| WA 90 (6/2004): Deep ruby/purple-colored with classic aromas of smoke, earth, black cherries, and creme de cassis, this elegant, layered 2001 possesses Outstanding depth and richness as well as impeccable finesse, well-integrated wood, and a long, concentrated finish. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2016. |

VM 91 (6/2004): Moderately saturated ruby-red. Aromas of redcurrant, cedar and tobacco. At once juicy and soft, with currant and tobacco flavors. Offers a silky texture and lovely volume but not quite the structure or grip of the 2002. But this is lush, captivating claret. WA 89 (6/2004): Somewhat light-bodied for a Ducru, with a 1999-like personality, this blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc is a forward, medium-bodied, pretty effort revealing notes of cranberries, black cherries, cassis, and earth. Full of finesse, but lacking concentration as well as depth, it should be consumed over the next 10-12 years. |

WA 95 (6/2004): The 2001 offers a huge spectrum of aromas, including notes of smoke, mocha, chocolate, coffee, and loads of blackberry, cherry, and currant fruit. The superb aromatics are followed by an elegant, medium-bodied, deliciously supple-textured, expansive, fleshy, beautifully pure, well-delineated Pomerol. It is a brilliant effort as well as one of the candidates for the wine of the appellation in 2001. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2014. VM 91 (6/2004): Medium ruby. Compelling aromas of candied currant and cherry, tobacco and roasted nuts. Suave, silky and sappy, with smoky berry and plum flavors framed and intensified by harmonious acidity. Dense, sweet, rich and seductive. Finishes ripely tannic, subtle and long. Delicious, archetypical Pomerol. Stephen Tanzer. |

| WA 94 (6/2004): A brilliant effort (one of the vintage’s most substantial wines), proprietor Denis Durantou has turned in a tour de force in 2001. Sadly, there are only 1,500 cases of this 85% Merlot / 15% Cabernet Franc blend (from vines averaging 40 years of age). This beauty boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as a glorious nose of red and black fruits, flowers, sweet oak, and hints of licorice as well as truffles. Opulent, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, tannic, and persistent on the palate (the finish lasts 40 seconds), give it 2-4 years of cellaring, and drink it between 2007-2020. |

| WA 90 (6/2004): Increasingly one of Bordeaux’s finest second wines, the lush 2001 Forts de Latour exhibits a personality similar to its bigger sibling. Its deep ruby/plum color is accompanied by aromas of smoke, earth, black currants, and notions of walnuts as well as spice box. Round and generous, it should drink well for 10-12 years. |

WA 90 (6/2004): The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2001 Haut-Bailly reveals sweet, pure, elegant aromas of currants, toast, and cigar smoke. With wonderful sweetness, fine tannins, a delicate, nuanced personality, and a long, persistent finish, this well-made, impressive Pessac-Leognan will provide plenty of pleasure over the next 12-14 years. VM 89 (6/2004): Red-ruby. Nose dominated by nutty oak. Supple, sexy and rather full-blown for a young Haut-Bailly, with expressive flavors of currant, tobacco, licorice and spicy, nutty oak. A fairly dense, lush wine whose tannins are rather pronounced today. Ultimately less long than the 2002, though. Sanders describes this wine as "denser than the '99 and more classic than our 2000." |

WA 94 (6/2004): Haut-Brion’s 2001, which was bottled late (the end of September, 2003), possesses an unmistakable nobility as well as a burgeoning complexity. Plum/purple to the rim, this blend of 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc is playing it close to the vest, having closed down considerably after bottling. Nevertheless, it reveals pure notes of sweet and sour cherries, black currants, licorice, smoke, and crushed stones. Medium-bodied with excellent purity, firm tannin, and an angular, structured finish, it requires 5-7 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020+. VM 92+ (6/2004): Full red-ruby, less bright than La Mission. Brooding aromas of raspberry, nuts, menthol and game. Dense, rich, chewy and deep but a bit youthfully closed, showing less personality today than the 2001 La Mission. Larger but not longer. Finishes with building tannins and a minty nuance. |

WA 92 (6/2004): Performing slightly less impressively from bottle than it did from cask, this wine’s Cabernet Franc element has come forward, revealing a distinctive herbal, bell pepper, vegetal character that kept my score from going higher. Nevertheless, there is plenty to like about this 2001 Pomerol. It possesses a saturated ruby/purple color, powerful aromas (kirsch liqueur, raspberries, and blackberries), an earthy, muscular, chunky character, and the most tannic personality of any Pomerol I tasted. While not the huge blockbuster Lafleur can often produce, it is well-built. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. VM 90+ (6/2004): Bright ruby-red. Raspberry, menthol, leather and spices on the slightly sauvage, cool nose. Fat and rich but youthfully tough, even clenched, with idiosyncratic flavors of medicinal black cherry, leather, game and black olive. Not showing the sweet side of the vintage today; in fact, this seems rather backward today, despite its modest acidity. |

WA 95 (6/2004): A brilliant offering, which should be drinkable much earlier than the blockbuster 2000, the 2001 Latour boasts an inky/ruby/purple color to the rim as well as a glorious bouquet of black currants, crushed stones, vanilla, and hints of truffles and oak. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance primarily Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it reveals a sweetness on the palate that is atypical for such a young Latour. The beautiful integration of tannin, acidity, and wood is stunning. The wine flows across the palate with fabulous texture, purity, and presence. This luscious, full-bodied Latour was surprisingly open-knit on the three occasions I tasted it from bottle. However, do not mistake its aging ability as this 2001, despite its precociousness, will last 20-25 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025. VM 92+ (6/2004): Deep red-ruby. Enticing aromas of roasted plum, currant, graphite and smoky oak. Precise, spicy and juicy; more herbal than the 2002 or 2003 but also very intensely flavored and not at all hard. This very long, pure Latour seems to be shutting down today. |

| WA 93 (6/2004): Jean-Hubert Delon thinks the 2001 Leoville Las Cases could turn out to be as good as his 2000. I’m not sure I agree, but it may come close. A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.5% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2001 (which represents only 40% of the production) reveals notes of sweet vanillin intermixed with pure cassis, black cherries, and lead pencil shavings. Elegant and medium-bodied, it possesses a saturated purple color, high tannin, and a structured, backward feel in the mouth. This quintessentially elegant Las Cases needs another 5-7 years to hit its plateau of maturity. It will be one of the Medoc’s longest lived wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030. |

| VM 93 (6/2004): Enticing aromas of boysenberry, cedar, espresso and roasted oak. Sweet, lush and broad in the mouth, with sappy berry and espresso flavors. This boasts the pliant texture and near-perfect balance of the vintage's best examples. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins. Like so many 2001s, this is easy to taste today but may well close down in the coming year or so. "The 2001 is a smiley wine," says Pontallier, "while the 2002, though a bit stiff today, has more power and excellent aging potential. But neither ranks among our greatest vintages." |

VM 91+ (6/2004): Good full ruby. High-pitched aromas of blackberry, mint and minerals. Juicy but quite tightly wound today; much more austere than the comparatively pliant Clerc-Milon-not to mention firmer and less fleshy than it appeared from barrel a year ago. Juicy acidity contributes to the impression of structure. Unlike most 2001s, this seems already to have gone into a shell. This penetrating, mostly cabernet sauvignon (86%) Mouton will need at least a decade of bottle aging. WA 89 (6/2004): A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the opaque purple-colored, chunky 2001 Mouton-Rothschild does not possess the finesse and stature often achieved by this first-growth. It offers a tell-tale cassis-scented nose, and a monolithic, medium to full-bodied style with relatively high, austere tannin in the finish (a characteristics I also noticed in cask). A dry, angular, backward effort for the vintage, it should be forgotten for at least a decade. Let’s hope the fruit continues to expand and sweeten, but that’s no sure thing. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025+. |

WA 95 (6/2004): A brilliant dense purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary perfume of camphor, graphite, plums, cassis, and barbecue spices. A prodigious, multilayered, medium-bodied effort with exceptional concentration, a fabulous texture, and a 50-second finish, this brilliant achievement is one of the vintage’s monumental wines. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020+. P.S. Yields were a mere 28 hectoliters per hectare, which no doubt explains the wine’s stunning concentration. VM 90 (6/2004): Red-ruby. Roasted berries, game, tobacco, leather and nuts on the rich, full-blown nose. Suave and harmonious, with warm flavors of tobacco, mocha and hot rocks. Less powerful than the 2002 but already quite inviting. Finishes with ripe tannins and a surprisingly juicy quality. |

WA 96 (6/2004): One of the candidates for wine of the vintage ... again, the 2001 Pavie, from a magnificent south-facing vineyard planted primarily on limestone soil, is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. After a six week maceration, it spent nearly 24 months in new oak prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Some Bordeaux brokers think it might be even better than the 2000 Pavie, but I do not agree. The inky/ruby/purple-colored 2001 exhibits a tight but promising nose of crushed stones, a liqueur of blackberries, cherries, and black currants, and subtle smoke and licorice in the background. Powerful, with impressive elegance, fine harmony among its elements, a multi-layered texture, it has a finish that lasts for 50+ seconds. There is considerable tannin, but it is well-integrated. Give it 3-4 years, and drink it over the next two decades. A profound effort for the vintage, it is an example of a perfectionist proprietor pushing the envelope of quality. VM 92 (6/2004): Saturated ruby-red color. Knockout nose combines perfumed red berries, licorice, tar and chalky minerality, along with some exotic roasted notes. Sweet, fat and thick, with slightly roasted flavors of black raspberry and game. A large-scaled, impressively lush wine that comes off as distinctly more vibrant than the 2001 Pavie-Decesse. From the outset this wine has shown a compelling balance of sugars, alcohol and acids. Very long, mounting finish features firm but ripe tannins and complex notes of raspberry, stone, tobacco and woodsmoke. |

WA 89 (6/2004): This may be the largest vineyard in the Medoc, with nearly 300 acres under vine. There was a period in the nineties where Talbot seemed to be a bit off form, but quality over recent vintages has displayed considerable promise. This estate is capable of producing very special wines, as anyone who has tasted their 1986 or 1982 can easily attest. The 2001, which represents only 50% of the production, is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. A dense saturated ruby/purple color is followed by notes of smoked herbs, licorice, cedar, incense, plums, and black currants. The wine is medium-bodied and moderately tannic for a 2001, with good depth as well as power. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and consume it over the following 12-14 years. VM 87-89 (6/2002): Medium ruby. Sappy black fruit aromas complicated by leather, dark chocolate and menthol. Fresh and primary but quite firm, even a bit austere, in the middle palate. Offers moderate density and finishes with slightly tough tannins. A more classic but also somewhat harder style of wine than the 2000. |

WA 93 (6/2004): A brilliant effort from Alexandre Thienpont, this blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc is a deep purple-colored, fleshy, layered effort offering a sweet nose of creosote, incense, Christmas spices, plenty of red and black fruits, and hints of licorice as well as new oak. Rich, medium to full-bodied, with tremendous purity in addition to nobility, give it two more years of cellaring and drink it over the next following 15-18 years. VM 90+ (6/2004): Saturated ruby-red. Pure but reticent nose hints at plum, raspberry and chocolate. Juicy and sweet but rather closed in the middle palate. Very serious merlot here: this has terrific penetration and structure for a 2001 from the Right Bank. Finishes long and gripping. A very good showing, but this wine really needs seven or eight years of additional cellaring. |

WA 93 (4/2003): This dense, full-bodied, concentrated, lively Haut-Brion Blanc exhibits aromas of honeyed citrus, flowers, smoke, and melon. It should age marvelously for three decades. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030. VM 93 (5/2003): Bright, pale yellow color. Highly complex but subtle aromas of yellow plum, honey and vanilla. Fatter and fuller than the young 2002, with superb thickness of texture but also terrific definition and cut. Big, chewy wine, with an almost saline impression of extract. This really fills the mouth. Very long and gripping on the back. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 93 (4/2004): Wonderfully complex aromas of ripe black fruit, crushed herbs and berries with unmistakable earth aromas. Medium-bodied, powerful, concentrated fresh flavors are structured but not overtly tannic with plenty of underlying material and sappy extract. Despite all the sap, this finishes with a distinct note of velvet and fine, sneaky length. This is an extremely impressive effort and worth a special search. WA (88-91) (4/2003): Mint, spice, earth, and black cherries can be detected in the nose of the 2001 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux. A backward wine, it is dense, intense, thickly-textured, and bruising. Its mammoth structure does not conceal the copious, deep black fruits that make up its core. If time civilizes this mouth-staining effort, it will ultimately merit a score on the high end of the attributed range. |

BH 92 (1/2004): Classic ruby. Highly complex and nuanced black cherry fruit aromas and fresh, damp earth notes lead to medium weight, sappy, refined flavors that display Outstanding precision and superb length. This is ripe, pure and finishes with a very appealing stony quality to complement the Outstanding persistence. There is solid structure and the finish is quite firm and this will require at least a decade to be at its best. Drink 2011-2021. VM 88+ (5/2007): Medium red. Musky redcurrant and dried cherry on the nose, with suggestions of porcini, tobacco and underbrush. A firmly tannic, medium-bodied wine with deep cherry and cherry pit flavors. Is this simply youthful or over-structured? Or both? Finishes a bit dry and dusty, with clenched bitter cherry and dark chocolate tones. |

BH 96 (10/2005): One of the finest wines of the vintage, this is simply a spectacular effort that has captured every bit of the potential it originally displayed in cask. Restrained and backward nose of a fantastically complex mix of blackberries, spice, cedar, soy, anise and dried herbs followed by full-bodied, multi-layered flavors of amazing length. Opulent and lavish yet all remains exquisitely balanced and this is astonishingly precise. A real stunner of a wine that is as classy and graceful as they come. As good and classy as the '02 if not quite as structured. WA 94-96 (6/2003): Sumptuous aromas of violets, blackberries, and bilberries explode from the medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Musigny. A wine of amazing purity and elegance, it reverberates on the palate revealing broad layers of floral dark fruit flavors. Lush yet superbly delineated, this medium-bodied effort is expressive, complex, and dignified. Its prolonged, succulent finish exhibits waves of raspberry fruit and loads of ripe, supple tannin. One of the stars of the vintage, it will be at its peak of maturity between 2006 and 2015. VM 95+ (4/2004): Deep red. Deep, reserved but thoroughly ripe nose hints at blueberry, cherry, blood orange, spices and minerals. Wonderfully sweet and silky but with a firm mineral spine giving shape and grip to the flavors. Extremely precise, classy, young Musigny, finishing with strong, broad, thoroughly ripe tannins and superb sweetness. Millet then told me this wine had been aerated for an hour before we tasted it from a decanter; he opened a new bottle and the second sample was even sweeter, more pliant and longer. The decanted bottle was distinctly closed by comparison. |

WA 96 (2/2004): Beaucastel has been on a terrific qualitative roll over the last four vintages, and the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape (which Francois Perrin feels is similar to the 1990, although I don’t see that as of yet) is a 15,000-case blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the balance split among the other permitted varietals of the appellation. This inky/ruby/purple-colored cuvee offers a classic Beaucastel bouquet of new saddle leather, cigar smoke, roasted herbs, black truffles, underbrush, and blackberry as well as cherry fruit. It is a superb, earthy expression of this Mourvedre-dominated cuvee. Full-bodied and powerful, it will undoubtedly close down over the next several years, not to re-emerge for 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. VM 92+ (2/2004): Bright ruby-red. Liqueur-like raspberry, licorice and a medicinal quality on the nose. Then quite backward in the mouth, with very primary dark berry and black cherry flavors hinting at great ripeness. Quite primary today and less animal than usual for a young Beaucastel. Elegant, slow-building finish features fine-grained tannins and excellent grip. Stephen Tanzer. |

| WA 95 (4/2004): A brilliant effort from 80-year old Tempranillo vines, aged 20 months in new French oak, and bottled without filtration, Fernandez has hit the bull’s eye with the impressively endowed 2001 Neo Punta Esencia. More similar to a Bordeaux first or second-growth than a Spanish Ribera del Duero, it boasts an inky/ruby/purple color as well as a sensational perfume of espresso roast, graphite, black currant liqueur, and pain grille. Full-bodied and youthful, tasting more like a barrel sample than a finished wine, it is loaded with potential and built for the long haul. My instincts suggest cellaring it for 2-3 years, and drinking it over the following 10-15. |

| WA 96+ (7/2022): I had the chance to taste a bottle of the 2001 Viña Tondonia Reserva 10 years after it was released, and the wine has evolved beautifully and quite slowly—at least that is the case for these bottles that have been kept in the winery for all these years. It's austere and elegant, with balance and concentration, polished tannins and a chalky texture, long tasty and dry. This is lively and should continue developing in bottle for quite some time... |

WA 96 (6/2010): The 2001 Gran Reserva 904 will not be released for another 3 years. Dark ruby-colored with a garnet rim, it displays a lovely nose of Asian spices, incense, tobacco, balsamic, and blackberry. On the palate it has exceptional depth, layers of spicy black fruit, excellent ripeness, and an elegant personality. Upon release it should continue to evolve for another 5-6 years and drink well through 2040. VM 93 (10/2013): Deep ruby. Complex, highly perfumed scents of dark berry compote, cherry pit, pipe tobacco and vanilla. Smoky, sweet and focused, offering vibrant black raspberry, bitter cherry and vanilla bean flavors that gain power with air. This doesn't act like a 12-year-old wine! Finishes smooth and very long, with lingering sweetness and gentle, fine-grained tannins. |

WA 96-98 (4/2004): A prodigious effort, the 2001 Tirant is a 9,000-bottle cuvee made from 30% Grenache (90-100 years old), 25% Carignan (90-100 years old), 25% young vine Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, and 10% Merlot. Fermented in large oak foudres and aged 12 months in new French oak, it will be bottled with neither fining nor filtration. Inky/purple-colored to the rim, it boasts a spectacular bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, and the region’s classic crushed stone minerality. This full-throttle yet remarkably elegant 2001 possesses tremendous intensity and texture as well as layers of flavor, but comes across as not over the top, overripe, or overly heavy. The 60-second finish reveals more noticeable tannin than the other cuvees. Give it 1-2 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 10-15. The 2001 Tirant is indeed a special wine. VM 91+ (10/2004): (a similar blend of century-old garnacha and carinena and newer plantings of syrah, merlot and cabernet sauvignon) Deep red. Exotic coconutty oak on the rather port-like nose. At once sweeter and more primary than the Amadis, with a penetrating minerality. Also quite oaky, but has more jammy plum and blackberry fruit to stand up to the wood. Still, it's hard to predict whether this slightly pruney wine will reward more time in bottle. Finishes with sweet tannins and good length. |

WA 87 (12/2006): Altesino is located in a spectacular spot that affords views of Montosoli, the hillside from which the estate makes its most famous Brunello. In past years I have enjoyed this producer’s wines very much, often purchasing them for my own cellar. Unfortunately the estate’s 2001s have proven to be very inconsistent in my multiple tastings of the wines. I can only recommend the Montosoli, with the caveat that my notes refer to Lot # 5343 (indicated on US Importer Leonardo LoCascio’s back label). There are four bottlings of the Brunello and two of the Montosoli, and bottles of both wines purchased in Europe have shown significant variation. Altesino’s 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli (Lot#5343) presents notes of chocolate, toasted oak, earthiness and super-ripe fruit on a full-bodied, ample frame with modest complexity. Underyling notes of mustiness and greenness convey an overall impression of rusticity that is out of character for Altesino, making this Brunello one of the vintage’s few notable underachievers. This was the best of the three bottles of this wine I have tasted so far. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. VM 70 (8/2006): Good deep red. Nutty oak, coffee and pineapple on the nose. Juicy, oaky and tightly wound; dense but cool. Began rather stern but grew sweeter with aeration, finishing with substantial tannins that avoid dryness. A second sample showed aromas of nectarine and coconut and finished leathery and dry. This wine is outside my parameters for Brunello. |

| VM NR (10/2006): Cappellano's 2001 Barolo Pie Franco, made from the Michet clone on ungrafted rootstock, is one of the region's most unique, quirky cult wines, and is a must-have wine for anyone who loves traditionally made Barolo. It displays an extraordinary, captivating nose redolent of balsamic and spice notes. As it sits in the glass layers of finessed, deeply expressive fruit gradually emerge, revealing a massively structured wine of superb length as well as personality, with fine tannins to round out the finish. Sweet balsamic notes develop in the glass, adding considerable depth and nuance. The San Giuseppe is a jewel of a wine with a bright, bright future. Today it is stunningly beautiful. WA 95 (10/2006): My favorite wine has typically been the Ciabot Mentin Ginestra, which comes from vines planted at 400 meters with a south to southeast exposure, which gives the wine its characteristic explosive aromas. The Pajana comes from a vineyard at 300 meters in altitude, with a due south exposure, and as would be expected, it is less perfumed on the nose, but rounder and lusher on the palate. Clerico’s Percristina is produced from old vines planted in the south-facing Mosconi cru. Stylistically I find it more similar to the Pajana, though the older vines give this wine a more concentrated profile along with heady, exotic aromas and flavors. The richly-colored 2001 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra opens with an unmistakable Ginestra nose of menthol, eucalyptus, spices and minerals. It is dense and structured, showing plenty of ripe dark cherry fruit, licorice, tar and toasted oak flavors, with exceptional length and substance on the palate, and closing with an inviting, beautiful, lingering finish that makes you want to come back to the wine time and again. Clerico’s Ciabot Mentin Ginestra was one of the first Barolos that really captivated my attention and for me it remains this producer’s most representative wine. It is a superb achievement and one of the highlights of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. VM 94 (12/2004): Good medium red. Exotic, exhilarating aromas of sappy red berry liqueur and woodsmoke. Wonderfully sweet on entry, then superripe and liqueur-like in the middle palate, with an utterly suave texture over firm supporting spine. Finishes impressively long and sweet, with serious but noble tannins. There's nothing especially austere or forbidding about this extremely rich Barolo. |

VM 95 (12/2004): Medium red. Quintessential Barolo perfume: minerals, tobacco, underbrush, tar, licorice, gunflint. Then wonderfully rich and seamless in the mouth, with superb concentration and purity of flavor. Spicy red fruits emerged with aeration. Comes across, atypically, as less clenched in the early going than the Colonnello and strikingly complex from the outset, but this is nonetheless extremely young. Finishes with extremely suave tannins and vibrant lingering fruit. Great wine in the making. WA 92 (10/2006): A dark-toned hue of ruby with violet highlights, the 2001 Barolo Cicala suggests new oak and spices on the nose, then opens to reveal a very complete and multi-dimensional wine that offers sensations of ripe dark cherries, minerals, menthol, tar, licorice and violets wrapped around a structured, masculine frame. A very fresh and long finish makes this a superbly well-balanced and beautiful wine. The Cicala cru gives wines of power and intensity owing to its poorer and dryer soils which contain more iron, as well as the vineyard’s south to south-east exposure. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. |

WA 99 (10/2008): The 2001 Barolo Riserva Monfortino flows from the glass with stunning depth and purity. This seamless, elegant Barolo caresses the palate with incredible persistence as layers of aromas and flavors develop in the glass. Stylistically it is very much like the 2001 Cascina Francia, only with more intensity, depth and sheer volume. Monfortino has always had power to spare, but in 2001 it is also incredibly elegant, something that previous vintages have only acquired with significant bottle age. This is a towering, majestic Monfortino that will rightfully take its place among the very finest Monfortinos ever made. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2041. VM 94-96 (12/2007): (still in barrel) Good medium red with amber highlights. The nose offers incredible early perfume of strawberry, truffle and rose petal. Then deep, creamy and complex on the palate; one chews this liquid! Incredibly youthful wine with Outstanding concentration, sweetness and sap. The strawberry and truffle flavors are complicated by a meaty nuance. Shows much more cut than the 2000. Finishes with Outstanding building length. |

WA 92 (10/2006): The cask-aged 2001 Barbaresco Rabaja is very spiced on the nose, with a balsamic character that gradually reveals itself as the wine sits in the glass. Though somewhat shut down today, it displays plenty of dark fruit and Outstanding structure, with a gorgeous note of menthol on the fresh finish. It will require at least a few years of bottle aging prior to offering its best drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016. VM 86 (12/2004): Good full medium red. Raspberry, mocha, mushroom and sweet nutty oak on the nose. Juicy and moderately concentrated, with a restrained sweetness. Some nut skin notes (from old oak?) make this a bit dull for the vintage. Finishes a tad dry. |

| WA 93 (4/2004): It’s hard to avoid slipping into automotive metaphors when talking about the 2001 Campoleone, made at the Lamborghini family estate near Lake Trasimeno - sleek lines, power to spare, super acceleration from start to finish, a shift into overdrive on the finish. Suffice it to say that this is Umbria’s prototypical Sangiovese/Merlot blend, an intense dark ruby with a potent, spicy, red currant, raspberry, and plum nose, a sumptuous texture with superior volume, velvet, and sweetness, and exceptional length, grip, and sensuality on the close. Better this 2001 or the equally formidable 1999? Let’s just say that it’s likely to be a photo-finish, and either could take the checkered flag. Drink: 2005-2020. |

I love this. VM 96 (6/2007): Medium-deep bright ruby. Beautiful, profound nose of sweet ripe cherry, pipe tobacco, almond and raspberry jam. Ripe, suave and juicy, with sweet flavors similar to the aromas, this is an absolutely seamless wine with lively harmonious acidity on a suave, never-ending finish. Though extremely concentrated, this is a uniquely refined Brunello with wonderfully suave smooth, classy tannins. WA 92 (4/2006): The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is Neri’s modern-styled Brunello. It is made from vines planted in the southern part of the zone and aged in small oak barrels. It displays a darker, almost saturated color and notable concentration with masses of sweet dark fruit, smoke and licorice flavors that flow onto the palate with exceptional length and balance in a powerful, brooding style. WA 92 (4/2012): The 2001 Barolo Bussia is very, very pretty. VM 92-94 (11/2004): Good deep red. Highly complex nose combines currant, tobacco, rose petal, spices, marzipan and underbrush, as well as strong minerality. Sweet, highly perfumed flavors of dark berries, rose petal and graphite. Fat and lush but with excellent flavor definition, thanks to solid, harmonious acidity (5.7 grams per liter, not far behind the 5.9 in the 1999). Very classy Barolo, finishing with suave, horizontal tannins. This needs an early bottling, and indeed Torrengo told me he would bottle it in November, "for the nose." This wine comes from three hectares of 30-year-old vines; Prunotto also owns ten- and four-year-old vines in Bussia, but this juice does not yet go into the cru bottling. |

| VM 96 (4/2012): Luciano Sandrone's 2001 Barolo Le Vigne is fresh, vibrant and totally impeccable. Flowers, mint, minerals and juicy red berries are some of the many nuances that come to life in the 2001 Le Vigne. The wine gains volume and shape with time in the glass. Seemingly endless layers of fruit flesh out on the mid-palate and finish. Hints of leather, spices, licorice and flowers add further complexity on the close. This is a fabulous showing from Luciano Sandrone. Although Sandrone's Cannubi Boschis gets most of the attention, the reality is that in many vintages Le Vigne is very much its equal. The ability to blend fruit from several parcels, an approach rarely used today, has plenty of merits. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 90+ (11/2003): Good full red. Currant, black cherry, licorice, meat, graphite and smoky oak on the nose. Sappy on entry, then tight and minerally in the middle, with the wine's acids and oak currently keeping the fruit under wraps. Densely packed but a bit youthfully awkward today. The firm, persistent finish offers a suggestion of green tea. Stephen Tanzer. WA 90 (8/2004): Sweet red currant liqueur, cassis, and copious spices make up the nose of the outstanding 2001 Clos de Betz. A suave, densely packed, medium to full-bodied wine, it reveals an intense character of red cherries, blackberries, black currants, and notes of brambleberries. A hint of alcohol was detected in the finish. Anticipated maturity: now-2011. |

WA 92 (8/2004): Smoky oak, freshly laid road tar, and a myriad of dark fruits are found in the nose of the dark-colored 2001 Pere de Famille. A medium to full-bodied wine of wonderful intensity, purity, and great length, it displays a satin-textured core of ripe blackberries, cassis liqueur, and spices. Drink this beauty between 2006 and 2018. VM 91+ (12/2003): (includes 16% cabernet franc and 14% merlot) Medium red-ruby. Very cabernet on the nose, with currant, graphite, fresh herbs and pepper showing, along with a suggestion of white chocolate. Dense and powerful, with flavors of dark berries, minerals, licorice and herbs. Serious, firmly tannic wine that's not at all overly sweet. Like the Clos de Betz, this was bottled in May and will almost certainly merit a higher score as it harmonizes in bottle. (The fruit component here is even stronger than that of the very suave 2000 bottling.) |

| WA 96 (6/2011): Caymus has been around for so long there is a tendency to under-estimate their wines. However, they have a brilliant track record as evidenced by the decade old 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage Selection. Abundant chocolaty, black currant, licorice and coffee aromas soar from the glass of this perfumed wine. It exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color, wonderful opulence, a deep, full-bodied mouthfeel, fabulous depth and not a hard edge to be found. While seemingly fully mature, the supple tannins, expansive fruit and glycerin, depth and overall balance suggest it will keep for another 15+ years. |

| WA 94 (5/2011): The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Bosche (from that iconic site on the west side of Rutherford planted in gravelly, loamy soils) is composed of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a classic nose of loamy soil, kirsch liqueur, Provencal garrigue, black currants and spice box. Full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and fully mature with fabulous balance, it is hard to ignore this stunning 2001. The good news is that there were 2,400+ cases made of it from this 22-acre site. It is capable of lasting another 15-20 years. |

| WA 88 (12/2006): The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is the tightest of this quartet as well as the most structured. It appears to be in a middle-aged state that is no longer primary, but the secondary aromas have not yet emerged. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by hints of new saddle leather, cassis, and spice. Medium to full-bodied, but not as impressive as its siblings, it should be consumed over the next decade. |

| WA 89 (12/2003): A second wine produced from juice culled from Les Pavots lots is called L’Esprit des Pavots. There are 875 cases of the 2001, a blend of 47% Cabernet Franc, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Merlot. It is no wimpish wine at 15.6% alcohol, but that is not even noticeable in this dark ruby/purple-colored offering. A big bouquet of cocoa, espresso roast, vanilla, chocolate, and ripe black currants as well as cherries is followed by a medium-bodied, supple-textured red that is best consumed over the next 7-8 years. |

| WA 78 (6/2011): This surprisingly light-bodied, pleasant, one-dimensional 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals some dried fruit characteristics, has begun to desiccate and lose whatever vibrancy it once possessed. Since this is the only time I have tasted the wine, it is difficult to know what it was like seven or eight years ago. However, it has no future. |

WA 92 (10/2003): A big, ripe, Amarone-like bouquet emerges from the dark ruby/purple-colored 2001 Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard. Full-bodied, rich, and chewy, with loads of briery black cherry, raspberry, and currant fruit, it remains the reference point for what Zinfandel can achieve in Contra Costa. A sweet spot in the mid-palate (because of the high glycerin) results in a hypothetical blend of California Zinfandel and Italian Amarone. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years. VM 92 (6/2003): Bright ruby. Superripe aroma of maraschino cherry liqueur, with exotic hints of peach and apricot. A large-scaled, lush fruit bomb with dense, creamy fruit and noteworthy depth of flavor. Has the sheer guts to buffer its substantial tannic spine. Reminded me of the 2000 version. |

| WA 96 (12/2003): I was thrilled by the awesome quality of the 2001 La Joie, a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc. Aromas and flavors of roasted espresso, grilled herbs, scorched earth, blackberries, and cassis liqueur are accompanied by an unctuously-textured, full-bodied, expansive, dense, phenomenally concentrated, pure blockbuster. It should be at its finest between 2005-2020+. This is an out and out brilliant wine! |

VM 89+ (8/2003): Medium red-ruby. Expressive nose melds raspberry, currant, smoked meat, truffle and espresso, with a very ripe smoky element. Sweet but quite firm in the mouth; the bright berry fruit seems a bit youthfully hard, owing to the wines strong spine of acidity. Juicy finish shows firm but fine tannins. WA 88 (8/2003): The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Brookmans Vineyard is a dense, chewy, full-bodied effort revealing plenty of cassis, a multi-layered texture, and moderately high tannin in the finish. Patience will be required as this seems to be a slightly leaner version of Cabernet Sauvignon than the other examples. |

| WA 93 (8/2003): The 2001 Syrah Moritz Vineyard comes across as a more elegant version of the 2002. It is profoundly concentrated with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, creosote, earth, and background oak. Although fabulously rich and long, it appears a bit undersized next to the 2002. The large-framed 2001 will hit its peak by 2007, and last until 2020. |

| |
| WA 90 (8/2003): The exceptional 2001 Shiraz Old Vine (from 110- and 40-year old vines) was aged 24 months in French and American oak, and bottled unfiltered. A saturated ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of creosote, blueberries, blackberries, melted licorice, and a hint of espresso. Sweet and full-bodied, with copious fruit as well as style and grace, it is tempting to say these wines are too big and rich, but they are controlled, with surprisingly fine definition. This 2001 should drink well for 10-15 years. |

|
| |
| WA 93 (8/2003): Even better than the Old Vine, is the 2001 Shiraz The Bogan, produced from a 40-year old vineyard situated near the Greenock Creek Winery. Aged in 100% new American oak for 20 months prior to being bottled unfiltered, this is a hedonistic, full throttle, pedal to the metal, top-class Australian Shiraz. Sweet vanilla and caramel notes intermingled with smoky black currant and blackberry fruit jump from the glass of this hedonistic, opulent, voluptuously-styled Shiraz. With decent acidity, ripe tannin, and a layered, blockbuster finish, this stunning effort will drink well for 10-12 years. |
