WA 95+ (6/2012): The 2008 I Sodi di San Niccolo is especially dark, powerful and brooding in this vintage. Black fruit, smoke, tar and incense are some of the many notes that flow from a structured, tense frame. The 2008 will test the readers’ patience, but it has the stuffing and pedigree to develop into a splendid wine. This is a fabulous showing, especially within the context of the vintage. Today, the 2008 looks to be a great wine in the making. I Sodi di San Niccolo is 85% Sangioveto and 15% Malvasia Nera aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028. JS 94 (8/2012): Wonderful silky texture to this red with a beautiful currant and berry character as well. Full body, with caressing mouthfeel. A blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Malvasia Nera. Better after 2013. VM 90+ (7/2012): Surprisingly deep ruby-red color. Blueberry, dark plum, coffee and tobacco on the nose, with pepper and vanilla nuances emerging with aeration. Moderately dense and sweet, showing modest fat but good intensity to its aromatic herb and blueberry flavor. A tad undifferentiated today, with the herb and pepper elements carrying through to the firm finish. Will this blossom in bottle? Certainly this is a very good wine for the leanish 2008 vintage; the malvasia nera seems to be front and center this year. WS 90 (9/2012): Plum, cherry and chocolate flavors mesh with the rich texture in this red, with bright acidity and dusty tannins keeping it fresh and focused. Fine length. Sangioveto and Malvasia Nero. Best from 2014 through 2024. 2,000 cases made. |

WA 96 (10/2017): The 2013 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is 85% Sangioveto (a more antique name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from a single vineyard. This wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance and shows ruby, garnet and purple highlights. The bouquet is powerful but seamless at the same time with smooth transitions between dark cherry, spice, tobacco and moist clay. In the mouth, this wine shows dense extraction, but it never feels too weighed down by that mass. Instead, the freshness of the fruit and the natural acidity give the wine a bright and buoyant personality. Aged in barrique for 30 months, this is a delightful Tuscan red. VM 95+ (1/2018): The flagship 2013 I Sodi di San Niccolò is classy and polished to the core. In many vintages, the I Sodi di San Niccolò can be more overt and extroverted, but in 2003 it is a wine of cool sophistication and polish. A rush of dark red and purplish-hued stone fruits, wild flowers, mint and licorice rounds out things out. The 2013 is a stylish, captivating Sodi. All it needs is time in bottle. For my money, Sodi remains one of the world's most pedigreed under-the-radar wines. JS 95 (8/2017): This is really serious with dense and deep fruit, citrusy acidity and a fantastic mouthfeel. Medium to full body, linear and racy. Made from a blend of sangioveto and malvasia nera. Drink now. |

VM 98 (8/2019): The 2015 I Sodi di San Niccolò is just stratospheric. That's pretty much all there is to it. Plush, deep and explosive, the 2015 possesses magnificent depth. The 15% Malvasia Nera gives tannic backbone and energy to balance the wine's natural richness. Sweet red cherry, cedar, smoke, tobacco and licorice build in a racy, flamboyant Sodi that hits all the right notes. In a word: stunning! (Drink between 2023-2040). Antonio Galloni. WA 95 (9/2019): The 2015 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is another beautiful new release from Castellare di Castellina. This is a seamlessly executed expression of Sangioveto (an antique name for Sangiovese) with a smaller part Malvasia Nera from a sunny vintage that produced generous and exuberant fruit across the board. White pepper, spice, wild rose and toasted anise seed appear on the close. The finish is soft and yielding with sweet tannins. Present this gorgeous red alongside a roasted pheasant. |

| VM 98 (9/2020): Castellare's I Sodi di San Niccolò is the single most overlooked high-end wine in Tuscany today. The 2016 picks up where the 2015 left off. A rush of inky dark fruit, lavender, spice, licorice, gravel, blueberry and menthol builds as the 2016 shows off its exceptional balance and pedigree. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2016 needs a few years in bottle to fully come together. Even so, the 2016 has been nothing less than spectacular on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. In a word: monumental. (Drink between 2026-2041.) |

| VM 95 (8/2023): The 2019 I Sodi di San Niccolò is another fabulous wine from Castellare. At this stage, the 2019 is an infant. The purity of the fruit is compelling. Despite its considerable intensity, the 2019 appears to have less forbidding tannins than in many years, which should allow it to drink well with minimal cellaring. Blood orange, sweet spice, leather and cedar linger on the stylish finish. Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 95 (7/2012): Good bright red. Complex, knockout nose offers red cherry, redcurrant, licorice, cinnamon and camphor. An essence of sangiovese in the mouth, with suave, penetratingly pure red cherry, red berry and mineral flavors conveying an impression of energy and precision. Very intensely flavored and seamless wine with sneaky concentration and wonderful balance. I suspect this will develop more density and flesh with another year of bottle age. Finishes with firm, high-quality tannins, harmionious acidity, piercing minerality, and lovely lingering perfume. This may well be the best young Il Poggiale ever. It's a wine of mindblowing purity and precision, magically combining perfume, refinement and purityof flavor. Ian D'Agata. |
