JS 98 (9/2018): Welcome to the topnotch riesling zone! Enormous concentration and drive within a very sleek frame, in which peaches and citrus fruit, together with powerful minerals, ripple like the honed muscles of an Olympic athlete. The finish is enormously long but super-elegant. Drink or hold.
VM 95 (4/2019): The nose is dominated by intimations of red currant, red raspberry, lime and grapefruit; though, to be sure, there are also intimations of marine salinity and crushed stone. Once the wine hits your palate, there is a near-electric spark and a rush of bright juiciness allied to mouthwatering salinity and invigorating crystalline stony impingements. There’s also a suggestion of bittersweet inner-mouth florality more typical for Frühlingsplätzchen. A sense of tightly-coiled energy is allied to silken texture and a sense of buoyancy improbable for such a palpably extract-rich wine of around 12.5% alcohol. The vibrant, refreshing, multi-faceted finish delivers tingling, crunchy fresh fruit and myriad mineral notes, tugging not just on the salivary glands but on the cheeks and mandible. WA 94+ (10/2019): The 2017 Halenberg Riesling GG is deep, ripe and intense on the flinty, still-reductive nose. On the palate, this is a rich and creamy, tight and mineral dry Riesling with lots of salt and tension. It's elegant and salty, fresh and crystalline but also a bit austere at this moment. A classic that needs its time to shine. Be patient! Tasted in July 2019. |

| WA 97 (6/2019): The 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese is intense and concentrated on the nose, with raisin, grapefruit and even vegetable aromas at the moment. This is highly attractive and noble on both the nose and palate. The wine is lush and dense on the palate but highly elegant, crystalline and fine, revealing a highly stimulating, salty-piquant and intensely aromatic and complex finish. This is an outstanding wine, and it's highly digestible. Tasted in March 2019. |

| VM 91 (1/2020): Seldom have I observed such a striking difference between a youthful Prüm Kabinett from Graacher Himmelreich and one from Wehlener Sonnenuhr as in this vintage. Heady honeysuckle and gardenia are accompanied on the nose by very ripe pear and Persian melon, anticipating the inner-mouth perfume and lush fruit that deploy on a glossy, buoyant palate. Pear seed piquancy serves for welcome counterpoint on a finish that is luscious, rounded and highly imposing, if lacking the brightness or energy conveyed at this stage by the corresponding Graacher. A welcome influx of grapefruit serves for brightness and zest on an otherwise creamy as well as delicate palate, leading to a finish impeccably balanced in sweetness and vibrantly as well as lusciously persistent. The satiny but fundamentally firm, indeed, almost implacably dense palate presents a vibrantly tangy welter of citrus with crunchy tart berry and coriander seed, smoky, fusil and otherwise mineral nuances, and striking inner-mouth florality, all underlain by wet stone. | WA 95 (2/2026): The 2017 Maximin Grünhaus Abtsberg GG is another Ruwer Riesling classic that intermingles perfect fruit (and wine) maturity with flinty notes of crushed slate and the typical Ruwer finesse and delicacy. Filigreed yet textured on the palate, this is an elegant, very intense yet also energetic, vibrantly fresh or "mineral" Abtsberg with a long, intense and aromatic finish. It's gorgeous and perfect to drink now. This is part of the Schlosskeller Reserve that the von Schubert family released last year to compensate for the dramatic losses to spring frost in 2024. I rate the wine significantly higher than when it was released for the first time. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2026. |
