VM 91+ (12/2007): Moderately saturated medium red. Reticent nose hints at red fruit liqueur and marzipan. Sweet on entry, then quite firm in the middle, with fresh acids giving definition and penetration to this rather inexpressive wine. Today this is less rich and sweet than the Barbaresco Asili, but there's enticing ripeness here and excellent lift on the firmly tannic finish. This really went into a shell in the glass and would appear to need at least five or six years of bottle aging. WA 91 (10/2007): Giacosa’s 2003 Barolo Falletto is made in an especially weighty, super-ripe style. It offers notable length but shows the adverse effects of the heat, especially on the finish. The Falletto has shut down considerably since bottling, making it hard to evaluate today. It was much more open when I tasted it last year. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. WS 90 (10/2007): Shows dried cherry and plum character, with just a hint of rose petal. Full-bodied, with very silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Still tight, yet balanced. Needs time to open. Best after 2011. 1,200 cases made. |

Barolo Via Nuova Lightly Bin-Soiled Label |

| VM 93.5 (6/2014): It is fascinating to taste the 2003 Via Nuova next to the Cannubi. While the Cannubi, from south-facing parcels, reflects the richness of the year, the Via Nuova (from what is today called Terlo) is quite a bit fresher and more vibrant, as this site is more sheltered from the sun. Mint, pine, licorice and wild flowers add nuance to the dark fruit, while pretty hints of salinity and firm tannins lend backbone to the finish. The 2003 could use another year or two in bottle, although it is already quite striking. (Drink between 2016-2028). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 93 (10/2007): The 2003 Barolo Le Vigne may have a slight edge over the Cannubi Boschis in this vintage, as the ability to blend fruit from various microclimates was a big advantage. It is a full-bodied, soft-textured Barolo with lively color and plenty of ripe red fruit, menthol and spices. This is an especially fresh, vibrant wine for the vintage, with tannins that are particularly refined. A recent vertical of Le Vigne back to 1995 found the 1995, 1997 and 1998 drinking well and the 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2001 approachable, but still with additional upside potential. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. WS 92 (10/2007): Displays bright berry and truffle on the nose. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a caressing finish. There's just a hint of new wood. Balanced and beautiful. Best after 2009. 1,165 cases made. VM 92 (12/2007): Impressively deep ruby-red color for the vintage. Superripe black fruit, brown spice and tar aromas reminded me of a fresher version of a top Bonneau Chateauneuf. Then sweet and layered in the mouth, with shockingly good ripe acidity for 2003. This boasts a penetrating violet florality I find in very few wines from this hot year. Not yet particularly complex but wonderfully fresh and strong. Sandrone did a second green harvest to remove part of the clusters, then picked slowly during the second week of September, his earliest harvest ever, to eliminate the dried berries. Can this really be better than the Cannubi Boschis? Stephen Tanzer. |

JS 95 (10/2017): This is a special Sassicaia that shows so much richness and density. Layered and ripe fruited. Hints of vanilla and wood. Full body, round texture and intense. Showing beautiful length and intensity. Drink or hold. VM 93 (2/2007): Ample, sweet and expansive, the 2003 Sassicaia offers generous notes of sweet dark fruit intermingled with notes of spices, herbs, earthiness and smoke in a full-bodied, opulent expression of this wine. It is an outstanding effort for the vintage. Some cellaring is suggested although with air this wine is drinking beautifully right now. Antonio Galloni. WA 92 (4/2017): The 2003 Bolgheri Sassicaia is full of unexpected twists and turns. Oddly enough, this vintage offered more overall freshness and balance than the much-celebrated 2004 edition. We all know that 2003 was a very difficult year with scorching hot temperatures that broke all records. Instead of jammy flavors or overt ripeness, this wine has embraced an all-balsam aromatic profile instead. The bouquet opens to dried cassis or red currant with eucalyptus, cola, grilled rosemary and medicinal herb. The tannins are silky and fully integrated within the wine's thick textural richness. There are areas that feel flat and sedate, but this is an impressive effort overall that shows impressive stability considering the challenges of the growing season. WS 92 (7/2006): Lots of raspberry and cherry on the nose. Full-bodied and chunky with lots of fruit and a long, velvety finish. Hints of new wood. Big and juicy Sassicaia. Very well done for the vintage. Best after 2008. 15,000 cases made. |

| VM 94 (6/2014): Leather, iron, smoke, black cherries, plums and menthol wrap around the palate in the 2003 Barolo Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate. A huge, hulking wine, the 2003 boasts tons of depth and pure volume. Although not quite as fresh as the Sarmassa, the Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate boasts striking intensity and more than enough depth to drink well for at least another handful of years. Iron, smoke and tobacco wrap around the pulsating finish. (Drink between 2014-2021). Antonio Galloni. |
