it deserves some time in the cellar and should drink well through 2040. VM 96 (12/2022): Deep violet color. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe, mineral-accented black and blue fruits, licorice, exotic spices and smoky bacon. Offers deeply concentrated yet lively dark berry, kirsch, star anise and candied violet flavors that show excellent clarity and back-end thrust. The mineral and floral notes drive an impressively long and detailed finish that is given shape by steadily building, well-judged tannins. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 95+ (1/2022): The intense, tannic 2019 Cote Rotie les Grandes Places—from vines planted in 1935, 1960 and 1984—needs lots of time to come into a more pleasurable state of drinkability. It's full-bodied, concentrated, dense and tannic, but it shows promising notes of grilled plums and salted licorice on a long, long finish. It's a terrific effort, but one that will require serious patience. VM 96 (12/2022): Glass-staining ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark fruits, baking spices, smoked meat and potpourri, accompanied by building olive and licorice notes. Sappy, sharply delineated blackberry, bitter cherry, licorice and espresso flavors turn sweeter with air and pick up a smoky mineral quality that adds support and back-end cut. Chewy and spicy on the impressively persistent finish, which shows excellent detail and gripping tannins. One-third whole clusters. Josh Raynolds. |

| WA 91 (11/2020): While the 2019 Cotes du Rhone is not a single-estate wine (it's labeled simply Saint Cosme, without the "Château de"), this 100% Syrah is a perennial bargain—and this could be its best vintage to date. Aromas of violets, cracked pepper, cassis and blueberries leap from the glass, while the medium to full-bodied palate is ripe but silky, leading into a long, mouthwatering finish. A blend of fruit from the Gard (the right bank of the Rhône) and Vinsobres (the left bank, about 400 meters above sea level), it retains a sense of freshness not often found in Syrahs from the Southern Rhône. |

Hermitage Les Bessards |

JD 99 (8/2022): My favorite release from this estate is consistently their Les Bessards Hermitage, and their 2019 is no exception. Coming from the western part and pure broken granite soils on the west side of this magical hill, it sports a dense purple hue to go with a brilliant perfume of cassis, graphite, scorched earth, burning embers, spring flowers, and peppery herbs. Incredibly complex, layered, and nuanced, with classic Hermitage characteristics, it still stays firmly planted in the ripe, sunny, sexy vintage. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured on the palate, it has a wealth of tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is pure Hermitage magic that needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and will evolve for 20-30 years in cold cellars. Hats off to the team at Delas for another incredible wine. VM 97 (12/2022): Opaque ruby-red. A highly perfumed and expansive bouquet evokes dark berry and cherry preserves, Indian spices, olive and incense; a smoky mineral nuance emerges as the wine opens up. Fleshy and broad on the palate but surprisingly energetic as well, offering intense, mineral-driven black raspberry, boysenberry, kirsch, allspice and licorice flavors, with a suave touch of candied flowers. Finishes chewy, vibrant and impressively long, with resonating florality and youthfully firm tannins that don't detract from the wine's intense fruit. (Drink between 2029-2039) Josh Raynolds. |

| VM 93 (12/2022): Inky ruby. Dark berries, potpourri, exotic spices and a strong suggestion of smoky minerals on the expansive nose. Juicy, penetrating and finely detailed, offering densely packed, intense blackberry, cherry compote and violet flavors that are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Steadily building tannins add grip to an impressively long, mineral-driven finish that strongly repeats the floral and spice notes. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 91 (1/2022): A blend of four lieux-dits (mainly Le Mollard, but also La Brosse, Fontgeant and La Landonne) that incorporates 3% to 4% Viognier, Gérard's 2019 Cote Rotie delivers tart raspberry fruit, but it balances that with a medium to full-bodied palate, a rich, silky feel and a nicely concentrated, somewhat tannic finish. Give it a couple of years in the cellar and drink it over the next decade or more. VM 93 (12/2022): Saturated magenta. Displays spice-accented kirsch, blackberry, olive and baking spice aromas, along with suggestions of cured tobacco and olive. Juicy, focused and energetic on the palate, offering appealingly sweet cassis, cherry-cola, licorice and spicecake flavors that steadily deepen through the back half. Smooth, even tannins frame a long, lively finish that's given shape by fine-grained tannins. Josh Raynolds. |

|
| |
JD 94 (1/2022): The 2019 Gigondas Cuvée Florence is more concentrated and layered, and this is one of the finest vintages of this cuvée I can remember. Blackberries, sandalwood, cedary garrigue, and hints of tobacco give way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant, yet concentrated 2019 that offers silky tannins and a great finish. Give bottles a handful of years in the cellar and enjoy over the following two decades. VM 94 (1/2023): Deep ruby. Heady dark berry, cherry-cola, vanilla and floral aromas are complicated by hints of white pepper, incense and espresso. Powerful, smoke-laced blackberry compote, kirsch, mocha and fruitcake flavors show impressive depth and gain sweetness with air. This finishes sweet, broad, youthfully tannic and long, leaving behind intense dark fruit and peppery spice notes. This was aged for two years in barriques, 50% of them new. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 98-100 (12/2022): As always, the 2019 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is all Syrah that was not destemmed and will spend four years in new French oak. A wine with perfection written all over it, it's one of the most impressive barrel samples to ever pass this critic's lips. Deep purple/black-hued with a massive, full-bodied, brooding style, it has classic smoky, meaty black fruits, a touch of iron, graphite, tobacco, and pepper, building tannins, and a huge finish. This is pure brilliance in Syrah, yet as with just about every vintage here, it will require a solid decade of bottle age. WA 98-100 (2/2022): The impenetrably dark 2019 Cote Rotie La Landonne represents the essence of this fabled lieu-dit, combining peppery, herbal notions with espresso and roasted meat, all carried by ample plum and black cherry fruit. It's full-bodied, concentrated, richly tannic and long on the finish—simply a superb wine that should be flirting with perfection when it is released in a couple of years. VM 96-98 (5/2020): Powerful, spice- and mineral-accented black/blue fruit liqueur, exotic spice, olive and incense aromas show superb clarity and pick up hints of smoky bacon, mocha and candied licorice with aeration. Sweet, seamless and penetrating in the mouth, offering densely packed boysenberry, cherry liqueur, fruitcake and vanilla flavors and a touch of salty olive paste. Shows outstanding energy on the strikingly persistent finish, which features polished tannins and resonating floral, blue fruit and smoked meat qualities. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 96-98 (2/2022): A more finesse-driven, elegant example of this cuvée, the 2019 Côte Rôtie La Mouline includes a solid amount of Viognier and will see a total of four years in new French oak. Classic La Mouline notes of black raspberries, spring flowers, incense, and pepper give way to a medium to full-bodied, silky, incredibly elegant wine that will shine with only short-term cellaring. VM 96-98 (5/2020): Bright, highly perfumed blueberry, black raspberry, violet and exotic spice aromas, along with a wild touch of blood orange. Juicy and lithe on the palate, offering intense red and blue fruit flavors that stain the palate while showing little in the way of excess weight. Finishes extremely long and sweet, with a building floral note, even tannins and a late jolt of five-spice powder. Josh Raynolds. WA 94-96 (2/2022): While just as aromatic and charming on the nose—where ephemeral floral notes join ripe cherries—as previous years, the 2019 Cote Rotie La Mouline isn't quite as impressive on the palate. It's medium to full-bodied, silky and caressing, without the same power, yet it's supremely elegant. |

| JD 96 (12/2022): The star of the show is the 2019 Côte Rôtie Terrasses, which can thought of as a hypothetical mix of the 2017 and 2018, with perhaps a nod to the 2017. Both red and black fruits, peppery herbs, dried flowers, graphite, and a beautiful sense of minerality define the bulk of the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with fine, building tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. From a vintage that produced ripe, tannic wines, this stays balanced and pure and is loaded with potential. |

| JD 98+ (11/2021): I was able to taste the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvee Chaupin on two occasions, rating it one point higher on one of those as well. Incredible notes of red and black fruits, violets, scorched earth, ground pepper, and Provençal garrigue notes define the nose, and it’s a darker, richer, slightly more powerful wine than usual, while still showing the inherent elegance and finesse this cuvee always shows. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15-20. Don’t miss it! |

| JD 96-99 (10/2020): Lovers of brilliant Châteauneuf du Pape should snatch up bottles of the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which comes mostly from the northeastern sector of the appellation, from the La Janasse lieu-dit as well as from the La Crau lieu-dit. Revealing a deeper ruby/plum color to go with a spectacular bouquet of peppery garrigue, smoked meats, blackcurrants, black cherries, and truffly earth, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness and has no hard edges, with building tannins and another blockbuster of a finish. While this wine is always rich and powerful, it’s the level of elegance and purity that really sets it apart in this vintage. Give bottles 2-3 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 20+ years or more. |

VM 93 (12/2022): Deep violet. Pungent, smoke-tinged blue fruit, floral, game and mineral aromas pick up a spicy nuance as the wine opens up. Appealingly sweet, smoke- and cracked pepper-accented cherry liqueur, blueberry, smoky bacon and violet pastille flavors show very good depth and surprising energy. The spicy note carries through a long, gently tannic finish that leaves a juicy, blue fruit note behind. (Drink between 2025-2035). Josh Raynolds. JD 93 (2/2022): Leading off the bottled reds, the 2019 Côte Rôtie Amethyste would be a great introduction for readers trying to understand the style of this estate. A perfumed, gamey, sun-kissed nose of blue fruits, black peppery and candied violets give way to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured, and (by this estate’s standards) downright charming Côte Rôtie that already offers pleasure. It will keep for 10-15 years. (Drink between 2022-2037). |

JS 95 (2/2022): This youthful Chateauneuf has a very complex nose of graphite, raw meat and lilies. With aeration the black-cherry note steadily grows in intensity. Bold, leathery and earthy palate with fine tannins that build steadily on at the extremely long and straight mineral finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. WA 95-97 (5/2022): The 2019 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée looks set to rival the best examples of this bottling. Made up of approximately 80% Grenache, with 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and smaller amounts of other permitted varieties, it's impressively complex on the nose, with scents of black cherries, blackberries and black olives, plus mysterious wafts of violets and garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it finishes long and velvety, a sure-fire bet for cellaring. |

JD 97 (2/2022): The 2019 Côte Rôtie Côte Blonde is as seamless and silky as they come and is just a quintessential Côte Rôtie. Black raspberries, flowers, ground pepper, and subtle meatiness all emerge from this beauty, and it’s full-bodied, has remarkable tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It certainly offers pleasure today, but smart money will hide bottles for 4-5 years. It will knock your socks off over the following two decades. VM 97 (12/2022): Opaque ruby. Intensely perfumed, spice- and mineral-accented blueberry, kirsch, fruitcake and floral aromas are complemented by suggestions of incense and botanical herbs. Shows superb clarity and mineral thrust to its sweet black and blue fruit, cola, violet pastille and spicecake flavors, which deftly meld depth and vivacity. Finishes extremely long and smooth, with polished tannins and reverberating blue fruit, mineral and floral notes. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 98+ (2/2022): More black raspberry, camphor, graphite, peppered meat, and powdered rock notes emerge from the 2019 Côte Rôtie Le Vialliere, another flat-out incredible wine from this family. Much straighter and more focused than the more opulent La Landonne, it has a dense mid-palate, ultra-fine tannins, full-bodied richness, and perfect balance. It’s singular, heavenly wine that needs to be forgotten for 5-7 years, and it should see its 30th birthday in fine form. VM 97 (12/2022): Glass-staining ruby color. Smoke- and mineral-accented cherry and blackberry scents show superb clarity, and licorice and olive nuances build in the glass. Gently sweet, penetrating dark berry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors are underscored by a smoky mineral element and pick up an exotic spice nuance with air. Fleshes out slowly on the fabulously long well-delineated finish, which is framed by solid (but in no way severe) tannins that blend very slowly into the wine's deep, dark fruit. Note that there is no 2020 bottling of this wine as there was too little quantity; thus, it was all blended into the Ampodium, much to that wine's benefit. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 92-94 (10/2020): Deeper and more concentrated than the 2018, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape is as impressive as I can remember this cuvee ever being. Dark in hue, overflowing with dark fruit, full-bodied and velvety in texture, with a long, licorice-tinged finish, this looks very promising. JD 91-93 (10/2020): Moving to the 2019 reds, the classic 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape offers a textbook Clos Saint Jean perfume of kirsch liqueur, blackcurrants, toasted spices, graphite, and peppery garrigue. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Châteauneuf with beautiful tannins, a great mid-palate, and just an overall sense of balance paired with plenty of richness and length. Beautifully done, it’s going to offer 10-15 years of prime drinking. |

JD 97-100 (10/2020): Even deeper colored, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Deus-Ex Machina reveals a saturated purple hue as well as a blockbuster, more masculine bouquet of smoked blackcurrants, chocolate, ground pepper, bouquet garni, and assorted cured meat-like nuances. Based on a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre, with the Grenache brought up in tank and the Mourvèdre brought up in demi-muid, this beauty is full-bodied, packs serious power, has an awesome mid-palate, and one monster of a finish. A solid 4-5 years of bottle age are warranted, but it’s going to keep for 20-25 years or more. WA 95-97 (10/2020): Much like the La Combe des Fous, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina seems denser and more concentrated and powerful than the more elegant 2018. Purple fruit and dark chocolate retain a remarkable degree of freshness in this full-bodied, velvety-textured and arguably over-exuberant puppy. There's tremendous material here, compressed into a potent ball of vinous energy that I expect will develop some more nuance and elegance over time. |

JD 97-99 (10/2020): Always the most elegant cuvee in the lineup from this team, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Combe Des Fous checks in as a normal blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Vacqueyras and Cinsault. It just screams Provence on the nose, with loads of blackcurrants, lavender, white chocolate, ground pepper, and assorted Asian spice-like aromas and flavors all jumping from the glass. With full-bodied richness, a multi-dimensional, layered mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish, this is another beautiful, seamless, elegant yet also incredibly powerful wine from this estate that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for 15-20 years or more. WA 94-96 (10/2020): Plummy and chocolaty yet remarkably vibrant, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous comes across as richer and more powerful than the 2018. I'm not sure that's a good thing in this cuvee, as it's full-bodied, dense and a bit chunky at the moment—certainly enormously impressive, but without the elegance of the previous vintage. It will be interesting to see how it compares once it's in the bottle. |

| |
| JD 100 (11/2021): Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve is another magical wine, and I might have rated this cuvee a perfect score more than any other Southern Rhône. Unquestionably in the same realm as the 2017, 2016, 2010, 2005, 2003, and 2001, it has an incredible, full-bodied, massive style that somehow stays perfectly balanced, with flawless integration of its fruit, tannins, acidity, and alcohol. Lots of red, blue, and black fruits, loamy earth, Asian spice, licorice, and violet nuances emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building yet polished tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s a sexier, more opulent wine than the Les Hauts-Lieux release yet has the same perfect tannins that are so rare to find in the vintage. This required at least 4-5 years of bottle age and will drink brilliantly for 20-25+ years. |
