| VM 93+ (2/2007): Rich golden yellow. Bright, crisp nose dominated by candied peach, lemon oil and acacia honey. The lusciously sweet tropical-fruit palate maintains a remarkable delicacy in spite of the wine's richness and depth. The long, glossy finish is underscored by a refined spiciness. |

| WA 95 (10/2009): Donnhoff's 2007 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese leads with an unusually floral aromatic display, and the palate impression is so honeyed you'd think it were Bienenauslese (selected by bees). There is remarkable density here, with site-typical layering of flowers, orchard fruits, citrus, berries, along with smoky, peat-like, stony mineral suggestions that become more prominent as the wine takes on air. The finish is almost luxuriantly rich by Hermannshohle standards. But I am sure this wine will find more to say with time and not fall silent for 30 years or more. |

VM 94 (2/2012): Rich golden yellow. Luscious aromas of candied pineapple, lemon oil and acacia honey on a bed of smoky botrytis. The succulent weight of papaya fruit is levitated by crisp minerality on the palate. A fine balance of creamy fruit and herbal spice on the seductive, very long finish. WA 93 (12/2011): Smoky black tea wafts over quince preserves and almost overripe pear on the nose and the glossy, subtly creamy, yet bright palate of Donnhoff's 2010 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule. Nut paste and a savory smoked meat dimension contribute complexity to this lusciously lingering Auslese, but one that " like its Brucke counterpart' does not capture the dynamic spirit of the 2010 vintage to quite the extent of its Spatlese siblings, and would benefit (might well, in time) from a bit more focus. Still, this will impress regardless for at least two decades. |

| VM 93 (11/2017): Headily decadent aromas of overripe peach and musk melon, peony and lily set the tone for a creamy, enveloping, lusciously fruit-saturated palate. There is enough fresh fruit acidity and salinity to lend the long finish animation and mouthwatering savor, though for now this misses the dynamic or the focus of its Spätlese counterpart, let alone of the Brücke Auslese. | VM 95 (4/2018): “You had to search all across the surface of Hermannshöhle to find any significant amount of botrytis this year,” explained Dönnhoff, adding that this wine, no less than last year’s remarkable pair of TBAs, was only possible thanks to the much larger share of this site that the Dönnhoffs control since they swapped Kupfergrube for Hermannshöhle with Gut Hermannsberg. Ripe white peach, pear, fig and pineapple colorfully, almost riotously dominate the nose and the luscious, glycerol-slicked, dense yet delightfully buoyant palate. Piquant peach kernel and pear seed supply welcome counterpoint and green herbal notes provide counteracting coolness, while an influx of quince reminds me of this year’s two Spätlesen, though here it takes jellied form. The wine’s high residual sugar is completely tamed, so if “Auslese Goldkapsel” has you imagining something conspicuously sweet, think again. But the taming isn’t thanks to extreme acidity. “You have to be careful that nobly sweet Riesling remains taut [straff] but doesn’t become too harsh [streng],” observed Dönnhoff. “I mean, there are BAs and TBAs nowadays that need decades before they would even become pleasant to drink!” Not a problem here. The finish is sustained as energetically as it is richly. | VM 95 (6/2020): Like its Brücke counterpart, this Auslese reflects genuinely botrytis-free grapes, said Dönnhoff, but ones that were too numerous and too high in sugar to use elsewhere, “and certainly not in the Grosses Gewächs, which would then have ended up with 14% alcohol.” Sea breeze on the nose intimates the sweet-saline savor of raw scallop that emerges on this wine’s lusciously lingering, mouthwateringly umami-rich finish. White peach and quince preserves feature throughout, reinforced on the soothingly creamy palate by nougat-like nut essences. There is an animating, juicy fresh-fruit aspect as well, and a wonderful sense of both focus and transparency to stony and ore-like nuances. (Drink between 2020-2050). Dvid Schildknecht. |

| WA 95 (10/2008): The herbal concentration, tropical fruit ripeness, and oceanic salinity of the 2006 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese leap from the glass. On the palate, this is even more obviously ripe, rich, and honeyed than its Spatlese siblings, with peach, quince, soursop, mango, and nut paste leading into a concentrated and for Hermannshohle unusually ebullient finish. But there is savory mineral and nut oil depth as well as incipient caramelization. As this evolves – and one could happily follow it for two or three decades – more of that minerality and the darker side of the site that are already evident in the dry rendition and only hinted at become evident, and within an hour this was a seething cauldron of complexity. |

WA 96 (10/2009): Gardenia, peony, and resinous herbs in the nose of Donnhoff's 2007 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese give way to a palpably extract-rich palate of vibratory intensity, suffused with stony, saline, and tactile suggestions of mineral matter, yet at the same time rich orchard fruits. If the Krotenpfuhl was painted with water colors, the medium here is definitely oil, exhibiting both dynamic and intricate brush work as well as dense layering. This masterpiece - picked simultaneously with the corresponding Grosses Gewachs - was only beginning to show its depth in the spring and needed almost six months in bottle to really shine forth. Take as long as fate permits you to savor this; I can't imagine it disappointing a quarter century or more from now. VM 93+ (2/2009): Tantalizing aromas of papaya, sweet herbs and incense. Discreet but intense black cherry fruit rises from the mid-palate, accompanied by brilliant acidity. Animated and finely spiced, with a deep, long finish. I may be underrating this. |

| WA 96 (2/2013): A riveting, high-toned aromatic diversity announces the Donnhoff 2011 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese with themes that inform an at once creamy yet subtly tannic and vibrant palate: quince, pear, lychee, nut oils, fusel oils, distilled herbal essences, brown spices, and smoky black tea. This behaves as if a bit of Traminer had been blended-in. The rich nuttiness and glaze of honey as well as sheer succulence of fruit make for a more opulent performance than that of Brucke, but to say that this is less energetic or dynamic would be misleading. Its incessant interplay of elements is utterly kaleidoscopic – just more calmly harmonious than the Spatlese from next door. Like that sibling, this deserves to be followed for a good quarter-century. |

JS 99 (7/2022): This shimmers like gold, and the succulence of this wine makes it extremely hard not to swallow, then to immediately reach for the bottle. Very dense and complex, with a level of energy that makes you wonder where it comes from and how this could be possible. Super-long finish that’s so intense and delicate. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold. WA 95 (8/2022): From the southeast-facing part of the vineyard, the 2021 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese is very clear, pure and flinty on the concentrated nose. Sweet, refined and very elegant on the palate, this is a weightless, saline and filigreed, playful Spätlese with great balance and delicacy. Not dramatic but quiet and in beautiful balance. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. |

| WA 93 (1/2015): Only made in vintages with a high ripeness (a pre-selection of the GG) the 2013 Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Auslese offers ripe and shortly cooked apple as well as pineapple aromas along with some volcanic rocks on the nose leading to a sweet, rich and piquant Riesling which shows its great talents not before the finish which is pure and salty but again sweet and sensual. The finish displays citric flavors and black bread but there is no heaviness or botrytis opulence at all in this wine. |

| WA 94 (12/2011): Picked-out, like its Hermannshohle counterpart, in the last, early-November days of harvest, Donnhoff's 2010 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese gold capsule was, he estimates, "perhaps 50% affected by botrytis, and dry botrytis, no mere rot." Candied lime rind and marzipan; lily and honeysuckle; white peach and salted caramel inform this wine's haunting nose and rich yet buoyant palate, with the mouthwatering savor that characterized the corresponding Spatlese undiminished. This needs some time in bottle to better focus, and it will be interesting to see whether it develops more sense of cut and brightness. But it's already irresistible, and almost sure to prove worth following for a quarter century or more. |

| WA 93 (2/2013): The Donnhoff 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese gold capsule represents a selection of partly-botrytized bunches pulled out before what remained was packed under film to await the first hard frost. Mango and papaya, quince and peach deliver an impression both tropical and northerly, with musky animal and smoky black tea scents adding intrigue, while alkaline, saline, and otherwise maritime nuances lend saliva-inducing counterpoint to this elixir’s sheer richness of fruit as well as its palate’s opulence, oily texture, and honeyed glaze. There is a glowing, soothing yet stimulating harmony to the finish, even if not the animation or spellbinding interactivity of this year’s Donnhoff Spatlesen. I would plan to follow it over the next 20-25 years. Donnhoff doesn’t disagree with me that this is 2011 first and Brucke second. “You can’t heighten the typicity of the site by means of botrytis,” he adds. “That reached its apex already in the Spatlese.” |

WA 94 (12/2011): Green tea, lavender, honeysuckle and framboise distillate penetratingly scent Donnhoff’s 2010 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese, their proxies reappearing, along with fresh lime, red raspberry, and drippingly-ripe pear, on a palate of striking purity, refinement, and levity. To an undertone of wet stone in the finish are added site-typical saline, carnal, and brown butter savor. Look for two decades of bewitchment from this beauty. “When I saw the analyses that came back on this year’s Spatlesen," notes Donnhoff, “I had them run again because I couldn’t believe we had close to 100 Oechsle even on the least of them." VM 90 (2/2012): Subtle bouquet of gooseberry, nut oil and acacia blossom. On the palate, the delicately creamy papaya fruit is counterpointed by citrus and slate. | WA 96 (2/2013): High-toned, distillate-like herbal extracts along with ripe fresh strawberry, apple and quince inform the scintillating nose and electrical charged palate of Donnhoff’s 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese. “We were able to just keep waiting on this site," he explains, “so that even this lightest wine from the Brucke was picked only in the last days of (regular) harvest." Hints of pits and seed, along with black tea, nut oils, zesty citrus, and myriad mineral impingements add to a sense of quickening that goes well beyond mere invigoration in this gem’s strikingly persistent, shimmeringly vibrant finish. I was left with salivary glands palpitating and arms covered in gooseflesh. It will probably be hard to resist such a wine at any point over the next quarter century, but those with the requisite remaining life expectancy should make an effort to defer for the duration the pleasure of at least the last bottle or two. |

| WA 90 (2/2011): Informed by fruit from some moderately steep slopes in the Fruhlingsplatzchen and Halenberg as well from the cool Rosenberg behind the village, the Schonlebers’ 2009 Riesling trocken Mineral manages to maintain a delightful sense of buoyancy even at 12.5% alcohol. This displays a deep sense of salinity one often associates with quartzite-rich sites, and which here threads its way invigoratingly and saliva-inducingly through a stream of lemon, grapefruit, white peach, and red berries. Cooling high-toned suggestions of mint and oregano add to the sense of refreshment in this long-finishing Riesling that ought to perform well for at least the next 4-5 years. |

WA 97 (12/2022): Werner Schönleber served the 2021 Frühlingsplätzchen GG after the Halenberg, which has never been the case here in 20 years, but knowing Werner's passion for the purity and freshness of this terroir, this makes completely sense. I remember I liked the 2019 Frühlingsplätzchen better than the Halenberg when it was young, and also from the 2021 vintage I adore the purity, brightness and flinty finesse of the Frühlingsplätzchen which is definitely the brighter, uplifted and purer Riesling. The finish is enormously salty and savory and reveals lemon fruit bitters on the aftertaste. This is life from stone, and it has a damn serious, very long and saline finish. Natural cork. 12% stated alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022. JS 95 (7/2022): Complex nose of pink and yellow grapefruit, peach and spring flowers. A super-elegant, dry Nahe riesling that marries plenty of juicy fruit with excellent concentration and vibrant minerality that leaps out at you. A slew of wild-berry and rose-hip character adds to the excitement at the dangerously crisp, wet-stone finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. |

| WA 95 (12/2016): Picked on two days in late October, the 2015 Riesling Monzinger Halenberg Auslese is very clear and fresh on the precise, very well defined nose where pineapple, almond cake, flinty and herbal aromas are displayed. The precision is repeated on the palate, which is crystalline but also creamy due to the lush, ripe and bright fruit. The wine displays great finesse and lingering salinity, which is so typical for the Halenberg. This is a delicious, really stimulating Auslese. Total production: 600 liters. |

JS 99 (7/2021): Enormously fine and subtle nose. The ravishing but very delicate apricot aroma pulls you into the profound mineral depths of this dry-riesling masterpiece. The salty minerality at the finish just doesn’t want to stop and gives you a great feeling of how the most dramatic landscapes of this region look. Drink or hold. WA 96 (9/2021): The 2020 Halenberg GG is pure, precise and fresh on the nose that offers flinty notes of crushed stones, herbs and lemons. Crystalline, refined and juicy on the palate, this is a dense and intense, tightly structured and persistently salty Halenberg with fine tannins and great purity. Tasted from a bottle that was opened three days before, the bouquet is deep and intense but pure and salty with ripe lemon and crushed stone aromas. The palate is full, dense and tight, with serious tannin structure and lingering salinity. The combination of both wines is amazing and combines purity and freshness with complexity and elegance. The salty finish is the leitmotiv of all three versions. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in July 2021. |

| WA 90 (12/2016): The 2015 Riesling Monzinger Kabinett is very clear, ripe and spicy on the nose, but it's also piquant in its stoniness. On the palate, it has lovely elegance, finesse and purity, and the 42 grams of residual sugar are perfectly integrated. The finish is stimulatingly light and salty. This is a picture book Kabinett. |

This is a gorgeous, mouth-filling, round, complex and densely woven Riesling with great mineral grip and lingering salinity. A great Halenberg with aging potential that should be enormous. |

WA 96 (4/2018): The 2016 Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese displays clear, fresh and exotic fruit with a highly delicate slate spiciness. Lush and highly elegant, with mouth-filling but highly refined and elegant fruit and very fine crystallinity, this is a terribly fine and filigreed as well as sensual and persistent Helden Auslese. Perfectly balanced, with a mouthwatering and charming finish. Tasted March 2018. VM 91 (1/2018): Very ripe but fresh peach and muskmelon are mingled with pink grapefruit and lightly shrouded in musky, dusty scents. The glycerol-rich, subtly creamy palate is lusciously fruity with the grapefruit serving to enhance an exotic sense of ripeness but also to supply a modicum of welcome citric juiciness and zest. Hints of brown spice add to the allure of an impressively persistent finish, albeit not one exhibiting the clarity, brightness or mineral dimension displayed by the best wines in this latest Schloss Lieser collection. While Haag reports having harvested very little nobly rotten fruit, this wine certainly strikes me as significantly influenced by botrytis, with both virtues and drawbacks. (Drink between 2017-2035). David Schildknecht. |

WA 93 (4/2018): The 2016 Niederberg Helden Riesling Spätlese is clear, fresh and pure but very reduced at this early stage. Lush, intense and racy on the palate, this is a salty-piquant and grippy Spätlese with tension and aging potential. Keep it for 8 to 10 years! Tasted March 2018. VM 92 (1/2018): Mirabelle, pear and white peach on the nose translate into generous fresh fruit juiciness on a polished, silken palate. Honeydew melon adds a ripe and luscious dimension to the fruit as it heads into a sustained, buoyant, slate-lined finish that both soothes and stimulates. The high residual sugar here is entirely supportive and its sweetness unobtrusive. (Drink between 2017-2035). David Schildknecht. |

| VM 95 (7/2019): This issued from the upper reaches of the Abtserde – stony and meager in topsoil – and from fruit roughly 25% botrytized. mirabelle, quince and white raisin soar from the rim of the glass. In the mouth, a satiny feel and a hint of oiliness enhance the sense of jellied and dried fruits. But as with the corresponding Spätlese and “regular” Auslese, bright animation and invigorating tactile stimulation emerge, here in the form of sizzling raw ginger and lime peel. There is an almost severe sense of concentration that translates into a gripping, nearly ineradicable finish, accompanied by vibrancy such as runs virtually throughout the vintage 2017 Keller collection, at whatever level of residual sugar. | VM 94 (6/2017): This represented largely healthy fruit with just a touch of botrytis and a significant share of berries shriveled from the effects of drying wind. A remarkable cooling, minty overtone to the kiwi, white peach and lime is delightfully complemented by the wine’s combination of luscious juiciness with creaminess. This is another Haag performance so buoyant as to seem almost weightless and impeccably supportive in its well-integrated albeit analytically very high residual sugar. The long finish caresses and soothes while delivering such a wealth of primary juiciness that it outright refreshes, a rare virtue when it comes to Auslese. (Drink between 2017-2044). | |
WA 97 (4/2013): The Schloss Lieser 2011 Lieser Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese Long Gold Capsule features nectarine, pineapple and pink grapefruit tinged with liquefied lily perfume, musk and brown spices in a manner that points toward noble, refined botrytis, although its author seeks to assure me that this came largely from tiny, healthy berries. Old-timers might well have called such an elixir a “Goldbeerenauslese” – Haag is reminded of its similarly healthy 1997 counterpart – and it’s certainly golden in more than one sense. Hints of nectarine skin and grapefruit rind lend welcome, subtly tart and piquant counterpoint on a luscious and creamy, not to mention virtually weightless palate, while a pure rivulet of fresh fruit juices and a streak of salt serve to guarantee that this remarkable libation’s prodigious persistence goes beyond mouthwatering and into the realm of mouth-agape drooling. Try to experience it soon, and again between 2025 and 2040. VM 92 (1/2013): Vivid aromas of kiwi, toasted almond and lime oil, with a hint of brown-spice botrytis. Polished, elegant papaya fruit shows very good verve and flavor intensity. Mineral salts and sweet herbs join in a finish animated by a keen blade of slate. Joel B. Payne. |

| VM 92 (6/2017): Mirabelle and Persian melon mingle with lime and grapefruit on an attention-getting nose and a luscious, ultra-buoyant, glycerol-rich, subtly creamy palate. While harboring only 7.5 percent alcohol (a bit more, granted, than the corresponding 2014) and hence residual sugar in the mid-80s, this manages to balance perfectly, with the impression of sweetness entirely supportive of the vivid fruit flavors, and the brightly sustained, mouthwateringly tangy finish transparent to crystalline stony nuances. What fun this is going to be to follow! (Drink between 2017-2034). David Schildknecht. |

| VM 93 (6/2017): Like the corresponding Niederberg Helden, this reflects air-dried, healthy berries plus only a modest quotient of botrytis. Apple jelly and quince preserves are laced with vanilla and lime in a performance at once creamy and animatingly juicy. Hints of heliotrope waft across the nearly weightless palate, and the long finish, unusually for an Auslese, refreshes even as it soothes, revealing crystalline stony impingements. (Drink between 2017-2042). David Schildknecht. |

| VM 91 (6/2017): Apple garlanded in heliotrope and lily-of-the-valley makes for a heady, head-turning nose that translates into a satisfyingly juicy and seductively liquid floral impression on a creamy palate. Like the corresponding Juffer-Sonnenuhr, this finishes at once soothingly and refreshingly, not to mention with impressive persistence, though for now at least it doesn’t reveal quite that wine’s sense of transparency to subtly stony nuances. It's medium-bodied and has a crystalline, focused mouthfeel, perfect balance in its acidity and sweetness, and a great finish. It will benefit from a year or three in bottle and keep for at least two decades. (Drink between 2026-2047) |

| VM 89 (5/2017): This bottling, as usual based in large part on Saarburg and Oberemmel fruit but also incorporating a bit from Wiltingen, delightfully illustrates the bright, animating acidity of its vintage. Green herbal pungency and peat-like smokiness lend further interest to an exuberant and refreshing finish. David Schildknecht. |

Lush and precise, with lingering salinity and mineral expression, this is a complex and structured Scharzhofberger Kabinett with great aging potential. Tasted in June 2019. Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spatlese AP 35671420311 |
$99 |

|
| |
| WA 91 (12/2011): Almost severe in its sense of overt, palpable density, the Le Gallais 2010 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spatlese resembles a reduction of fresh apple, cherry, and purple plum laced with lemon, and tartly chewy from fruit skin. Despite its amazing sheer concentration, I didn’t find this wine particularly suggestive of botrytis. “That’s not what you’d say if you had seen the grapes,” remarks Muller with a laugh. That noted, he adds – which I did observe – that its personality is what one would have expected knowing the vintage-typical, freakishly high dry extract and acidity it harbors. An almost flinty as well as wet stone cast contributes to this Riesling’s memorable if far from charming persistence. I suspect it will be long-lived, but whether it will gain allure I won’t try to predict. |

| VM 93 (9/2024): Produced in tiny quantities, the 2021 Spätburgunder R was harvested in Siebeldingen. The fruit is from the Sonnenschein Grosse Lage, including declassified GG barrels. It was aged for 16 months, mostly in used pièce. Earth, smoke and lifted berry have a lovely notion of crushed, dried herbs. The palate is ripe, smooth and full of red berry, almost with a touch of berry compote. The body is concentrated despite its svelteness. What is astonishing is the wine’s aromatic subtlety and very deeply scented nature. The tannins are refined, fused and polished. Exquisite. (Bone-dry) (Drink between 2026-2046). Anne Krebiehl. |

| WA 91 (6/2009): Musk melon, peach, black currant, and botrytis-inflected suggestions of caramel, white raisin, and pungent spice fill the nose from Prum’s 2007 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese. A considerable measure of yeasty and CO2-engendered aromas needs to clear off before this really begins to show its formidable stuff. Creamy in texture and quite unlike the corresponding Spatlese, it displays more than enough energy, concentration, and sheer length, but needs time to harmonize and focus. |

| WA 92 (12/2010): The Prum 2009 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese mingles spiced apple, papaya, pink grapefruit, cassis, and white raisin in a lush, creamily-textured, pungently botrytis-tinged performance full-throated from nose through peacock’s finishing flourish, and hard to beat for sheer diversity and audacity of fruit. If you’re looking for nuance of for characteristics that might be described as in any sense “mineral,” then perhaps in a dozen years you’ll find them here, otherwise search elsewhere. But in reality this is a wine that deserves a long time in the cellar and is apt to retain and add to its present virtues over a 30 year period. |

| WA 91 (2/2012): Smoky black tea, cinnamon spice, and candied lemon rind in the nose of Prum’s 2010 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese lead to a palpably dense, chewy yet glycerin-rich palate of spicy intensity and intriguing pungency but lacking the levity, clarity, or succulence that characterizes other wines in the present collection (and in particular the corresponding Spatlese). As this takes on air, it continues to prickle and tingle both aromatically and on the palate in a way that confirms the impression of more significant and marginally less pure as well as less subtle botrytis than found in most of its siblings. Still, this is a strong-finishing Auslese that I suspect harbors the multi-decade potential one anticipates from its genre at this address. And indeed, if it weren’t for the prestigious address, my slight reservations might seem quibbles. |

| WA 93-94 (10/2008): The Prum 2006 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule introduces a note of caramel, here with heady over-ripe pear, gardenia, and a Chartreuse-like aura of herbal and floral distillates. Amazingly honeyed and rich yet light to the touch, this is possibly a somewhat more obvious wine than the auction lot of Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese, but also a more concentrated as well as more botrytized one. Expect it to be worth cellaring for four decades. |

WA 95 (3/2016): The gold-capsuled 2014 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese GK (AP #18) represents a botrytis selection and offers highly delicate fruit and flinty-slate aromas, where tropical fruit aromas mingle with wet stone flavors. The attack on the palate is racy and piquant; the wine is complex and very pure, highly elegant and finesse-full, yet intense and concentrated, with ripe pineapple flavors and a pure, salty, very mineral finish. This is highly delicate Riesling with a complex terroir expression. VM 95 (11/2016): This non-auction gold-capsule bottling delivers a multifaceted nose featuring candied lime peel, apple and quince jellies, heliotrope and an intriguing meld of yeasty stale bread, florally honeyed and subtly truffly manifestations of botrytis. The creamy, expansive palate reprises all of the aforementioned elements, but also introduces generous parallel juiciness of fresh apple and lime. Displaying wonderful lift and delicacy, the lusciously lingering finish is transparent to stony, crystalline and floral nuances. David Schildknecht |

| WA 97 (4/2018): What a fantastic bouquet! The 2016 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Gold Capsule is super deep, intense and precise on the nose where flinty/stony notes and very fine (and slightly spicy) raisin and grapefruit aromas are displayed. Rich, lush and super sexy on the palate, with highly delicate but intense and persistent fruit and very fine salinity, this is a gorgeous Auslese from the winner of the 2016 vintage chez Prüm: Graacher Himmelreich. This gold-capsuled Auslese (AP 10 17) is rich, finessed and almost weightless in its intensity. The salty and piquant acidity is alive and kicking. You can hardly produce a better Auslese in this delicate and filigreed style. |

| WA 93 (2/2012): A Prum 2010 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese A.P. #17 allies ennobled richness of vanilla- and honey-tinged apple and alluring creaminess of texture to juicy vivacity of citrus; low alcohol levity; and transparency to nuances of honeysuckle and heliotrope perfume, crushed stone and brown spices. The palpably high extract here and hint of chewy fruit skin do not detract from an overriding sense of polish and buoyancy. While its at once soothing and stimulating long finish is ravishingly long, it will take time for this Auslese to reveal what is probably an advantage in nascent, nuanced complexity vis-a-vis the corresponding Bernkasteler. Time will as always be on its side, and I would not recommend seriously tucking into bottles of this for at least 12-15 years, with expectations for it to hit age 40 acting youthful. (I did not have opportunity to taste a corresponding auction cuvee, A.P. #27.) |

WA 94 (4/2013): A yeasty, smoky prickle as well as the effect of dissolved CO2 causes the nose to wrinkle from a glass of Prum’s 2011 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese A.P. #18, but behind that are heliotrope and lily-of-the-valley along with ripe apple, pear and melons that in turn inform a delicate, subtly creamy palate of striking transparency to stony, crystalline, alkaline and smoky black tea and liquid floral nuances. This shimmers and excites even as it soothes in a lingering, uplifting, glowing finish. It will certainly merit attention for the better part of a half century. VM 91+ (1/2013): Pale golden yellow. Refined aromas of ripe peach, mango and acacia honey. Creamy and glossy in texture, with a glazed apricot flavor infused with sweet herbal spice. Richer and denser than the spatlese but not obviously better, and long on the finish. |

WA 95 (2/2015): The 2013 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese offers a noble sweet, very fine aroma of wet and flinty stones intertwined with grapefruit and lemon aromas. Lovely sweet and intense, but also delicate on the palate, this medium to full-flavored 7.5% alcohol wine reveals a great elegance and finesse and finishes with delicately juicy, grapefruit aromas. (I tasted AP number #15 14.) VM 93+ (3/2015): Pale golden yellow. Sublime aromas of apricot, white lime and brown spices. In spite of the rich, glossy nectarine fruit, refreshing acidity makes this Auslese appear light and superbly elegant. With a lively spice character animating the long, sweet, delicate finish, this is my favorite of the standard Ausleses. Joel B. Payne |

WA 96 (4/2018): The 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule) is clear, fine and subtle yet concentrated, with vegetal and ripe fruit aromas. Rich, round and piquant, this is an intense and densely woven Auslese (AP 14 17) with a long, tensioned and refreshing mineral finish that lifts the sweet fruit. Gorgeous but made for another decade. JS 96 (6/2018): The 2016 Goldkapsel Auslese from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr is going to be a magical wine in the fullness of time. The bouquet is pure, still fairly primary and utterly classical in depth and proportion, delivering a superb constellation of white cherries, delicious apple, a touch of the yellow plum to come in time, a gorgeous signature of slate minerality and a topnote of apple blossoms. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and precise, with lovely depth, ripe, vibrant acids, great focus and grip and a very, very long, pure and energetic finish. This will need at least a decade in the cellar to start to stir, but it will be a great Goldkapsel once it is ready to drink and will live for a very, very long time! Great juice. 2026-2085+. |

2026-2085+. |

| WA 98 (6/2019): The 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule), AP 17 18, is deep and flinty on the perfectly ripe, intense and tropical-scented nose with its ripe yellow nectarine and peach aromas. The wine exhibits very fine botrytis with crunchy-salty slate features on the palate and is racy-piquant, highly stimulating, crisp and crunchy on the finish, with lingering salinity. This 2017 Sonnenuhr is still very young and needs time to calm down but is still lush and fresh, and the bottle will be emptied before you have even thought about the wine. It's very long, complex and tensioned—just fabulous. Tasted in March 2019. |

| VM 91 (1/2020): Seldom have I observed such a striking difference between a youthful Prüm Kabinett from Graacher Himmelreich and one from Wehlener Sonnenuhr as in this vintage. Heady honeysuckle and gardenia are accompanied on the nose by very ripe pear and Persian melon, anticipating the inner-mouth perfume and lush fruit that deploy on a glossy, buoyant palate. Pear seed piquancy serves for welcome counterpoint on a finish that is luscious, rounded and highly imposing, if lacking the brightness or energy conveyed at this stage by the corresponding Graacher. But give it at least a little time. (Drink between 2021-2034). David Schildknecht. |

| WA 91 (2/2012): Emphasizing the bitter side of the vanilla bean as well as toasted nuts and cyanic apple pit, the Prum 2010 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese A.P. #14 thereby generates a fascinating contrast with its apple jelly and honey richness. Alkaline and wet stone notes - beginning already in the nose - enhance that contrast. Nut oils, honey and apple reprise in a lusciously lingering finish. Less charming, refreshing, exuberant, or focused in finish than the corresponding Graacher, this Wehlener will almost certainly need a longer time to show its true potential; but one can rest assured based on one of Germany’s most certifiable track-records that at least a quarter century of pleasure is in the offing here. JD 92 (5/2019): Revealing a hint of green in its color, the 2016 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is rocking stuff that delivers mouthwatering notes of sweet peach, sugared citrus, and mint in a medium-bodied, off-dry, balanced style. WA 93+ (2/2015): The 2012 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese (AP #10 13) opens with delicate peach, ripe apricot and orange flavors on the nose. Quite sweet, lush and fruit intense, though still pure and delicate on the palate, this peachy flavored wine finishes with a piquant and racy acidity. Aromatically less complex at the moment compared to the Sonnenuhr from Wehlen or the Himmelreich from Graach, but this fine and pure wine just needs some years. VM 92 (12/2013): Pale golden yellow. Lively aromas of peach pit, honeysuckle and candied lemon. Bright and spicy, with sweet, plush papaya fruit showing a velvety texture and a note of creaminess. Herbal essences heighten the pleasing finish. Not a show reserve, but a lovely auslese. Joel B. Payne. |

| VM 97 (4/2019): In no previous vintage has Felseneck found Stromberg breathing down its neck to the same degree; but Schäfer-Fröhlich’s flagship rises to the challenge and once again emerges with top honors. Penetratingly pungent but also hauntingly, bittersweetly-perfumed notes fill the nose: grapefruit, white currant, struck flint, violet and iris. The satiny but fundamentally firm, indeed, almost implacably dense palate presents a vibrantly tangy welter of citrus with crunchy tart berry and coriander seed, smoky, fusil and otherwise mineral nuances, and striking inner-mouth florality, all underlain by wet stone. Savor of fleur de sel improbably paired with bitter chocolate, adds to a mouthwatering, vibratory, dizzyingly complex finish that just won’t quit. David Schildknecht. |

JS 99 (9/2019): Very pure slate here, this is something unique. The elevated, steep and stony site has such strength of character, delivered with such purity. Gun smoke, gunflint and very fine fragrance with a streak of fresh lemons. So fine. The palate has a super fine and elegant feel, floating ballet-like over the palate. Such elegance and power. The finesse and length is really ethereal. Yellow-grapefruit juice and pith here. Wildly succulent at the long, salty finish. What a thrilling wine. Drink or hold. WA 97 (10/2019): Bright and clear fruit aromas intermix with flint stone and herbal aromas to open the spectacularly deep, dense and coolish, extremely mineral 2018 Felseneck Riesling GG. Very intense, rich and concentrated on the silky-textured and refreshing palate, this is a crystalline and silky yet dense and enormously mineral, tightly woven, dry and piquant Riesling with remarkable tannin structure and sustainable salinity. This Felseneck needs years to open up and also the biggest glass you can find. Tasted during the VDP Grosse Lage preview in Wiesbaden in August and two times at home in October 2019. VM 96 (6/2020): Zesty lime and struck flint pungency are joined on the nose by intimations of white currant and white peach as well as of alkaline, saline sea breeze. The midpalate is firm but polished, dense and full (at around 13% alcohol), yet exhibits an improbable sense of lift, with crunchy, taut-fruit freshness and cheek-pinching brightness such as one seldom witnesses from this vintage. The superbly focused, preternaturally persistent finish is vibrantly tongue-tingling, crushed-stone-saturated, mouthwateringly saline and refreshingly loaded with primary juiciness. Yet for all of the brightness on display here, there are also resonant, deep, piquant nuttiness and a low-toned stoniness suggestive of tectonic tension. “Based on my impressions in autumn [2018],” said Fröhlich – lovely though he claimed the harvest was – “you could never have gotten me to believe that we would end up with a wine like this.” And talk about the scarcely believable: Fröhlich left out of this cuvee a roughly thousand-bottle lot of Felseneck that was due to spend a second winter in cask, and which he thinks represents his finest dry wine of the vintage. Like its Stromberg counterpart but to an even more striking degree, this bottling illustrates a point on which I elaborated when introducing the Schäfer-Fröhlich 2017s – namely, that Bockenau’s top slopes take a back seat to none on the Nahe.David Schildknecht. |

| WA 98 (8/2022): Coolish, pure and bright, with dashes of lemon oil on crushed blue slate rocks, the 2020 Felseneck GG is a Riesling to wake you up with its tart perfume. With lemon leaves and some sur lie notes on the nose, this is always precise, fresh and flinty and a picture-book Riesling for the favored style of Tim Fröhlich. This is as if the ocean was rushing over this vineyard that bears so much salt and power. In this case, its power and concentration shout for a carafe or a decade of bottle aging. For now, I prefer the purity and crystallinity of the Stromberg, but in the long run, this Felseneck could be unrivalled. |

| WA 99-100 (8/2022): The 2021 Felseneck GG is a wild expression of crushed flint and slate stones, herbs, green leaves, chamomile and lime zests along with iodine notes of lemon juice. Full-bodied but rich and very elegant on the palate, this is a pure, crystalline, sharp and dense laser sword of a dry Riesling that many might call too ascetic for now, but the richness, intensity, concentration and balance are just perfect to guarantee long bottle aging. The tannins are fine and intermingled with salts and extract, power and richness and the character of crushed stones. Very long, intense, concentrated and rich, this is a legend in the making. | |
| VM 94 (8/2020): Linden, heliotrope, quince and apple in jellied as well as fresh form are effusively evoked on the nose, and the creamy palate offers corresponding billowing inner-mouth perfume, confitured richness but also freshness of fruit, reflecting the healthy and marginally less ripe (i.e., not overripe!) bunches that were included in this en bloc harvest. The lusciously and seductively lingering finish preserves creaminess, refreshing juiciness and floral perfume while introducing an invigorating lick of cinnamon and a nibble of fresh ginger. All of this is underscored by a slightly more prominent sweetness than generally exhibited by Selbach-Oster “Rotlay” bottlings, a phenomenon doubtless attributable to lower-than-usual acidity. But the sweetness suits the wine’s personality, and never dominates. (Drink between 2019-2048). David Schildknecht. |

| WA 94+ (4/2018): The 2016 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese "Rotlay" offers a deep, ripe and concentrated bouquet. Made from partly botrytized grapes, this is a fruit-intense, sweet but stunningly fine and balanced Riesling Auslese with a piquant finish. It is lush and intensely fruity in the aftertaste but also piquant and fine. Highly promising. |

| WA 95 (2/2006): Continuing an approach begun last year with their Auslese from a block called “Schmitt”, the Selbach’s harvested their 2004 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese “Rotlay” – from the best “red slate” parcel in the Sonnenuhr vineyard – in a single, late October picking. This incorporated fruit at different degrees of ripeness and botrytis infection, which would have been, as Selbach points out, “normal practice in our grandfathers’ time.” It would be misleading to say that the harvest was “not selective”, though, not only because imperfect bunches were left behind, but also because of the rigor previously gone into the pruning and green harvesting of each vine according to its abilities. The result is arguably a vivid picture of the site itself. And when one is talking about a site of this stature – sheer slate sheltered by overhanging rocks and facing the reflected heat of the Mosel (which is dammed just above Zeltingen) – it may come as no surprise that the result is one great Riesling. The layering – in both nose and mouth – of white raisin and faintly caramelized apple and dried apricot notes with bright fresh fruit and citrus is – understandably, given the single picking – even more pronounced than in the Schlossberg Auslese, but also more harmonious at this early stage. Amazingly distinct if ineffable layers of minerality emerge as well, along with meaty, musky, animal notes. The awesomely long and multifaceted finish remains both richly creamy and honeyed and also sappy and invigorating to the end, with an almost peppery concentration of mineral, spice and herbal essences. (There is, incidentally, also a “regular” 2004 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese, which I did not taste.) |

Wintricher Geierslay Riesling Sur Lie |

| WA 92 (12/2011): From old vines in an extraordinary site about which I have written in detail in issue 192, Steinmetz’s June-bottled, tank-raised 2010 Wintricher Geierslay Riesling Spatlese Sur Lie boasts a mere 10% alcohol thanks to having left behind 28 grams of residual sugar, which was around ten less than I guessed (and I’m generally pretty good at guessing these things), such is the efficacy of 11 grams of acidity not to mention almost freakishly high extract. But the performance one gets here seems utterly poised and naturally balanced rather than in any way extreme. A seeming suffusion of salt, iodine, shrimp shell reduction, peach kernel, and crushed stone mingles saliva-inducingly with fresh, juicily-refreshing lime, white grapefruit, and white peach on a subtly silken palate, finishing with vibrantly intense mineral and fruit interactivity. This terrific value ought to perform well for at least another 12-15 years. Incidentally, Steinmetz plans to replant parts of the Geierslay that aren’t even in Riesling now with Nik Weis’s Schlangengraben vine selection. |

| WA 92 (4/2017): Thanisch's 2015 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Kabinett is very clear and still reductive on the nose, with flinty sulfur notes, bright fruit aromas and very good definition. Round, lush and juicy but also fine, mineral and salty, this is a delicate, filigreed and elegant Kabinett with a good mineral structure and a mouthwatering salty finish. A classic! |

| VM 94 (5/2022): The 2020 Riesling Kanzemer Altenberg Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs leads with lavender, iris, orange blossom, white peach and lime scents that soar from the glass. The feel is seductively silken, and the mouth fills with luscious pit fruit, animatingly bright citrus, wafting floral perfume, and the sort of mouthwatering animal, mineral and herbal savor akin to raw oyster innards that was also present in this collection’s Scharzhofberger Grosses Gewächs. The vibrant, invigorating finish is bell-clear and focused, while not forgetting Riesling’s fundamental duty to refresh. 5/2022. |

| VM 91 (1/2009): Pale golden yellow. Musky aromas of apricot pit, wild herbs and oyster shell. The smoky, candied fruit flavors are quite creamy but at the same time clear, precise and long. This is deeper than the spatlese but I prefer that wine for its crisp flavors and elegance. Joel B. Payne. |

WA 94+ (1/2015): Lovely pure and mineral on the aristocratic quartzite nose the 2013 Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese offers much more refined fruit aromas (pineapples) than the Rheingau Spätlese Tradition. Picked at 96° Oechsle and bottled with 77 grams per liter of residual sugar and a beaming acidity of almost 10 grams per liter this is a stellar Spätlese with finest Riesling and Gräfenberg flavors on the nose as well as a noble, aristocratic performance on the palate. Full-bodied, sappy and piquant rather than sweet, this is a very precise, elegant and extremely well balanced Gräfenberg ambassador of great finesse. It is lovely to drink now but you better don't drink its huge aging potential away too early. Even for professional tasters it is really hard to spit this Gräfenberg Spätlese that will still fascinate people in 30 or 40 years. VM 92 (3/2015): Enticing aromas of white peach, sweet lime and lemon cress. Succulent nectarine fruit is animated by vibrant, salty minerality. The deep, spicy finish is both alluring and cerebral. In its balance, this is perhaps the purest expression of the 2013 vintage at this estate. Joel B. Payne. |

| VM 94 (7/2018): Lusciously ripe peach mingles with grapefruit, salted caramel and marine minerality on the nose and delicate yet lush, glycerol-rich palate of this formidably-concentrated and impeccably balanced bottling. It comes off as both riper (in effect, more Auslese-like) and more citric than the Turmberg, finishing with terrific energy to accompany its richness. But the hauntingly, intriguingly and flatteringly floral and animal elements that characterize Turmberg at its best aren’t in evidence here. (Drink between 2018-2040). David Schildknecht. |

| VM 91 (3/2021): Peppermint, sage, oregano and a hint of caramelized oak resin accent passion fruit in a powerful aromatic performance. The midpalate is glossy, subtly creamy and open-knit, with a Silvaner-like suggestion of milled wheat adding interest and an unexpected burst of fresh lime lending welcome bright juiciness. Bite and glowing piquancy of caraway, peppercorn, peach kernel and sage serve for slightly rustic grip, augmented by smoky, stony notes of a sort often associated with Forst’s basalt-inflected sites. There is ample finishing juiciness, though overt oak notes slightly detract from the finished wine to a degree that I had not noticed prior to its bottling. (Drink between 2021-2027).
