WA 95-96 (12/2015): A wine that will be in bottle by the time you read this, the 2012 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis (it always incorporates 7% Viognier) will check in behind the sensational 2009 and 2010, but should be on par with the 2005 and 2003. Cassis, licorice, smoked meats, graphite and peppery spice all emerge from this beautifully concentrated, full-bodied, seamless Cote Rotie that has building, ripe tannin, terrific purity and a blockbuster finish. It will have 20-25 years of longevity.
JLL **** (12/2015): Steady red robe. Mulberry, simmered red berry aroma with a near garrigue and herbs presence, cut hay. This bounds out with an open, free run red fruit, garden berries, on the palate, comes with sweet spots en route. It isn’t fully fused between nose and palate; it is still quite chalky on the second half of the palate, and ends on graphite, rockiness. Its juiciness is well assured, and it can tidy up the links in the chain with time. I want more on the late palate, but then it is a typical wine of the 2012 vintage. From 2018-19. WA 97 (12/2014): While I loved Michel's 2012 Cote Rotie la Mordoree from barrel, it blew me away from bottle, and I think bares more than a passing resemblance to his 1991. About as elegant and seamless as they come, it exhibits incredible notes of violets, peppery spice, spring flowers, rose petal and darker berry fruit. This is followed by a full-bodied, sweetly fruited, expansive Cote Rotie that's perfectly balanced, has beautiful mid-palate density, and ultra-fine tannin that emerge on the finish. It's a blockbuster effort to drink over the coming two decades.
JLL ***[*] (11/2013): (From cask) Dark colour. Dense bouquet, still under restraint, a rather muscular ensemble, with airs of nuts, black raisin, macerated black fruits - the bouquet has weight. The palate works well: it is nicely packed, also direct, takes on gummy tannins towards the finish. The shape is one of a rectangle more than a sphere, and covers the palate across and along well, sustains via an elegant juice, a coulis style fruit. Good, has lots of potential. It is a bit roasted on the aftertaste. From 2016.
VM 92-94 (3/2014): Inky ruby. Sexy, intensely perfumed aromas of blackberry, cherry-cola and violet, with allspice, cola and olive nuances building with air. Sweet and penetrating in the mouth, showing a seamless texture and vibrant dark berry compote and violet pastille flavors. Finishes with excellent energy and focus, leaving cola and smoky mineral notes behind. |

VM 95-97 (3/2014): Presented as components from four different barrels: #1, from Beaume: Exotic scents of candied licorice, dark berries and smoky Indian spices. Fleshy and broad on entry, then tighter in the middle, displaying superb depth to its bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors. #2, from Peleat: Explosive red fruit and potpourri aromas, with a bright mineral overtone. Silky and sweet, offering vibrant raspberry and cherry compote flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. The red fruit note echoes strongly on the back half. #3, from Meal: Fleshier and rounder than the first two components, offering plush dark berry and violet flavors that coat the palate. Chewy tannins build on the finish and fold smoothly into the wine's dense fruit. #4, from Bessards: Emphatic mineral and dark berry aromas pick up a sexy floral note and a hint of cola. Sappy, penetrating and sharply focused, displaying an impressive array of red fruit and floral qualities and strong finishing spiciness. Jean-Louis Chave told me he thinks this wine will be "classic Hermitage with an emphasis on fruit, not structure, but not lacking in structure at all--just compared to, say, 2010 and 2005."
JLL ****[*] (1/2015): Bottled last week: dark red. Mulberry/raspberry fruit aroma with a nice freedom, a low-key savoury and bacon backdrop, a note of crème de menthe. The palate favours elegance over strength, holds tangy, clear dark fruit, and there is good cut in the tannins. There are pockets of pepper that remind me of 2001. It moves clearly to the finish, where a ball of gras richness awaits. The clarity can expand over time. The fruit is tasty, and the aftertaste has a fruit lozenge, appealing nature combined with spice. It is showing a very good first flush of youth. “It has a supple side to it, no rusticity - it is both fine and supple; I associate it, like you, with 2001, and it is Burgundian in spirit,” Jean-Louis Chave. From 2021 for the second phase.
WA 94-97 (12/2014): Looking at the 2012 Hermitage, which is still resting in barrels and getting ready to be bottled, it’s a much more classic, easy to read Hermitage that has lots of ripe, sweet fruit in its full-bodied, concentrated, textured profile. It has copious sweet blackberry and cassis fruit, violet and serious granite-like minerality, superb mid-palate depth and a focused, structured finish. It’s a beautiful, classy 2012 that will have 20-25+ years of longevity. |

WA 94 (12/2014): The 2012 Cornas Confidence is a smoking Cornas that does everything right! Deep, rich, concentrated and full-bodied, it offers up terrific notes of blackcurrants, black raspberry, smoked earth, licorice and caramelized meats. Nicely structure, with notable, yet sweet tannin, and moderate acidity, give it 2-3 years and drink it through 2027. It’s serious stuff and don’t miss grabbing a couple bottles.
VM 92 (3/2016): Bright purple. Smoky blackberry and blueberry scents on the deeply perfumed nose; olive, peppery spice and floral notes add complexity. Densely packed dark berry preserve flavors pick up candied licorice and cola qualities with aeration, along with hints of licorice and candied flowers. Stains the palate and puts on weight with air, finishing with bright mineral cut, excellent tenacity and mounting tannins. (Drink between 2021-2027). Josh Raynolds. |

WA 94 (12/2016): More layered, rich and sexy than the 2013, the 2012 St Joseph is a beautiful, medium to full-bodied, fabulously textured red that's loaded with notions of ripe red and black fruits, olives, bay leaf and violets. It's approachable today, yet will evolve gracefully through 2030.
VM 93 (2/2015): Glass-staining ruby. Powerful, mineral-tinged aromas of blackberry, incense, dried flowers and smoky minerals. Shows excellent clarity and lift on the palate, offering sweet red and dark berry flavors and a strong note of candied violet. The juicy, precise finish features silky tannins and an echo of candied flowers. As approachable as this wine is now, its balance suggests that it will reward at least another five years of patience. WA 97-99 (12/2015): Another massive, thick and unctuously textured beauty is the 2012 Cote Rotie la Landonne. Always the most structured and tannic of the three single vineyard releases, in this case, the wine’s wealth of fruit and texture almost completely hide its tannic grip and underlying structure. Offering sensational notes of cassis, caramelized meats, spice box and crushed rocks, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, masses of perfectly ripe tannin and a surprisingly sexy, hard to resist profile. Nevertheless, give it 7-8 years in the cellar and enjoy this beauty through 2047.
JLL ***** (12/2015): (From cask, last racked eight months ago) This has an expected dark robe. The nose has a seared, animal, red meat, dark berries aroma - there is a real pit of variety to come. The palate charges forward on lissom, coated black fruit, bright tannins well in step. It is infusing its oak, with juiciness beyond that spreading widely, washing across the palate. It has lots of appeal, is a gourmand, fully fronted glass of wine. It packs its depth in a close-knit manner - not obviously. Both this and the 2011 Landonne are more stylish and more overtly juicy than in the past. From 2020. |

WA 96-98 (12/2015): Possessing slightly more purity (but maybe not the complexity) than the 2011, the 2012 Cote Rotie la Mouline offers a heavenly perfume of cured meats, pecking duck, violets and cassis. This flows to a full-bodied, seamless, absolutely hedonistic Cote Rotie that has good acidity, ripe, polished tannin and a great finish. Of the three single parcel Cote Roties, it’s the most approachable, but will still drink beautifully for three decades or more.

WA 98 (12/2016): Similar to the La Mouline with its forward, incredibly sexy style, the 2012 Côte Rôtie La Turque (there’s 7% Viognier in the blend) offers a saturated purple color to go with meaty, smoky notes of cassis, cured meats, chocolate and roasted herbs. It’s a big mouthful of a wine, with full-bodied richness and a stacked mid-palate, but it has a seamless, weightless texture, perfectly ripe tannin and a blockbuster finish. I’d happily drink a glass today, but it should be at its finest from 2020-2046.
WS 97 (11/2016): Features warm fig bread and ganache notes out front, followed by densely layered blackberry, plum and black currant reduction flavors. Ganache details echo through the finish, along with Turkish coffee and smoldering alder hints. A large-scale wine that should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2020 through 2040. 400 cases made.
JS 97 (10/2016): Made from syrah and 7% viognier, this has an intriguingly assertive yet elegant stance. it's compact, powerful and composed. Very complex, fragrant notes on the nose of orange zest, pepper, cloves and cardamom: It's all really spicy. On the palate, this is elegant and silky with plenty of fine tannin and a structure that's striking for its density. Dark-chocolate flavors are also a prominent feature. This expands vertically on the palate, even if oak ageing has mellowed this nicely all the way up to its creamy finish. A wine of clarity and purity: complex but refined. Drink 2020-2030+.

JD 97 (3/2019): I’ve always loved the 2012 Hermitage La Chapelle, and this is the first vintage where winemaker Caroline Frey feels that you can see the full effect of the shift to organic viticulture. Its deep purple color is followed by a ripe, full-bodied, sexy wine loaded with notions of bouquet garni, toasted bread, spiced meats, and assorted darker fruits. Concentrated, structured, and perfectly balanced, it’s a magical Hermitage that has some accessibility today yet will cruise for another 25-30 years.

Offering up classic black raspberry and sweet dark fruit, Asian spice, toasted bread, licorice and savory herbs, this beauty is full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and has enough tannic grip to demand 4-5 years of bottle age. It will have 3+ decades of longevity.

WA 96 (10/2014): Up in the top handful of wines in the vintage (which should come as no surprise to anyone who follows this estate), the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, rich and layered Châteauneuf that doesn’t put a foot wrong. Made from 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and the rest Syrah, it offers blockbuster notes of blackberry, liquid-violets, spice and serious minerality to go with awesome mid-palate depth and layers of sweet tannin. Like the Cuvee Chaupin, it will be better in another handful of years and thrill through 2027.
WS 96 (10/2014): Tightly coiled for now, this features an intense, vivid core of anise, blackberry coulis, plum paste and macerated fig fruit, with black tea, smoldering tobacco and warm ganache notes. Long and dense, but very silky, with gorgeous violet and pastis details lingering in the background. Should unwind with time. Best from 2017 through 2035. 390 cases imported.
VM 94 (4/2015): Inky ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berry preserves, incense and lavender, with a smoky overtone and bright minerality. Pliant and seamless in the mouth, offering intense, palate-staining cassis and blueberry flavors that are energized by juicy acidity. Shows real power and focus on the strikingly long finish, which features velvety tannins and a hint of candied flowers. There's 15% alcohol here, which is actually quite low for this bottling, and I don't detect any undue heat.
JLL **** (11/2013): Full, dark red; the bouquet is moving openly, gives a lateral air of deep set red cherry, mulberry fruit, also licorice, has an inner strength. The nose is fat, very ensemble. The palate holds agreeable, still tight red cherry liqueur fruit with clear tannins close to it, ends on more mineral features than fat ones. WA 93 (12/2014): Paris’s entry-level cuvee that comes from some of the lower slopes, the inky colored 2012 Cornas Granite 30 is a great bottle of wine that’s been an incredible value in the past couple of vintages. Classic Cornas, yet with a more approachable feel than the other cuvees, it has lots of wild herbs, saddle leather, garrigue, beef blood and currant-like fruit on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, impressively concentrated and ripe, it stays fresh, nicely focused and has enough structure to evolve for upward of a decade.
VM 91 (2/2015): Brilliant ruby. Spicy dark berries and cherry on the perfumed nose and in the mouth. Lithe and mineral-driven, displaying very good clarity and a hint of smokiness on the back half. Finishes bright and nervy, with repeating spiciness and silky, even tannins. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 96 (10/2014): The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape la Combe des Fous is another gorgeous wine from this estate that offers incredible richness while never seeming heavy, cumbersome or over-the-top. A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and the rest Muscardin, Vaccarese and Cinsault, it exhibits thrilling cassis, black raspberry, chocolate, crushed flowers and exotic spice. Full-bodied, seamless and incredibly elegant, it has the polish and balance to drink nicely now, but will evolve for 15 years or more.
WS 96 (10/2014): Dense, offering thickly layered fig, blackberry and black currant fruit, this is still quite primal, with loads of bay, tobacco, ganache and lavender notes waiting in reserve, held in check by loamy grip for now. Serious graphite elements harness the finish. Should be one of the longer-lived wines of the vintage. Best from 2017 through 2035. 50 cases imported.
JLL ****[*] (11/2013): Good dark red; reduction shows on the nose which has a broad, even fat aroma, supple black fruit at its heart. It will become expressive and generous in a large glass around 2018-19. The palate offers a tasty broad berry fruit with a sweet piquancy and appealing garrigue herbs inlay. It ends on fine liqueur fruiting, well. Harmony to come here. Has a loganberry, bonny fruit quality that lasts. Genuine. From 2016.
VM 92-94 (2/2014): Vivid ruby. Blackberry, cherry-cola and spicecake on the intensely perfumed nose, with a sexy floral nuance adding complexity. Youthfully primary cherry and dark berry flavors gain sweetness and flesh with air, picking up a gentle vanilla quality and a touch of smoky Indian spices. Finishes with very good grip and focus and lingering dark berry and spice qualities. |

VM 92-94 (2/2014): (75% grenache, 10% syrah, 10% mourvedre and 5% cinsault): Vivid ruby. Sexy, expansive aromas of raspberry preserves, potpourri and Asian spices show impressive clarity. Sweet, seamless and pure, offering intense red fruit and floral pastille flavors and notes of allspice and anise. The velvety, focused finish shows superb length and harmonious tannins.
WA 91-94 (10/2013): Most likely even better, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape is a classic effort from this estate that could come from nowhere else than the south of France. Garrigue, lavender, pepper, sweet kirsch and blackberry-styled fruits are just some of the notions here and this medium to full-bodied, supple and nicely concentrated 2012 will benefit from short-term cellaring once released. It should have 12-15 years or ultimate longevity. Drink 2016-2027. |

WA 95 (12/2014): Similar in style, yet deeper and richer, the 2012 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes comes from 8-9 different parcels and sees roughly 20 months in 15% new French oak barrels. It’s a blockbuster-styled Cornas that doesn’t pull any punches in its sexy, ripe and textured personality. Black raspberry, cassis, licorice, ground herbs and sweet oak all emerge from this polished 2012, and while it dishes out plenty of pleasure now due to its wealth of fruit, it will have 10-15 years of longevity.
WS 94 (10/2014): Ripe, intense and very pure, offering a gorgeously sleek, polished beam of cassis, plum sauce and raspberry fruit, lined with mouthwatering iron, lavender and rosemary notes. The long finish has serious cut. Best from 2015 through 2030. 250 cases imported.
VM 92-94 (4/2014): (made with 20% whole clusters): Opaque purple. Sexy, complex bouquet of fresh dark berries, incense, potpourri and star anise. Lively, sharply focused and pure, with sappy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors complicated by suave spicecake and floral pastille accents. Supple tannins come on late and add shape to the long, spicy, penetrating finish. |
