| WA 92-94 (1/2015): The 2013 Chambolle Musigny les Charmes comes through three plots just under les Fuesselots that make 1.3 hectares. It has a slightly more reserved, masculine bouquet compared to les Plantes at the moment, but there is still fine focus and delineation in situ. The palate is supple in the mouth, leaning more here to the red side of the fruit spectrum with cranberry and pomegranate, structured on the finish with an attractive grainy texture. Outstanding! |

| BH 89-91 (4/2017): (this is actually a premier cru but it is not declared as such.) A ripe and dense nose is composed primarily by notes of plum, violet and warm earth nuances. As is typically the case there is more size, weight and power to the equally dense medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, all wrapped in a firmly structured but well-balanced finish. Patience required. Drink 2025+. Outstanding Top Value! |

| VM 94 (5/2014): The 2010 Volnay Caillerets from Marquis d’Angerville follows. A model of precision and elegance, the Caillerets is true to form with its pulsating energy, tension and minerality. Readers who can be patient are in for a real treat, but even today, the 2010 is simply stellar. Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 92+ (3/2015): Medium red. Sexy, inviting aromas of redcurrant, minerals, smoke and rose petal. Juicy and fine-grained but youthfully imploded, with very good acidity giving this large-scaled wine excellent delineation. Finishes very long and sweet, with a boatload of powerful but ripe tannins. Offers superb potential but will require considerable patience. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets has a more limestone-scented bouquet, the fruit a little redder than that of Fremiets, opening with wilted rose-petal scents infusing the strawberry and red currant aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a little more flesh than the aforementioned premier cru, but maintaining appreciable balance and minerality that is neatly assimilated on the sappy finish. This should blossom once in bottle. There is class here. VM 90+ (3/2016): Good full red. Deep, ripe aromas of dark fruits and spices show a medicinal reserve. Densely packed and concentrated, with strong acidity contributing to a very primary, clenched quality in the early going despite the wine's solid ripeness. Finishes saline and firmly tannic but not dry. This cuvee is often the supplest and tastiest in the cellar at this stage but not this year. Less fruity than the 2014 but tactile and quite long on the aftertaste. Strong acidity should keep this wine young for a long time. Stephen Tanzer. BH 90-92 (4/2015): (from two parcels measuring .65 ha.) Reduction once again dominates the fruit. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is notably finer than that of the Fremiets with the same minerality and punch, all wrapped in a focused and lingering finish that also is ever-so-mildly warm and austere. In the same fashion the balance isn't quite perfect, but this is still very attractive. Drink 2021+. |

| BH 91-93 (4/2019): A softly spiced nose grudgingly reveals wafting and perfumed aromas of plum liqueur, violet and a hint of sandalwood. The medium weight flavors are not quite as dense as those of the Frémiets but they're finer still with plenty of the hallmark minerality suffusing the classy and impeccably well-balanced finale. This Zen-like effort should be approachable after only 5 to 7 years of cellaring if that's your preference. |

| VM 95 (1/2018): Saturated ruby. Youthfully imploded aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis and licorice show no roasted character ("the color of the wine is the only thing that gives away the vintage," noted Guillaume d'Angerville). More pliant than the 2016 but with a magical sugar/acid equilibrium and a complicating element of savory minerality. This insidiously palate-saturating wine finishes with outstanding slatey persistence and grip. I would imagine that this will be long-lived but will it ever really shut down in the bottle? It's hard to imagine that this fruit was harvested on September 4. Stephen Tanzer. |

There is a sense of vitality and sophistication here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. The oak is beautifully integrated, notes of orange rind and even just a subtle touch of honey towards the relatively powerful and sustained finish that just feels audacious. Wonderful. Neal Martin. |

| BH 92-94 (4/2010): This too is beautifully elegant with its ripe and pure aromas of essence of red cherry liqueur, violet and rose petal scents. The equally refined if a bit less mineral-inflected flavors possess excellent verve on the long and slightly less structured finish that also evidences a touch of warmth. This needs to develop more depth but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur. Drink 2030+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 94 (4/2012): A superbly fresh and beautifully layered nose of cool red berry fruit, floral notes and wet stone, the latter of which is present in abundance on the rich yet beautifully detailed middle weight flavors brimming with minerality and energy, all wrapped in a focused, linear and precise finish of huge length, which remains at present youthfully austere. A classic Ducster that will require 10 to 12 years to be at its peak and readers should note that unlike some '08s, this will not be especially approachable young. Drink 2020+. VM 93+ (3/2011): Bright medium red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, cherry, minerals and spices. Lush and silky in the mouth but with terrific energy and a weightless character to the flavors of red fruits, spices and flowers. This round but very young wine has a terrific spine for development in bottle. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and noteworthy vibrancy. Has the most dimension of this set of 2008s. VM 94 (3/2016): Healthy dark red. Highly complex but youthfully restrained nose offers scents of black fruits, violet, chocolate, menthol and minerals, along with some faintly liqueur-like high tones. Boasts Outstanding density of texture, not to mention great lift and power for this bottling, with almost exotic fruit ripeness leavened by strong acidity. Finishes with spectacular lingering perfume of violet, bitter chocolate, wild herbs and mint. An amazingly strong, bulletproof Volnay for the year--or for any vintage, for that matter. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has that citrus-like freshness; that Seville orange marmalade trait that was tangible in a range of mature Clos des Ducs tasted the previous week. There are touches of violet that emerge with continued aeration. The palate is very feminine and refined, laid back almost, but that distracts from the structure underneath and the persistence and minerality on the finish. This is a regal, perhaps one should say, "ducal," Clos des Ducs that should drink beautifully over the next 25-30 years. But as I discovered at the vertical, this vineyard needs several years in the cellar. BH 91-94 (4/2015): (a monopole that measures 2.15 ha.) A gorgeously fresh melange of black raspberry, cherry, tea, violets and anise scents introduces superbly well-detailed middle weight flavors that seem to be built on a base of firm minerality that continues onto the dusty, complex and strikingly persistent finish. As is often the case, this is the most complete wine in the range. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| VM 95+ (10/2019): Saturated dark red-ruby. Deep, powerful aromas of kirsch, menthol, licorice and dark chocolate, along with a faint musky nuance. Wonderfully rich and enveloping wine, with its distinctly dark fruit flavors accented by pepper and spices. At once dense and energetic owing to its sappy minerality and surprising back-end acidity, this wine is nonetheless a bit of a bruiser, as its fully ripe but serious mouth-clenching tannins are going to need time to resolve. But the wine's impressive salty, mineral-driven persistence suggests that it will be long-lived. (13.5% alcohol; September 6 harvest; 35 h/h produced; 3.36 pH; d'Angerville attributed the unusually dark color of this wine to drought conditions in Volnay from mid-June to early August). Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 95 (10/2019): Bright, deep red. Deeper-pitched on the nose than the young 2017, offering aromas of cherry, blueberry, menthol and licorice and an impression of medicinal reserve. A juicy, spicy, impeccably balanced midweight with outstanding clarity and cut and an enticing touch of sweetness leavened by spiciness. Plenty of tannin/acid spine here to frame and carry the fruit through a long, rising, floral finish. This tightly wound beauty shows the sappy quality of the vintage's better examples and should be long-lived. It would be a shame not to give it at least four or five more years of cellaring, if not eight or ten. (13.05% alcohol; September 25 harvest; 45 h/h; 3.39 pH; from what Guillaume d'Angerville described as a good crop, as this vintage escaped the frost, whose effects, he said, did not extend higher than 260 meters: Clos des Ducs is 300 to 325 meters above sea level, with very good air flow to dissipate frost) (Drink between 2025-2042). | BH 93 (10/2019): Bright medium red. Highly perfumed aromas and flavors of raspberry, cherry, licorice and flowers. On the lean side but with firm acidity giving cut to the aromatic palate. All about perfume today, and a bit dry on the back end. A second bottle showed a similar nose, but with some darker fruits emerging with air. It also offered considerably more mid-palate pliancy of texture as well as more stuffing to buffer its tannins. The finish is quite fresh, with nicely integrated acidity. My score, needless to say, is for the second bottle. (13.3% alcohol; the Clos des Ducs vines were harvested on September 7; 42 hectoliters per hectare produced; 3.63 pH; bottled three weeks before our tasting) (Drink between 2022-2038). | BH 91-93 (4/2019): A slightly more deeply pitched nose displays an evident spiciness to the plum, dark raspberry and violet-scented aromas. The highly energetic and intense medium weight flavors offer even more minerality on the well-detailed flavors that possess more depth and a bit more length as well on the firmer finish. This is very Frémiets in character and a wine that should amply reward extended keeping. Drink 2029+. |

WA 92-94 (1/2021): Offering up lovely aromas of sweet berry fruit, plums, orange rind, raw cocoa and spices, the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet is medium to full-bodied, bright and mineral, with a firmer, more tightly wound profile than the gourmand, enveloping Clos des Angles, concluding with a saline finish. It's a touch more refined and ethereal than the 2018, but like that wine, it's built to age. VM 91-93 (12/2020): The 2019 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru (an anomaly since most producers label as "Les Fremiets") is very engaging on the nose with beautiful potpourri and rose petal infused red fruit that is very well defined. The palate is well balanced with succulent red cherries, cranberry and strawberry. There is a spiciness here that becomes more pronounced towards the finish with white pepper and clove, leaving the mouth tingling long after this Fremiet has departed. Excellent. (Drink between 2023-2040). Neal Martin. BH 91-93 (4/2021): A touch of menthol is present on the slightly riper nose that displays notes of plum, violet and anise. There is good refinement here as well though it's coupled with ample punch and minerality, all wrapped in an impressively long, focused and relatively powerful finish. At least some patience strongly advised. (Drink starting 2029). |

WA 91-93 (4/1998): Produced from yields below 40 hectoliters/hectare (admirable for 1996), the Volnay Taillepieds exhibits beguiling aromas of black cherries, blackberries, and spices. On the palate, this complex, concentrated, and extracted wine is beautifully refined, sumptuous, yet structured. It is expansive, broad, medium-to-full-bodied, and packed with juicy cassis and blueberries. This well-balanced and fruit-driven wine has an admirably persistent finish which displays loads of ripe tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2006. The score, on a range and in parentheses, indicates that the wine was tasted from barrel. VM 89+ (4/1999): Good medium red. Spicy aromas of chocolate, minerals and beefsteak tomato; quickly closed up in the glass. Big and broad, with noteworthy volume, but rather unforthcoming today owing to its bracing acidity. Slightly rustic on the finish, and not quite as long as the above. BH 89 (7/1999): Tight, reserved and discreet red pinot fruit notes are followed by exquisitely balanced and delicate flavors of wonderful depth and purity. What this isn't is particularly dense yet the elegance and precision are breathtaking. As with d'Angerville's wines in general, this is an understated wine that will appeal primarily to purists. Drink 2008+. |

| BH 95 (4/2013): ( from a 1.07 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines.) An overtly spicy nose also features notes of ripe plum, violets and an intense stoniness. There is beautiful energy to the strikingly intense and racy flavors where the underlying structural elements are clearly ripe and while firm, they seem less prominent than they are in reality as there is an abundance of buffering dry extract. While the hallmark austerity is indisputably present, the overall impression is that this overtly powerful and massively long effort is less reserved than it typically is, which should allow it to be approachable after only 8 years or so, though it will require fully 15 to reach its peak. Drink 2025+. Outstanding! |

BH 93-95 (4/2021): A ripe, pure, and airy and elegant nose combines notes of plum, black raspberry and spice with soft earth and floral nuances. The mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is almost gossamer fine yet there is no lack of punch to the strikingly long and again, beautifully balanced finale. This isn't as dense as the Champans or the Clos des Ducs though it does possess that ineffable quality of breed. This is pretty much textbook Taillepieds. (Drink starting 2031). VM 93-95 (12/2020): The 2019 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with disarmingly pure red cherry, cranberry and rose petal and incense scents. This is one of the domaine’s most alluring aromatics this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very well balanced with a sensual, deep finish that caresses the mouth. This is a wonderful Volnay that will give 20-30 years of drinking pleasure. This may well end up at the top of my banded score. (Drink between 2024-2050). Neal Martin. WA 93-95 (1/2021): The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds is unusually refined this year, even if it's still very much a vin de garde, unwinding in the glass with notes of cassis, cherries, dark chocolate, warm spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and elegantly muscular, it's deep and layered, with bright acids and beautifully refined tannins. |

WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has a very composed bouquet with intense red cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry preserve aromas, offering that sensuality Burgundy-lovers seek from a Charmes-Chambertin. The palate is medium-bodied and showing the hand of the oak a little at the moment, but it is in proportion with the fruit and the finish maintains fine delineation. VM 90-92 (1/2016): (from vines in the highest part of Mazoyères): Healthy dark red. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, anise and bitter chocolate show less floral character than the Combottes. Rich, fine-grained and deep, conveying a chocolatey ripeness but coming across as a bit earth-bound, with a slightly more rustic texture than the Combottes. This plush wine finishes with big, ripe, chewy tannins. BH 92-95 (1/2016): (from a 1.13 ha parcel in Mazoyères that abuts the Route des Grands Crus.) A more deeply pitched and notably earthier nose also displays plenty of sauvage character. This gamy element continues onto the concentrated medium weight plus flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel despite the evident muscularity of the austere and explosive finish. This is very Mazoyères in character yet it is a bit less rustic than usual. Worth a look provided that you have the patience to cellar it. Drink 2029+. |

| JM 96-96 (11/2018): This is Mazoyères really but Cyprien Arlaud thinks he makes it like a Charmes, with quite late picking for tannin ripeness. In fact there are three picking dates according to the age of vines (25 to 75 year old) and some whole bunch vinification. Dense black purple colour and a richer attack to the nose. There is a solid succulent chunk of flesh, red plus fresh black fruit, an oaky aspect behind, very long finish, needing more time. Tasted: November 2018. |

JD 96 (11/2020): Partially destemmed and brought up in 20% new French oak, the 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a smoky, powerful bouquet of mulled black cherries, mulberries, candied violets, licorice, and forest floor. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, gorgeous wine with silky tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, plenty of structure, and a great, great finish. This is seriously good juice that's going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. (Drink between 2023-2043) VM 94 (11/2022): The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a sensual nose with vivacious red berry fruit, orange pith and light tertiary scents, becoming more and more loamy whilst retaining delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, creamy in texture that belies the structure underneath. Judiciously spiced towards the finish with just a very subtle menthol note, this is a classy offering. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. (Drink between 2026-2048) Neal Martin. JM 93 (9/2022): A deep and slightly darker purple, with more reduction on the nose. The fruit builds impressively behind. When the reduction lifts, as I think it will, this will be a wine of great joy. Dark strawberry notes at the back of the palate and a ripe sensuality at the long finish. The reduction just takes the edge off at the moment. Drink from 2032. |

| JM 94 (9/2023): The most youthful colour amongst the Charmes-Chambertins, a fresh crimson purple. VM 94-96 (1/2023): The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a little more "gourmand" on the nose, cohering with time in the glass, loamy, almost peaty aromas emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-honed tannins. Lovely symmetry here, with a slight creaminess in texture towards the finish, where it feels very persistent. This is a lovely Charmes-Chambertin that should evolve wonderfully in bottle. Neal Martin. JM 93-95 (11/2022): A fine red purple colour. A light reduction on the nose. There is quite powerful fruit for the vintage, allied to Cyprien’s refined style, slightly rougher tannins, whether an aspect of Gevrey or fractionally lighter maturity. Precision at the back, a fine intensity of fresh raspberry, and the requisite length. Drink from 2028-2034. BH 90-92 (1/2023): A more deeply pitched combination offers up notes of plum, wild dark cherry and plenty of earth. The succulent and solidly powerful medium-bodied flavors are more muscular though not nearly as refined, all wrapped in a detailed, dusty and moderately austere finale that isn't quite as well-balanced. The palate is beautifully balanced with filigreed tannins, perfectly pitched acidity, a sense of cohesion from start to finish and an irresistible sense of energy on the finish. VM 95-979 (1/2023): The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru is very convincing on the nose, a mixture of red and black fruit, forest floor, hints of crushed limestone and orange zest. So much vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with beautifully integrated oak, fine-grain tannins, taut and linear with a sublime, quite persistent finish that you just want to keep drinking again and again. Outstanding. Neal Martin. JM 91-94 (11/2022): A bright brisk crimson colour. The fruit on the nose has a little more energy, probably a touch riper than Chatelots. Beautifully balanced on the palate where the riper fruit is matched by fine acidity. There is almost a velvet touch to the texture, while the purity remains deeply impressive. Drink from 2026-2033. BH 90-93 (1/2023): Strikingly pure, airy and distinctly cool aromas include those of essence of red cherry, plum, violet and a whiff of anise character. The beautifully textured and highly sophisticated flavors coat the palate with dry extract on the sneaky long finish. This is a seriously pretty wine though it will need to add depth to merit the upper end of my projected range. Drink 2031+. |

VM 89-92 (1/2016): Healthy dark red. Lower-pitched on the nose than the Blanchards owing to an element of musky reduction. Smooth and rich but much less forthcoming than the Blanchards despite possessing a thicker texture. This wine will rely more on its sizable tannic structure than on its acidity for longevity. This parcel, located in a cold terroir close to Mazoyères, was picked six days later than the Blanchards and Millandes. Just a touch dry on the back end in the early going. Stephen Tanzer. BH 90-93 (1/2016): (from 30+ year old vines.) A notably sauvage nose displays an abundance of earth and underbrush on the cool, ripe and admirably pure black cherry and cassis aromas. This is also firm, intense and serious with robust medium weight flavors that terminate in a moderately rustic and austere finale that delivers excellent depth and length. This is terrific but note well that unlike the Blanchards it's going to require plenty of cellar time. Drink 2029+. Outstanding! |

BH 90-92 (1/2016): Reduction. Here too there is fine volume and concentration to the round but muscular middle weight plus flavors that possess more volume but less minerality on the delicious and supple if mildly rustic finish. I very much like the balance and overall depth and this is a wine that should be approachable young yet reward 12 to 15 years of cellaring. Drink 2026+. VM 90-92 (1/2016): (the Arlauds have gotten this fruit from 60-year-old vines through a fermage arrangement since 2004): Good bright red. Lively aromas of black raspberry, spices and violet. Juicy, fruity, spicy and fresh; very ripe but not a fleshy style. Finishes with noteworthy verve and punch, and the spine to reward aging. This dark clay and calcaire soil would probably be great for Chardonnay, noted Cyprien Arlaud. Stephen Tanzer. WA 90-92 (12/2015): The 2014 Morey St Denis 1er Cru les Blanchards demonstrated more fruit intensity on the nose compared to the 2014 Millandes out of barrel: wild strawberry, raspberry and a touch of cassis. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry with sappy ripe black fruit, more citric than the Millandes with a sense of nascent energy coming through on the finish. This is very fine Les Blanchards and it should age with style. |

VM 93-95 (1/2023): The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru is more introspective at the moment, with fine intensity, the fruit is darker than the Aux Chezaux, with hints of graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, one of the "juiciest" Moreys that I have encountered with candied orange peel and spicebox on the finish. Superb. Neal Martin. JM 93-95 (11/2022): Quite a dense mid purple. The bouquet is beautiful, correctly ripe fruit with an admirable finesse. There is a swell of dark raspberry fruit then a refined mid palate with slightly fresher red fruit, a little hint of spice and quite a long finish. Scaled down from the beauty of the 2019 but sharing the same exceptional qualities. Drink from 2026-2033. |

VM 93-95 (12/2021): The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 1er Cru is very elegant on the nose with brambly red berry fruit, touches of damp loamy soil and just a very slight ferrous aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very focused and pure with just the right amount of acidity. Very harmonious, this is a gorgeous Clos des Forêts that should give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure (at least). Neal Martin. BH 91-93 (1/2022): 9from an enormous 7.1 ha monopole planted in the early 1950s.) Deep ruby. Markedly earthy aromas include notes of garrigue, poached plum, cassis and a smoky component. The rich, energetic and well-detailed larger-scaled flavors evidence solid muscle and power on the moderately rustic, balanced and complex finale. This beautifully long effort is a classic Nuits in style. Drink 2032+. Outstanding! |

| VM 92+ (3/2023): The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru, which was raised in 18% new oak, is a wine that I loved when I tasted it from barrel. Now with a couple of years in bottle, I feel the nose has closed down a little, yet still offers some captivating black cherry, briary and light cassis aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite linear on the entry. It gains weight towards the finish, while retaining satisfying weight. Tasted at the Domaine de L’Arlot tasting at La Cabotte in London. Drink between 2022-2042. Neal Martin. |

BH 91-93 (1/2022): A more elegant and significantly better layered nose reflects notes of various dark berries, cassis, exotic spices and a hint of violet. There is once again excellent vibrancy to the velvet-textured and refined middle weight flavors that also coat the palate with sappy dry extract before terminating in a punchy and surprisingly powerful finale. Worth considering. Drink 2030+. Outstanding! VM 91-93 (12/2021): The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru is very pure on the nose with macerated small dark cherries, violet petals and light aniseed aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, good depth, quite sweet in the mouth and maybe just a little confit-like towards the finish, that does not quite exude the class of their top Nuits-Saint-Georges. Neal Martin. |

WA 94 (12/1992): Similar to the 1990s from one of Pommard's other top producers, Armand and Aleth Girardin, this is a monster wine. It is one of the most concentrated, massive Pinot Noirs I have ever tasted. The wine was bottled with no fining or filtering after it had spent 23-months in small oak casks. The color is black/purple, and the nose offers up sweet aromas of licorice, minerals, and super-ripe black fruits intertwined with the smell of toasty vanillin new oak. In the mouth, there is awesome concentration, a thick, glycerin-imbued, full-bodied, chewy texture, and mouthsearing tannins in the explosively long finish. This should prove to be a monumental Pommard, but prospective purchasers will need to wait 10-12 years for this wine to shed some of its tannic clout. It should keep for 25-30 years. BH 87 (10/2004): Big, indeed huge nose of roasted, ever-so-slightly stewed fruit that is already showing a great deal of secondary development and the muscular, rich, extracted flavors are underpinned by a tough, firm tannic backbone. This is a dramatic bruiser of a wine but it's not clear that it's ever going to harmonize as the finish is completely dominated by the structure and given that the fruit is presently much more advanced than the evolution of the tannins, it's a tough call to say whether the fruit will be able to stand the test of time. Consistent notes. Drink 2007+? |

VM 92 (5/2019): The 2000 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epéneaux has a well defined bouquet with raspberry, crushed strawberry, undergrowth and bay leaf scents. I appreciate the discreet manner in which it gains intensity with aeration, repaying those with the nous to decant this wine. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin: a well proportioned Clos des Epéneaux with a dash of spice enlivening the finish. Returning to the 2001, there is a completeness to the 2000, I find that it has matured better. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting. (Drink between 2018-2028). Neal Martin. BH 88 (9/2008): Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru Red) Here the moderately ripe nose is composed of mostly primary red berry fruit though there are notes of initial secondary development as well as subtle earth and underbrush that are followed by rich, round and serious flavors that display very good length supported by slightly austere finishing tannins that are ever-so-slightly drying. While clearly a very good effort, this is by no means exceptional by the standards of this wine. WA 85 (2/2018): The 2000 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux dates from a different epoch in the domaine's history, and it's a far cry from the graceful, elegantly intense wines being made at the domaine today. Notes of red-black fruit mingle with the strong signature of cedary, minty new oak, introducing a wine which is simultaneously austere and open-knit, carrying too much tannin from extraction and new oak for its own good. |

BH 93 (4/2004): Wonderfully complex aromas of ripe black fruit, crushed herbs and berries with unmistakable earth aromas. Medium-bodied, powerful, concentrated fresh flavors are structured but not overtly tannic with plenty of underlying material and sappy extract. Despite all the sap, this finishes with a distinct note of velvet and fine, sneaky length. This is an extremely impressive effort and worth a special search. WA (88-91) (4/2003): Mint, spice, earth, and black cherries can be detected in the nose of the 2001 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux. A backward wine, it is dense, intense, thickly-textured, and bruising. Its mammoth structure does not conceal the copious, deep black fruits that make up its core. If time civilizes this mouth-staining effort, it will ultimately merit a score on the high end of the attributed range. |

BH 94 (4/2012): (the 5+ ha Clos is composed of approximately 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots; the vine ages run from 18 to 75+ years of age.) This is also quite ripe but agreeably fresh with pure aromas of mocha, red currant, cassis, black cherry, warm earth, violets and subtle spice hints. There is good energy to the intense and admirably rich full-bodied flavors that envelope the palate with velvety sap on the beautifully balanced and impressively persistent finish. I very much like the sense of underlying tension because despite this being a big wine with plenty of concentration, the balance is impeccable and there is absolutely nothing ponderous about this complete effort. There is a hint of backend warmth but otherwise, this is really most impressive. Note however that this very firm effort will require plenty of cellar time. Drink 2029+. Outstanding! WA 94 (4/2012): The 2009 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is flat-out beautiful. Layers of racy, exotic fruit caress the palate as the wine opens up in the glass. The 2009 is quite typical of the year, yet possesses fabulous overall harmony. Although exuberant today, the Clos des Epeneaux will deliver tons of pleasure for many years. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. VM 93 (4/2012): (this was racked only once, a month before being bottled in June of 2011): Good bright medium red. Fresh red berries, licorice and truffle on the nose, complicated by tobacco and iron. Dense, lush and packed with fruit; really showcases the richness of a sunny year without turning heavy. Deep, saline, seamless wine, with a thick, soil-driven finish. Finishes with surprising verve. Very impressive. Stephen Tanzer. |

This is markedly reduced at present so I would strongly suggest decanting it if you are tempted to open a bottle young. Otherwise the supple, round and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors possess a sleek muscularity and solid intensity, all wrapped in a lingering finish that presently displays a hint of an edge that may or may not ever round off. As such my rating is a compromise as I suspect that this will develop even better complexity with age and thus even if the balance isn't perfect, the '14 Clos des Epeneaux should still make for a lovely wine. WA 95 (4/2018): The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux is fabulous, wafting from the glass with notes of wild berries, orange peel, cinnamon, rich soil and espresso. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a lovely line of bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, sappy energy, and terrific depth and tension at the core. This is a great Clos des Epeneaux from Paul Zinetti. BH 94 (4/2018): Here the nose is notably riper than the 2016 version yet it manages to retain good freshness to the pure red berry fruit, earthy, floral and spice-suffused aromas. The decidedly dense, tautly muscular and powerful broad-shouldered flavors are underpinned by notably firm tannins and outstanding length on the beautifully complex finale that exhibits just enough warmth to warrant mentioning. This is quite clearly built-to-age and it's going to need it. In a word, impressive. (Drink starting 2030). VM 92+ (11/2018): The 2015 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru takes time to coalesce in the glass, eventually revealing black cherries, raspberries, autumn leaves and a touch of incense. It is understated and classic in style, but seems to grow with aeration. The crisp palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and plenty of tension – a bit linear and strict at the moment, though I suspect this will age with real style once it has gotten through its adolescence. Do not touch for 5 to 7 years. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2023-2045). Neal Martin. |

VM 94 (10/2019): The 2016 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a classic, undergrowth infused bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of stewed black tea emerging with time, tobacco and rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, succulent and juicy with a fleshy, almost Volnay-like finish that is very appealing. This is a well crafted and comparatively approachable Pommard. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2021-2040). Neal Martin. BH 93 (3/2023): An agreeably fresh and still relatively primary nose freely reveals its aromas of both red and dark berries, newly turned earth and a hint of wood spice. There remains very good vibrancy to the velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors that flash a touch of bracing bitter pit fruit character on the still firm and sneaky long finale. This balanced effort is coming along nicely and while it could certainly be enjoyed now with 30 minutes of air, I would be inclined to hold it for another 5ish plus years first. This balanced effort is coming along nicely and while it could certainly be enjoyed now with 30 minutes of air, I would be inclined to hold it for another 5ish plus years first. (Drink starting 2028). |

| BH 93 (4/2022): A soft dollop of wood frames the distinctly earthy aromas of plum, black pinot fruit and violet that are definitely ripe yet remain nicely fresh. The medium-bodied flavors possess a beguiling texture and fine mid-palate concentration thanks to the abundant dry extract that serves to buffer the firm and vaguely rustic tannic spine supporting the balanced and beautifully persistent finale. This is marked by the warmth of the 2018 vintage yet even so, it manages to remain inviting and refreshing. In a word, excellent. Drink 2030+. |

| VM 95 (12/2021): The 2019 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was bottled in June and July ‘21. Very perfumed and floral scents on the nose, dark cherries, bergamot, damp earth and touches of clove, later hints of violet and blood orange (traits that I observed out of barrel). This is nicely detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a classy espresso-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. Neal Martin. |

BH 92-94 (4/2024): Background hints of wood can be found on the ripe and nicely fresh aromas of poached plum, black cherry and violet. The round, velvety and rich medium weight plus flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration before culminating in a youthfully austere, serious, compact and sneaky long finale. This potentially outstanding effort could use better depth so at least some patience should prove beneficial and 12 to 15 years would be better still. (Drink starting 2034). VM 92-94 (1/2024): The 2022 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was tasted from individual cuvées blended to make a representative final blend. This year, there is 8% vin de presse. It has a backward nose at first, demanding encouragement from the glass. There’s blackberry, raspberry and sea spray, and quite an elevated marine influence compared to recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. Silky smooth in texture with fine delineation, very well-balanced with a touch of white pepper and clove on the finish. This is set to be a generous Clos des Epeneaux, slightly more opulent in style yet with ample freshness and tension. It will require 4-5 years in bottle. (Drink between 2027-2050). Neal Martin. |

BH 91-93 (1/2006): The nose is slightly riper with spicy dark pinot fruit and earth notes leading to rich, sweet, round and powerful flavors packing plenty of punch and volume supported by a dusty and firm tannic spine that is completely buried beneath ample sap. This is impressive and a bit showier than the Clos de Vougeot just now. (Drink starting 2014). VM 89-92 (3/2006): Medium red. Complex, aromatic nose combines currant and tobacco. Then suave and silky in the mouth, with lovely vinosity and cut. Very pinot in texture but not yet especially complex, conveying an impression of greater minerality and higher acidity than the Clos Vougeot. Today Lachaux prefers the Clos Vougeot. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 89-92 (1/2007): This too is heavily reduced and about all that is really discernable is the ample wood spice that can also be found in moderate amounts on the mouth coating and impressively concentrated flavors that are also carrying lots of gas. The finish is chewy, powerful and seriously long and my marks are given on the basis of the quality of the impeccable raw materials as the wine is pretty awkward today. (Drink starting 2013) VM 89-91 (4/2007): Bright, dark red-ruby. Sexy aromas of dark raspberry, flowers and smoky oak, with a touch of reduction. Rich, pliant and sweet, with lovely breadth to its spicy flavors. Boasts plenty of fat but not quite the purity or fine-grained texture of the Proces. But then this is slower to show itself due to the late end to the malolactic fermentation, notes Lachaux. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 89-91 (4/2007): Dark red. Brooding aromas of dark berries, bitter chocolate and game. Broader and more muscular than the Hautes Maizieres but with a bit less lift, clarity and floral character. A fat, chewy style, very Nuits-Saint-Georges in its density of texture. Stephen Tanzer. BH 89-91 (1/2007): Deep ruby. A pungent nose of heavy reduction, wood spice and black cherry fruit leads to earthy, rich, sweet and sappy flavors that are intense, well muscled and concentrated and while there is a trace of rusticity, the tannins are relatively fine. Again, Lachaux has crafted a first rate villages. (Drink starting 2013). |

BH 91 (3/2013): (opened from personal storage). A still wonderfully complex nose of classic Vosne and now fully mature aromas that brim with Asian spices leads to seductive, complex, fine and fully resolved flavors that possess excellent depth on the strikingly long finish. Unfortunately, this seems to have lost some of the vibrancy that it once had and I would be drinking up over the next 5 years or so even if there is no particular rush. Tasted multiple times through 2005 though only once recently but presuming the bottle that I had was representative, this is beginning to decline ever-so-slightly. One other recent bottle displayed noticeable volatile acidity and was not at all like the bottle described above. Drink now. WA 92 (8/1995): Arnoux's top two cuvees should be no surprise to his fans. This estate has always made exquisite Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots, and this vineyard (40-70-year old vines) has once again turned in a DRC-look-alike performance. From its huge nose of Asian spices, smoke, sweet berry fruit, and toast, to its exquisite richness, voluptuous texture, and medium to full-bodied, lavishly fruity, intense finish, this is a remarkably rich, hedonistic red Burgundy. I would opt for drinking it now and over the next 10-12 years. Arnoux's 1993s are unequivocally major successes for the vintage. Before his death, Arnoux and the man currently responsible for the wine-making, Pascal Lachaux, had been voluntarily moving toward less fertilization, higher extraction, and more natural bottling. To their credit, the 1993s were bottled without fining or filtration. These are promising wines, with considerable complexity, well-integrated tannin, and copious quantities of sweet, expansive Pinot Noir fruit. |

A very fresh, juicy Bourgogne Rouge with terrific gulpability. Stephen Tanzer. BH 88 (1/2017): (from 60+ year old vines based on the original pinot fin strain that is so highly regarded today.) A cool, pretty and pure nose reflects notes of various red berries, floral and a hint of earth. There is terrific energy and fine detail to the utterly delicious flavors that possess outstanding depth and length for a regional wine. Recommended. Drink 2018+. Outstanding Top Value! |

Chambolle Musigny |

WA 89 (6/2010): Smoky Latakia tobacco and bittersweet herbs accent the bright, fresh red berry fruit of Lachaux’s 2008 Chambolle-Musigny, with the decadent side of this appellation revealing itself in suggestions of forest floor, well-hung game, and faded lily inner-mouth perfume. Refined tannins underlie a finish tinged with smoke, fruit pit bitterness, and considerable intrigue for a village-level wine. I would expect this to provide admirable satisfaction for at least a half dozen years. BH 87-89 (1/2010): Very mild reduction cannot suppress the otherwise lightly spiced high-toned and cool red pinot fruit that gives way to supple but precise flavors that possess ample verve and a touch of minerality on the dusty, long and linear finish. I very much like the mouth feel here and this has the potential to be a very good villages. Drink 2014+. VM 87 (3/2011): Good medium red. Pure aromas of blackberry and blueberry lifted by mint and menthol. Juicy and supple, with moderate intensity and ripe, harmonious acidity. Nicely balanced wine with a savory finish featuring slightly dry tannins. Pascal Lachaux believes that 2009 will be a "mid-term vintage," while the 2008s "will be good early and late" and may never shut down. |

BH 92-94 (1/2014): (from vines next to the wall by Grands Echezeaux; 40% whole cluster) Relatively heavy reduction renders the nose unreadable. There is excellent richness, size, weight and power to the medium weight plus flavors that brim with mouth coating dry extract that buffers well the firm tannic spine on the strikingly long finish. This is austere but not really rustic and should amply reward mid to long-term cellaring. Drink 2027+. VM 91-93 (1/2014): (50% vendange entier): Bright medium red. Candied red cherry and redcurrant aromas are accented by pepper and fresh herbs. Juicy, spicy and bright, showing lovely cut and energy to the red fruit and mineral flavors. The youthfully firm tannins are a bit tough today but the finish displays attractive floral lift. |

BH 93-95 (1/2012): (from a .53 ha parcel) A fresh but quite restrained and noticeably cool nose of herb and stone-infused wild red berry fruit aromas precedes impressively intense, powerful and agreeably rich medium-bodied flavors that ooze a fine minerality on the wonderfully detailed flavors that explode on the mouth coating and overtly stony finish. Like the Suchots, this is one impressive effort with Outstanding upside potential though note that at least 15 years of cellar time will be required. Drink 2025+. Don't miss! VM 90-92 (1/2012): (from 55-year-old vines picked six days after the Vosne-Romanee premier crus in 2010): Good full, bright medium red. Aromas of small wild dark berries, licorice, coffee and sweet oak perked up by pepper and herbs. Fat and sweet, but without quite the definition of the Reignots, Clos Vougeot or Echezeaux. With its creamy, candied qualities and herbal edge, this suggests a wider range of fruit ripeness than most of the other 2010s here. A bit clenched on the back. |

BH 94 (1/2014): (from a .53 ha parcel). An exquisitely fresh and pure nose of cool red currant and mineral reduction slides gracefully into detailed, precise and restrained medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent verve and a taut muscularity. This really brims with minerality on the mouth coating finish that delivers super length. Terrific. Drink 2023+. VM 91-94 (2/2013): Good deep red-ruby. Cool aromas and flavors of raspberry, red cherry and crushed rock lifted by pepper and herbs. Pure, juicy and precise if a bit youthfully imploded, but already showing terrific sappy intensity. Finishes very long and perfumed, with a serious tannic spine. Promises to be Lachaux's best vintage yet for this cuvee, which he initiated with the 2008 after purchasing these old vines from Christopher Newman. |

VM 93-96 (1/2016): (100% vendange entier; 80% new oak): Deep red-ruby. Alluring aromas of black raspberry, licorice and minerals show a noble, deep vegetal nuance that reminded me of a young Romanee-Conti. The youthfully unevolved middle palate displays the depth, pliancy and freshness of the vintage at its best. Finishes extremely long and ripely tannic, with palate-saturating sweetness and mineral pungency. These 90-year-old vines were originally planted by the father of Robert Arnoux, according to Pascal, who added that the estate's vines in Suchots are even older, at 94. Stephen Tanzer. BH 95 (1/2017): (from a .375 ha parcel situated by La Grande Rue.) An even more elegant nose of spicy and floral red and black pinot fruit is nuanced by subtle traces of sandalwood, Asian-style tea, soy and anise. There is fine concentration to the relatively powerful sappy and mouth coating flavors that are shaped by wonderfully fine-grained tannins on the hugely long, balanced and moderately austere finale. This terrific and notably powerful effort is also quite silky yet it should have zero difficulty rewarding at least 15 to 20 years of cellar time. Drink 2029+. |

BH 90-93 (1/2013): A highly spiced nose of both red and black pinot fruit is trimmed in hints of earth and sandalwood. The very generous and impressively rich medium weight flavors are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a beguilingly seductive texture to the lush, balanced and persistent finish. This is first rate as Chaumes rarely possesses this level of potential quality. Drink 2018+. Outstanding! VM 90-93 (2/2013): (racked and sulfited): Good bright, dark red. Raspberry, spices, flowers and licorice on the scented nose. Dense, sweet and creamy, with a dominant flavor of sappy maraschino cherry. Finishes impressively long and palate-saturating, with ripe tannins and good medicinal reserve. Lachaux noted that this cuvee used to be harder, but is very supple in both 2011 and 2010. Excellent potential. |

BH 94 (1/2013): (from a .45 ha parcel situated at the very top of the vineyard.) There is noticeable reduction present so I would strongly advise decanting this if you intend to try one young. Otherwise, there is good richness to the velvety and strikingly well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent density of extract, in fact this is almost creamy at present though I suspect that the mid-palate will tighten up soon on the highly persistent finish. In sum, this possesses simply terrific potential. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! VM 92-95 (2/2012): (just 28 hectoliters per hectare produced, owing largely to millerandage): Vibrant nose offers black raspberry, minerals and bitter chocolate. At once creamy and sappy, with terrific juicy concentration to the black raspberry, violet and licorice flavors. A note of pepper lifts the fruit and carries through the very long, sweet finish. This cuvee is rarely tough in the early going. |

| BH 94 (1/2021): ( from a .45 ha parcel situated at the very top of the vineyard; Les Grands Suchots is the name for the upper portion of the vineyard and was in use by a few domaines up through the 1970s.) A distinctly floral nose offers up a beguiling blend of very ripe red and dark pinot fruit, sandalwood, Asian-style tea and plenty of spice whiffs. There is a highly refined mouthfeel to the rich, suave and super-seductive medium-bodied flavors that tighten up quickly on the balanced and impressively persistent finale. This youthfully austere effort is very Suchots in character and an excellent example that should age gracefully for the next 15+ years. Drink 2033+. Outstanding! |

VM 88 (3/2014): The 2011 Bourgogne is a pretty entry-level offering from Denis Bachelet. Blue/purplish fruit, sweet tobacco and licorice are some of the notes that inform the supple, easygoing finish. This is a terrific wine in its class. (Drink between 2014-2016). Antonio Galloni. WA 88 (2/2014): The entry-level 2011 Bourgogne Rouge has a lovely leafy bouquet with dark earthy fruit that feels natural and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with raspberry and strawberry fruit on the entry, fine tannins and a pleasant supple finish. This is uncomplicated and totally delicious. Drink now-2016. |

WA 88-90 (6/2015): The 2012 Bourgogne comes from two parcels in “Les Pressonnier” and “Les Grand Champs” and sees no new oak. It has a captivating bouquet of brambly black fruit that is very well defined. The palate is well balanced with sappy black fruit on the entry, nicely judged acidity and a natural, pastille-like finish. This is uncomplicated but astutely crafted, downright delicious Burgundy. VM 88-90 (1/2014): A great introduction to the vintage here, Bachelet's 2012 Bourgogne is endowed with superb depth and purity in its class. Red stone fruits, plums, spices, menthol and licorice inform this striking, expressive beauty. There is a surprising amount of structure for a Bourgogne. (Drink between 2014-2020). Antonio Galloni. BH 87-89 (1/2014): There is a gentle touch of wood to the spicy red and dark berry fruit aromas that convey a real sense of earth that carries over to the impressively rich and utterly delicious flavors that despite the obvious ripeness retain a fine sense of energy and freshness on the lingering finish. This is a really good Bourgogne and absolutely worth a look. (Drink starting 2016). |

WA 94 (12/2009): Pre-selection and rigorous sorting appear to have eliminated any negative impact of hail in Bachelet's 2006 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, but with the result that this virtually always intense and well-structured wine from 80 year old vines is even more so than usual. Bitter-sweet herbal, tarry, and almost liqueur-like dark berry concentrates (cassis and black raspberry) – along with low-toned roast meatiness – inform a seamless palate, softer to the touch and with a more restrained impression of acidity than the old vines village Gevrey, yet still plenty of vivacious primary fruit juiciness. Hints of sealing wax and inner-mouth perfume of peony, heliotrope, and rose add intrigue and allure. Resin, iodine, and wet stone convey a sense of depth in the lingering finish, and speaking of "lingering," the empty glass smells so sweetly fruited and floral as well as intriguingly mineral that its perfume alone will seem worth the price of admission. "I was really concerned to retain acidity here," comments Bachelet, who professes to be less than completely happy with some of his wines from the ripest vintages. "I'm looking for a wine with vivacity and equilibrium," he adds, "not a California style." He certainly got a beauty, and you would be well advised to give any bottles 3-4 years rest before following for another half dozen or more. BH 91-94 (1/2008): (from a .44 ha parcel of 90+ year old vines situated directly across from Chambertin; the yields are so low and the vines so exposed that Bachelet says that he always harvests this parcel first.) Despite being harvested first, this is clearly the ripest wine in the range where the wonderfully dense fruit is highlighted by a background touch of wood that continues onto the refined, pure and concentrated flavors that are supported by dense but fine tannins and flat out terrific length. This is a lovely wine in every respect and while not exactly understated, everything does seem to be in perfect proportion. Drink 2014+. |

This was the only wine in the range to display any appreciable reduction along with a background dollop of wood. The velvety and highly seductive medium weight flavors possess an abundance of dry extract that easily buffers the moderately firm tannic spine shaping the lingering and well-balanced finish. VM 91+ (3/2013): Medium red. Deep but reserved nose offers very ripe aromas of redcurrant, truffle, chocolate and mocha. Dense, juicy and youthful; needs time to expand on the palate, but has the integrated acidity and finishing grip to benefit from patience. I'd give this classy, lively village wine a good six years to express itself. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92-95 (12/2011): The 2010 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is a wine of impeccable class and elegance. Layered, nuanced and subtle, the wine literally blossoms in the glass, showing off its incomparable pedigree. Sweet, floral notes appear later, adding complexity to layers of silky, highly expressive fruit buffered by suave tannins. The gracious, aristocratic finish leaves a lasting impression. This is a dazzling effort from Bachelet. Anticipated maturity: 2022-2032. BH 90-92 (1/2012): ( from vines averaging between 60 and 70 years of age.) A slightly more complex if similar nose adds touches of violets and plum to the aromatic mix before introducing vibrant, intense, dense and quite serious flavors that enjoy impressive mid-palate concentration as well as an ample amount of tannin-buffering sap, all wrapped in a lingering and impeccably well-balanced finish. Again, it's rare to see this level of quality for this particular appellation. In a word, terrific. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! |

WA 90-92 (1/2020): The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes soars from the glass with a rich bouquet of cassis, plums and dark berries mingled with notes of rose petal, loamy soil and grilled meats. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and sapid, with fine concentration, ripe tannins and an expansive finish. Broader and more muscular by comparison with the finer-boned, more incisive Evocelles, this is a classic expression of Gevrey-Chambertin. BH 89-91 (1/2020): This is aromatically similar to the Côte de Nuits-Villages except that the sauvage component is even more prominent. The solidly constituted medium-bodied flavors possess an interesting mouthfeel in that it's at once caressing yet markedly powerful, all wrapped in a mildly warm finale. The tannins are firm but well-buffered and this could be enjoyed on the younger side if that's your preference. (Drink starting 2026) VM 89-91 (1/2020): The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes sees 40% new oak. It has a beautifully defined bouquet of pure raspberry preserve, cranberry and floral scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus-fresh opening and marmalade and tangerine notes infusing the red fruit. The pretty, very expressive finish maybe just misses the depth of, say, the 2016. Still, this is a lovely wine. Neal Martin. |

WA 88-89 (6/2010): Smoky black tea, pungent brown spices, and tart cherry inform a Barthod 2008 Chambolle-Musigny of enervating brightness yet incipient textural richness. Tart and pungent in its lasting finish, this will no doubt strike some tasters as leaning toward austerity, but I anticipate an exuberant, highly versatile and stimulating performer at table over the next half dozen years if not longer. “Especially in a challenging vintage," notes Barthod, “my village Chambolle benefits from originating in so many and such diverse locations." VM 87-90 (4/2010): Full, bright red. Pretty aromas of raspberry and flowers. Juicy, intensely flavored and perfumed; with its sappy acidity, this really stimulates the salivary glands. Finishes with suave tannins and noteworthy energy. As strong an early showing for this straight village wine as I can remember. Of course, this wine had the advantage of having been racked at the beginning of September, whereas the premier crus had been racked just a couple weeks before my early November visit. BH 86-89 (1/2010): A more elegant and ever-so-slightly riper nose also displays very high-toned red pinot fruit that is in keeping with the lacy, textured, detailed and minerally middle weight flavors that are racy, linear and precise on the firm and persistent finish. This is not overly complex, at least not yet though this may come with a few years in bottle. Drink: 2013+. |

VM 90 (4/2012): Bright medium red. Wild strawberry, raspberry, mocha and menthol on the full-blown but fresh nose. Silky, sweet and seriously stuffed with fruit. Dense and strong for village wine. Finishes with good juicy length. To drink or age. (Ghislaine Barthod picked early in 2009, and this village wine gives strong evidence that this strategy was a good one.) WA 88-90 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny is a hugely pleasing wine laced with dark red fruit, mint, minerals and flowers, all of which come together with notable persistence. A weightless, effortless wine, the Chambolle impresses for its impeccable balance and lovely sense of harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. BH 87-90 (1/2011): (from 11 different parcels totaling 1.5 ha, scattered all around Chambolle) An ultra fresh, airy, pure and high-toned red pinot fruit nose slides gracefully into detailed and mineral-driven middle weight flavors that culminate in a dusty, mouth coating, balanced and linear finish. This is a classically styled Chambolle of finesse. Drink 2014+. |

| VM 90 (3/2016): Medium red. Musky, slightly reduced aromas of raspberry and spices. Sweet and fine-grained, offering lovely racy acidity that avoids sharpness. Raspberry and mocha flavors are complicated by a mineral touch. Finishes with firm tannins and good lift. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 90-92 (1/2017): (from a .75 ha parcel of 50+ year old vines.) This is almost a combination of the Combottes and Chatelots with its wonderfully layered nose of kirsch, spice, tea, violet and lavender scents. There is once again fine richness to the sappy and palate coating medium weight flavors that possess both a taut muscularity and power that carries over to the impressively persistent finale where about the only nit is a hint of warmth. WA 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes impresses for its classy, elegant personality. There is an airy, weightless quality that is immensely appealing. In many ways, the Charmes sums up so much of what Burgundy is and can be. Layers of fruit literally float on the plate on the inviting finish. This is another fabulous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. VM 92+ (4/2012): Medium red. Reticent nose hints at raspberry, crushed rock and menthol. Quite dry and imploded but juicy and fresh, with lively notes of red berries and olive. Much less demonstrative today than the Beaux-Bruns and more dominated by its structure. Shows good minerality for the year and finishes dry, classy and long. This tight, firmly structured wine will need at least several years of aging. BH 91-93 (1/2011): ( from a .25 ha parcel). An ultra elegant, airy and delicate red berry fruit nose leads to seductively textured middle weight flavors that display moderate amounts of minerality on the pure, long and decidedly firm finish. Like the Fuees, this is a wine of harmony and fine balance. Drink 2019+. Outstanding! |

BH 94 (1/2012): (from a .85 ha parcel). This is also exceptionally fresh and bright with relatively deeply pitched aromas of primarily red and blue pinot fruit that are in keeping with the rich and intensely mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent depth of material on the firm, long and gorgeously balanced finish. This is terrific juice though note that patience is part of the price of entry. A knockout. Drink 2019+. Outstanding! WA 94 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is loaded with class and energy. There is tremendous energy in the glass as layers of dark cherries, mint, graphite, crushed rocks, spices and licorice gain volume and breath through the mid-palate and finish. I very much like the intensity and focus here. The Cras is going to need at least another few years in bottle, but it is shaping up to be truly stellar. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. VM 93+ (4/2012): Good medium red. Aromas of musky raspberry, coffee and earth, with a note of sappy cherry emerging with air. Large-scaled and silky in texture but utterly unevolved today, coming across as dry and uncompromising. This youthfully imploded wine is distinctly linear today and will need extended aging to ripen in the bottle. Strong mineral and menthol notes carry through to the long aftertaste. An austere 2009 with substantial dusty tannins, but built for long life. |

VM 92+ (4/2014): (12.6% after chaptalization): Medium red. Dark berries, licorice and a peppery note on the nose. Concentrated and youthfully tight, with a distinctly pungent quality to its pomegranate flavor. Has power and thrust for a moderately ripe wine. Best today on the juicy finish, which mounts slowly and builds well. This needs at least six or seven years of cellaring. BH 92 (1/2014): (From a .85 ha parcel). A relatively high-toned nose of sour cherry, raspberry, wet stone and hints of underbrush lead to cool, pure and impressively precise flavors that ooze a fine minerality on the delicious and stylish finish. This is a powerful but classy wine with plenty of concentration though note that this will likely need at least 6 years to be approachable and fully 9 to 12 to realize its full potential. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! |

| VM 92 (11/2022): The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is missing some vigour on the nose compared to its peers, pretty dark berry fruit laced with brown spices, yet lacking some vigour and verve. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite structured and Morey-like with touches of graphite towards the finish. This is a little "serious" at the moment and maybe just lacks a bit of persistence, but age should see some melioration. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. (Drink between 2025-2045). | BH 92 (1/2012): (From a .26 ha parcel of 70+ year old vines.) An intensely floral nose with perfumed and pure aromas of red pinot fruit gives way to textured, precise, intense and quite serious flavors that are again built on a base of firm minerality, all wrapped in a dusty, intense and mouth coating finish. This does evidence a touch of austerity but there is so much sap that buffers the structure that it stops well short of being severe. I especially like the impeccable sense of balance as well as the fact that this is very fresh for the vintage. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! |

| BH 88 (10/2006): (.52 ha in both Charmes proper and Mazoyères.) This is also quite aromatically pretty with obvious depth and a mix of game and underbrush aromas but unfortunately, like the Morey, the level of dissolved CO2 is sufficiently high that it detracts from the lovely complexity and fine length the finish delivers. Again, I can't say whether there is a problem with the wine or just this bottle but here I suspect that a few hours of air would go a long way toward curing the hardening effects of the gas. Drink 2010+. |

BH 91-94 (4/2012): A recalcitrant nose grudgingly offers up notes of cassis, plum, black cherry and floral nuances. There is a redoubtable size, weight and power to the overtly muscular flavors that are underpinned by excellent concentration and very firm but ripe tannins that impart a dusty texture to the explosively long finish. Like the Latricières, this seems to have everything that it needs except for first-rate complexity. My score assumes that this will arrive in time. Drink 2025+. Don't miss! VM 91-94 (2/2012): Bright dark red. Compelling nose offers raspberry, blueberry, clove, smoky minerality, coffee and mocha. Highly concentrated and vibrant, with a distinctly saline character leavening the wine's sweetness. The strong brown spice element carries through on the palate. Finishes very long but a bit youthfully brutal, with strong, almost tart acidity. This will need extended aging to come into harmony. |

Pure silk on entry, then remarkably sappy and delineated in the middle, if less expressive today than the 2011 version (it would be a rare treat to compare these two vintages in ten years). For a wine with a serious tannic spine this is remarkably delicate. Finishes with outstanding subtle rising length and exhilarating violet lift. Very pinot fin in its exotic character. Forget about this one for 10 or 12 years. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 95+ (3/2015): Full medium red. Cool, aristocratic aromas of cherry, pepper, espresso and medicinal herbs complicated by notes of game, smoky minerals and crushed stone. Utterly seamless on the palate, showing an exotic fruit quality to the perfumed flavors of red berries and flowers. Boasts wonderful energy for 2012: this really glistens on the palate and on the rising back end. A wine of great definition and grip, finishing with noble, smooth tannins and superb sappy length. VM 94-96 (1/2014): A wine of endless layers of flavor, the 2012 Chambertin Clos de Bèze, wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and pure texture. Sweet tobacco, wild flowers, new leather and succulent red cherries all blossom on the close. The inclusion of 50% whole clusters gives the Bèze gorgeous aromatic lift that works as a counterpoint to some of the richer flavors. An exotic melange of blue and black-toned fruit, violets, spices and menthol all blossom on the finish. I very much like the intensity here. BH 91-94 (4/2014): There is plenty of floral character to the markedly spicy mix of very fresh red berry fruit liqueur aromas that are trimmed in a background application of oak. The cool, pure and restrained middle weight flavors exude a fine minerality that adds lift to the delicious, round and impressively long finish. I like the underlying material and while this is a good deal less complex than several wines in the range, my score offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2024+. WA 91-93 (12/2013): The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru has a perfumed, floral bouquet with scents of black cherries, creme de cassis and minerals that is very attractive, even at this primal stage. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm, introspective opening and henceforth it never really goes out to entertain: broody and saturnine, piqued that it is being viewed so prematurely. Like the Mazis-Chambertin, it needs just a little more warmth of personality to filter through and indeed, returning to my sample after just three of four minutes aeration, there are some interesting spicy notes surfacing towards the finish. Give this grand cru five or six years in bottle. |

| BH 90-93 (1/2011): ( from both Charmes and Mazoyères.) A very ripe nose speaks of mocha, coffee and blueberry liqueur that is followed by rich, intense and dense flavors that possess excellent power and weight as well as a textured mouth feel, particularly on the remarkably persistent finish. This is well made and balanced though I confess that it's riper than I personally prefer. Drink 2021+. |

BH 91-93 (4/2015): (from both Charmes and Mazoyères.) This is also notably floral with its cool mix of red and dark currant aromas that are liberally laced with notes of earth, game and wood nuances. There is fine power, punch and detail to the muscular medium weight flavors that possess an unusually refined mouth feel, all wrapped in a dusty, complex and impressively persistent finish. Good as this is, the Champeaux is just as interesting though in fairness I should note that it doesn't have quite the same size and weight as does the Charmes. Drink 2025+. VM 90-93+ (4/2015): The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin stands out for its intense minerality and energy. Crushed rocks, sage, chalk, spice and dark red stone fruits open up in a deep, powerful Burgundy endowed with notable class. It's pretty clear the 2013 is showing just a bare hint of its potential today. Still, from time to time, the wine's pedigree comes through loud and clear. Bernstein's Charmes is a blend of 60% true Charmes and 40% Mazoyères. VM 90-93 (1/2015): (a 50/50 blend of true Charmes and Mazoyères): Bright, deep red. Distinctly blacker on the nose than the Cazetiers, offering scents of blackberry, violet, chocolate and espresso. Dense, silky and sweet, with lovely energy and underlying minerality to its juicy dark berry flavors. The dusty tannins saturate the plate without introducing any impression of dryness. For a grand cru, this should give pleasure relatively early. |

| BH 92-94 (1/2016): ( from both Charmes and Mazoyères.) Here the wood treatment is less pronounced on the very pretty red berry aromas that are cut with hints of spice, underbrush and an interesting smoked meat nuance. Like many of the wines in the range the medium-bodied flavors possess a really lovely mouth feel that continues onto the refined yet entirely serious finale that delivers outstanding persistence. I very much like the sensation of power without weight that this possesses in spades. Drink 2026+. |

| JM 96-98 (11/2018): Powerful weighty colour. The nose is not there at first, just a sense of weight and wood. Then some delicate dark raspberry notes start to emerge. A little sterner than the lacy grace of Clos de Bèze. Magical and detailed little dark fruits, bilberries, a feeling of very small berries. This wins in the middle of the palate whereas the Clos de Bèze showed better out of the blocks. Dense, darker slightly more concentrated fruit at the back, a little closer to black, then the stems provide refreshment for the finale. Tasted: November 2018. |

| VM 93 (10/2025): The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a light nose with red berry fruit and light tertiary scents. Initially, it suggests a shortfall in complexity and vigour, yet after ten minutes, it coheres nicely and gains bags of charm. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins. Crisp and sapid, this offers tightly coiled red fruit that conveys a sense of energy. Bright and tensile on the finish, this is a Clos de Vougeot that I end up admiring. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2027-2049). Neal Martin. |

| BH 90-93 (1/2023): Here too there is a touch of green tea character present on the spicy and overtly floral nose of essence of red berries, all of which is trimmed in an almost invisible application of wood. The super-sleek medium-bodied flavors possess a satiny texture along with the hallmark minerality of a classic Arvelets, all wrapped in slightly less austere, balanced and sappy finale. This too could use more depth, but everything is in place for it to develop in time. |

| VM 90-92 (1/2019): The 2017 Fixin Les Clos comes from a climat close to the Marsannay border, from one parcel of 1.30 hectares consisting of vines from 10 to 90 years old. It sees 20% new oak. It has an engaging, quite exuberant bouquet of vibrant red fruit infused with hints of violet; the oak is deftly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a little tighter than the Fixin Village and with more backbone and volume toward the finish. Amélie Berthaut told me that she will probably bottle this later than the Fixin Village, and I suspect it will gain a little density by then. One to watch. (Drink between 2021-2029). Neal Martin. |

VM 90-92 (1/2023): The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village has an attractive nose with quite generous red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, hints of violet. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, tensile and citrus-fresh with an orange peel infused finish. Very fine. (Drink between 2024-2034). Neal Martin. BH 88-91 (1/2023): A much spicier though less earthy nose features notes of red currant, cherry and a whiff of herbal tea. The racy, intense and nicely detailed middleweight flavors flash a lovely texture before concluding in a youthfully austere finale that could use slightly better depth. Given the apparent aging curve, more complexity should certainly develop if allowed a few years of cellaring. (Drink starting 2029). WA 88-89 (1/2023): Aromas of red berries, plums and spices introduce the 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village, a medium-bodied, light and perfumed wine that's soft, supple and charming. |

BH 90-92 (1/2021): A notably ripe and markedly spicy nose isn't quite as fresh though it is still quite pretty. The rich, vibrant and solidly constituted flavors possess more size, weight and power though not the refinement on the youthfully austere finish that is sufficiently well-structured that this will need a decade plus to fully resolve the supporting tannins. (Drink starting 2029). VM 90-92 (12/2020): The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Plantes 1er Cru contains 30% whole bunches. This feels quite closed on the nose despite encouragement, unfolding with undergrowth, black tea and dark fruits. Fine delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, fine delineation with a slight piquancy towards the finish. This is a well-crafted Chambolle that will need two or three years in bottle. (Drink between 2023-2040). Neal Martin. |

WA 90-92 (1/2023): Delicate and perfumed, the 2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Plantes exhibits pretty aromas of peonies, red berries, plums and orange zest. Medium-bodied, ample and satiny, with a seamless, melting profile and an expansive, fragrant finish, it will be hard to resist on release. VM 89-91 (1/2023): The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Plantes 1er Cru has a well defined bouquet despite just a touch of reduction, sous-bois scents percolating up with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly lactic entry, harmonious and poised, lightly spiced towards the surprisingly sweet and forward finish. This will need just a few months in bottle. |

| BH 90 (1/2015): A very pretty, fresh and cool nose of ripe red berries and soft spice notes is more deeply pitched than its 2012 counterpart. The elegant middle weight flavors possess a graceful mouth feel along with good richness before terminating in a balanced and lingering finish. The phenolically mature tannins are well-integrated and this wonderfully complex effort should both drink well young but also reward a few years of bottle age too. Recommended. Drink 2016+. A discreet but not invisible touch of wood sets off the more elegant and more complex nose that is composed of notes of red cherry, currant, violet and a hint of spice. The medium weight flavors possess a bit more volume and richness along with fine mid-palate density that coats the mouth on the caressing finish where a hint of bitter cherry arises. A softly spicy and more floral-suffused nose is quite high-toned with its aromas of the airy essence of red pinot fruit and pomegranate. There is equally good vibrancy to the delicious and slightly denser medium-bodied flavors that possess a caressing mouthfeel as well as a sneaky long finish. This pretty, lacy and mineral-suffused effort should also drink well young though I would be inclined to give it a few years of cellaring in the hopes that better depth will develop. Drink 2024+. |

It's often qualitatively close between the Amoureuses and BM but in 2022, the Amoureuses is clearly the better of the two wines. This is not more than moderately ripe but it avoids auterity plus there is so much energy that one just really feels like drinking it. | BH 93 (1/2013): (from a .32 ha parcel.) A wonderfully, even exuberantly spicy mix of red currant, plum and floral nuances gives way to rich, elegant and impressively refined middle weight flavors that possess impeccable balance on the mineral-driven and utterly delicious finish. This understated and beautifully concentrated effort is a stunner of an Amoureuses that possesses a mouth feel of silk and lace. Drink 2020+. Outstanding! |
