WA 99 (10/2005): It’s hard to believe the 2003 Syrah Astralis Vineyard could be better, but it offers riveting richness, intensity, purity, and equilibrium. Structurally, it is similar to the Piggott Range, revealing abundant amounts of sweet, ripe tannin, and huge extract, richness, and depth. Meant for true connoisseurs who are willing to forget it for 5-8 years, it represents what Roman Bratasiuk and Clarendon Hills do so well ... show respect for the great traditions of France, but recognize the extraordinary raw materials that emerge from old vines planted in McLaren Vale. This fabulous wine offers both power and elegance, and showcases the extraordinary talent of Roman Bratasiuk. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. VM 94 (8/2005): Opaque ruby with a violet rim. Full-throttle, liqueur-like aromas of raspberry, black cherry, blueberry, mocha, coffee, violet, licorice pastille and exotic Asian spices. Dense and thick yet fresh, exuberant and high-toned in flavor, showing every imaginable berry note and an impressively deep, velvety texture. Finishes bright, pure, fresh and very long, with fully buffered tannins and exotic, sexy oak spices lingering. |

VM 89+ (8/2003): Medium red-ruby. Expressive nose melds raspberry, currant, smoked meat, truffle and espresso, with a very ripe smoky element. Sweet but quite firm in the mouth; the bright berry fruit seems a bit youthfully hard, owing to the wines strong spine of acidity. Juicy finish shows firm but fine tannins. WA 88 (8/2003): The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Brookmans Vineyard is a dense, chewy, full-bodied effort revealing plenty of cassis, a multi-layered texture, and moderately high tannin in the finish. Patience will be required as this seems to be a slightly leaner version of Cabernet Sauvignon than the other examples. |

WA 92 (10/2005): The 2003 Merlot Brookman Vineyard (which saw about 40% new French oak) is superb. A strong case can be made that there is no better Merlot being made in Australia. It is a dense, thick, juicy effort offering hints of roasted coffee intertwined with berry fruit and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, long, opulent, and silky, it should be enjoyed over the next 10+ years. VM 90+ (8/2005): Deep red. Aromas of ripe cherry, mocha and roasted coffee. Quite sweet and round in the mouth, showing a sweet, deep cherry flavor complemented by dark chocolate. Here there are none of the green edges found in so much New World merlot. Intense, structured and long, finishing with faintly dusty tannins and a subtle raw meat note coming up with air. |

| WA 93 (8/2003): The 2001 Syrah Moritz Vineyard comes across as a more elegant version of the 2002. It is profoundly concentrated with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, creosote, earth, and background oak. Although fabulously rich and long, it appears a bit undersized next to the 2002. The large-framed 2001 will hit its peak by 2007, and last until 2020. |

$55 |
3 |
|
| |
| WA 93 (8/2003): The 2002 The Laughing Magpie Shiraz/Viognier (93% of the former and 7% of the latter) is the La Mouline of McLaren Vale. An exotic, heady, flamboyantly-styled red, it boasts an inky/purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of lychee nuts, acacia flowers, blackberries, and creme de cassis. Supple-textured and opulent, with pepper, licorice, and blackberry liqueur-like flavors, this beautiful wine is made in a modern, progressive style with terrific fruit intensity along with notions of sweet French oak in the background. It should drink well for 10-12 years. |

WA 92 (10/2004): The classic 2000 Command Shiraz (aged nearly three years in new oak) possesses an opaque purple color as well as aromas of melted licorice, new saddle leather, roasted meats, truffles, black currants, and blackberries. Full-bodied and chewy, with supple tannin and a blockbuster finish, it will drink well for 10-12 years. VM 91 (8/2004): Full medium ruby. Superripe aromas of mocha, game, mulch and eucalyptus; here, too, the oak is less dominant than in past vintages. Huge, broad and mouthfilling, with very ripe, fat flavors of sweet red berries and woodsmoke. Offers impressive thickness and density without going over the top. Fairly high in alcohol at 14.5% but carries its weight reasonably gracefully. A real meal substitute of a shiraz , and quite showy already. |

WA 96 (12/2010): Medium garnet in color, the 2004 Shiraz Command Elderton Estate is a little mute at this stage, revealing subtle to moderate aromas of leather, sandalwood and spice over warm blackberry plus some mocha. Full-bodied with medium-firm fine tannins, complex evolving flavors and a great line of acid, the finish is very long. Give it another year or 2 for the nose to emerge from this closed stage and drink it 2012 to 2022+. VM 92+ (10/2007): Dark purple. Bright red and dark berry scents display impressive focus and clarity, with subtle baking spice and vanilla notes adding complexity. Very fresh-in fact almost painfully young-with nervy raspberry and cherry flavors supported by silky tannins and a jolt of acidity on the back. This opened up a bit with air, but really should be cellared for at least another five years. |

WA 93+ (12/2011): The 2008 Command Shiraz comes from 1894 Shiraz plantings of a single estate owned block of 8 acres. It spends 3 years in 100% new oak, 65% American, 35% French. Deep garnet-purple colored, it displays moderate to intense blackberry preserve and dried mulberry aromas with an undercurrent of anise, Indian spices, yeast extract and black pepper. Full bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth, it has a medium level of velvety tannins, refreshing acid and a very long, very spicy finish. Drink it now to 2021+. JD 93 (6/2011): A step down from the ’06, but still impressive, the 100% Shiraz 2008 Elderton Shiraz Single Vineyard Command delivers a ripe, upfront bouquet of sweet blackberry styled fruits, menthol, spice, and underbrush. This is followed by a full bodied, round, supple wine that possesses excellent balance, sweet fruit, good acidity, and ripe tannin on the finish. Seemingly not as age-worthy as the ’06, this will still drink beautifully for a decade or longer. VM 93 (7/2012): Glass-staining ruby. High-pitched aromas of crystallized black and blue fruits, violet and allspice, with suave vanilla and mocha qualities adding richness. Deeply concentrated dark fruit flavors are impressively lithe and precise, with peppery spice and minerality providing lift. Finishes smooth and sweet, with lingering blueberry and floral pastille notes and striking clarity. Josh Raynolds. |

Amon-Ra Barossa Valley Shiraz |

|
| |
| WA 95 (10/2004): The flagship offering, the 2002 Shiraz, is produced from 90- to 100-year-old dry-farmed vineyards that yielded a microscopic .25-1 ton of fruit per acre. Aged 15 months in 100% new American oak barrels and hogsheads, its inky/purple color is accompanied by tantalizing aromas of charcoal, acacia flowers, blackberry liqueur, blueberries, and cassis. This deep, full-bodied, smoky, rich, full-throttle Shiraz is remarkably well-balanced as well as intense. Give it 1-3 more years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 10-15. |

| WA 93 (10/2005): This dense ruby/purple-colored wine exhibits a sweet nose of vanilla, graphite, blackberry, and cassis. Full-bodied and pure, with decent acidity and a moderately tannic, silky finish, it is accessible enough to be drunk now, but will be even better in 1-3 years. It should last for a dozen years or more. |

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon |
$59 |

|
| |
VM 93 (8/2006): Dark red. Gorgeous bouquet of cassis, red cherry, tobacco, mocha, oak spices and minerals. Deeply concentrated flavors of redcurrant, cherry, licorice, vanilla and cured tobacco are impressively juicy and deep, with a distinct mineral tone adding nerve and focus. This has serious weight but also poise and elegance, like first-class St. Julien but with American oak accents and more power and fruit expression. Should age and improve effortlessly for at least a decade. WA 90 (10/2005): From the cooler climate region of Margaret River, the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, made from 27-year-old dry farmed vines, aged in primarily French oak, and bottled unfiltered, exhibits a dark ruby/purple color in addition to a French-like bouquet of tobacco, cedar, plums, and red as well as black currants. A finesse-styled, slightly austere effort with loads of complexity and stature, it should drink well for 10-15 years. |

WA 93 (2/2020): The 2019 Polish Hill Riesling boasts hints of baby powder and lime alongside green apple and mint on the nose. It's medium-bodied, with a pristine, almost watery feel on the palate, but it simultaneously delivers fascinating intensity of flavor and tremendous length, with a gentle, softly dusty texture on the finish. It should easily cellar for more than a decade. VM 93 (9/2022): Limpid straw-yellow. High-pitched citrus zest and floral aromas and a chalky mineral topnote. Vibrant and sharply delineated on the palate, offering juicy, mineral-laced grapefruit, green apple and honeysuckle flavors that deepen and spread out steadily with air. Shows powerful mineral character on the incisive, impressively long finish, which leaves intense citrus fruit and floral notes behind. (Drink between 2026-2036). Josh Raynolds. |

VM 94 (4/2023): The 2006 Shiraz Hill of Grace is still young and feels far from its peak. It already displays significant volume and rich aromas of primary mulberry, blackberry, clove and cedar in a riper frame that have not yet been fleshed out. The palate also remains a little closed with spicy dark berry fruits wound up in mouthcoating tannins. However, the length and balance are immaculate, suggesting it just needs time. Angus Hughson. WA 97 (4/2013): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2006 Hill of Grace has some oak poking through the red and blue fruit aromas, with underlying toast, marmite and sage hints. Medium to full-bodied, it is a very tight knit and youthful wine with crisp acid, medium to firm, finely grained tannins and a long finish. Drink it 2014 to 2030+. |

| WA 90 (8/2003): The exceptional 2001 Shiraz Old Vine (from 110- and 40-year old vines) was aged 24 months in French and American oak, and bottled unfiltered. A saturated ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of creosote, blueberries, blackberries, melted licorice, and a hint of espresso. Sweet and full-bodied, with copious fruit as well as style and grace, it is tempting to say these wines are too big and rich, but they are controlled, with surprisingly fine definition. This 2001 should drink well for 10-15 years. |

| WA 93 (8/2003): Even better than the Old Vine, is the 2001 Shiraz The Bogan, produced from a 40-year old vineyard situated near the Greenock Creek Winery. Aged in 100% new American oak for 20 months prior to being bottled unfiltered, this is a hedonistic, full throttle, pedal to the metal, top-class Australian Shiraz. Sweet vanilla and caramel notes intermingled with smoky black currant and blackberry fruit jump from the glass of this hedonistic, opulent, voluptuously-styled Shiraz. With decent acidity, ripe tannin, and a layered, blockbuster finish, this stunning effort will drink well for 10-12 years. |

WA 91 (10/2005): The dense ruby/purple-hued 2004 Sarah’s Blend is composed of 62% Shiraz and the rest equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It offers abundant black cherry and cassis fruit in its smoky, earthy bouquet along with hints of licorice, dried herbs, and chocolate. Full-bodied, opulent, fruity, and long with surprising complexity as well as depth, it should be drunk over the next 3-4 years. JD 90 (2/2006): Dark red/purple color and a big nose of dark fruits, gobs of toasty oak, minerals and even some floral/spice notes. Full bodied with low acidity and a nice finish. Delicious stuff and improves with air. VM 85 (9/2005): Deep red. Menthol-tinged cherry and plum aromas, with notes of sweet bay leaf and licorice. Fat, almost oily in texture, with candied dark berry, wild strawberry and cherry jam flavors. The silky, lush finish is weighty, a bit hot and slightly syrupy. Josh Raynolds. |

| WA 96 (10/2006): Named after a mythical monster, the 2005 Shiraz Savitar emerges from rocky, low vigor soils, and was aged for 16 months in primarily new French oak barrels. Dazzling aromas of acacia flowers, blueberries, crushed rocks, graphite, licorice, and espresso roast emerge from this tightly knit but intense, fleshy, rich effort. Its multilayered palate, huge body, sweet tannin, and "monster" finish suggest this brilliant wine will be drinkable between 2008 and 2020. It is a superb example of McLaren Vale Shiraz. |

| VM 94 (9/2022): This poised and elegant 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Margaret River's leading wineries is beautifully expressive of the region and variety. Red and black currant fruit aromas are superbly integrated with fine-grained oak with a cedary lift adding detail. There is good fruit generosity on display for such a young wine matched by palate tension of fresh acidity and chalky tannins behind a long, balanced finish. Classically styled, this will undoubtedly age well. Angus Hughson. |

Bin 169 Cabernet Sauvignon |

WA 97+ (7/2022): Made only in appropriate vintages, and always from Coonwarra, the 2019 Bin 169 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is aromatically reticent at this stage, however the power of the fruit in the mouth in unassailable. It blossoms on the back palate and shows pedigree and impressive stature. This is a supremely elegant wine of poise and detail, couched in a framework of power and dense muscly tannin. We all have our preferences between Bin 707 and Bin 169, but for me, my heart has always been with the 169. I think Cabernet deserves an elegant casing, and that is made from French oak (17 months in French oak, 56% new, to be precise). This is pure, but far too young right now. We know this has decades of graceful development ahead of it. JS 97 (6/2022): Such impressive freshness to the aromas of pure mulberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, redcurrants and a swathe of roasting herbs, such as bay leaf and sage. Iodine and nori, too. The French oak is nicely subsumed already and there’s fruit purity that really sings here. The palate has a wealth of rich and ripe blue and black-fruit flavors with plenty of extract and depth on offer. This is an impressively bold, smoothly honed and focused cabernet. Fine, polished tannins frame the long finish. Drink over the next decade and more. VM 96 (7/2022): The 2019 Bin 169 is a beautifully pristine and pure Coonawarra Cabernet that was matured for 17 months in 56% new French Oak hogsheads. It offers up a classic regional expression. Aromas with pinpoint focus display a breath-taking start with leafy cassis, blackberry and cedar aromas nicely interwoven with high quality oak, extraordinary underlying energy and vitality. A delightful seamlessness between mouthcoating tannins and impressive violet and cranberry flavours follow with impeccable balance also on display. With incredible length, this Coonawarra classic will deliver for many years to come. (Drink between 2030-2050) Angus Hughson. JA 94 (7/2022): As I so often find with Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, the fruit character is intense, cutting right through to the heart of the grape, focusing on cassis, blueberry, liquorice, flint and graphite. In colour this is bright and defined, with vibrant violet edges. Love the peony and rose petal, but the impresson is mainly about depth, purity, with no veil drawn between you and the fruit. Great quality - not the most celebrated Cabernet in the Penfolds range, but it adds content and character to the story of how they approach this grape. Tasted twice. 100% Coonawarra in origin, 100% French oak, 56% new. |

| WA 92 (7/2020): The 2018 Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of fruit from Coonawarra, Padthaway, Wrattonbully, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Robe. Classically built, it begins with scents of mint, cigar box and cassis, later adding nuances of olive and chocolate. It's medium to full-bodied, with a smooth, silky yet unyielding feel on the palate, and it ends in a wash of dusty tannins. While approachable now, cellaring 2-3 years should result in greater harmony, and this admirably concentrated wine appears capable of aging well for more than a decade. |

WA 99 (8/2003): The 1998 Grange will be legendary. A blend of 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, it tips the scales at a whopping 14.5% alcohol. The inky/purple color is followed by an extraordinarily intense nose of creme de cassis intermixed with blueberry and floral notes. As the wine sits in the glass, aromas of meat, plums, and cola also emerge. It is a seamless effort with sweet tannin, well-integrated acidity, sensational extract, and layer upon layer of blackberry and cassis fruit that stain the palate and fill the mouth. Its harmony, freshness, and remarkable length (the finish lasts nearly a minute) suggest an all-time classic. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030. VM 97 (8/2003): Very deep red-ruby. Smoky, deeply concentrated fruit bomb of a nose: blackberry, dark plum, cassis; creamy vanilla and lightly toasty coconutty oak; and ethereal background notes of white pepper, smoked meats, musky spices, tar and licorice. Profoundly concentrated but velvety-smooth and seamless; impressively muscular and thickly coated with oak, and bound by drying, astringent tannins. Without question the most concentrated Grange of all time, utterly steeped in blackberry flavors; a real show pony. It's also the most alcoholic Grange ever made, and at a declared 14.5% does taste warm and spirity - the first Grange to do so. It also ventures to some degree into the realm of currant and prune. No doubt a brilliant wine, but only time will tell if, with its elevated alcohol and its superripe flavors, this 1998 version ranks with the very best Grange vintages. |

WA 97 (2/2014): The 2009 Grange Shiraz is a comprised of 84% Barossa, 8% McLaren, and a little Clare Valley and a little Magill fruit with a small 2% of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. At this youthful stage, this deep garnet-purple colored wine puts forward a vivid expression of blackberry preserve aromas amid underlying cassis, black cherry, spice box, char-grilled meat and chocolate box notes. Surprisingly medium to full-bodied (it smells much fuller!) with taut flavors that are very closed in the mouth, it has firm, chewy tannins to structure through the long and earthy finish. 406 cases imported to the US. Drink it 2018 to 2035+. JS 95 (3/2014): A tiny 2% Cabernet component in 2009, this is sourced from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate and has spent 18 months in exclusively new American oak hogsheads. The depth and complexity on offer is straight up impressive, blue and black fruit aromas unwind, meaty at times, some dark green herbal notes and a cedary layer of oak lurking below. The palate has a core of essence-like flavour with plenty of oak-derived spice framed around blackberry, blood plum and cola. Tannins are smooth and even, flavours are gently glazed around the dark fruit spectrum, some blue fruits too. This is a wistful Grange that, as always, faithfully reflects the vintage. VM 94 (7/2014): 98% shiraz and 2% cabernet sauvignon): Inky ruby. Intense spice- and mineral-accented aromas of cherry pit, blackberry and plum, with smoke and floral qualities adding complexity. Taut and linear on entry, then fleshier in the mid-palate, offering zesty dark fruit and violet pastille flavors and hints of licorice and vanilla. Finishes smoky, spicy and very long, with youthfully firm, building tannins adding grip. In a relatively taut, wound-up style for this wine; by all means give it some age. |

WA 99 (10/2017): Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2012 Grange sports an earthy/meaty nose with notes of tree bark, dusty earth, underbrush and chargrill over a core of dried mulberries and Christmas cake, plus hints of pepper and baking spices. Rich, medium to full-bodied and seductive, it has spicy layers and a long meaty/savory finish. JS 98 (1/2017): A simple split between the Barossa Valley (81%) and McLaren Vale (19%), this has all the hallmarks of a great Grange. Deep and ripe dark-plum and black-cherry aromas lead the nose, and there's plum cake here too that's really ripe and deeply spicy. The 100% new American oak has been thoroughly subsumed below tarry and savory brooding notes of black licorice and olive tapenade. The palate's incredibly poised and has richness with composure driven by tight-knit tannins and plenty of ripe dark-plum and cherry-fruit flavors. It is neatly crafted, powerful yet contained and smoothly rendered into the finish. This is a powerful vintage that has been cleverly polished and tamed in the winery; it will live long. Best from 2025 and for two decades after that. |

WA 100 (10/2017): Remember that old Heinz Ketchup “anticipation” ad from the 1970s? The palate of this 2013 Grange does just that. It makes you wait with so much delicious promise being drip fed into the mouth at first—and then it bursts forth and delivers! JS 96 (10/2017): A good Grange, approachable yet impressive, it is reminiscent of the 2009. Smells of deep ripe dark plum and redder fruits, the oak jumps in and out of the nose, quite rich blackberry compote, dark spices, tar and earth. There’s density and depth in the palate, this embraces the full bodied and fully ripe capacity of the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and Magill Estate fruit. The fruit is persistent, commanding and dense, it delivers power in a more traditional shape. Best from 2022 and two or more decades hence. |

| WA 98 (10/2018): Rich, concentrated and intense, the 2014 Grange delivers exactly what we've come to expect from this Penfolds icon wine. It's full-bodied, velvety in feel and loaded with plummy fruit, framed in vanilla and cedar. Dense, powerful and tannic, it should prove to be long lived, even by Grange standards. Gago doesn't rate the vintage overall that highly, but he says the selection this year for Grange was a bit more stringent and that production levels were just average. There are still over 1,000 cases for the United States. |

JS 100 (7/2019): Much anticipated vintage for Grange and it is a powerhouse of concentration and complexity. Aromas of orange and lemon peel to start, then graphite, blackberries, plum paste, black cherries, boundless sweet oak spice, fresh cedar, tar, mahogany, roasted coffee and chocolate - the list goes on. Such complexity. Classic Grange, offering such deep, dark intensity. The palate has immense richness and depth with a super succulent and very long, fleshy, deeply weighted array of dense, velvet-wrapped tannins that run so long. The fruit flavors sit in the blackberry, blood-plum and blueberry zone with succulent, long and assertive structure, carrying through in an utterly seamless mode. The finish is tightly wrenched, in spectacularly powerful style, locking this wine in for a very long haul. Best from 2030. JD 99 (11/2019): The flagship 2015 Grange is a monster of wine and one of those rare wines that blends power and elegance perfectly. Revealing a saturated purple color, it’s seemingly more forward and seductive than past great vintages, which I suspect is due to the incredible purity of fruit as well as the wine’s flawless balance than any change in winemaking or stylistic shifts. I also think the acidity is healthy, and the 2015 tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol, which is certainly in the sweet spot, if not tame, for beautifully ripe Syrah these days. A blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20 months in new American oak hogsheads, it offers an extraordinary perfume of sweet crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, camphor, Asian spices, licorice, and wildflowers. This is followed by a full-bodied, powerful yet incredibly seamless and elegant Shiraz that has no hard edges, a big, dense mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Coming close to rivaling the 1986, which has always been a benchmark vintage of Grange for me, the 2015 offers a more polished, elegant, approachable style. Vintage comparisons aside, this is a legendary example of Grange in the making. The savvy wine lovers out there will give this 7-8 years of bottle age (I’ll probably be out of bottles by then) and enjoy over the following 2-3 decades. WA 98+ (8/2019): The nose of the 2015 Grange features the wine's characteristic lifted aromas, joined by pronounced American oak influence and bold blackberry fruit, plus hints of red meat, raspberries, asphalt and vanilla. It's dense and concentrated on the palate, full-bodied yet balanced and firm, with a rich, velvety texture and long, plush finish. Don't expect great complexity at this stage—it's much too young to show much more than the primary fruit and oak elements—but this is a Grange that should easily go three or four decades. |

WA 99 (7/2020): The 2016 Grange includes 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and was sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley, with a little bit from Magill Estate, in the suburbs of Adelaide. Aged in 100% new American oak (as always), it offers up trademark lifted aromas plus scents of vanilla, toasted coconut, cedar, raspberries and blackberries. Impressively concentrated and full-bodied, with an extraordinarily long, velvety finish, it's nevertheless reasonably fresh and tight, with decades of cellaring potential if properly stored. Certainly at least on a par with such vintages as 2010 and 2012, the big question is whether it will ultimately reach triple digits. JS 98 (7/2020): This is a very intense Grange with such rich black-fruit, tar and coal-smoke aromas together with iodine and black-olive notes and an array of wild dark herbs. Almost impenetrable dark plums and licorice, as well as bacon fat. The palate has such seamless delivery of intense blackberry and plum flavors with some redder tones emerging, too. The power here is countered by such freshness and an almost elegant feel. This has such impressive, vibrant, long and seamless fruit power. Really is exceptionally complete, but tight, needs time to open. Very enjoyable now, but better after 2023. VM 96 (12/2021): Saturated ruby. Displays highly perfumed aromas of dark berry preserves, cherry-cola, pipe tobacco, smoky oak and vanilla, along with exotic spice and floral topnotes. Smooth, broad and appealingly sweet, intense, spice-laced blackcurrant, cherry, candied violet and mocha flavors show outstanding depth and energy. The dark fruit and floral notes resonate on a strikingly long, seamless finish that features well-integrated tannins and building spiciness. (Drink between 2027-2039). Josh Raynolds. |

Highly pungent, smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of cherry pit, violet candy, cured tobacco, savory herbs, coconut and exotic spices on the kaleidoscopic nose. Shows superb clarity and spicy lift to its spice-laced bitter cherry, cassis, blueberry and floral pastille flavors, which take on black cardamom, menthol and cola nuances as the wine slowly stretches out. Shows superb delineation and spicy thrust on the youthfully tannic finish, which features resonating cherry, blue fruit and floral notes. Josh Raynolds. |

VM 92 (8/2006): Ruby-red. Potent aromas of bitter cherry, pepper, licorice and tobacco show excellent varietal accuracy. Tangy and vibrant, with strong cherry and cassis flavors complemented by subtle notes of minerals, cured tobacco and spicy oak. A focused, youthfully restrained cabernet that has the concentration and balance to reward cellaring. Offers impressive potential. WA 90 (10/2005): The deep ruby/purple-colored 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a restrained, elegant bouquet of black fruits, minerals, and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, with excellent concentration, purity, and texture, it should be consumed over the next 7-10 years. Former winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis have left Shirvington and the wine is now being made by Kim Johnston. Little has changed, although the 2004s appear to be more streamlined and delicate than their 2003 and 2002 counterparts. |

WA 95 (10/2005): The sensational 2004 Shiraz’s inky/purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, blueberries, and creme de cassis. It offers wonderful purity, plenty of stuffing, toasty espresso notes from new oak barrels, admirable intensity, and a tremendous finish. Drink it over the next decade. Former winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis have left Shirvington and the wine is now being made by Kim Johnston. Little has changed, although the 2004s appear to be more streamlined and delicate than their 2003 and 2002 counterparts. VM 90 (10/2007): Dark purple. Ripe blackberry and boysenberry on the nose, with a strong vanillin overtone lending a confectionery character. Sweet dark berry and kirsch flavors teeter toward the liqueur side but are firmed by silky tannins, gaining a pleasingly bitter licorice quality with air. A captivating blend of sweet, ripe dark berry fruit and oak spice, with surprising poise and energy on the close. Not for those with old-fashioned tastes but undeniably alluring, with impressive concentration and a luscious personality. |

It is a magnificent effort boasting tremendous ripeness as well as abundant blueberry and creme de cassis notes intermixed with flowers, graphite, and crushed rocks. With amazing concentration, purity, and richness, but no heaviness (the alcohol is only 14.5%), and a finish that lasts well past a minute, it is accessible now, but should age effortlessly for two decades or more. |

WA 95 (10/2002): The 2000 The Factor (1,000 cases) has benefited from the fact that Powell decided not to produce a Run Rig in 2000. It is a compelling wine of great richness, multiple dimensions, and glorious levels of blackberry liqueur-like fruit intermixed with creme de cassis, melted licorice, espresso, and leather. Sweet, expansive, and opulent, it is a lusty, hedonistic, mouth-staining Shiraz that should drink well for 10-15 years. VM 91 (8/2003): Deep red-ruby. Leathery, herbal, spicy, slightly evolved aromas of small black and red berries, with restrained cedar and vanilla oak notes, licorice, musk and clove. Medium to full in weight, with tannins that are firm but not aggressive. A vibrant core of slightly jammy small berry and plum flavor coats the length of the palate, while the oak is understated and supportive. Finishes spicy and long. Should reach its peak in two to five years. |

The Laird Shiraz (1.5 L) Lightly Scuffed Label |
$1,800 |

| WA 100 (12/2010): The Laird is Powell’s new baby, coming from a single 5 acre / 2 hectare vineyard of Shiraz in the Marananga sub-region planted in the 1960s that recently became available for contracting. This is a very different wine from Run Rig. What is most striking about it is the combination of power and elegance in this first vintage, coming from a very good year in the Barossa. Matured for 3 years in new Dominique Laurent “Magic Casks” (Troncais French oak barriques with thicker staves designed for the long aging of Shiraz), 2005 The Laird gives a deep garnet color and pronounced nose that shows savory and spice notes over the fruit, with aromas of hung meat, Peking duck, fertile loam, underbrush, tree bark, anise, cumin seed, menthol, dried roses and lavender over warm black cherries, crush blackberries and fruit cake. The tight-knit, full-bodied palate is very fine with a high level of silt-like tannins and crisp acid running through the concentrated fruit and savory flavors, finishing very long with lingering earth and spice notes. At 14.8% declared alcohol, this is by no means one of the biggest wines in the Barossa, but it is most certainly one of the best. It’s an absolute joy to drink now but it is recommended readers give it 4-5 years more in bottle to soften and marry and enjoy it to 2030+. |

WA 100 (8/2017): Deep garnet colored with a touch of remaining purple at the rim, the 2012 The Laird is one of those wines you could just go on smelling all day. It opens with a complex perfume of kirsch, dried mulberries, blackberry tart and spice cake over cloves, mocha, dusty earth, incense, star anise, yeast extract and aged beef. The full-bodied palate is drop-dead seductive, unfurling in the mouth to reveal exotic spice, meat, earth and berry preserves layers, supported by firm, velvety tannins and seamless acid. The finish seems to go on forever—and this is exactly what you want it to do. Stunning. VM 97 (10/2017): Inky ruby. Powerful, deep-pitched aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, violet, incense, mocha and Indian spices are lifted by a strong suggestion of smoky minerals. Utterly stains the palate with densely packed blackberry, blueberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that slowly stretch out and become sweeter with aeration. Conveys a distinctly powerful character but comes off elegant, showing no rough edges. The strikingly long, gently tannic finish eventually leaves behind sappy blue fruit liqueur, vanilla and spicecake qualities. (Drink between 2022-2032). Josh Raynolds. |

VM 91 (8/2006): Dark violet. Expressive, open-knit aromas of dark berries, roasted plum, cured tobacco, espresso, rose oil and licorice, plus a sexy oak spice accent (this was raised in 25% new French hogsheads). Broad and luscious, with sweet, deep flavors of blackberry and black cherry liqueur, spicecake and molasses. The smooth tannins are perfectly integrated into the wine's fruit and barely make an appearance until late on the aftertaste. WA 90 (10/2006): The 2004 Shiraz Bad Impersonator (which sees about 25% new oak) reveals a Pinot Noir-like sensitivity. From older vines, it displays a dark ruby/purple color, wonderful elegance, and plenty of creme de cassis, blackberry, espresso roast, and white chocolate notes as well as a hint of barrique. Consume it over the next 5-6 years. |

This layered, full-bodied, powerful (all of these wines have 15-16% alcohol), stunningly complex, rich, impressive Shiraz requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 10-15. Densely packed flavors of candied strawberry and raspberry preserves are given focus and definition by bracing acids and fine tannins. WA 95 (10/2006): Even better than the Harry & Edward’s Garden is the 2004 Shiraz Lily’s Garden from McLaren Vale. With this cuvee, about 25% new American oak is added to the regime of French wood. Full-bodied with stunning, dusty, loamy soil characteristics interwoven with blackberry, cassis, cherry, and plum-like fruit, this rich, pure, intense Shiraz should be consumed over the next 10-12+ years. VM 93 (7/2006): Lily'S Garden Mclaren Vale Saturated violet. Smoky, chocolate-tinged blackberry and cassis on the nose, with accents of vanilla and fresh flowers. Firm and youthful, with dark berry flavors showing impressive sweetness and depth. Gains richness and volume with aeration, taking on a candied plum quality on the finish. Fine-grained tannins come up on the back end. A great combination of structure, power and sweet fruit. This was raised in 23% new American oak hogsheads but the wood influence is subtly sweet and not at all intrusive. |

Deep and chewy, with sappy dark berry flavors and slow-building spiciness. Really fills the mouth, but this isn't exactly heavy, or too sweet. Definitely give this densely packed shiraz some age. Josh Raynolds. WA 92 (2/2009): The 2006 Shiraz Lily’s Garden comes from McLaren Vale. It reveals a complex aromatic array including balsam wood, spice box, violets, earth notes, pepper, blueberry, and blackberry. Layered and rich, it conceals enough ripe tannin to evolve for another 2-3 years. It has outstanding grip, depth, and a lengthy, pure finish. |

On the palate, the wine is tight and coiled, savory, salted and powerful. It's impressive. It lifts through the long finish and introduces some cumin and white pepper to close. There's a Benjamin Button aspect to this wine—it is surprisingly youthful, compact and composed. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. |
