WA 96 (1/2009): The 2004 Solaia is breathtaking, as it so often is. Soaring aromatics lead to a sweet, layered expression of dark fruit. The wine possesses super clarity and precision with a gorgeous inner tension that carries all the way through to the long finish. The tannins remain incredibly finessed and silky. This is a more restrained, elegant style than the full-throttle 2001. 2004 is the first vintage in which the component wines were aged separately, rather than together, as had been the custom in previous vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. WS 96 (10/2007): Shows beautiful, complex aromas of flowers, currant and Christmas cake. Full-bodied, chewy and powerful. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2010. 5,835 cases made. VM 89 (8/2007): (cabernet sauvignon, sangiovese and cabernet franc) Very saturated dark ruby, almost black. Intense bell pepper slaps you across the face, with aromas of dark cherry, cigar box and underbrush following. Dense, highly concentrated and intensely flavored, with harmonious acidity framing the sweet black fruit and black pepper flavors, and little of the bell pepper character showing on the palate. Finishes long, with very silky tannins. But the green pepper aroma is neither typical nor endearing in what is usually one of Italy's greatest wines. Perhaps I have caught this at an awkward stage. |

WS 95 (10/2007): (WS #4 wine of 2007) Offers aromas of blackberry, with hints of raisin and lots of spices. Full and velvety, with wonderful concentration and a long, rich finish. Very stylish and exciting. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2012. 26,665 cases made. WA 94 (1/2009): The estate’s 2004 Tignanello is a modern-day classic. Suggestions of macerated cherries, menthol, sweet spices, licorice and French oak meld seamlessly into a perfumed silky-textured core of ripe fruit. The tannins remain incredibly fine throughout. The wine’s vibrant color and fresh flavors suggest it will age gracefully over the next decade. This is a remarkably refined Tignanello. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. VM 93 (8/2007): ( a blend of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc) Medium dark ruby. Captivating nose redolent of pretty red and black fruits, black pepper and graphite, with complicating suggestions of tobacco and prune. Very fresh and buoyant on entry, with pure flavors of ripe fruit and black pepper, then long and extremely fresh on the back end. Here one can find evidence of all three varieties. Silky tannins, noteworthy definition and impeccable balance make this one of the best young Tignanellos in recent memory. |

VM 96 (1/2018): The Barolo Villero is not my favorite Brovia wine, so I don’t tend to reach for it very often. Perhaps that is a mistake. The 2004 is simply magnificent. Dense and powerful in the glass, with all of the alluring aromatics and balsamic notes that are typical of this site, the Villero simply has it all. Antonio Galloni. WA 94 (10/2009): The 2004 Barolo Villero is heady, sensual stuff. This ethereal, mid-weight Barolo wafts from the glass with white truffles, spices, menthol and sweet perfumed roses in a defining expression of this Castiglione Falletto vineyard. The wine retains tons of grace and elegance as firm, yet well-integrated tannins frame the fruit through to the close. This is a terrific effort from Brovia! I tasted two bottles; the first was open and accessible, the second very much shut down. I would give this wine at least another few years in bottle before giving it a try. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. |

WA 97 (6/2009): The estate’s 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is simply extraordinary. Enticing layers of mint, violets, black cherries, menthol and minerals lead to an explosive core of fruit. The wine continues to grow in the glass, showing off its first-class pedigree. Amazingly pure, textured and rich, this vivid, chiseled Brunello dazzles from start to finish, where balsamic notes make a final appearance. If forced to drink only one wine from Montalcino, I might very well choose Diego Molinari’s sumptuous Brunello. This is an incredible wine! Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. VM 94 (8/2009): Bright, saturated dark red. High-pitched, perfumed aromas of crushed raspberry, pungent minerality and rose petal. Silky, suave and refined, with lovely clarity and class to the pure flavors of crushed red berries and flowers. Not as big as the 2001, and more dominated in the early going by treble notes, but this is wonderfully sappy and insinuating wine with a superb rising finish. Its almost liqueur-like red cherry flavor is joined by deeper notes of leather and earth-plus a suggestion of exotic flowers-after extended aeration. A beauty, and now routinely one of the best Brunellos of each new vintage. |

| VM 100 (2/2021): The 2004 Barolo Riserva Monfortino confirms its place as one of the finest Monfortinos ever made. From magnum, it is so special. The long growing season produced a Monfortino of unusual silkiness, perfume and elegance. In many ways, the 2004 is the first modern Monfortino – the first vintage that was gorgeous right out of the gate, qualities it shares with the 2008 and 2014, also wines from later-ripening vintages. Soaring aromatics and silky tannins give the 2004 so much sheer appeal that recall the 1982. The 2004 has long been one of my favorites, as it is again on this night. Antonio Galloni. |

| WA 98+ (2/2012): The 2004 Vigna Sere is the perfect conclusion to a vintage that will go down as one of Dal Forno’s most magical. Sweet, silky tannins support layers of super-refined, elegant fruit in this magical sweet red. Mocha, espresso, new leather, raspberry jam and spices emerge with time in the glass, but this is really a wine that shows off textural finesse more than anything else. I have tasted this wine many times since it was in barrel and later in bottle. It has never been anything less than spellbinding. It is one of the most magical sweet dessert wines I have ever tasted. At eight years of age the 2004 remains a an infant. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. |

WA 96 (4/2010): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva reveals gorgeous clarity, precision and richness in a generous, enveloping style. The fruit remains incredibly pure and almost primary at this stage, suggesting the wine has many years of fine drinking ahead of it. Deceptively medium in body, Fuligni’s Riserva has plenty of tannic clout to back up the sexy, opulent fruit. A layered, impeccable finish rounds out this utterly brilliant Riserva. Readers will not want to miss this fabulous Brunello from Fuligni. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. WS 96 (6/2010): Aromas of blueberry and blackberry, with hints of lilac. Full and velvety, with powerful chewy tannins, but so well-defined and polished. Very long and intense, with bright acidity. Needs time to come together. Best after 2012. 1,085 cases made. |

VM 90 (5/2015): Bruno Giacosa's 2004 Barolo Croera is an excellent choice for drinking over the next decade or so. A pretty, understated wine, the Croera offers lovely balance in a feminine style that is typical of La Morra. Rose petal, mint, sage, crushed raspberries and anise shape the aromatic, mid-weight finish. If opened today, the 2004 needs a bit of air to soften the tannins a touch. The Croera is the one and only Barolo Bruno Giacosa made from La Morra. Giacosa eventually sold this parcel after a series of wines that did not meet his exacting standards and were never released. This bottle showed quite a bit better than the bottle I tasted for my recent 2004 Barolo retrospective. As it turns out, both bottles were from the same case I purchased upon release. Antonio Galloni. WS 90 (6/2008): Aromas of plum, coffee and dried flowers follow through to a medium body, with silky tannins and a soft, refined finish. A delicate young Barolo. This is a new single-vineyard wine from Giacosa. Best after 2011. 600 cases made. |

VM 97 (5/2015): Giacosa's 2004 Barolo Falletto is a rock star. The truth is that, if tasted alone, the white label Falletto could easily be mistaken for the Red Label Riserva. It is every bit that compelling. Intensely perfumed yet also towering in stature, the 2004 is simply magnificent. The main difference between the white label and red label is finesse in the tannin, which is a bit less polished here. But that is only because there is a comparison. Taken on its own, the Falletto is one of the very finest wines of the vintage. Elegance meets power. With a little advance aeration, the 2004 can be enjoyed young, but it is frankly best left alone for another few years, especially for readers who only own a few bottles. This is yet another 2004 that has really blossomed in bottle. Antonio Galloni WA 96 (12/2007): Giacosa’s 2004 Barolo Falletto is so compelling it will be hard not to drink it in its youth. This gorgeous Barolo reveals a deeply structured frame layered with sweet dark fruit, mint, spice and pine. At once delicate and powerful, it is a beautifully finessed wine that is sure to provide much pleasure. A recent bottle of the 1982 is a testament to the virtues of this great site as interpreted by Bruno Giacosa. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. VM 94 (12/2007): Saturated medium red. Musky aromas of sappy cherry liqueur and minerals. Juicy, mineral-driven and gripping, with excellent clarity and thrust to its intense, slightly candied flavors. A very sexy, wonderfully rich and broad Barolo with substantial ripe tannins. The pHs of the Barolos and Barbarescos here are higher today than they were previously, admits Giacosa, but that's a function of warmer years and riper fruit rather than any change in philosophy. WS 92 (6/2008): A delicate wine, with intense aromas and some strawberry, citrus fruit and cherry character. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a long, beautiful finish. Very pretty. All in balance and refinement. Best after 2010. 1,200 cases made. JS 91 (5/2012): Compelling aromas of citrus fruit and berries. Full-bodied, medium tannins and a long pretty finish. This is ready. |

| WA 92 (2/2008): The 2004 Campoleone, the estate’s signature wine, is simply gorgeous. This blend of equal parts Sangiovese and Merlot spent 12 months in French oak. It is a firmly structured wine with superb density on the palate, where layers of tobacco, dark cherries, earthiness, smoke, licorice and toasted oak all come to life. The tannins finish slightly dry and astringent, likely a result of an overly exuberant use of French oak. Still, this is a beautifully delineated, focused Campoleone. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022. |

| VM 96 (10/2008): The 2004 Barolo Cappella di Santo Stefano is drop-dead gorgeous. The wine reveals notable clarity in its translucent, violet-hued color. Vibrant dark cherries, tar, smoke, sweet herbs and toasted oak sweep across the palate in a stunning expression of Nebbiolo and the high-altitude Perno vineyard in Monforte. This wine is all about precision, delineation and striking balance. The oak is beautifully integrated and the tannins convey an impression of vitality and poise. This is an emotional, breathtaking Barolo of the highest level. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 97 (5/2015): (Magnum) As has now become the norm here, Maria-Theresa Mascarello presents her older wines from magnum. The 2004 is a beautiful Barolo to behold, with an interplay of power and finesse that is utterly captivating. Orange peel, white pepper, wild flowers, lavender, mint and rose petals all blossom in the glass. The 2004 is just a bit less polished than the wines Mascarello makes today, although the truth is that by this time her late father, Bartolo, was not able to spend any time in the cellar because of illness. Today's wines are a bit more polished, but the 2004 is superb just the same, especially from magnum. Antonio Galloni. WS 95 (12/2009): Shows aromas of dried flowers, mushroom and plum, verging on prune. Full-bodied, with soft, velvety tannins and beautiful fruit. This is generous but subtle, with chewy tannins and loads of character. The real deal. Best after 2011. |

WA 96 (10/2007): Mascarello’s 2004 Barolo Monprivato is an explosive wine with an almost Pinot-like expression of purity in its fruit. This round, sweet Barolo is extremely primary at this stage, with tons of dense fruit that almost cover the wine’s tannins completely. Subtle overtones of roses and tar develop in the glass, rounding out this majestic wine. Monprivato is one of the world’s very finest values in collectible, age-worthy wine, and the 2004 is another classic in the making. I was blown away by this wine’s sheer balance and harmony, both of which are remarkable considering the wine’s age. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034. VM 91-94 (12/2007): Moderately saturated medium red. Captivating, soil-driven nose melds pungent herbs, blueberry, mocha, tobacco, smoke and earth. Quite suave on entry, then sweet, floral and a bit unforthcoming in the middle, with subtle hints of menthol, herbs and flowers kept under wraps by firm acidity. Nuanced in a Burgundian way. There's nothing particularly accessible about this very closed young wine, but the complex, mouthcoating finish suggests that it has considerable potential. |

| VM 92 (6/2009): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Manachiara is the richest and darkest of these wines. Today the wine displays exceptional harmony and balance, with a long, polished finish. Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 91 (6/2009): Neri's 2004 Brunellos are immensely successful. I look forward with great anticipation to the 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto, which should be released some time next year. The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a big, fruit-driven wine. Made in a concentrated, opulent style, this Brunello offers tons of fruit and a round, soft personality. There isn't too much nuance in the wine today, but that should develop in bottle. The long, polished finish invites a second taste. For now, this remains one of the more overtly fruit-forward wines of the vintage. The entry-level Brunello spends roughly 40 months in large, neutral oak. Antonio Galloni. |

WS 98 (9/2009): Very powerful and rich, with blackberry, licorice and light toasty oak. This has pure fruit. Turns exotic and decadent. Big and full-bodied, with dense, powerful tannins, but velvety and beautiful. Layered and gorgeous. Best from 2011 through 2018. 1,950 cases made. WA 96 (4/2010): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto is deep and powerful in its smoke, tar, spices, scorched earth and plums. The wine has shut down quite a bit since I last tasted it a few months ago, and the refined silky tannins that were present a while back have turned decidedly virile. Still, the wine’s pedigree is impossible to miss, and the only thing this needs is time, probably lots of it. Pretty scents of soy, smoke and incense inform the long, elegant finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. VM 90 (7/2010): Fully saturated deep ruby-red. Very deep aromas of ripe red berries and licorice, plus nuances of minerals and graphite. Then dense, rich and smooth in the mouth, with concentrated flavors of red and dark cherry, smoky plum and flint. Finishes long and smooth, with no hint of excess alcohol or of tired fruit-two characteristics that mar many '04 Brunellos. This is no doubt due to the Cerretalto vineyard, which is cooler and ripens later than many in the zone. That said, I really dislike the note of graphite on the nose, and never want to find this element in a Brunello. Even though I understand owner Giacomo Neri's assertion that this note is typical of the Cerretalto vineyard, I have always scored this wine lower for its presence. |

WS 96 (4/2009): Offers crushed berries, with flowers and sandalwood. The nose is reserved, but interesting. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. Very tight and stylish. Racy and powerful. Needs time. Best after 2011. 6,750 cases made. JS 93 (12/2010): Very fresh for a 2005 with dense fruit and silky tannins. Not the same depth of fruit of the 2004 or the 2006 for that matter, but it is clearly one of the best 2005’s in my opinion. I suggest another couple of years of cellar age. Great finesse, richness, and freshness for the vintage. WA 93 (6/2009): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova reveals layers of dark perfumed fruit intermingled with French oak, spices, minerals, violets and licorice. The Tenuta Nuova is impressive mostly for its textural richness and sheer depth, both qualities it has in spades. The finish is long, sweet and pure. Here, too, the wine will need at least a few years in bottle before its full range of aromas and flavors emerges. Neri gave the Tenuta Nuova 30 months in medium-sized French oak tonneaux. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2024. |

WA 92 (6/2009): The estate’s 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous for its clarity, elegance and precision. Medium in body, the wine reveals ripe red cherries, mint, minerals, tobacco and licorice in a taut, medium-bodied style. Today the Brunello is fairly tightly wound, but it should be a beauty once the tannins soften somewhat. This is a wine of grace, purity and superb balance. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. JS 91 (2/2011): Love the fresh mushroom, dried dark fruits and cedar aromas that follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a tangy finish. The acidity is a little aggressive but it's very Brunello in character. No reason to wait. WS 89 (12/2009): Raspberries, blackberries and minerals on the nose follow through to a medium body, with bright acidity. Clean and bright. A little austere for the vintage. Best after 2010. 20,800 cases made. VM 88+ (8/2009): Bright, dark red. Black cherry, menthol and truffley underbrush on the reduced, rather bound-up nose. Rich, broad, ripe and savory; in an elegant if rather primary style, with good vinosity and firm, building tannins giving the wine very good grip. I picked up a slight dryness on the back, but this unevolved wine needs at least a few years in the cellar. Not quite up to my expectations, though. |

VM 95 (7/2009): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille is darker and richer than the Rennina. Black cherries, plums, tar, licorice, minerals and leather all come together in this brooding Brunello. The fruit remains intense and full-bodied all the way through to the powerful and deeply satisfying close. Despite the wine's heft, all of the components are woven together with remarkable harmony. This is a wonderful effort from Angelo Gaja. WS 95 (12/2009): Shows aromas of citrus fruit, with raspberry and blackberry. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and silky tannins. Very well-structured, with a hint of new wood on the finish. Long and balanced. Still needs time. The best wine ever from this estate. Best after 2011. 1,800 cases made. WA 94 (6/2009): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille is darker and richer than the Rennina. WA 96 (12/2007): The estate's 2004 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another awesome wine. Initially linear on entry, it explodes on the palate with a compelling array of dark fruit, smoke, tar, licorice, new leather, plums and baking spices. Although Bric del Fiasc is typically a wine that relies on power, the 2004 is notably refined and elegant, with sweet silky tannins that support the fruit from start to finish. Simply put, this is a remarkable wine from Enrico Scavino. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. WS 95 (6/2008): Dark in color, with gorgeous aromas of blackberry, black licorice and blueberry. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long finish. A bit tight, but pretty and balanced. Very long and cerebral. Best after 2012. 780 cases made. VM 94+ (12/2007): Good deep red. Superripe aromas and flavors of plum liqueur, redcurrant, mocha and chocolate. Sweet, pliant and downright plush; a hugely concentrated, dense wine that saturates every nook and cranny of the palate. Wonderfully shapely, structured wine that finishes with superb grip and length and a captivating juicy quality. A great vintage for this bottling. |

VM 94 (5/2015): The 2004 Barolo Carobric is in a great place today where it is starting to show the first signs of aromatic complexity, yet it also clearly has plenty of upside for the future. Firm yet nicely integrated tannins give the 2004 much of its energy. Sweet tobacco, plums, underbrush, cherries and melted road tar linger on the multi-faceted finish. Carobric is a blend of fruit from Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc. Antonio Galloni. WA 94 (12/2007): Scavino’s 2004 Barolo Carobric comes across as classic in its expression of violets, black cherries, minerals and sweet toasted oak. It too offers gorgeous inner sweetness to its fruit, but it is more focused and less concentrated than the other 2004 Barolos. This is a beautifully proportioned, vibrant Barolo that is sure to find many admirers. Carobric is made from a blend of Rocche di Castiglione, Bric del Fiasc and Cannubi This bottling has often suffered an identity crisis among the single-vineyard wines in the lineup but in recent years its personality has gradually begun to show its potential. The 2004 is a terrific effort. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. WS 93 (6/2008): Beautiful floral and blueberry notes, with hints of spice. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, rich finish. Very ripe and delicious already. But needs time. Best after 2011. 1,580 cases made. |

VM 96 (8/2007): Deep ruby. Absolutely ethereal nose offers intense yet refined aromas of ripe red cherry, smoke, leather and black truffle, with a pretty mineral element nuance and clarity. Velvety-smooth, ripe and rich on entry, then awash with mid-palate flavors of red cherry, smoky red plum, cassis, spices, bay leaf, roasted coffee bean and dark chocolate. Bright acids and silky-smooth tannins give this extraordinary wine extra lift and precision. Compared to recent vintages, this is a far richer and plumper yet extremely refined version of Sassicaia at a similar stage of its development. The finish goes on for minutes, highlighted by an enchanting mineral quality. The best young Sassicaia in years. WS 94 (10/2007): Shows aromas of chocolate, currant and blackberry, with a hint of Spanish cedar. Full-bodied, with firm, velvety tannins and a long finish. Racy and very well-structured. Builds on the palate. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2012. 15,000 cases made. WA 93 (6/2007): The 2004 Sassicaia is a lovely, understated effort. Medium in body, it presents nuanced layers of sweet dark fruit, licorice, menthol and toasted oak that gradually open onto a finely-knit frame of notable length. Today it appears to be quite reticent and still holding back much of its potential. Both bottles I sampled showed less vibrancy and freshness in both color and flavors than the other top 2004s I tasted alongside it, suggesting that the wine is still suffering from bottle shock. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022. |

WS 98 (10/2006): Very complex yet subtle aromas of licorice, dark chocolate, violet and raspberry. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, long finish. Harmonious and wonderful. Reminds me of the great 1997; even better. Merlot. Best after 2008. 650 cases made. VM 94 (10/2006): Saturated deep ruby. Intense aromas of blueberry, licorice, and espresso, complicated by stone and smoky black pepper nuances. Stylish and suave on entry, then elegant and powerful in the middle palate, offering complex pepper, mineral and mocha flavors. Very ripe, highly concentrated, creamy wine yet quite firm, and tannic on the finish. Production was down by about a thousand bottles because Frascolla was unhappy with the quality of three barriques and blended them into the '04 Giusto di Notri. Having tasted this juice directly from the suspect barrels, I can assure you the Giusto di Notri has nothing to complain about! WA 93 (2/2007): The inky-colored 2004 Redigaffi, 100% Merlot aged for 16 months in new oak, offers expressive, nuanced aromatics along with sensations of richly-textured blue and black jammy fruit, minerals, mint, chocolate, spices and sweet toasted oak on big, powerful frame with notable underlying structure and a warm, resonating finish. Although it has enough structure and acidity to drink well for another decade or so, I enjoy Redigaffi most in its youth. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016. |

JS 95 (1/2011): Lovely black licorice, flowers, and ripe fruits on the nose. This is very aromatic. Full bodied but tight, this has gone to sleep for the moment. WS 95 (4/2009): Displays complex aromas of blackberry and cherry, with a hint of licorice. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a delicious finish of wonderful yet subtle fruit. Well-integrated and beautiful. Everything is in the right place. Best after 2011. 5,000 cases made VM 94 (1/2009): His 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is simply beautiful. Now that the wine is in bottle it is even better than when I tasted it from barrel. Firm but silky tannins frame a core of ripe dark fruit as this powerful yet elegant Brunello opens up in the glass. Smoke, cured meats, earthiness and graphite develop in the glass, adding further complexity. Sweet roses and spices linger on the long, refined finish. This is a big, structured Brunello, and like all of Abbruzzese's wines, it needs at least a few years of bottle age before it offers its finest drinking. VM 89 (7/2009): Deep red-ruby. Black fruits and licorice on the nose. Rich but chunky-even a bit youthfully stunted-with deep, fat dark fruit flavors in need of more lift and definition. Finishes with substantial, slightly drying tannins. Aeration brought more sweetness to the dark berry flavors along with notes of chocolate and leather. A serious mouthful of red wine but a bit anonymous as Brunello. |

WA 96+ (4/2010): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano continues to develop very positively. This huge, concentrated Madonna del Piano dazzles for the richness of its fruit and the delineation of its aromas. The clean, vibrant finish suggests many years of cellaring potential. The Valdicava Brunellos are often misunderstood when young because they possess so much richness, but with time in bottle the wines turn more delicate and complete. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. WS 96 (6/2010): Intense aromas of blackberry, blueberry and mineral, with just the right amount of licorice and mineral. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a beautiful finish. Best after 2012. 2,415 cases made. JS 95 (1/2011): This is drinking a little tight at the moment. Still, the bright and decadent fruit give way to nice chewy tannins. Very complex, full bodied, and balanced. This needs some time to come back around. Drink this after 2012. VM 88 (7/2010): Very dark ruby-red with a light rim. Overripe aromas of red cherry, plum and underbrush give the nose a blowsy quality. Then sweet and creamy in the mouth, with pretty balsamic nuances to the ripe red and black fruit flavors. This rather fat wine finishes with decent complexity and smooth tannins, but I found myself wishing for a little more finesse. |
