WA 96 (10/2012): An absolutely profound offering, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige requires 5-6 years of cellaring given its massive concentration and tannic structure. The wine was relatively closed the day I tasted it, but it did display an inky/purple color along with hints of camphor, graphite, creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice and espresso beans. Full-bodied and moderately tannic with gorgeous freshness, glycerin and a skyscraper-like texture, this superb cuvee should be at its finest between 2018-2030+. JD 95+ (9/2012): As with the 2011, the 2010 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Prestige shows lots of similarities to the Cuvee Reservee, yet has better tannin (which is saying something), as well as an old vine sappiness to the fruit and a touch more barrique. A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, and 5% Counoise and Vaccarese that is from 90+ year-old vines and aged in foudre and 1-year-old demi-muids, it has thrilling aromatics of kirsch liqueur, black raspberry, melted licorice, graphite, and copious amounts of spice and garrigue that just come soaring from the glass. Full-bodied, concentrated, and vividly fresh and focused, with masses of polished tannin and an elegant texture, this rock star 2010 needs 3-5 years of bottle age, yet will evolve gracefully for 2 decades or more. VM 93 (1/2013): Opaque purple. Explosive aromas of candied black and blue fruits, incense and lavender, with suave mocha and Indian spice nuances adding complexity. Lush and expansive but very lively, offering intense black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a strong floral pastille quality. Supple tannins add shape to a strikingly long, seamless and floral finish. |

JD 98+ (8/2009): A gorgeous bottle of wine, the 2007 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret des Sabon is filled with blackberry and cassis fruit that’s intermixed with seared meat, blood, spice, licorice and garrigue aromas. With air, this picks up graphite, charcoal and mineral nuances and it’s perfumed, ripe and decadent. The palate is full bodied and perfectly balanced with stunning fruit, a thick texture, fresh acids and a blockbuster finish. I’d give this 5 to 7 years and then drink over the following 25+. WA 97+ (10/2009): More closed and restrained than normal is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret des Sabon. The Sabon family has always been “secretive" about the blend used for this cuvee, but they do acknowledge that about 90% Grenache is combined with a field blend from vines over 100 years of age. Yields are microscopic, averaging 8-12 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine is aged one year in used 600-liter demi-muids. In the years it has been made (the first commercial vintage was 1998, although a small amount was made for the family in 1990, 1995, and 1996), this cuvee often borders on pure perfection (i.e., 1998 and 2001). The 2007 is too backward at this stage to go that far out on a limb, but it possesses a dense plum/purple color to the rim as well as an extraordinary perfume of cedarwood, tobacco leaf, creosote, licorice, black fruits, smoke, and a smell and taste of highly-charred meat with the essence of blood. This extraordinarily full-bodied, but forebodingly backward wine is more inaccessible than the 1998 or 2001 were at a similar stage of development, but it is an enormous, massively-endowed Chateauneuf du Pape that represents the concentrated blood of an old vineyard. The finish is virtually endless, lasting well past a minute. It will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 25-35 years thereafter. VM 96 (2/2010): Inky ruby. Exotic aromas of black raspberry, boysenberry, cassis, floral oils and incense, with notes of licorice and sassafras coming up with air. Fleshy, seductively sweet red and dark berry liqueur flavors stain the palate, with floral pastilles and succulent herbs providing added complexity. Very rich but also compellingly lithe and balanced, with superb finishing clarity and sexy floral and spice character. I'd bet on this wine being delicious throughout its life. |

JD 99 (8/2018): Unquestionably the deepest, richest wine in the lineup, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret des Sabon offers sensational notes of blackberries, cassis, crushed rocks, graphite, and bouquet garni. Full-bodied, ultra-fine, seamless, and pure, it has more elegance and purity than the 2010 and is reminiscent of the 2001. It's a gorgeous, extraordinary, layered, seamless Châteauneuf-du-Pape to drink over the coming two decades or more. VM 95 (7/2018): Lurid ruby. Ripe red berries, cherry liqueur and hints of musky herbs, vanilla and potpourri on the highly perfumed, mineral-accented nose. Palate-staining Chambord and cherry flavors show excellent clarity, supple texture and a hint of spicecake that builds slowly as the wine opens up. The energetic, seamless, impressively long finish repeats the floral and red fruit notes, while rounded tannins add shape and gentle closing grip. Josh Raynolds. |

| JD 97 (11/2022): Last of the wines from bottle, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Secret Des Sabon is a field blend of mostly Grenache that sees a touch of stem inclusion and aging all in oak tronconique tanks. A candidate for the wine of the vintage, it has a similar bouquet to the Prestige and has beautiful red and black fruits (even some blue fruits), flowers, garrigue, and spice. This carries to a full-bodied 2020 with a layered, seamless mouthfeel, moderate acidity, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. It doesn’t get much better than this in 2020! Drink this sexy, seamless, incredibly compelling Châteauneuf du Pape over the coming 15+ years. |
