JD 93 (4/2022): A wine that I don't get to taste often, the 2019 Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval Blanc is a stunning white that's certainly worth seeking out, and it actually reminds me of the great white from Château Margaux. Vibrant citrus, white flowers, lime, and chalky mineral notes all emerge on the nose, and it's medium-bodied, has terrific purity, bright acidity, and the balance to evolve for over a decade.
VM 91 (2/2023): The 2019 Le Petit Cheval Blanc feels more Sauvignon-driven on the nose, Granny Smith apples and gooseberry. A touch of wild nettle emerges with time. The palate is well-balanced with fine weight, not quite as complex as the best dry white in the flight, just a bit too toasty towards the finish. But there is sufficient length and freshness, but perhaps not one that will cellar as long as others. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Neal Martin. |

Decanter 97 (5/2020): One of the best Cos Blancs for years, this is a real return to form, a great white wine that has presence and impact. Fantastic balance of rich, textured stone fruit with a fresh finish. You'll find salinity, slate texture, jasmine flowers and white pepper spice. It was a warmer year overall than 2017, and the white vines needed rain, which they got eventually but relatively late, meaning half the harvest was done on before the rain and the other half after some freshening rainfall, which perhaps accounts for this unusual but rather beautiful marrying of the two styles. Concentrated, powerful, balanced and complex. I love it. (Drink between 2021-2035)
JA 95 (10/2021): Tasting so good right now, very easy to fall in love with. Here you get texture, weight and purity, striking citrus zest, touch of bitter almonds and smoked tobacco leaf, a wide array of flavours that you can fall into.
JD 94-96 (6/2020): The flagship, the 2019 Château Cos D'Estournel Blanc is a racier white offering lots of beautiful citrus, white flowers, and a salty, mineral-like quality. With beautiful concentration and terrific balance as well as great acidity, it's another fabulous white from this team, if not surpassing the 2018. |

| JA 92 (5/2020): Immediately appealing and enticing with both presence and impact, but also personality and fun, in the Hauts de Smith spirit. Mix of apricot and nectarine with citrus lime and salinity on the finish. Great stuff, easy to recommend. |

JD 96 (4/2022): The flagship white of the château is the 2019 Château Pape Clement Blanc, which is a mix of 46% Sauvignon, 40% Semillon, and the balance Sauvignon Gris. Its light gold hue is followed by a gorgeous perfume of mandarin orange, honeyed grapefruit, white flowers, and chalky minerality. I love its freshness and vibrancy on the nose, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a supple, sexy, opulent mouthfeel, good acidity, and a great finish. It's a beautiful, seamless, complete Bordeaux Blanc that will keep for 15 years or more in cold cellars, although it's stunning even today. The style of the white here today is one of more finesse and elegance compared to the richer, more sexy style of the past.
JS 97 (1/2022): Aromas of green apple, lime, kumquat, fresh thyme, flint, stone and oyster shell. It’s medium-bodied with tangy acidity and a saline, mineral and zesty palate. Vibrant and intense. So much energy and freshness. Lots of vivid acidity. Tight at the end. Give this another three to four years of bottle. |

| VM 98 (2/2022): Tasting the 2019, I noticed that it has a slightly paler hue compared to recent vintages (though I never read too much into the colour of young Sauternes.) For certain, it has a highly-aromatic bouquet that is beguiling in purity, enticing aromas of honeysuckle and saffron, soon joined by camomile, white flowers and orange blossom. It has wonderful delineation and gains intensity with aeration. The palate is supremely well-balanced with fine bead of acidity. Very harmonious and armed with just the right amount of viscosity, this Yquem is surprisingly understated at first but gains presence, offering irresistible flavours of layers of honey, lemongrass, lemon thyme and orange pith. Yquem is so tempting in its youth, but I feel that this vintage will repay those with the nous to cellar for at least a decade. Neal Martin. |
