BH 93 (4/2004): Wonderfully complex aromas of ripe black fruit, crushed herbs and berries with unmistakable earth aromas. Medium-bodied, powerful, concentrated fresh flavors are structured but not overtly tannic with plenty of underlying material and sappy extract. Despite all the sap, this finishes with a distinct note of velvet and fine, sneaky length. This is an extremely impressive effort and worth a special search. WA (88-91) (4/2003): Mint, spice, earth, and black cherries can be detected in the nose of the 2001 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux. A backward wine, it is dense, intense, thickly-textured, and bruising. Its mammoth structure does not conceal the copious, deep black fruits that make up its core. If time civilizes this mouth-staining effort, it will ultimately merit a score on the high end of the attributed range. |

VM 91+ (3/2004): Medium red. Spicy, carnal aromas of strawberry and underbrush. Sweet, rich and concentrated, with a sappy impression of extract. Offers a silky texture and lovely clarity of flavor, with pungent spice and underbrush notes throughout. Finishes firmly tannic, youthful and long. Stephen Tanzer. BH 90 (5/2003): Understated and pure pinot and earth aromas framed by restrained new oak notes. There is first rate complexity if not much density to the medium weight flavors and this is more an exercise in finesse and elegance than the full-on, rich, opulent style of the Suchots. This displays fine length and solid finishing intensity. |

| BH 89 (1/2004): This already displays fascinating aromatic complexity with classy, refined, utterly pure, harmonious flavors and fine, vibrant length. There is plenty of potential here as the tannic structure is prominent and despite the expressiveness of the nose, this is quite backwards and will require some patience. Drink 2009-2017. |

VM 92 (4/2017): Medium red. Aromas of plum and truffle are joined by musky wild notes and a balsamic quality on the rather soft nose. Supple and savory right now, with brown spice and earth notes dominating the middle palate. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and noteworthy length and grip. Not a particularly fruity style but has energy. Nicolas Groffier ventured the opinion that this vintage "has stabilized since 2005" and wondered out loud whether the wine's touch of sweetness, which he said was not apparent earlier, comes from its alcohol. Stephen Tanzer. BH 89 (1/2004): The expressive nose this displayed from cask has been replaced by a reserved, brooding, backward one though it displays understated and fresh red and black fruit aromas framed by obvious toast notes and followed by harmonious, sappy, full-bodied, powerful flavors that are not especially precise but extremely long. The overall impression is a bit too supple to be a classic Bonnes Mares but it's very pretty all the same. Drink 2007-2013. |

VM 92 (3/2004): Good deep red. Expressive, superripe aromas of briary currant and blueberry, menthol and mocha. Wonderfully sweet and aromatic in the mouth, with highly concentrated, nearly candied flavors of blackberry pie and framboise Shows a surmuri aspect that reminded me of grenache, but a firm spine of acidity gives the wine freshness and grip. Still a bit youthfully unforthcoming and in need of three to five years of aging. A powerful, extraordinarily ripe 2001 that finishes with big, tongue-dusting tannins and explosive length. Stephen Tanzer. BH 90 (1/2004): Sexy, complex and perfumed aromas merge seamlessly with round, plump, sappy, medium weight flavors underpinned by ripe structure and subtle acidity. There is lovely balance here and this is extremely stylish with another dimension of complexity and overall finesse plus a velvety finish. Drink 2007-2013. |

| BH 94 (1/2004): As was the cask sample, this displays backward, fiercely intense and very tight black fruit aromas framed by earth, spice and an extremely subtle complexity lead to round, big if not massive, velvety, stunningly long flavors that exude breed and unmistakable class. Despite the understated nose, this is one very seductive wine and it should be capable of delivering a serious drinking experience over the next two decades. Drink 2011-20. |

| BH 87 (1/2004): A combination of oak and Vosne spice notes introduce rich, velvety and beautifully textured flavors and a sexy, velvety finish. If this can add a bit more complexity on the backend, my score may be conservative and I do like the fine persistence. |

| BH 87 (1/2004): Quite deeply colored with slightly less obvious oak influence with similar reserved, understated, bigger and more powerful flavors plus a sappy, linear, precise finish. There is also more structure here but it's buried by the sap though I again doubt that this will ever fully integrate the wood. In short, this is delicious but woody. Drink 2007-2013. |

VM 89 (5/2019): The 2001 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas has a simple, fruit-driven bouquet with rounded red cherry and strawberry fruit, damp earth, pressed flower and rooibos scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, pleasing tart red fruit laced with orange zest. There is nothing complex here and there is no question that it is missing some vigor. Yet there is a light-heartedness, about this Clos des Réas, a sense of nonchalance here that is endearing. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting. (Drink between 2018-2028). Neal Martin. WA 88 (2/2018): The 2001 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas is drinking well, opening in the glass with an attractive nose of dried red fruits, plums, pencil shavings and a framing of nutty new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied and quite ample, its sweet core underpinned by chewy but ripe tannins. I suspect this was quite flamboyant in its youth, but it's becoming calmer and more respectable as it matures. |

| BH 94 (1/2003): As I'm fond of pointing out, no other producer in Burgundy serves their Clos de Vougeot after their Richebourg and while the 2000 was perhaps the finest I have ever tried chez Leroy, the 2001 may very well be just as good. Much less auster |

| BH 95 (1/2003): Strikingly distinctive nose of game, rich black, earthy fruits and roasted coffee notes as well as something slightly animale plus lusty, full-bodied, intense, velvety flavors that display incredible presence. This is alive and vibrant and just screams breed and class. Much like the Combottes in that it is so intense as to seemingly result in permanent sensory overload. In short, this is a real stunner of a wine and possessed of an incredibly powerful finish. Wow! Drink 2015-2025. Don't miss! |

| BH 93 (1/2004): This is much like the '02 in style with a sterner and less elegant character but a good deal more power and the same masculine quality. Earthy, robust and slightly austere minerality and a mix of red and black fruit aromas introduce precise and brilliantly intense flavors that deliver Outstanding length and simply incredible complexity. I rarely prefer big over fine but the additional complexity and depth of material make this a better wine and this is just flat out wonderful. Drink 2011-2021. |

BH 92 (1/2004): Classic ruby. Highly complex and nuanced black cherry fruit aromas and fresh, damp earth notes lead to medium weight, sappy, refined flavors that display Outstanding precision and superb length. This is ripe, pure and finishes with a very appealing stony quality to complement the Outstanding persistence. There is solid structure and the finish is quite firm and this will require at least a decade to be at its best. Drink 2011-2021. VM 88+ (5/2007): Medium red. Musky redcurrant and dried cherry on the nose, with suggestions of porcini, tobacco and underbrush. A firmly tannic, medium-bodied wine with deep cherry and cherry pit flavors. Is this simply youthful or over-structured? Or both? Finishes a bit dry and dusty, with clenched bitter cherry and dark chocolate tones. |

| VM 89+ (3/2004): Medium red. Deep, ripe aromas of redcurrant, smoke and earth. Fat, sweet and sexy, with flavors of plum, earth, smoke and Oriental spices. Nicely supple, broad wine with very good persistence. Rouget says this is closing down today. I’d wait five years or so. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 93 (10/2005): Big, strapping, explosive aromas of black fruit, earth and notes of blueberries all trimmed in a touch of wood toast lead to sappy, full-bodied, rich, wonderfully intense, powerfully structured flavors that go on and on. Exceptionally dense for the vintage with dusty structure and superb balance which should permit it to age for years. Consistent notes. Drink 2010+. VM 93 (4/2004): Saturated ruby-tinged red. Complex aromas of black fruits, mocha and underbrush. Sweet, dense and sappy, with a deep core of spicy fruit. Seems less closed today than most of Roumier's other 2001s owing to its absence of hard edges. But this very serious, thick wine really needs five or six years of bottle aging and should last well. Finishes with terrific persistence. WA 89-91 (6/2003): The medium-bodied, medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Bonnes Mares is an Outstanding wine. It explodes from the glass with candied black fruit aromas and slathers the palate with its deep, suave, violet-laced jammy blackberries. Armed with first-rate depth of fruit, this friendly, silky-textured offering displays a long finish packed with ripe tannin enveloped in black cherries. Projected maturity: now-2010. |
