WA 97 (10/2009): I believe the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is the finest wine ever made at Charvin. Their wines never achieve a lot of color, but this is one of the most saturated ones they have produced. The blend from the 45- to 50-year-old vines is 85% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre, and Vaccarese, all aged in cement tanks prior to being bottled unfiltered. A terrific nose of kirsch, lavender, licorice, forest floor, and spice box soars from the glass of this full-bodied effort. With fabulous density, a multidimensional mouthfeel, and a 45+-second finish this brilliant, elegant, feminine-styled wine is loaded with concentration and intensity. Like many 2007 Chateauneuf du Papes, the extraordinary fruit level makes it hard to resist. However, it will be even better in 3-5 years, and should last for 15-20. WS 95 (11/2009): Even though this is crammed with fig and currant paste notes, it maintains a racy, silky feel, thanks to perfectly embedded structure and a complex backdrop of incense, charred mesquite, shiso leaf and freshly ground espresso. This has ample grip, but it's extremely graceful¿a deft act in this vintage. Best from 2010 through 2030. 2,500 cases made. VM 92-95 (2/2009): Bright ruby. A strikingly complex bouquet of red and dark berries, kirsch, Asian spices and garrigue Very pure, fresh raspberry and blackberry flavors supported by a sexy undercurrent of tangy minerals. A candied floral quality builds on the finish, which refuses to let go. Impresses with elegance and clarity rather than brute force. |

JD 97 (9/2012): My favorite vintage of this wine to date, the absolutely brilliant 2010 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape exudes class and purity on both the nose and palate. It has knockout aromatics of sweet red and black fruits, lavender, wild herbs, and searing minerality that flow to a full-bodied, powerful, and concentrated 2010 that has awesome density and richness, yet also stays fresh, ethereal, and light on the palate. It’s winner, yet it needs 4-6 years of bottle age to integrate its tannin; It will thrill for over two decades! JLL ***** (12/2011): Dark robe; raspberry-blackberry aroma that gives plenty of fruit, nicely sweet fruit, on display with some darker, licorice-style notes in the backdrop. There is a “murmur" of herbs, lovely floral drifts. The palate commences well - an engaging mix of plump fruit and clear, fresh movement. It is all very consecutive - there is enjoyable drinking in prospect. An STGT style of Châteauneuf, one that has plenty of juice and length. It has harmony and balance in abundance. It is a softly-softly wine, very good. It is long, and finishes on a pocket of late pepper. From mid-2013. WA 95+ (10/2012): More backward and concentrated, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as dense, black raspberry, black currant, garrigue, licorice and lavender characteristics. Full-bodied with undeniable elegance, minerality and precision, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring and should keep well for 15-20. VM 95 (2/2013): Bright purple. Heady red and dark berry preserve and floral aromas, with bright spice and mineral nuances adding vivacity. Concentrated but impressively energetic, offering sappy black raspberry and blueberry flavors that are firmed by zesty minerality. Smoothly plays richness off finesse, finishing on a resonating note of candied flowers. WS 95 (12/2013): A juicy and brambly style, with thick plum skin, raspberry and blackberry fruit at the core, lined with toasted spice, roasted apple wood and dark licorice snap notes. The dark fruit is offset nicely by a perfumy black tea note, and the finish is lined with a fine minerality, with nice grip for balance overall. There's lots of range to this, and it should age beautifully. Best from 2015 through 2030. 500 cases imported. |

WA 94 (10/2013): Looking at the Chateauneufs, and a gorgeous example of the vintage as well as one of the top wines, Laurent’s 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape (85% Grenache and the balance Syrah, Mourvedre and Vaccarese) offers up an elegant, seamless profile with pretty aromas and flavors of sweet cherries, licorice, rose petal, ground pepper and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, pure and with building richness, it has a glossy, textured profile on the palate that’s hard to resist. While approachable, it has the mid-palate, freshness and overall balance to evolve gracefully for 10-12 years. Drink now-2023. JLL **** (6/2013): hiny dark red; has a knit-together red berry aroma that shows a coffee intensity inside, a hint of spirit, and herb and heather airs. The palate starts on a supple note, has an oily, rather rich middle that is followed by cooler, grain moments. Solid wine without being full weight. At a raw good stage; it extends its fruit with licorice, herb and tea infusions present - they give a tang. Good typical Grenache heart in this juicy, round wine. There is plenty of rolling matter on the end. “It has balance, and its freshness is delicate; it is rich, with a tiny bit less tannin than 2010. There is a very sympa side to the 2011s,” Laurent Charvin. From 2015. VM 93 (1/2014): Brilliant ruby-red. Complex, seductive bouquet of raspberry and cherry preserves, pungent herbs and fresh lavender. Juicy, penetrating and pure, with superb clarity and lift to its sweet red fruit flavors. Silky tannins give shape to the finish, which clings with Outstanding tenacity and resonating florality. I find this elegant Chateauneuf extremely easy to drink now but it has the depth and balance to reward at least another six years of patience. WS 92 (7/2014): A densely packed red, offering a ganache frame to the singed orange peel, tobacco, fresh espresso and mulled fig and currant fruit flavors. Strong juniper and bittersweet cocoa notes line the finish. A gutsy style, showing good cut. Best from 2015 through 2023. 300 cases imported. |
