| WA 88 (4/2002): Marc Sorrel had just bottled his 1999s before my visit. The 1999 Hermitage revealed a soft, curranty character with surprisingly tart acidity. While it is an elegant, medium-bodied, pure offering, it is austere and lacks the density and power of his 1998, or 1997 for that matter. It will need to be drunk early in life as it will become more attenuated with aging. |

| WA 90 (9/2015): More straight and focused than the 1998 or 2000, the 1999 Hermitage le Greal is a classically styled Hermitage (the 1999 was mostly destemmed) that has solid minerality in its smoked meats, red and black fruits, licorice and peppery aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, mature and slightly straightforward, it's drinking nicely but should hold through 2020. |

| VM 93 (3/2016): Bright purple. Potent scents of cherry pit, blueberry liqueur, licorice and bitter chocolate, accompanied by a smoky accent that builds in the glass. Densely packed and alluringly sweet, offering smoky black and blue fruit, spicecake, olive and floral pastille flavors energized by a jolt of cracked pepper. Smooth, harmonious tannins come in late on the sappy, smoky, impressively long finish. (Drink between 2021-2027). Josh Raynolds. |

WA 97+ (12/2017): Marc Sorrel says, “I think it’s the best vintage I’ve made,” of the whole-cluster-fermented 2015 Hermitage Le Greal, and who am I to argue with that? It’s a profoundly deep and intense wine, rich in mouth-drying tannins, yet packed with cassis fruit and notes of licorice, mocha and black olives. Give this full-bodied wine another 7 years in the cellar, and drink it over the next two decades. VM 95 (4/2018): Lurid violet. Heady, expansive aromas of black raspberry, cassis, green olive, incense and violet carry an exotic spice overtone. Densely packed and focused on the palate, displaying superb clarity to the sappy dark fruit preserve, floral pastille and spicecake flavors. Distinctly powerful, yet there's surprisingly liveliness here as well. Finishes extremely long and sweet, featuring intense mineral thrust, a spicy cracked pepper note and mounting tannins. Josh Raynolds. |
