WS 93 (12/2010): A beauty, from its haunting aromas of wild cherry, berry, floral and spice to the silky texture and lingering aftertaste. There's a sinewy feel on the finish, ending on sweet fruit and spice notes. Drink now through 2023. 140 cases imported. BH 92-95 (4/2009): This too is mildly reduced, making the nose difficult to accurately read though the lacy, pure and laser-like precision and focus of the medium weight flavors is nothing short of remarkable and here the emphasis on a base of stone is perhaps even more pronounced than in the Taillepieds, all wrapped in a harmonious, understated yet driving finish that does not seem to stop for several minutes. This is a not a big Ducster but for purity of delivery, it's hard to beat and the balance is impeccable. Don't miss! Outstanding! Drink: 2017+ VM 92 (4/2010): Medium red. Darker aromas of black cherry and spices. Dense and spicy on the palate; fuller and sweeter than the Taillepieds but also quite fresh and built to age. This is still a bit stunted from the mise but the substantial dusty tannins display lovely sweetness. Aeration brought impressive early complexity. WA 91 (6/2010): The d’Angerville’s 2007 Volnay Clos Des Ducs is far more concentrated and youthful in aspect than its Champans counterpart, with blackberry, cherry pit, black tea, crushed stone, and iodine combining with relative firmness of texture, but with compensatory richness of beef marrow adding to its darkly-hued, bitter-edged, somber complexity. I suspect that this palate-staining Volnay will keep longer than most of its ilk in this vintage, perhaps 8-10 years. |

| BH 93 (1/2010): A brooding, even reticent but highly complex, layered and refined red berry fruit nose is nuanced by hints of underbrush and fresh earth that continue onto the delicious, intense and sophisticated flavors that display a seductive texture on the mouth coating and explosive finish that is very firmly structured but not hard or aggressive. This too is a wine for the patient as it will require 12 to 15 years to be at its best. |

| BH 93 (4/2009): A superbly elegant and incredibly pure nose that is so fine that it's not even necessary to drink the wine to enjoy it as it's kaleidoscopically broad and deep with a brilliant range of spice elements adding subtlety and fascination to the red fruit and violet aromas that are the perfect complement to rich, full and generous medium-bodied flavors that are a study in class and grace, all wrapped in a finish of impressive persistence. This is delicious and obviously very young but the perfumed nose is almost worth the price of admission by itself. Drink 2017+. Don't miss! |

| BH 91-93 (1/2009): (from a parcel of 1.5 ha of vines planted in 1949.) Mild wood spice frames an elegant and kaleidoscopic nose of high-toned red and black berry fruit aromas liberally laced with natural spices that offer impressive nuance and excellent complexity that introduces supple, finely detailed and beautifully textured flavors wrapped in a dusty, mineral-infused and austere but not hard finish. This is decidedly backward at present and like the Musigny and Clos de Vougeot will require ample cellar time to really blossom. Drink 2019+. |

BH 93 (1/2010): A very high-toned, airy and layered nose of red berry fruit and distinct floral notes, particularly dried red and white rose petal with a touch of lavender, slides gracefully into pure, intense, rich, full and focused middle weight flavors that possess excellent power and punch with ample minerality on the wonderfully long and moderately austere finish. This is an Outstanding effort in the context of the vintage. Drink 2019+. VM 91-94 (4/2009): Bright, deep red. Aromas of raspberry liqueur, blueberry, menthol and musky herbs. Rich, chewy and dry; comes across as quite austere after the last couple of grand crus. But then Jeremy Seysses finds this quality to be reassuring in the context of 2007. "I'm drawn to austerity in this vintage," he told me, adding that he plans to lay down magnums of this wine in his personal cellar, along with the Clos de la Roche and Echezeaux. Finishes with dusty tannins and excellent thrust. |

BH 91-93 (1/2009): A completely different nose that is much more overtly spicy with a beautifully layered nose that offers up notes of red, blue and black pinot fruit with rose petal and violet aromas as well as a hint of crushed leaf and forest floor, a nuance of which is picked up by the rich, full and intense flavors that possess better volume and length. Like the Charmes, this is really quite fine and perhaps a bit more mineral-driven than usual. Drink 2015+. VM 91-93 (4/2009): Bright medium red. Subdued aromas of redcurrant, cinnamon, pepper and sweet oak. Delicate and subtle in the mouth, but with sappy richness and very good verve. Finishes supple and long, with some oak tannins showing. |

| BH 90-93 (1/2009): Here the nose expresses a completely different personality compared to the Brûlees as this is cooler, more discreet and more reserved though there is a similar breadth of spice elements present that clearly identify the wine as a fine Vosne. The linear, direct and more obviously mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors are strikingly energetic and also stain the palate on the lingering finish. Like the straight Vosne villages, this is Cistercian in its restraint at present and wonderfully classy. Drink 2015+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| BH 94 (4/2009): A more discreet and naturally cooler nose of extract of red pinot and blue berry fruit that is also spicy and elegant but here the coolness of the vineyard comes into play in the form of a certain reserve, particularly on the delicious and mineral suffused medium plus weight flavors that possess superb focus and really lovely detail on the layered, wonderfully complex and tautly muscular finish that goes on and on. An impressive Combottes. Drink 2019+. |

VM 92 (3/2010): Good medium red. Subtly complex nose offers cherry, raspberry and minerals. Delivers the sweet fruit of 2007 in spades, with a slightly high-toned quality that adds to its sex appeal (all these 2007s have volatile acidity levels around 0.6, according to Liger-Belair, which helps to explain their expressiveness.) Fat and sexy wine, with a complicating saline nuance. Finishes with sweet tannins and superb length. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91 (1/2010): ( from a .6 ha parcel situated two-thirds in Cruots and the rest in Champs Traversin.) A complex and layered nose of crushed herbs, floral and red berry fruit aromas leads to sappy, dense and powerful flavors that display both power and precision on the muscled, focused and driving finish. This is completely different from the Reignots and does not have the same delicacy or refinement though I would still characterize this as an Echezeaux of finesse. Drink 2017+. |

WS 94 (10/2010): Intense aromas of graphite and mineral make an immediate impact, with black cherry, black currant and spice flavors adding depth and dimension. This has concentration and a juicy texture, pushing the long, peppery aftertaste. Shows fine harmony and expression overall. Best from 2012 through 2024. 281 cases imported. BH 92 (1/2010): (less than 20% whole cluster). An expressive and quite cool nose blends floral notes, discreet wood, spice hints and ripe black pinot and plum that seamlessly intermingle with rich, delicious and impressively concentrated big-bodied flavors that possess really lovely acid/fruit/tannin balance, all wrapped in a complex, serious and palate staining finish. The subtle influence of the stem tannins gives the very rich, indeed almost lush finish an appealing sense of lift. This displays excellent potential to develop over the next 10 to 15 years and it should last 30. Drink 2017+. WA 93 (6/2010): Sweetly perfumed with flowers and with black fruit candies that render a confectionary impression on the palate (and Sylvain Pitiot did not demur from my description: “bonbon-like"), the 2007 Clos de Tart manages to harmoniously integrate vanilla, caramel, and resin from new wood. Even more than in the corresponding 2008, fresh juiciness of cassis and black raspberry and a saliva-stimulating salinity lend this lift and enticement so that it doesn’t become another too-familiar modern-day exercise in mere dark berry jam on a new oaken shingle. Sandalwood and black tea contribute further interest. Judgments will differ depending on the degree to which one is attracted by the style of this polished and persistent confection of Pinot Noir, but it certainly reflects what Pitiot describes as “my intention - and my taste - (namely) always to harvest just before the limiting point of over-ripeness and excess is reached." I would anticipate this showcasing its virtues and Pitiot’s ideal over the next 7-10 years, and doubt that the 2008 will ever be able to compensate for its relatively less charm, seductiveness, or seamlessness. VM 91 (2/2019): The 2007 Clos de Tart Grand Cru was picked at 27hl/ha from September 6 with 13.66° alcohol, and matured in new oak for 18 months. It is consistent with the style of the vintage – relatively light compared to the “grumpy” 2006, offering vivacious cranberry, crushed strawberry and red currant fruit that intermingles with subtle oyster shell aromas. The palate is replete with sappy red fruit and, like before, there is a subtle Oriental element to this 2007: just a splash of sweet and sour toward the fleshy, smooth finish. One of Pitiot’s more approachable offerings. Enjoy this straightforward but enjoyable Clos de Tart over the next decade. Tasted at a private Clos de Tart dinner in London. Neal Martin. |

| VM 93 (3/2010): Bright, deep red. Knockout aromas and flavors of black cherry, black raspberry, crushed stone and smoky minerality. Wonderfully deep, tangy and sweet, with a captivating creamy texture making this deceptively tastable today. Impressive today for its volume, and finishes very long, broad and classically dry, with substantial fine-grained tannins. As delicious as this is right now, its overall balance suggests it will reward a decade of aging. For his part, Mugnier says that virtually every vintage of his Musigny needs ten years in the bottle. WA 90 (6/2010): Mugnier’s 2007 Nuits-St.-Georges Clos de la Marechale elicits aromatic allusions to ripe black raspberry, cedar, cardamom, burley tobacco, nut oils, and game, delivering a similar sense of complexity on a relatively rich if conspicuously tannin-girded palate. The sheer sap and finishing grip in evidence here suggest that one might want to follow the wine for 4-6 years in anticipation that the tannins will refine themselves. VM 90 (4/2010): Good deep red. Blueberry, licorice, brown spices and menthol on the complex nose. Richer and broader than the village wine, with more intense and complex flavors of spicy black and red berries, leather and minerals. Finishes dense, broad and spicy, with substantial fine tannins. An excellent Nuits-Saint-George wine. BH 89 (6/2010): An expressive nose of green apple, white flower and lemon zest aromas trimmed in a deft touch of wood merges into rich, clean and beautifully detailed middle weight flavors that possess a fine sense of underlying tension and punch on the layered and very dry finish that lingers nicely. Lovely and balanced. Drink: 2012+ |

| BH 94 (1/2010): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche.) A magnificently complex nose offers up a mix of both high and medium-toned aromas of mostly red berries but with a panoply of background nuances including leather, tea, underbrush, spice hints, jerky and smoke, most of which transfer to the textured, intense and precise full-bodied flavors that are, somewhat surprisingly, not quite as dense as those of the Clos St. Denis but actually finer (normally it's the reverse), all wrapped in a hugely long and explosive finish that completely coats the palate with extract, indeed so much of it that this does not seem all that structured yet it will clearly need at least 15 years to be at its best. Note that there was a hair of backend dryness in evidence that I am attributing to the recent bottling. Drink 2022+. |

WS 91 (2/2010): A mix of floral, vegetal and spice aromas, followed by cherry and berry flavors, highlight this elegant, even ethereal red, whose flavors are somewhat submerged. Yet this is long and balanced, gaining fruit and flesh with air.—Non-blind 2007 DRC tasting (February 2010). Best from 2013 through 2027. WA 90 (6/2010): The Domaine’s 2007 Echezeaux displays ripe red berry and star anise aromas; a tender fruit character, mingled with a hint of mocha and underlain by subtly saline meat stock on a silken palate, and a finish that preserves just enough of a fresh edge to its fruit to stimulate salivation and the desire for the next sip. Here is a 2007 that remains true to the personality it expressed early on in barrel, albeit with flattering textural refinement and a greater sense of purity. It’s small scale, but only in the non-derogatory sense of chamber music (two words I used to describe it and, amusingly, later heard from de Villaine). I imagine this charmer being best enjoyed over the next 5-7 years. VM 90 (4/2010): Medium red. Very ripe, perfumed nose shows a liqueur-like cherry quality. Sweet and lush but nicely delineated, with surprising energy to the flavors of red berries, pepper and spices. Finishes long and perfumed, with building tannins and lovely red fruit persistence. BH 90 (1/2010): ( approximately 45 year old vines from 2 different climats, 90% of which is in Les Poulaillères and the other 10% is in Clos St. Denis; there was a lot of replanting done here in the decades of the sixties and seventies). A spicy, expressive and expansive nose of red berry fruit, distinct vegetal nuances, freshly sliced fennel and obvious earth notes that transfer over to the detailed, balanced and energetic flavors that possess excellent transparency on the vibrant and mouth coating finish. There is a lingering inner mouth perfume here that makes this quite seductive. Not surprisingly, this changed rather dramatically in the hour that I had to evaluate the '07s and the seemingly lighter weight flavors put on noticeable flesh though the nose slowly closed in on itself. Drink 2017+. |

| BH 92 (3/2019): Fresh and still youthful aromas are composed by notes of cool essence of red berries, earth, spice and a whiff of wood character. The round, supple and relatively forward middle weight flavors evidence plenty of minerality on the focused and sneaky long finish that tightens up noticeably as it sits on the palate. This well-made and utterly delicious effort isn't seductive but I like the delivery and balance and while it could certainly be enjoyed now, I would continue to hold it for up to another decade. WS 95 (4/2010): This muscular red shows macerated cherry and plum flavors, with leather, tobacco and a wild, feral character. Smooth and concentrated, with a long finish of sweet fruit and mineral. A chewy version. Best from 2014 through 2030. 45 cases imported. VM 94+ (4/2010): Good full red-ruby. More reserved on the nose than the Beze, with terrific sappy verve to its aromas of dark fruits, violet, crushed stone, iron and camphor. Juicy, tightly wound and very intense on first pour, but opened spectacularly in the glass to show Outstanding creamy depth without any loss of energy. Today the wine's saline earth tones and minerality have the upper hand over its fruit. There's less easy sweetness here than the Clos de Beze is displaying, but the slow ripening of the vintage is apparent, and the finishing flavors go on and on. It would be a rare (and expensive) treat to try these two wines side by side in 2020 or so. BH 94 (1/2010): By contrast to the Clos St. Jacques and the Bèze, the Cham has already eaten its wood which allows free rein for the spicy, pure, elegant and restrained earthy red pinot fruit with animale hints and ample mineral notes to dissolve seamlessly into dusty, textured, precise and palate staining big-bodied flavors that are exceptionally tight on the linear but hugely long finish. At present, the Bèze appears to have slightly better underlying material but we'll see in time as both are sensational plus the Cham has a long demonstrated ability to add weight in bottle. BH 92 (1/2010): (all from younger vines Musigny). An expressive and relatively high-toned red and blue berry fruit nose mixed with subtle spice and floral notes offers a clear step up in aromatic complexity while introducing rich, naturally sweet, intense and sappy flavors that deliver impressive precision and a particularly seductive mouth feel as there is a velvety quality to the beautifully long, linear and balanced finish. This is not a dramatic wine in the manner of the two that follow but it quietly delivers excellent quality. Drink 2018+. Oustanding! WA 92 (6/2010): Cocoa powder-dusted ripe black raspberry mingles with dark forest floor elements; roasted, subtly caramelized potato skins; and bloody red meat in the fascinating de Vogue 2007 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru. Caressing, rounded richness and sheer generosity characteristic for the entire vintage collection at this address by no means precludes admirable buoyancy and intriguing as well as enticing persistence that compels the next sniff and sip. This should be well worth following for at least 6-8 years, and will in that course of time doubtless more obviously distance itself from the corresponding village-level bottling. But while I may underestimate its longevity, it would I think be a shame if one waited to embrace this Pinot until the youthful bloom was not longer in its cheeks. Unfortunately - a not uncommon circumstance at this address - I was unable to taste the rare de Vogue Les Amoureuses of the vintage. VM 91 (4/2010): (made from the young vines of Musigny; the village wine was bottled in January of 2009 while the rest of de Vogue's 2007s were bottled three months later) Bright red. Darker and muskier on the nose than the Chambolle villages, hinting at blueberry, wild herbs and menthol. Then silky and intense, with more energy and freshness than the village offering. Also more tannic and closed on the back but finishes with lovely cut and lingering blackberry and cassis perfume. I like the wildness here. A very serious wine for aging. |
