| WA 93 (4/2025): The Girolamo Russo 2023 Etna Bianco San Lorenzo is 90% Carricante with 10% Minnella that is aged in tonneaux for one year. The wine opens to a medium golden color and shows an open-knit character with apricot, honey and saffron. The vines used to make this wine range from 20 to 80 years in age. I recommend a near-term drinking window for this wine that tends to show a slightly more oxidative and waxy character compared to the other white wines in this portfolio. |

| VM 92 (10/2025): The 2023 Barbera d'Alba Superiore Pairolero is a classy, elegant wine, just as it was when I tasted it last year. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, cloves, licorice and mocha all meld together. Faced with a very warm year, Sottimano left more leaves and more crop on the vine with the goal of extending phenolic ripeness. It worked. The 2023 is a gorgeous wine that captures the essence of the house style. |

| VM 93 (10/2025): The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo, all young vines from Basarin, is terrific. Pliant and expressive, the 2023 is a superb choice for readers looking for a wine that overdelivers. Macerated cherry, plum, lavender and blood orange open first. Exotic floral and spice overtones develop with a bit of time in the glass. More than anything else, I am so impressed with the wine's textural depth and balance. The 2023 was done a modified, light style of submerged cap maceration for about a week that worked wonders. Élevage was nine months in cask. And the young vines are now nearly 30 years old! Antonio Galloni. |

Mate Brachetto ex-Domaine |

WA 91 (1/2025): Made entirely with the Brachetto grape, the 2023 Maté is one of my favorite wines in the Sottimano portfolio. "Simpatico" is the best word to describe it. Brochette has thick skins, low pH and low alcohol. It ferments for three weeks to reveal a fragrant bouquet with strawberry, spiced apple and blueberry. Like Freisa and Pelaverga, Brachetto is especially sensitive to disease and mildew pressure, and that explains why remaining acreage is small. Grignolino, Dolcetto and Barbera were traditionally the moneymakers of this region, especially in the 1970s. It's really nice to see an estate dedicate so much attention to this beautiful little grape. Andrea Sottimano works with whole berry fermentation, limited pump-overs and a few punch-downs because he does not want too much extraction. The purpose is to delicately break the cap. Production is 8,000 bottles. VM 90 (10/2024): The 2023 Matè is a gorgeous, crystalline wine. Crushed rose petals, mint, white pepper, star anise and orange peel all grace this exquisite, chiseled red. As usual, strong savory and floral notes are front and center. (Drink between 2024-2030). Antonio Galloni. |
