| VM 89+ (1/2013): Subtle aromas of apricot pit and quince, highlighted by a floral element. Rich, satiny texture supported by fine acidity. The wine's juicy peach, mineral salts and nut oils join the slate on the lingering finish. Joel B. Payne. |

| WA 89 (4/2012): The Busch 2010 Pundericher Marienburg Fahrlay Riesling Grosses Gewachs – while no less full-bodied than its immediate Grosses Gewachs siblings – offers a metaphorically cool performance with its evocations of apple, mint and celery seed. While firm in texture and rather spare in its tart apple skin-tinged, wet stone-lined finish, this retains a very satisfying sense of primary juiciness. Perhaps its 13.5% alcohol – while generating neither heat nor roughness – is working against this really opening-up in its finish; or perhaps more post-bottling time is required. A bottle that had been open for more than two days showed further – smoky, saline – mineral nuances, confirming that this Riesling might be introverted but is no less intriguing for that. I would however want to revisit it in another year or so before hazarding prognostications about its further evolution. |

| WA 90 (4/2012): As in several recent vintages just above the limit of residual sugar for legal Trockenheit but plenty dry-tasting, Busch’s 2010 Riesling Vom Roten Schiefer displays ripe nectarine and peach, making for a more welcoming and succulent performance than that of the corresponding grey slate bottling. Not only crushed stone but also a red slate-typical hint of smokiness – along with a brown spices and a nip of pepper-cress – inflects an invigorating, satisfyingly juicy and persistent finish, setting up a genuinely vibratory sense of interactivity. This should prove delectably versatile over at least the next half dozen years. |

WS 94 (4/2007): Almost racy, this has an edge of acidity that keeps the apple, peach and mineral notes focused and long. Elegant and persistent, with the flavors resonating on the lingering finish. Best from 2009 through 2030. 128 cases imported. VM 93+ (2/2007): Rich golden yellow. Bright, crisp nose dominated by candied peach, lemon oil and acacia honey. The lusciously sweet tropical-fruit palate maintains a remarkable delicacy in spite of the wine's richness and depth. The long, glossy finish is underscored by a refined spiciness. |

WA 96 (10/2009): Gardenia, peony, and resinous herbs in the nose of Donnhoff's 2007 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese give way to a palpably extract-rich palate of vibratory intensity, suffused with stony, saline, and tactile suggestions of mineral matter, yet at the same time rich orchard fruits. If the Krotenpfuhl was painted with water colors, the medium here is definitely oil, exhibiting both dynamic and intricate brush work as well as dense layering. This masterpiece - picked simultaneously with the corresponding Grosses Gewachs - was only beginning to show its depth in the spring and needed almost six months in bottle to really shine forth. Take as long as fate permits you to savor this; I can't imagine it disappointing a quarter century or more from now. WS 94 (4/2009): Bright and expressive, evoking apricot, nectarine and orange, with accents of sweet corn and vanilla custard. If the flavors were colors they would be neon, like a Pucci print. Drink now through 2028. VM 93+ (2/2009): Tantalizing aromas of papaya, sweet herbs and incense. Discreet but intense black cherry fruit rises from the mid-palate, accompanied by brilliant acidity. Animated and finely spiced, with a deep, long finish. I may be underrating this. |

| WA 96 (2/2013): A riveting, high-toned aromatic diversity announces the Donnhoff 2011 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese with themes that inform an at once creamy yet subtly tannic and vibrant palate: quince, pear, lychee, nut oils, fusel oils, distilled herbal essences, brown spices, and smoky black tea. This behaves as if a bit of Traminer had been blended-in. The rich nuttiness and glaze of honey as well as sheer succulence of fruit make for a more opulent performance than that of Brucke, but to say that this is less energetic or dynamic would be misleading. Its incessant interplay of elements is utterly kaleidoscopic – just more calmly harmonious than the Spatlese from next door. Like that sibling, this deserves to be followed for a good quarter-century. |

WA 96 (2/2013): High-toned, distillate-like herbal extracts along with ripe fresh strawberry, apple and quince inform the scintillating nose and electrical charged palate of Donnhoff’s 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese. “We were able to just keep waiting on this site," he explains, “so that even this lightest wine from the Brucke was picked only in the last days of (regular) harvest." Hints of pits and seed, along with black tea, nut oils, zesty citrus, and myriad mineral impingements add to a sense of quickening that goes well beyond mere invigoration in this gem’s strikingly persistent, shimmeringly vibrant finish. I was left with salivary glands palpitating and arms covered in gooseflesh. It will probably be hard to resist such a wine at any point over the next quarter century, but those with the requisite remaining life expectancy should make an effort to defer for the duration the pleasure of at least the last bottle or two. WS 91 (4/2013): Fruity and expressive, with a lush spiciness to the ripe apple and baked peach flavors. Intense glazed apricot and jellied citrus notes linger on the juicy, sumptuous finish. Drink now through 2035. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 56 cases imported. |

| VM 95 (4/2018): The site-typical nose delivers a head-turningly fragrant rush of buddleia and heliotrope, while anticipating the juicy, piquant, crunchy fresh red raspberry, pit-inflected white peach and lime that dominate a silken, almost creamy, yet animatingly bright palate. Inner-mouth perfume rises seductively as fresh ginger adds incisive invigoration and an influx of quince reinforces the sense of richness. On one level, the finish is penetratingly bright and vibrantly animating, preserving invigoratingly piquant hints of seeds and pits. Yet simultaneously it seems to float with near-endless suspension into the ether, subtly echoing the complexities that went before and adding a mouthwatering hint of salinity. David Schildknecht. |

JS 98 (7/2022): What an expressive and exotic nose this remarkable Spatlese has, but that’s really the least of it. The giant energy and mineral freshness are like a whale rising from the depths and blowing water out if its spout. Then comes a cornucopia of fruit at the finish, the brilliance and finesse of which makes it really hard to describe. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold. WA 94 (8/2022): Pure, precise and bright on the nose, with delicately flinty and spicy aromas, the 2021 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese is a fabulously piquant and stimulating Spätlese with mineral intensity, complexity, grip and tension, as if there were electric wires in this wine. It's enormously vital and stimulating. 8.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. |

| VM 92 (4/2019): Huckleberry and bay, grapefruit and pineapple inform a site-typical nose of penetrating pungency that anticipates this wine’s palpably dense, seedily piquant, invigoratingly zesty and tangy palate performance. Buddleia and elder flower lend alluring inner-mouth perfume. Juiciness of honeydew melon emerges accompanied by rind-like crunch and bitterness; but these are balanced by a coolingly green herbal presence, tangy citricity and pineapple core tingle. | WA 90 (2/2011): Informed by fruit from some moderately steep slopes in the Fruhlingsplatzchen and Halenberg as well from the cool Rosenberg behind the village, the Schonlebers’ 2009 Riesling trocken Mineral manages to maintain a delightful sense of buoyancy even at 12.5% alcohol. This displays a deep sense of salinity one often associates with quartzite-rich sites, and which here threads its way invigoratingly and saliva-inducingly through a stream of lemon, grapefruit, white peach, and red berries. Cooling high-toned suggestions of mint and oregano add to the sense of refreshment in this long-finishing Riesling that ought to perform well for at least the next 4-5 years. |

JS 97 (9/2021): A breathtaking wine that has all the mineral depth and concentration you associate with a Grand Cru, but also a wide spectrum of very fine citrus and berry aromas. Then it splash lands in an explosion of fresh-herb aromas. Drink or hold. WS 96 (8/2021): The 2020 Frühlingsplätzchen GG is very pure and fresh on the precise and stony, pretty reductive and herbal nose that needs lots of air to open up. Crystalline and pure on the palate, this is a bone-dry, refined, enormously salty and piquant Riesling from partly red slate, loam and quartzite plots. The finish is pure, fresh and precise, very long and expressive. Tasted from a bottle that was opened three days earlier, it is much more charming and open on the nose, showing an intense and complex bouquet of crushed stones, lemons and white fruits. The palate is round and elegant, much lusher and long, but it still has long-lasting salinity on the finish. A gorgeous Frühlingsplätzchen that today comes from stonier plots than in the beginning of the GG saga. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in July 2021. |

The palate is serene, bright, absolutely focused on lemon and a little lemony pith, but with a luminous, slender creaminess. The textural aspect holds spice, which is not apparent yet but will reveal itself. It also gives structure to this light, bright, filigree wine. Subtle length extends that lovely, gentle pithiness. WA 97 (12/2022): Werner Schönleber served the 2021 Frühlingsplätzchen GG after the Halenberg, which has never been the case here in 20 years, but knowing Werner's passion for the purity and freshness of this terroir, this makes completely sense. I remember I liked the 2019 Frühlingsplätzchen better than the Halenberg when it was young, and also from the 2021 vintage I adore the purity, brightness and flinty finesse of the Frühlingsplätzchen which is definitely the brighter, uplifted and purer Riesling. The finish is enormously salty and savory and reveals lemon fruit bitters on the aftertaste. This is life from stone, and it has a damn serious, very long and saline finish. Natural cork. 12% stated alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022. JS 95 (7/2022): Complex nose of pink and yellow grapefruit, peach and spring flowers. A super-elegant, dry Nahe riesling that marries plenty of juicy fruit with excellent concentration and vibrant minerality that leaps out at you. A slew of wild-berry and rose-hip character adds to the excitement at the dangerously crisp, wet-stone finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. |

JS 98 (7/2022): The vibrant white-peach, wild-herb and floral bouquet of this stunning GG makes a serious statement. Very compact and concentrated, it’s only just beginning to reveal its abundant treasures. Super-focused and precise, it grows and grows as it shoots over the palate at great speed. Incredible depth of wet-stone minerality at the super-long finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2025. WA 97 (12/2022): The 2021 Halenberg Riesling GG is coolish, fresh, pure, extraordinarily deep and complex on the ripe and concentrated yet precise nose that reveals notes of crushed stones and iodine. Powerful, rich and complex on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and very intense Riesling with a concentrated fruit core and a firm (mineral) structure that holds and even uplifts this giant that a will develop into an iconic German Riesling over the years in the bottle. It is still tight and youthful but possibly the greatest Halenberg I have tasted in more than 20 years. Natural cork. 12.5% stated alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022. |

| VM 90 (5/2022): Issuing from vines in the Gross Schock sector with the nickname Ternes (which now appears in fine print on the label), the 2020 Riesling Krettnacher Euchariusberg Spätlese A.P. #14 leads with a faintly musky and prickly nose suggestive of lemon peel, sage and cassis leaf. I suspect these traits might point to a bit of botrytis having been involved, though also to a temporarily slightly reduced state. Ripe peach with peach kernel and huckleberry piquancy inform a palpably dense midpalate, and the combination of piquant elements, reprised prickle, and emerging stoniness lends the sustained finish a certain austerity that one wouldn’t anticipate from a residually sweet Spätlese. But then, apropos of “sweet,” this harbors around the same residual sugar as one of the Webers’ Kabinetts of this vintage, and, if anything, it comes off as slightly drier. It definitely deserves revisiting (especially considering the sensational performance of the vintage 2019 installment), and I wouldn’t invest too much confidence in my tentative quantified prognosis of its aging potential. | VM 94 (5/2022): Sourced overwhelmingly from a parcel near the core/original Herrenberg (owned by Kesselstatt) whose nickname “Palm” now appears on the label in tiny print, the 2020 Riesling Niedermenniger Herrenberg Kabinett feinherb A.P. #3 offers a memorably fragrant as well as succulent and scintillatingly bright performance transparent to musky floral, wet stone and shimmeringly crystalline nuances. The feel is polished, and the sense of midpalate lift is reflective of the wine’s mere 8.5% alcohol, which should in no way be interpreted as pointing to prominent sweetness – nor, for that matter, to analytically high residual sugar – because here the sense of sweetness is quite restrained. Bittersweet richness akin to almond and white peach close to the pit lends a low-toned depth to complement the wine’s tingling brightness on a finish of superb persistence. (Drink between 2021-2040). | WA 91 (7/2020): On a forceful nose and waxy palate, apple and grapefruit are garlanded in pungent, shrubby herbs as well as piquantly marked by their peels and seeds. A glossy feel and an underlying sense of midpalate density are combined with a relatively opaque overall impression when compared with the most expressive wines in the present collection. But the finish is invigoratingly zesty, satisfyingly refreshing and impressively gripping, if not (for now, at least) notably transparent to nuance. This originates from the same old, ungrafted vines in the Zuckerberg sector that supplied 2017’s A.P. #4, though in this instance additional juice was provided by another nearby parcel. I may well have a blind spot to the virtues emanating from this fruit, because – without my having had time to think about this while I was tasting – for the second vintage running, my assessment falls far short of the Webers’ (or that of some other critics as well), who consider this one of their finest wines of the vintage. Intense and refined on the palate, this is a generous, juicy, sweet but also complex and sustainable Spätlese with a firm structure and a long, refined and salty finish. This is not a Spätlese to drink young but one to cellar for at least 5-10 years. The aging potential should be enormous here. 9.5% alcohol. |

WA 95 (8/2020): From a parcel with old, ungrafted vines, the 2019 Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese feinherb #4 Onkel Peter opens with a clear, delicate and floral bouquet of finely weathered slate and perfectly ripe, healthy white seed fruits. Intense and refined on the palate, this is a generous, juicy, sweet but also complex and sustainable Spätlese with a firm structure and a long, refined and salty finish. This is not a Spätlese to drink young but one to cellar for at least 5-10 years. The aging potential should be enormous here. Drink between 2025-2050. VM 93 (5/2022): The 2020 Riesling Niedermenniger Herrenberg Spätlese feinherb A.P. #4 issues from old, ungrafted vines in the parcel with the nickname Onkel Peter (which now appears in tiny print on the label), located in the Zuckerberg sector of the Herrenberg Einzellage. An enticing floral and green herbal mélange greets the nose, along with notes of white peach and grapefruit that subsequently serve for succulence, tang and brightness on a buoyant and polished palate. Peony and carnation deliver further, billowing inner-mouth appeal. Hints of green wood and peach kernel piquancy stimulate while being moderated by cooling green herbal infusion and animatingly juicy grapefruit on an impressively lingering finish. Look for this to preserve its complexity over time while projecting an even greater sense of completeness and more distinct composite personality. Drink between 2021-2034. David Schildknecht. |

| WA 95-96 (4/2020): The 2019 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese opens with a bright and coolish, very delicate and filigreed bouquet of herbal/floral aromas intertwined with bright, young spring fruit and aromas of broken slate. On the palate, this is a round, charming, highly finessed and very elegant Spätlese with the lovely fruit and juiciness of the JSU and its unrivaled finesse. The weightless finish is salty-piquant, precise and highly stimulating. This 2019 is a picture-book Spätlese from the Juffer Sonnenuhr. Tasted as a sample in April 2020. |

WA 96 (4/2018): Filled in 375-milliliter bottles, the 2016 Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling Auslese is remarkably deep, cool, fresh and mineral on the nose, with flinty grapefruit and mocha/coffee bean flavors (probably coming from the ripe pips of the very small berries). Lush, round and intense but very elegant and with a serious, persistent structure and raspberry flavors, this is a pure and piquant, beautifully grippy and stimulatingly salty Auslese with excellent aging potential. Great tension and complexity here. From 80-year-old vines, this was picked in early November, a few days before the GG. Tasted March 2018. VM 94 (1/2018): A heady nose of decadent lily, musky peony, pineapple, pink grapefruit, cassis and overripe Persian melon sets the stage for a subtly creamy, expansive, rich yet delicate palate impression, with pineapple and grapefruit serving for welcome tang and brightness to complement the wine’s textural creaminess, effusive inner-mouth perfume and luscious but overripe fruit tendencies. The combination of richness and exuberance here is really striking, and the superbly sustained finish is both ringingly clear and infectiously juicy, virtues one doesn’t encounter often in an Auslese and that I least expected in one from the Doctor. Haag says that the fruit here was botrytis-free and that is indeed how it tastes. What an auspicious first-ever Schloss Lieser Doctor Auslese! (And this wine was not auctioned but instead sold to private customers and the trade through the estate’s regular price list.) (Drink between 2017-2045). David SChildknecht. |

| VM 92 (1/2018): Lime, grapefruit, cassis and smoky black tea combine for a head-turningly intense nose and correspondingly generously juicy impression on a silken palate. Like this year’s Goldtröpfchen Kabinett, this boasts a finish of unusual sheer brightness for that site, accompanied by cooling green herbal infusions, stimulating fruit seed piquancy and a mouthwatering dose of mineral salts. (Drink between 2017-2035). David Schildknecht. |

| |
WA 96 (4/2018): The 2016 Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese displays clear, fresh and exotic fruit with a highly delicate slate spiciness. Lush and highly elegant, with mouth-filling but highly refined and elegant fruit and very fine crystallinity, this is a terribly fine and filigreed as well as sensual and persistent Helden Auslese. Perfectly balanced, with a mouthwatering and charming finish. Tasted March 2018. VM 91 (1/2018): Very ripe but fresh peach and muskmelon are mingled with pink grapefruit and lightly shrouded in musky, dusty scents. The glycerol-rich, subtly creamy palate is lusciously fruity with the grapefruit serving to enhance an exotic sense of ripeness but also to supply a modicum of welcome citric juiciness and zest. Hints of brown spice add to the allure of an impressively persistent finish, albeit not one exhibiting the clarity, brightness or mineral dimension displayed by the best wines in this latest Schloss Lieser collection. While Haag reports having harvested very little nobly rotten fruit, this wine certainly strikes me as significantly influenced by botrytis, with both virtues and drawbacks. (Drink between 2017-2035). David Schildknecht. |

WA 93 (4/2018): The 2016 Niederberg Helden Riesling Spätlese is clear, fresh and pure but very reduced at this early stage. Lush, intense and racy on the palate, this is a salty-piquant and grippy Spätlese with tension and aging potential. Keep it for 8 to 10 years! Tasted March 2018. VM 92 (1/2018): Mirabelle, pear and white peach on the nose translate into generous fresh fruit juiciness on a polished, silken palate. Honeydew melon adds a ripe and luscious dimension to the fruit as it heads into a sustained, buoyant, slate-lined finish that both soothes and stimulates. The high residual sugar here is entirely supportive and its sweetness unobtrusive. (Drink between 2017-2035). David Schildknecht. |

WA 93 (4/2018): The 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett displays upfront fruit of perfectly ripe and lush stone fruits. On the palate, this is a very salty, lush and piquant Kabinett with lingering salinity and mineral tension. Gorgeous. Tasted March 2018. VM 91 (1/2018): There is considerable fermentative “Mosel stink” on the nose that only gradually lifts enough to reveal site-typical apple wreathed in honeysuckle and heliotrope. Perhaps not coincidentally, while picked at around the same 90 Oechsle as the other site-specific Haag Kabinetts of the vintage, this one exhibits the most striking sense of delicacy. “It may be,” Haag suggested, “that this is a Kabinett for the real Mosel Riesling freaks.” It’s also one for fans with patience. The feel here is subtly creamy and the long finish clears nicely to feature persistent inner-mouth floral perfume and stony underpinnings as well as succulent fruit reinforced by high but remarkably unobtrusive residual sugar. (Drink between 2019-2028). David Schildknecht. |

JG 95 (1/2018): The 2016 Kirchspiel from Klaus-Peter Keller is a beautifully refined example of this WA 93+ (10/2017): Partly pressed in a basket press (60%), the 2016 Kirchspiel Riesling GG opens with a clear, fresh, chalky and intensely fruity nose. This is a rich, juicy, concentrated and fresh dry Riesling from calcareous soils that reveals a lot of tension, salt and vitality. Fine tannins here. Great concentration, juiciness and lingering salinity, with great grip and tension. An impressive wine! |

JS 95 (7/2021): Complex nose of wet ferns, wild berries and smoke. As cool and still as it is deep in the woods, this concentrated, tightly wound wine is just beginning to open up. Very classic, stony finish with noble austerity. Drinkable now, but best from 2023. Screw cap. WA 92+ (9/2021): Lauer’s 2020 Kupp GG Fass 18 shows a clear and pure yet intense, still a bit yeasty bouquet. The palate is quite rich and powerful but elegant, revealing a Kupp that needs some years to develop more finesse and charm. The wine is quite intense and lush and provided with tannins that still dry the palate a bit. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2021. |

| VM 90 (7/2016): Nicknamed in an allusion to the style of wine favored by Florian Lauer’s grandfather – but also by many “old-time” customers of the estate – this bottling from west-facing slopes at the northern extreme of Ayl used to be uniformly dry but in recent years, including the one in question, can be very subtly off-dry. Scents of pear and cherry are shadowed by their distilled counterparts, and a glossy, subtly creamy, fruit-filled palate preserves lovely transparency to stony, char-like and citrus zest nuances, leading to a lusciously lingering finish. (Drink between 2016-2026). David Schildknecht. |

| VM 89 (5/2017): This bottling, as usual based in large part on Saarburg and Oberemmel fruit but also incorporating a bit from Wiltingen, delightfully illustrates the bright, animating acidity of its vintage. Fresh apple and pear are laced with zesty lemon and lime and underlain by wet stone on a firm, palpably extract-rich palate. Green herbal pungency and peat-like smokiness lend further interest to an exuberant and refreshing finish. David Schildknecht. |

Lush and precise, with lingering salinity and mineral expression, this is a complex and structured Scharzhofberger Kabinett with great aging potential. Tasted in June 2019. VM 92 (7/2020): White currant and white peach are pungently wreathed in green herbs for stimulating aromatic display, and are joined on a firm palate by incisive, invigorating nips of cress and radish. | VM 93 (10/2023): The 2022 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett has the slightest crackle of flint on the shy nose. Fennel and nutmeg appear before orange peel joins in. The palate is light, with a lovely, smooth, lithe backdrop of sweet mandarin and clementine. The 2022 is tart, sweet, ripe, aromatic and rather serene with just a touch of zestiness. Lovely length and much charm. Anne Krebiehl. |

| WA 97 (10/2020): The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese is deep and intense on the nicely reductive yet concentrated and spicy-mineral nose that reveals a flinty/crunchy slate aroma with generous but elegant and refined fruit and subtle grapefruit aromas. On the palate, this Auslese displays a fine raisin aroma of perfectly ripe and overripe Riesling grapes, whereas the textured is highly finessed and beautifully balanced. This is impossible to spit, as the crystalline acidity is so delicate and interwoven with the fruit and texture of this persistently salty beauty. |

| VM 94 (10/2023): The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese opens with a notion of baked peach, especially baked peach skin, aromatic, slightly caramelized with concentrated fruit. Peach compote sweeps onto the palate, ripe and still with bite, just as cooked peach flesh appears, expressive and sweet but not overdone. This entire flight is a lesson in restraint. The long finish and aftertaste are tempered with citrus, corralling that expressive peach. Lovely, restrained, elegant. Anne Krebiehl. |

| VM 93 (6/2017): Apple and quince are coolingly laced with mint and wintergreen (decidedly reminiscent of the corresponding Bernkasteler) but also, quite unexpectedly, joined by banana, mango and muskmelon for an unusually exotic expression of Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett that is as luscious in the mouth as it is heady on the nose. Lily and heliotrope contribute to the wine’s head-turning aromatic intensity and their inner-mouth perfume to the allure of a subtly creamy palate. For all of its unusually advanced sense of ripeness for a Kabinett, this projects remarkable delicacy and a focused sense of stone, fruit and floral interface in its lingering finish. (The Prüms are fond of observing that their Wehlener Sonnenuhr is usually slower to show itself than others of their wines, but that certainly isn’t the case with this 2015.) David Schildnecht. |

| WA 91 (2/2012): Emphasizing the bitter side of the vanilla bean as well as toasted nuts and cyanic apple pit, the Prum 2010 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese A.P. #14 thereby generates a fascinating contrast with its apple jelly and honey richness. Alkaline and wet stone notes - beginning already in the nose - enhance that contrast. Nut oils, honey and apple reprise in a lusciously lingering finish. Less charming, refreshing, exuberant, or focused in finish than the corresponding Graacher, this Wehlener will almost certainly need a longer time to show its true potential; but one can rest assured based on one of Germany’s most certifiable track-records that at least a quarter century of pleasure is in the offing here. (I did not have opportunity to taste the corresponding auction cuvee, A.P. #26.) |

| VM 97 (4/2019): In no previous vintage has Felseneck found Stromberg breathing down its neck to the same degree; but Schäfer-Fröhlich’s flagship rises to the challenge and once again emerges with top honors. Penetratingly pungent but also hauntingly, bittersweetly-perfumed notes fill the nose: grapefruit, white currant, struck flint, violet and iris. The satiny but fundamentally firm, indeed, almost implacably dense palate presents a vibrantly tangy welter of citrus with crunchy tart berry and coriander seed, smoky, fusil and otherwise mineral nuances, and striking inner-mouth florality, all underlain by wet stone. Savor of fleur de sel improbably paired with bitter chocolate, adds to a mouthwatering, vibratory, dizzyingly complex finish that just won’t quit. David Schildknecht. |

JS 99 (9/2019): Very pure slate here, this is something unique. The elevated, steep and stony site has such strength of character, delivered with such purity. Gun smoke, gunflint and very fine fragrance with a streak of fresh lemons. So fine. The palate has a super fine and elegant feel, floating ballet-like over the palate. Such elegance and power. The finesse and length is really ethereal. Yellow-grapefruit juice and pith here. Wildly succulent at the long, salty finish. What a thrilling wine. Drink or hold. WA 97 (10/2019): Bright and clear fruit aromas intermix with flint stone and herbal aromas to open the spectacularly deep, dense and coolish, extremely mineral 2018 Felseneck Riesling GG. Very intense, rich and concentrated on the silky-textured and refreshing palate, this is a crystalline and silky yet dense and enormously mineral, tightly woven, dry and piquant Riesling with remarkable tannin structure and sustainable salinity. This Felseneck needs years to open up and also the biggest glass you can find. Tasted during the VDP Grosse Lage preview in Wiesbaden in August and two times at home in October 2019. WS 96 (6/2020): A very expressive, medium-bodied version, with lots of flesh, offset by powerful acidity that gives this ample energy and drive. Notes of jasmine, hops, yellow plum and kumquat impart charm midpalate, while hints of shaved ginger and lemon oil linger on the long, well-defined finish. Best from 2023 through 2036. 500 cases made, 56 cases imported. VM 96 (6/2020): Zesty lime and struck flint pungency are joined on the nose by intimations of white currant and white peach as well as of alkaline, saline sea breeze. The midpalate is firm but polished, dense and full (at around 13% alcohol), yet exhibits an improbable sense of lift, with crunchy, taut-fruit freshness and cheek-pinching brightness such as one seldom witnesses from this vintage. The superbly focused, preternaturally persistent finish is vibrantly tongue-tingling, crushed-stone-saturated, mouthwateringly saline and refreshingly loaded with primary juiciness. Yet for all of the brightness on display here, there are also resonant, deep, piquant nuttiness and a low-toned stoniness suggestive of tectonic tension. “Based on my impressions in autumn [2018],” said Fröhlich – lovely though he claimed the harvest was – “you could never have gotten me to believe that we would end up with a wine like this.” And talk about the scarcely believable: Fröhlich left out of this cuvee a roughly thousand-bottle lot of Felseneck that was due to spend a second winter in cask, and which he thinks represents his finest dry wine of the vintage. Like its Stromberg counterpart but to an even more striking degree, this bottling illustrates a point on which I elaborated when introducing the Schäfer-Fröhlich 2017s – namely, that Bockenau’s top slopes take a back seat to none on the Nahe.David Schildknecht. |

| WA 98 (8/2022): Coolish, pure and bright, with dashes of lemon oil on crushed blue slate rocks, the 2020 Felseneck GG is a Riesling to wake you up with its tart perfume. With lemon leaves and some sur lie notes on the nose, this is always precise, fresh and flinty and a picture-book Riesling for the favored style of Tim Fröhlich. This is as if the ocean was rushing over this vineyard that bears so much salt and power. In this case, its power and concentration shout for a carafe or a decade of bottle aging. For now, I prefer the purity and crystallinity of the Stromberg, but in the long run, this Felseneck could be unrivalled. |

| WA 99-100 (8/2022): The 2021 Felseneck GG is a wild expression of crushed flint and slate stones, herbs, green leaves, chamomile and lime zests along with iodine notes of lemon juice. Full-bodied but rich and very elegant on the palate, this is a pure, crystalline, sharp and dense laser sword of a dry Riesling that many might call too ascetic for now, but the richness, intensity, concentration and balance are just perfect to guarantee long bottle aging. The tannins are fine and intermingled with salts and extract, power and richness and the character of crushed stones. Very long, intense, concentrated and rich, this is a legend in the making. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in July 2022. |

| WA 92 (12/2011): From old vines in an extraordinary site about which I have written in detail in issue 192, Steinmetz’s June-bottled, tank-raised 2010 Wintricher Geierslay Riesling Spatlese Sur Lie boasts a mere 10% alcohol thanks to having left behind 28 grams of residual sugar, which was around ten less than I guessed (and I’m generally pretty good at guessing these things), such is the efficacy of 11 grams of acidity not to mention almost freakishly high extract. But the performance one gets here seems utterly poised and naturally balanced rather than in any way extreme. A seeming suffusion of salt, iodine, shrimp shell reduction, peach kernel, and crushed stone mingles saliva-inducingly with fresh, juicily-refreshing lime, white grapefruit, and white peach on a subtly silken palate, finishing with vibrantly intense mineral and fruit interactivity. This terrific value ought to perform well for at least another 12-15 years. Incidentally, Steinmetz plans to replant parts of the Geierslay that aren’t even in Riesling now with Nik Weis’s Schlangengraben vine selection. |

| WA 92 (4/2017): Thanisch's 2015 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Kabinett is very clear and still reductive on the nose, with flinty sulfur notes, bright fruit aromas and very good definition. Round, lush and juicy but also fine, mineral and salty, this is a delicate, filigreed and elegant Kabinett with a good mineral structure and a mouthwatering salty finish. A classic! |

| VM 94 (5/2022): The 2020 Riesling Kanzemer Altenberg Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs leads with lavender, iris, orange blossom, white peach and lime scents that soar from the glass. The feel is seductively silken, and the mouth fills with luscious pit fruit, animatingly bright citrus, wafting floral perfume, and the sort of mouthwatering animal, mineral and herbal savor akin to raw oyster innards that was also present in this collection’s Scharzhofberger Grosses Gewächs. The vibrant, invigorating finish is bell-clear and focused, while not forgetting Riesling’s fundamental duty to refresh. 5/2022. |
