Barolo Gramolere |
$69 |

|
| |
WA 94 (6/2013): The 2009 Barolo Gramolere comes from a vineyard in Monforte d’Alba located at 400 meters above sea level and offers the greatest purity of fruit in this warm vintage. Again, balsam notes of dried rosemary and cola give the wine a very clean and lively bouquet that lifts straight from the glass. Lively tones of candied cherry and exotic spice appear at the rear. The end results speak of a complex and confident Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. VM 91 (11/2013): Medium red. Distinctly cooler on the nose than the San Lorenzo di Verduna, offering scents of cherry and musky underbrush. Then sweeter and more concentrated in the mouth, but still with a coolish, savory character to the red fruit and balsamic flavors. Finishes with serious tannins that turn a bit dry with air. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 93 (5/2013): Firm tannins are center stage in the 2009 Barolo Arborina. There is plenty of depth and power in the glass, but this is very much a wine that needs time to come together. The drive, energy and tension are all pure hallmarks of Arborina. Mint, pine, freshly cut flowers and sweet red berries flesh out on the finish. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 94 (6/2012): The 2009 Tignanello is quite beautiful. Cedar, graphite, sweet herbs, licorice and leather add complexity to a core of highly expressive red fruits. The 2009 impresses for its energy, drive and focus. Today, the 2009 comes across as slightly understated relative to many recent vintages, especially 2007 and 2008. There is a silkiness and polish that is reminiscent of the 2004. Tignanello is 75% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc from vineyards in San Casciano Val di Pesa, one of the most evocative hillsides in all of Italy. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. VM 92 (9/2012): Bright red-ruby. Ripe aromas of sweet red cherries macerated in alcohol, cedar, cinnamon and pepper. Suave and seamless, with soft, almost-overripe flavors of redcurrant jam, red plum syrup, stewed red plum and tobacco leaf. A very distinctive and much creamier than usual Tignanello, finishing with supple tannins and excellent length. Obviously the product of a warmer year, and though this Outstanding Tignanello is a touch less refined than some recent standout vintages, it's hard to argue with its sweet, soft style and early drinking appeal. No need to cellar this too long. |

WA 92 (6/2013): The 2009 Barolo Rocche takes us in a new direction thanks to its seductive bouquet that is woven tight with menthol tones and dried ginger backed by savory scents of leather, tobacco, sweet spice and licorice. The wine shows added complexity and nuance. I’m sure these tones will shape up nicely in the cellar. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. VM 91 (1/2015): An attractive, mid-weight wine, the 2009 Barolo Rocche dei Brovia is all about grace. The style is quite weightless and perfumed, with lovely overall balance and silky tannins that make the wine approachable, even in its youth. Small red berries, mint and spices are woven into the subtle, understated finish. Overall the 2009 comes across as a wine to drink over the near and medium-term given its decidedly mid-weight structure. (Drink between 2015-2029). Antonio Galloni. |

| WA 95+ (8/2013): A super rich Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2009 Coniale mirrors the same themes of elegance and abundance seen in the other wines from Castellare di Castellina. Black fruit, leather and spice add muscle and staying power. Despite the wine’s massive power and concentration, it also reveals unmistakable finesse in the way its various elements are so seamlessly integrated. Tiny details of tar, black licorice and rosemary sprig add to its overall complexity and give it an all-Italian personality. The aging potential is great. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2033. |

WA 96 (6/2015): Because Monfortino was not produced this vintage, the 2009 Barolo Cascina Francia benefits from the extra fruit that would have otherwise gone toward the world's most celebrated Barolo Riserva. I tasted the 2009 Barolo Cascina Francia in barrel two years ago and am delighted by its steady evolution. This is a wine of sophisticated intensity and persuasion. The bouquet peels back to reveal dark fruit, licorice, tar and dried rose. The vintage was warm, resulting in extra plumpness and roundness in terms of mouthfeel. The style is slightly more immediate, but this is a great aging wine nonetheless. JS 95 (1/2014): This has a wonderful long and beautiful style with super fine and persistent tannins. It is full yet so elegant. The perfumes are of roses and dark fruits. It's savory on the palate. Roberto Conterno made no Monfortino this vintage so declassified the entire production into this wine as he did in 2007. Drink or hold. VM 94 (11/2013): Good bright medium red. Deep, expressive nose offers strawberry, camphor, marzipan and earthy minerality. Like liquid silk on entry, then very rich, ripe and sweet in the middle, offering complex notes of red berries, roasted herbs, leather and smoked meat. Finishes sappy and very long, with lush tannins and serious breadth. The tannins are more than supported by the wine's strong mid-palate material. This wine includes the fruit that would normally go into the Monfortino bottling. Stephen Tanzer. |

JS 97 (8/2012): Best Guado al Tasso ever. Wonderful nose of crushed blackberries and cherries with hints of dark chocolate. Full-bodied, with soft and round tannins and a long, long finish. It goes on for minutes. Now just a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Better after 2015. WA 94 (6/2012): The 2009 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso impresses for its richness and sheer power. Mocha, sweet spices, plums, blackberries and herbs wrap around the palate as this intense wine shows off its pedigree. Layers of flavor build to the deep, intensely satisfying finish. The 2009 is complete and harmonious from the very first taste. In 2009 the blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. VM 93 (9/2012): Bright medium ruby. Complex aromatic nose of blackberry, mocha, nutmeg, clove and tar lifted by a violet note. Lush, dense and seamless, with impressive volume nicely leavened by adequate acidity, which gives this big boy an element of finesse. Finishes powerful and very long, with a lingering chocolatey nuance and tannins that are quite suave and fine. |

Layers of flavor build to the textured, suave finish. This Sangiovese-based red has maintained considerable freshness and vibrancy. Sweet floral and spiced notes linger on the understated finish. Barolo Brunate |
$69 |

| |
VM 94 (5/2013): Oberto's 2009 Barolo Vigneto Brunate is striking. It brings together the very best qualities of the year and site. Dramatic and enveloping, the 2009 offers up layers of dark fruit, menthol, licorice, spices and tar. The power and breadth of Brunate comes through beautifully in this intense yet impeccably balanced Barolo. Brunate is of course considered one of Piedmont's greatest sites. Even in a warm year like 2009, the vineyard's personality is impossible to overwhelm. JS 92 (7/2013): Aromas of ripe strawberries and hints of hazelnuts and chocolate. Full body, with silky tannins and a long finish. Firm and straightforward. Try in 2015. WA 91 (6/2013): Distinctively masculine and bold, the 2009 Barolo Vigneto Brunate presents savory tones of cured meat, bresaola and dried tobacco leaf. There’s little latitude here in terms of the fruity offerings on display. The finish is dusty and dark and those firmly polished tannins really do kick in with determination and power. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2025. VM 90+ (12/2013): Good deep red. Very ripe, musky aromas of plum, truffle, leather, menthol and brown spices. Ripe and sweet on entry, then on the dry side in the middle; not a particular vibrant or fruit-driven style. Finishes with good length and serious dusty tannins that avoid coming off as dry. |

JS 98 (10/2014): I have always been impressed with the depth and grace to this wine since I tasted it from barrel. It's full-bodied with super integrated tannins and so much intense currant, berry character. A classic quality in this pure merlot wonder; feels like Pomerol from a top year like 2009. Try in 2017. VM 96 (9/2012): Good full ruby. Superripe, pure aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet, minerals, milk chocolate and exotic spices. Superconcentrated, rich and seamless, offering explosive sweetness but also great verve, thanks to bright acidity that provides wonderful lift and clarity to the blackberry, blueberry and black cherry flavors. Finishes with ultra-suave tannins and a kaleidoscope of violet and Oriental spice flavors. A very great Masseto from a hot year, when I would have expected the merlot to suffer a bit. But unlike in 2003, when it wasn't just hot but dry as well, Masseto's unique microclimate allowed the merlot to avoid major stress in 2009. As good and refined as the Ornellaia is in 2009, I think the Masseto has an extra layer of complexity and depth. Ian d'Agata. WA 94+ (6/2012): The 2009 Masseto bursts from the glass with dark red berries, blackberries, flowers, licorice and tar. It shows lovely up-front juiciness and expressive inner perfume in a surprisingly accessible style for this wine. Like the Ornellaia, the 2009 Masseto has quite a bit of freshness, although it, too, is medium-bodied in structure. In this vintage the Ornellaia team was especially selective and only used part of the three vineyards that typically go into Masseto. I have been fortunate to taste every vintage of Masseto, most more than once recently. Masseto has a great track record for aging, even in the smallest, least promising of vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. |

| VM 97 (6/2012): The 2009 Ornellaia caresses the palate with layers of seamless, radiant fruit. Sweet red berries, mocha, flowers, new leather and spices are some of the many notes that are layered in this sumptuous, totally beautiful wine. The 2009 stands out for its silky tannins and phenomenal overall balance. This is one of those wines that will probably enjoy a long drinking window. There is little question the ability to blend grape varieties was a huge help in this vintage. In my opinion, that is the main reason Ornellaia is a slightly more complete wine than Masseto in 2009. In one of my blind tastings, the 2009 made a very eloquent case for itself as the wine of the vintage. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. In 2009 winemaker Axel Heinz used the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc ever in Ornellaia and gave the wine less time in oak, both with the goal of preserving as much freshness as possible. Antonio Galloni. |

JS 97 (9/2011): Amazing aromas of black truffles, crushed blackberries and dark chocolate. Dried flowers too. Full-bodied, with wonderful fruit that is layered and gorgeous. The finish is fruity, long and stylish. Give it three years to come together. Best after 2013. VM 94 (6/2012): The 2009 Galatrona is a beautifully centered wine. It shows terrific energy, freshness and vibrancy from start to finish. Cassis, blackberries, mint, spices and new leather are all woven together nicely in the 2009. Firm yet well-integrated tannins support the finish. Although quite overt today, the 2009 appears to have the structure to age well for a number of years. The 2009 is a serious wine with a bright future. Both bottles I tasted were immensely pleasing. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Antonio Galloni 6/2012. |

| VM 93 (7/2014): Good bright medium red. Rich aromas of raspberry, red cherry, licorice, sweet pipe tobacco and violet. Rich, layered and sweet, boasting superb definition and depth to its fleshy but vibrant red berry, sweet spice and licorice flavors. This big, broad, perfumed wine finishes with excellent clarity and floral lift. Another standout Brunello from this producer and easily one of the year's best. I'd enjoy it within the next ten years, but I suspect it has the structure to age for longer than that. Ian d'Agata. |

WA 92+ (2/2014): From Giulio Salvioni’s La Cerbaiola estate, the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a fantastic wine with an impressive degree of darkness and broad aromas of Indian spice and ripe fruit. The 2008 Brunello presents a more voluptuous style than is customary with the tradition-minded Salvioni. The wine shows a good degree of baby fat that should serve it well as it ages over the next decade or longer. Drink: 2017-2028. VM 91 (5/2016): The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most immediate and one-dimensional wines in this tasting. There is good depth and intensity in the glass, but much less of the layered quality and nuance of the very best years. Still, the 2009 remains young, with little in the way of aromatic development. All things considered, the 2009 is an excellent wine for satisfying the Salvioni urge while some of the more important surrounding vintages continue to develop in the cellar. (Drink between 2016-2024). Antonio Galloni. |

The 2009 is simply glorious from the very first taste. A kick of Sangiovese acidity gives the wine its lift and vibrancy on the finish. This is a great showing. Carbonaione is 100% Sangiovese (Lamole clone) grown on the hillsides of Greve. The wine spent 15 months in 350-liter oak barrels, 50% new. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2029. |

| WA 92+ (8/2011): The 2009 Guidalberto flows across the palate with layers of radiant red fruit. This is another striking, supple Guidalberto loaded with personality. Stylistically it is quite close to the 2007, but with perhaps a touch less body but equally silky, polished tannins. Freshly cut roses, spices and a burst of pure red berries add nuance on the finish. Guidalberto is no longer the stunning value it once was, but it is quite gorgeous in this vintage just the same. This is easily one of the best vintages I can recall tasting. Guidalberto is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. |

JS 98 (12/2012): This is fantastic. Intense and super long on the palate. It's insanely complex yet subtle with so much going on, with a beautiful balance and tension. It is full and powerful with a big juicy character that goes on for minutes. Muscular yet covered with pretty fruit. Elegance with force. Hard not to drink. But better in 2016. VM 97+ (9/2012): (80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% cabernet franc): Bright full ruby. Pure, perfumed aromas of blackberry, cassis, lead pencil, violet and minerals, complicated by a superripe note of crushed raspberry. Extremely primary and pure, offering sharply defined cassis, violet and mineral flavors of great class. The perfectly integrated acidity and a vibrant floral character from the cabernet franc give the middle palate terrific lift. Though very ripe in its flavor profile, this wine conveys a rare lightness of touch that is typical of Sassicaia but rare for this vintage on the Tuscan Coast. Finishes with noble tannins and outstanding palate-staining length. For all its creamy power and charm, I really like this wine's balance and the subtle delivery of its complex flavors. I have tasted every vintage of Sassicaia on countless occasions and, other than the legendary 1985, I have no doubt that this is one of the two or three best Sassicaias at a similar stage of development. Though the 2009 won't surpass the once-in-a-lifetime 1985, it is starting out its life in bottle with almost the same perfectly balanced, opulent creamy texture and depth of that incredible wine, which I remembertasting both in Rome and in Tuscanyimmediately upon release. In fact, that wine was so good that even thoughI was still auniversity student (and thus on a studentbudget), it was the firsttime in my lifeI ever bought a full case. If I were a university student today, I'd do the same with the 2009, even though the price of Sassicaia is far higher today. There's profound potential here, but younger wine writers and consumers who weren't seriously involved in tasting back in the '80s may well be surprised by this wine's voluptuous, atypically opulent texture and thus miss its sheer greatness. Ian d'Agata. WA 96+ (4/2017): The 2009 Bolgheri Sassicaia is the richest and darkest edition in recent memory. This super-charged Sassicaia boasts enormous power and concentration thanks to its impressive phenolic foundation. Black currant and blackberry confit are followed by spice, leather, tar, road paving and black truffle. It shows preliminary tertiary signs with licorice and crushed mineral. The wine wraps thickly over the palate delivering tight textural firmness and integrated structure. You taste the sweetness of the fruit and the depth of the oak tannins. No matter how you approach it, this wine scores very high on the intensity meter. For the record: Tenuta San Guido General Manager Carlo Paoli expressed concern about the integrity of his sample, but I remained extremely pleased by the gorgeous wine before me. |

JS 96 (8/2011): This is rich and powerful, with loads of fruit, lots of licorice and spices. Full and very velvety . Wonderful richness and balance. What a finish. Sweet and long. Incredible. Pure Merlot. Best in 2014. VM 95 (6/2012): The 2009 Redigaffi bursts onto the palate with an exciting melange of blackberries, grilled herbs, flowers, mint, rosemary and spices. It is a powerful, juicy Merlot loaded with fruit, but there is also more than enough structure to provide support. Dark notes of tar, incense and smoke add complexity on the finish. Generally I prefer Redigaffi between ages 5 and 15. Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 91 (4/2012): The 2009 Barbera d'Alba Scarrone impresses for its sleek, refined personality. This is an interesting wine in the way it meld the radiance of a warm year with the medium-bodied structure of a cooler vintage. Soft red berries, flowers and licorice are some of the notes that are woven together in this focused, articulate Barbera. The 2009 Scarrone is pretty reserved next to most recent other vintages. In exchange, it will drink well pretty much right out of the gate. I would be surprised if there is considerable upside to be gained from cellaring this more than a handful of years. (Drink between 2013-2019). Antonio Galloni. |

| WA 94 (6/2013): The 2009 Barolo Castiglione delivers a radiant but subdued quality with polished notes of dry mineral, black fruit, tar, licorice, leather and many more levels of complexity. This entry-level Barolo demonstrates that great results are achieved in 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. |

| VM 93 (5/2013): The 2009 Barolo Lazzarito is another layered, expressive Barolo. The hallmarks of this site in Serralunga emerge only gradually over time. My sense is that the 2009 still has a lot to say. Tar, smoke, licorice, plums, soy and incense are some of the nuances that flesh out on the rich, resonant finish. Antonio Galloni. |
