On the palate, it has lovely elegance, finesse and purity, and the 42 grams of residual sugar are perfectly integrated. The finish is stimulatingly light and salty. This is a picture book Kabinett. |

| VM 89 (5/2017): This bottling, as usual based in large part on Saarburg and Oberemmel fruit but also incorporating a bit from Wiltingen, delightfully illustrates the bright, animating acidity of its vintage. Fresh apple and pear are laced with zesty lemon and lime and underlain by wet stone on a firm, palpably extract-rich palate. Green herbal pungency and peat-like smokiness lend further interest to an exuberant and refreshing finish. David Schildknecht. |

| VM 94 (5/2017): This sister bottling to the auctioned A.P. #4, harvested the same mid-October day, represents a second fuder from the estate’s sole remaining stand of single-post-trained (Stockkultur) vines, planted in 1958. Müller plans to sell it directly into the trade, probably with an emphasis on restaurants. Bright lime, lusciously ripe white peach, cooling and incisive herbal inflections (mint, lovage, and cress), maritime salinity and wet stone are all announced on the nose, then reconvene on a palpably dense yet alcoholically modest palate. There is a bit more snap, pungency and mineral diversity to this wine’s mouthwatering, vibratory finish than that of the marginally richer and more texturally alluring A.P. #4. | VM 95 (5/2017): White peach, quince and lime dominate on the nose as well as on a luscious, subtly creamy yet insistently bright palate, which is rich in glycerol but with striking buoyancy as well as an underlying firmness that suggests the absence of any superfluous fat. Sweetness, too, is so ideally judged and supportive that it is the last thing one thinks about. Hints of cress, mint, yeast and raw almond serve for simultaneous invigoration and cooling caress. The sole Scharzhofberger Spätlese of the Müller 2015 collection offers a wonderful opportunity to experience this site and estate at their best without having to bid with deep pockets at the Trier auctions. | VM 92 (6/2017): This 8.5 percent alcohol bottling features site-typical prominence of lemon and grapefruit with bittersweet suggestions of citrus peels, cassis and huckleberry. Lithe and polished, it finishes with stimulating brightness, rapier penetration, and prodigious persistence. Sweetness is the last thing you’re apt to think about while drinking it. Time will certainly bring further complexity, though crystalline and alkaline stony notes already lend nearly limitless intrigue. David Schildknecht. |

Keep it for another 5-10 years, though. |

| VM 93 (6/2017): Apple and quince are coolingly laced with mint and wintergreen (decidedly reminiscent of the corresponding Bernkasteler) but also, quite unexpectedly, joined by banana, mango and muskmelon for an unusually exotic expression of Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett that is as luscious in the mouth as it is heady on the nose. Lily and heliotrope contribute to the wine’s head-turning aromatic intensity and their inner-mouth perfume to the allure of a subtly creamy palate. For all of its unusually advanced sense of ripeness for a Kabinett, this projects remarkable delicacy and a focused sense of stone, fruit and floral interface in its lingering finish. (The Prüms are fond of observing that their Wehlener Sonnenuhr is usually slower to show itself than others of their wines, but that certainly isn’t the case with this 2015.) David Schildnecht. |

| VM 97 (11/2017): Lime and grapefruit, crabapple and red raspberry in the nose anticipate the bright, juicy refreshment that then arrives on a gripping, energetic but alluring, satin-textured palate. Not that mineral complexity fails to be anticipated in the aromas. Salts, alkali, iodine and stone engage in kaleidoscopic finishing interplay with intense fruit in a mouthwatering, shimmering, vibratory finish. The sheer sense of energy and penetration here are remarkable. They raised gooseflesh for this taster, and would almost certainly have left my tonsils – if I had any – quivering in synchrony with my tongue. Imagine the future that awaits this wine!
