WS 92 (4/2015): This has lots of energy, with enticing thyme and tarragon notes flecking the core of lemon zest, white peach, tangerine and straw flavors. The long salted butter finish crackles with life. Rock-solid, and will be fun to cellar for a touch. Drink now through 2017. 9,417 cases made. WA 92 (10/2016): The 2013 Carbonnieux Blanc felt primal, a little herbaceous on the nose, perhaps without the complexity of some of its peers and yet it opens intriguingly in the glass, a white Bordeaux coveting secrets perhaps. The palate is very saline, almost Muscadet-like with an edgy, spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a curious Carbonnieux, atypical for the vintage and there is something in that which is very appealing in its individuality. It might not possess the broad appeal of say, Smith-Haut-Lafitte Blanc, but there is something cerebral about this Carbonnieux Blanc. JS 92 (2/2016): Lots of dried melon, wax and lemon rind. Medium to full body, fresh acidity and a clean finish. Classic white Bordeaux from 75% sauvignon blanc and 25% semillon. Drink now. |

JS 98 (2/2016): This is a phenomenal white with big density and energy. Full bodied, yet incredibly agile and intense. Fabulous character of salt, minerals, and shells. Just a hint of tannins. Dried white peaches. Pears and apples. Super subtle character. 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon. Great wine. A wine for the future but so great now. WA 94 (10/2016): The 2013 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is very refined on the nose. There is a sense of effortlessness here that is very persuasive, unfolding with lemon thyme and lime, just a touch of lychee in the background, everything in its right place. The palate is fresh and vibrant with nectarine and lime zest, a "cool" white Bordeaux, quite restrained and almost Chablis-like on the finish. This is a complex and intellectual offering from Olivier Bernard, dare I say, a thrilling wine in the making. VM 92-95 (5/2014): Bright straw-yellow. The captivating nose hints at a considerable semillon component, with its white stone fruit and beeswax notes accented by fresh citrus and white flowers. Bright and juicy but dense, with lively acidity providing clarity and cut to the white stone fruit and citrus fruit flavors. The finish is vibrant and long, with pronounced minerality and a nice floral touch. Outstanding white Bordeaux in the making. Ian d'Agata. WS 92-95 (7/2014): This marries high-pitched thyme, chamomile and quinine notes with richer white peach, shortbread and meringue flavors. The long finish pulls everything together. Should be a beauty when finished. |

JS 94-95 (4/2014): This is the best Cos blanc ever, with lots of sliced grapefruit, pears and hints of fennel and aniseed. Full body with bright acidity and fruit. Oyster shell and salt on the finish. Excellent. 76% sauvignon blanc and 24% semillon. NM 90-92 (5/2014): The Chateau Cos d'Estournel Blanc, a blend of 76% Sauvignon Blanc and 24% Semillon with just 7% new oak, has a simple citrus peel and grapefruit bouquet. The palate is well balanced with fine tension and acidity. This is one of the best white Cos d'Estournel that I have tasted in terms of freshness and vitality. Perhaps one of the best white from the estate? WA 89-91 (8/2014): Only 7,000 bottles of this dry white Bordeaux were made from a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon. Revealing lots of honeyed grapefruit, lemon zest and metallic-like minerality, this crisp, medium-bodied, beautifully perfumed and intense white can be enjoyed over the next 5-6 years. |

JS 97 (2/2016): This is vibrant and gorgeous with dried pineapple, honey and cream. Full body, plenty of energetic structure and a long, long finish. Goes on for minutes. Fantastic Aile. Sauvignon blanc with semillon. Structured! VM 90-93 (5/2014): (67% sauvignon blanc and 33% semillon): Dark gold-tinged straw-yellow. Smoky herbs, grapefruit pith and honeydew melon aromas are complicated by white peach and spicy pear. Dense and brisk on entry, then a bit diffuse in the middle, but with vibrant flavors of passion fruit, grapefruit and herbs. Firm and bright but quite ripe too, showing nothing green or hard on the long, bracing finish. Seems less focused than recent vintages of Aile d'Argent, but perhaps another year in the bottle will help it gain precision. Ian d'Agata. WS 90 (4/2015): Quite bold, with a singed brioche frame adding some heft to the core of lemon curd, tangerine and lemon chiffon notes. Features a long salted butter finish. An extroverted style, but has enough zip to stay honest. Drink now through 2016. WA 89 (8/2015): The 2013 Aile d'Argent Blanc has an attractive nose of lime leaf, grapefruit and a touch of yellow plum, still a little new oak to be assimilated, but otherwise very appealing. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of almond and lemongrass on the entry, crisp acidity ,but just missing a little length on the finish to merit a higher evaluation. Enjoy this white from Philippe Dhalluin and the team over the next 7-10 years. |

JS 97 (2/2016): This is phenomenal with superb depth and texture. Full-bodied and very sweet, yet the bright acidity balances the wine out. Creamy mouthfeel with phenolic undertones. Great finish. This wine has a great future. Better in 2021, but already great. WS 94 (3/2016): This is on the exotic side of the ledger, with mouthfilling ginger, mango, quince and papaya flavors that course through, backed by a singed marshmallow note on the long, unctuous finish. Approachable, but no hurry. Drink now through 2033. 5,000 cases made. WA 93-95 (4/2014): The 2013 Suduiraut has one of the more flamboyant bouquets of the vintage, one that is actually reminiscent of de Fargues. There are copious Satsuma and dried honey scents, hints of beeswax and almond that keep your snout in the glass. The palate is very well-balanced with a viscous entry, just a touch of marmalade and quince coming through, and then blossoming toward the weighty finish that shows just a touch more oak at the moment. This is an excellent Suduiraut. VM 92 (3/2019): The 2013 Suduiraut, picked from 3 to 30 October, is destined to be overshadowed by the succeeding two vintages. The aromatics feel very “contained” with beeswax, dried honey and light spicy aromas, although it is missing the intensity of a top vintage. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, very focused and poised, perhaps a more approachable Suduiraut since it does not possess the concentration of a more benevolent growing season. But it retains admirable freshness and there is a lovely spiciness, a dab of ginger on the aftertaste. 13.6% alcohol, 145gm/L residual sugar. Tasted at the Suduiraut vertical at the château. Neal Martin. |

WS 98 (1/2016): Lightly toasted marshmallow and macadamia nut aromas lead the way, followed by incredibly juicy mirabelle plum, green fig, and glazed pear and peach flavors. As big as this is, there are still plenty of honeysuckle, quinine and chamomile notes kicking the finish into yet another gear. This has purity and length to burn, which it will for a couple of generations. Best from 2020 through 2050. 6,665 cases made. JS 98 (2/2016): Bright aromas of sliced mango, papaya, botrytis, and lemon follow through to a full body, medium sweet and phenolic palate that gives the wine structure and beauty. Electric acidity and freshness yet an impressive energy and length. A severe selection was made. 40% of the production was destined to the grand vin. About 80,000 bottles made. This is 70% semillion and 30% sauvignon. Better in 2018. NM 95-97 (4/2014): Firstly, you notice the color, which is a touch deeper than recent vintages at this stage. The bouquet is quite honeyed and rich for Yquem at this early juncture, with subtle scents of peach skin, white flowers, and a puff of chalk and frangipane. The palate is viscous on the entry, all about the texture at first, coating the mouth with luscious botrytized fruit. There are touches of Seville orange marmalade, fresh apricot, a hint of spice and passion fruit. This is imbued with impressive depth and weight, perhaps an Yquem that is determined to make an impression after last year-s absence. It might not possess the finesse of a top flight Yquem, but it has immense power and persistency. VM 94-96 (4/2014): The 2013 d'Yquem is rich, honeyed and voluptuous in the glass, but never excessively heavy. Crème brulee, candied lemon, apricot jam, orange marmalade, sweet spices and almond paste meld together in a Sauternes built on class and finesse What a gorgeous wine this is. Antonio Galloni. |
