WA 93 (12/2023): Based on the 2019 vintage, but with a preponderance of reserve wines from 2018, Agrapart's NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Terroirs delivers notes of citrus oil, white flowers, freshly baked bread and hazelnuts, followed by a medium to full-bodied, creamy and satiny palate that's bright, lively and chalky. Wines from Oger dominate the blend.

VM 92 (5/2023): The NV (2019) Brut Cuvée Ste.-Anne is fabulous. Rich, ample and layered, the Brut Cuvée Ste.-Anne hits all the right notes. I especially admire its vinous intensity and overall resonance. Dried pear, flowers mint, white pepper and lemon confit are some of the many notes that grace this exquisite Champagne from Alexandre Chartogne. It's great to see this bottling - one of my perennial favorites - bounce back from a lackluster showing last year. Best of all, Cuvée Ste.-Anne remains an exceptional value in the world of fine grower Champagne. This release is based on 2019. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Disgorged: June 2022. Antonio Galloni.

VM 90 (12/2006): (this spent 61 months on its lees and was disgorged in August, 2006) Medium gold. Rich, smoky, deep aromas of leesy apple, apricot pit, pomegranate and rhubarbs. A chewy, substantial, medium-bodied wine with a distinctly toasty cast to its flavors of ripe pit fruits, toffee, fresh porcini and truffle. Serve this big, dense Champagne (I'm more tempted to call it a wine) with hearty, richly sauced dishes or the strongest cheeses. Not for those who prefer a racy style, but fans of the type will love it.

VM 93 (12/2001): Perfumed aromas of rose petal, violet, mango and pineapple. Intensely flavored and penetrating; as vibrant and focused as this is, it's also wonderfully creamy in the middle palate, with a complete absence of rough edges. Compelling flavors of exotic fruits, toast and spices, plus a hint of caramelized banana. Very long and concentrated on the back end. An Outstanding, utterly harmonious blend.

VM 90 (12/2019): The NV (2016) Brut Blanc de Blancs Delos Grand Cru is the same wine as the Extra Brut, but with dosage of 7 grams per liter. Pear, brioche, spice and orchard fruit overtones all race out of the glass. The higher dosage gives the Brut a bit more immediacy, but also results in the impression of some loss of persistence through the mid-palate and into the finish. Even so, the Delos offers plenty of appeal. Dosage: 7 gr/L. Antonio Galloni.

WA 90 (12/2008): The NV Rose Premiere Cuvee is a delicious, mineral-laced, perfumed Rose that reveals notable elegance and personality. This deceptively medium-bodied wine will show at its best at the dinner table, as it is a serious, structured wine that can stand up to all but the most robust foods. This is another new bottling from Paillard, introduced just this year, and this is the February, 2008 disgorgement. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010.

WA 96 (12/2009): The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Substance is 100% Chardonnay from Avize made Solera-style, with vintages dating back to 1987. The December 4, 2008 disgorgement is a rich, liqueur-like wine endowed with layers of roasted nuts, honey, licorice, dried apricots, tobacco and spices. As is often the case, the Substance presents a fascinating combination of the old and the new. The aromas and flavors are that of a wine with age, but the mousse is impeccably fresh. This is a fascinating, contemplative Champagne, and while it can be a difficult wine to grasp, Substance is also incredibly rewarding. Disgorged: December 4, 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2014. VM 94 (11/2008): Copper-hued gold. Brooding pear, rose and blond tobacco aromas gain freshness with air, taking a turn to white flowers and dusty minerals. Firm, tightly wound orchard and pit fruit flavors are sweetened by brown butter and candied licorice. The floral notes repeat emphatically on the finish, which simply refuses to let up. This wine is completely from Avize and the blend (Selosse referred to it as a solera) was started with the 1986 vintage. |

WA 94 (12/2008): The NV Brut Blanc de Blanc Initiale sparkles on the palate with soft, creamy textured fruit framed by silky tannins and notes of salinity on the finish. The wine reveals an expansive, mysterious personality with a level of depth to the fruit that renders the mousse extremely delicate. This is great Chardonnay first, and a profound Champagne second, but made in a slightly richer style than the Originale. Whereas the Initiale is made from the steeper parcels, the Initiale is made from plots on the lower slopes of vineyards in Avize, Cramant and Oger, where a component of clay is more prominent. This year the wine is a blend of equal parts 2003, 2002 and 2001. 2003 is a small harvest of rich, concentrated juice, which contributes to this wine’s weight. This bottle was disgorged January 18, 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2014.

BH 91 (10/2018): Moderately golden color. While there is limited oxidative character on the overtly yeasty nose that reflects notes of apple cider and lemon rind, there is still enough to notice. In the same vein, there is excellent richness to the concentrated, suave and intense medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate complexity and power if limited refinement. The mousse is dense and abundant if not especially fine on the very dry but not really austere bitter lemon-inflected finale. Like virtually all of the Selosse wines, I would describe this as particular but if your taste runs to mildly oxidative Champagne, you will very likely love this. By contrast, if you prefer pure and racy examples, this may impress you less.

VM 92 (12/2022): The Bastardo Quatro Pipas, a blend of four barrels, is soft, creamy and wonderfully inviting. There are no hard edges or angular contours here. Crushed dried flowers, cedar, leather and a gentle hint of spice all meld together in this immensely pleasing, sensual Madeira. This quirky, exotically floral Madeira from the nearly-extinct Bastardo is compelling and full of personality. This is the 2021 bottling. (Drink between 2022-2032). Antonio Galloni.

WA 97 (8/2012): There are just 168 bottles of the spellbinding non-vintage H&H Inauguration Wine that was bottled in April 2008. It is deep amber in color. The nose is potent, rocketing from the glass with dried honey, burnt treacle, cumin, cardamom and white pepper that are brilliantly defined. The palate is very powerful with a penetrating bravura of an entrance that includes shaved ginger, white pepper, orange peel and honey. There is immense weight in the mouth along with layer upon layer of viscous marmalade and lemongrass notes that dovetail into orange peel, mango, dried quince and ginger towards the finish. This is an assertive, demonstrative, compelling Madeira wine.

WA 92 (2/1995): It is my opinion that Taylor's tawny ports are the best of their type. When tasted against other tawnys, they all exhibit more aromatic personalities, greater fruit and ripeness, and a wonderful sweetness and length. Although I find the Thirty Year Old Tawny admirable, I prefer the richer, more vibrant Twenty Year Old Tawny.

WA 89 (8/2017): The NV Taylor's 325th Anniversary Reserve Tawny Port is a field blend that comes in at 108 grams per liter of residual sugar. Already in the marketplace, it was bottled in 2017 with a bar-top cork and an old type of bottle—a sort of "Dutch Onion," a 1696 replica—in celebration of Taylor's 325th Anniversary. There are both young and old components to this, the "best wines" originally destined for Taylor's 10- to 40-year-old Tawnies. It is, however, closer to a young Tawny at only eight years in average age, even with some dollops of those older components that give it just a little extra complexity. Despite the fancy bottle and the anniversary, this Reserve was meant as a celebration at a nice price, not an unaffordable and awe-inspiring trophy. Taylor's typical 10-year Tawnies compete well with it, candidly, and probably best it. Still, bright and fresh, it is a lively young Tawny that has fine precision and a youthful feel, with just a bit of that complex edge, a touch of caramel and chocolate. It's worth buying just for the atmospheric bottle, but the wine is nice, too, a bit of an overachiever for a Reserve Tawny. These theoretically last a long while, of course, but it is made to be drinkable on release, not held. Drink it a little cool.

| WA 88 (2/2010): The non-vintage Zinfandoodle V6.7 exhibits a dark ruby color along with copious quantities of berry fruit intermixed with herbs, pepper, and spice. It is a medium-bodied, seductive, round, delicious blend to enjoy over the next several years.
Consistently fine wines with considerable personality/individuality are produced by Fred Scherrer, a longtime cellar rat who used to work at Dehlinger. |
