WA 97 (11/2017): The 2002 NPU – Nec Plus Ultra Extra Brut, a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir exclusively from grand cru villages, has a golden color and opens with a beautifully complex and refined bouquet of matured fruit and iodine flavors. Fermented and aged entirely in small oak barrels (pièces) for ten months and then ten years on the lees in bottle, this has lovely oxidation, ripeness and depth. Very pure and fine but wide, highly complex and elegant on the palate, the 2002 NPU combines the famous freshness of the vintage with the complexity of the composition and the bottle aging. The finish is very long, tight, rich and complex but stimulatingly dry, pure and mineral. This is a great Champagne to be enjoyed today or over the next few decades.
VM 93 (12/2017): The 2002 Extra Brut N.P.U. Nec Plus Ultra is one of the last wines to be released in this vintage. Rich, ample and resonant on the palate, the N.P.U. offers plenty of immediacy and depth. Vinification and aging in barrel gives the N.P.U. considerable textural breadth and volume to the apricot, baked apple, vanillin and sweet French oak flavors, along with distinctly oxidative, burnished overtones. | VM 89 (12/2002): Subtle aromas of orange zest and ginger spice. Dry, bright and elegant, with aromatic flavors of orange oil, pear, quince and fresh nuts. Tactile but fairly light-bodied. Finishes with very good persistence and cut. |

| WA 90 (12/2008): The NV Rose Premiere Cuvee is a delicious, mineral-laced, perfumed Rose that reveals notable elegance and personality. This deceptively medium-bodied wine will show at its best at the dinner table, as it is a serious, structured wine that can stand up to all but the most robust foods. This is another new bottling from Paillard, introduced just this year, and this is the February, 2008 disgorgement. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010. |
