WA 98 (6/2004): The 2001 Ausone has put on even more weight than I anticipated. The “wine of the vintage," this inky/purple-colored 2001 boasts a provocative, floral perfume of crushed stones, raspberries, blackberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and smoke. What makes it so sensational are the layers of flavor and nuances that unfold as the wine sits in the glass as well as on the palate. This is an extraordinarily intense effort, but remarkably elegant and well-balanced. It ideally needs another decade of cellaring; it should last for 4-5 decades! Alain Vauthier is a perfectionist, which is evidenced by what he has produced over the last half dozen vintages at Ausone. Kudos to readers lucky enough to find a bottle or two ... and live long enough to enjoy them in their prime. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050+. WS 95 (4/2004): You have to love the beautiful plum, berry and vanilla character in this wine. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long finish. Very refined and beautiful. Not the 2000, but classic just the same. Best after 2007. 150 cases imported. VM 93+ (6/2004): Medium ruby. Tarry black fruits and minerals on the nose. Began extremely tight and austere, with penetrating black fruit and mineral flavors. With aeration, this showed more flesh and complexity, hinting at blackberry, graphite, espresso and sexy oak. For such a vibrant, juicy, minerally wine, the tannins are extremely fine. This may well merit an even higher score 12 to 15 years down the road. |

WS 91 (3/2004): Sleek and racy, with a beautiful structure of very fine tannins and ripe fruit. There are minerals, currants and berries throughout, yet it?s subtle and caressing. Lovely wine. I like this as much as the 2000. Best after 2007. VM 90 (6/2004): Ruby-red. Ripe aromas of licorice, bitter chocolate, roasted herbs, tar and exotic spices. Supple, round and pliant, with redcurrant, licorice and herbal flavors. Finishes with surprisingly sweet tannins nicely buffered by the wine's fat. A very good showing for this wine. WA 88 (6/2004): Tasted on three separate occasions, this 2001 did not perform nearly as well from bottle as it did from cask. A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, it exhibits aromas reminiscent of a Starbuck espresso, melted licorice, black currants, cherries, cedar, a notion of dried herbs, and elevated oak. With attractive texture and firm tannin in the finish, it requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 14-15. While it is an excellent, medium-bodied Pauillac, it is nowhere near as impressive as I anticipated from cask. |

WS 90 (3/2004): Beautiful wine with blackberry, chocolate and floral aromas. Medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a pretty finish. Refined and silky. Not a big Conseillante, but all in finesse and texture. I like it as much as the 2000. Best after 2006. 4,165 cases made. WA 89 (6/2004): Always a Burgundian, feminine style of wine, La Conseillante’s 2001 exhibits aromas of plum and raspberry fruit as well as noticeable new oak in a medium-bodied, dark ruby/plum-colored format with excellent ripeness, but hard tannin in the finish. Although disjointed, it reveals signs of precociousness as well as some edginess and unintegrated tannin (the reason for the question mark). There is a lot going on in this elegant 2001, but it is not nearly as profound as the 2000. Nevertheless, it is the type of wine that may fool early tasters as it does need 2-3 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016. VM 89 (6/2004): Bright ruby-red. Plum, chocolate and nutty oak on the nose. Suave and fine-grained, with sexy flavors of plum, smoke and chocolatey oak. Supple, elegant and sweet. Finishes with tannins that are firm but not at all hard, and tangy, persistent flavors of raspberry and chocolate. |

WS 94 (3/2004): Wonderful spice and currant aromas to this young wine. Full-bodied, with super well?integrated, refined tannins. Long caressing finish. This is very, very silky. Just like from barrel. Cos is on top of it now. Best after 2008. 17,705 cases made. WA 93 (6/2004): A beautiful effort, the 2001 Cos d’Estournel (65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot) exhibits a poised, noble bouquet of black currants, cedar, spice box, and licorice. A hint of truffles emerges as it sits in the glass. Medium-bodied with sweet fruit (mostly black) and nicely integrated wood, it builds incrementally in the mouth, ending with a 50-second finish. Drink this stylish, restrained yet substantial claret over the next 15+ years. NM 92 (3/2011): Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. There is a fine level of sweetness on the nose with red rather than black fruits: cranberry leaf and raspberry with a touch of wild strawberry and orange rind developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with great depth and structure. Blackberry, smoke, cooked meat and crushed stone, finely poised towards the finish that has a wonderful symmetry. Lovely. VM 92 (5/2004): Bright ruby-red. Vibrant, complex aromas of cassis, graphite, eucalyptus and tobacco. Fat and sweet but shapely, with impressive density and underlying structure. Flavors of plum, mint, roasted nuts and sweet oak. Fairly full for young Cos, but quite suave. Finishes with firm but smooth tannins and excellent grip. Better than the 2000. |

Full of finesse, but lacking concentration as well as depth, it should be consumed over the next 10-12 years. |

WA 95 (6/2004): The 2001 offers a huge spectrum of aromas, including notes of smoke, mocha, chocolate, coffee, and loads of blackberry, cherry, and currant fruit. The superb aromatics are followed by an elegant, medium-bodied, deliciously supple-textured, expansive, fleshy, beautifully pure, well-delineated Pomerol. It is a brilliant effort as well as one of the candidates for the wine of the appellation in 2001. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2014. NM 93 (5/2012): Compared to the 1998, the Clos l’Eglise 2001 is far more taut and linear on the nose, but with stupendous delineation and mineralite. It is so candied and floral with hints of graphite developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity: graphite-tinged black fruit, spice, kirsch and a touch of orange zest. It has great delineation and persistency on the finish. What a great Pomerol 2001 this is: an effortless combination of classic and modern. WS 92 (3/2004): Rich and solid red with fantastically silky tannins and cool mineral and berry character. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long, caressing finish. This is very good indeed. Best after 2008. 1,330 cases made. VM 91 (6/2004): Medium ruby. Compelling aromas of candied currant and cherry, tobacco and roasted nuts. Suave, silky and sappy, with smoky berry and plum flavors framed and intensified by harmonious acidity. Dense, sweet, rich and seductive. Finishes ripely tannic, subtle and long. NM 93 (9/2011): Tasted at the chateau, the 2001 at ten years of age has superb intensity on the nose with black cherries, melted tar, graphite and cold black tea all with fine vigour and vivacity. The palate is medium-bodied with a cohesive, quite powerful entry that sets the stage for a very poised, focused GPL. From its rather awkward showings out of barrel, the 2001 is blossoming into a sublime expression of Pauillac in this vintage. I would still afford it more time though. VM 90 (6/2004): Red-ruby. Ripe aromas of dark chocolate, minerals and earth. Sweet and plummy, with a silky texture and lovely depth of flavor. Finishes with fine-grained tannins that spread out to coat the palate. WA 90 (6/2004): The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2001 Haut-Bailly reveals sweet, pure, elegant aromas of currants, toast, and cigar smoke. With wonderful sweetness, fine tannins, a delicate, nuanced personality, and a long, persistent finish, this well-made, impressive Pessac-Leognan will provide plenty of pleasure over the next 12-14 years. VM 89 (6/2004): Red-ruby. Nose dominated by nutty oak. Supple, sexy and rather full-blown for a young Haut-Bailly, with expressive flavors of currant, tobacco, licorice and spicy, nutty oak. A fairly dense, lush wine whose tannins are rather pronounced today. Ultimately less long than the 2002, though. Sanders describes this wine as "denser than the '99 and more classic than our 2000." WS 88 (3/2004): Shows enticing aromas of blackberries and cherries that follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a medium finish. Subtle and refined. Best after 2007. 5,830 cases made. |

NM 95 (3/2011): Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. This has a very elegant bouquet with blackberry, briary, potter’s kiln and bacon fat with fine delineation and lift. The palate is medium-bodied with great freshness on the entry, very good acidity with red-berried fruit interlaced with cedar, graphite and leather. Very good depth, very feminine and focused with ample freshness on the finish that seems to have “filled out” in recent years. Excellent. WS 95 (3/2004): Intense aromas of violets, berries and spices follow through to a full-bodied palate, with layers of supersilky tannins and a long, long finish. Very classic in style. All in elegance and length. I like it better than the 2000. Best after 2009. 1,000 cases imported. WA 94 (6/2004): Haut-Brion’s 2001, which was bottled late (the end of September, 2003), possesses an unmistakable nobility as well as a burgeoning complexity. Plum/purple to the rim, this blend of 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc is playing it close to the vest, having closed down considerably after bottling. Nevertheless, it reveals pure notes of sweet and sour cherries, black currants, licorice, smoke, and crushed stones. Medium-bodied with excellent purity, firm tannin, and an angular, structured finish, it requires 5-7 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020+. VM 92+ (6/2004): Full red-ruby, less bright than La Mission. Brooding aromas of raspberry, nuts, menthol and game. Dense, rich, chewy and deep but a bit youthfully closed, showing less personality today than the 2001 La Mission. Larger but not longer. Finishes with building tannins and a minty nuance. |

WS 93 (3/2004): This wine starts out very tight, with fresh herb and tobacco character, but then it opens to ripe plum, berry and chocolate character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Impressive. Lafleur is always Outstanding. Best after 2009. 1,000 cases made. WA 92 (6/2004): Performing slightly less impressively from bottle than it did from cask, this wine’s Cabernet Franc element has come forward, revealing a distinctive herbal, bell pepper, vegetal character that kept my score from going higher. Nevertheless, there is plenty to like about this 2001 Pomerol. It possesses a saturated ruby/purple color, powerful aromas (kirsch liqueur, raspberries, and blackberries), an earthy, muscular, chunky character, and the most tannic personality of any Pomerol I tasted. While not the huge blockbuster Lafleur can often produce, it is well-built. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. VM 90+ (6/2004): Bright ruby-red. Raspberry, menthol, leather and spices on the slightly sauvage, cool nose. Fat and rich but youthfully tough, even clenched, with idiosyncratic flavors of medicinal black cherry, leather, game and black olive. Not showing the sweet side of the vintage today; in fact, this seems rather backward today, despite its modest acidity. |

WA 95 (6/2004): A brilliant offering, which should be drinkable much earlier than the blockbuster 2000, the 2001 Latour boasts an inky/ruby/purple color to the rim as well as a glorious bouquet of black currants, crushed stones, vanilla, and hints of truffles and oak. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance primarily Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it reveals a sweetness on the palate that is atypical for such a young Latour. The beautiful integration of tannin, acidity, and wood is stunning. The wine flows across the palate with fabulous texture, purity, and presence. This luscious, full-bodied Latour was surprisingly open-knit on the three occasions I tasted it from bottle. However, do not mistake its aging ability as this 2001, despite its precociousness, will last 20-25 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025. WS 95 (3/2004): Extremely attractive aromas of blackberries and currants with just a hint of mineral and oak. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. As it was from barrel; powerful and fast. Serious stuff. Best after 2010. VM 92+ (6/2004): Deep red-ruby. Enticing aromas of roasted plum, currant, graphite and smoky oak. Precise, spicy and juicy; more herbal than the 2002 or 2003 but also very intensely flavored and not at all hard. This very long, pure Latour seems to be shutting down today. |

WS 94 (3/2004): This is very floral and perfumed with lots of violets, roses and berries. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a racy finish. Superfresh and long. Focused and clean. Best after 2010. WA 93 (6/2004): Jean-Hubert Delon thinks the 2001 Leoville Las Cases could turn out to be as good as his 2000. I’m not sure I agree, but it may come close. A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.5% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2001 (which represents only 40% of the production) reveals notes of sweet vanillin intermixed with pure cassis, black cherries, and lead pencil shavings. Elegant and medium-bodied, it possesses a saturated purple color, high tannin, and a structured, backward feel in the mouth. This quintessentially elegant Las Cases needs another 5-7 years to hit its plateau of maturity. It will be one of the Medoc’s longest lived wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030. |

NM 93 (3/2011): Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. This has a lovely ripe, creamy bouquet with a lot of well subsumed new oak matched by clean, plum and blackberry scented fruit interlaced with cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good structure here with notes of blackberry, cedar, a slight ferrous note and truffle towards the classic, foursquare finish. Very conservative but certainly very well made. WA 90 (6/2004): Sweet notions of plums, black currants, caramel, and spicy oak are provocative and alluring. Subtle but substantial, layered, and textured, with medium body as well as sexy, up-front flavors, low acidity, and ripe tannin, this beauty is among the most evolved and flamboyant of the appellation. Nevertheless, it should age well. Anticipated maturity: now-2016. VM 90 (6/2004): Bright ruby-red. Enticing aromas of redcurrant, leather, tobacco, smoke and mint. Silky but firm in the middle palate, with lovely cut and clarity. Sweet currant fruit complicated by leather and tobacco notes. Finishes firm and persistent. Stephen Tanzer. WS 90 (3/2004): Smoky and rich with lots of spice and berries. Medium- to full-bodied, with very good tannins with soft and silky texture and a medium finish. Not as impressive in bottle as barrel, but Outstanding. Best after 2008. 20,000 cases made. |

NM 92 (3/2011): Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. The first bottle of this was denuded of vitality and out of sorts (indeed this is a major problem with this vintage.) Not corked, but previous experience old me that it was not “happy” bottle. Fortunately I stayed for another to be opened and this far more representative. Ripe, dark berried fruits on the nose with touches of mulberry, briary, graphite and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp entry, tarry black fruits on the entry, sharp acidity, very tight but that is probably because this bottle had just been opened. Very fine. VM 90+ (6/2004): Bright red-ruby. Currant, herbs and smoke on the nose. Rich and suave on entry, then rather closed and austere in the middle palate, with moderately ripe, nicely delineated flavors of currant, cherry, smoke and mint. Best today on the back end, which features broad tannins and subtle lingering flavor. WS 90 (3/2004): Clean and sleek, with tobacco, berry and plum character, medium body and a silky, fresh finish. Firm and balanced Lynch. Best after 2007. 40,830 cases made. WA 88 (8/2011): The fully mature 2001 exhibits aromas of tapenade, bay leaf, licorice, red and black currants, damp earth and new saddle leather. Medium-bodied and atypically elegant and charming for a Lynch Bages with soft, fully resolved tannin and a moderately long finish, it is much lighter than a great vintage such as 2000. |

| WA 88 (6/2004): Given how splendid recent vintages have been, I expected a bit more from Malescot Saint-Exupery, clearly a property on the rebound over the last decade or so. The elegant 2001 is Margaux-like in its fragrant plum, cassis, and floral-scented nose. Medium-bodied, light, but pretty, it offers notes of red and black fruits, supple tannin, and a polished, straightforward finish. Drink it over the next 10-11 years. |

WS 95 (1/2018): Suave from the start, with beguiling tea, singed sandalwood and lilac notes backed by alluring, gently steeped red and black currant fruit. The long finish has an alder edge that stays in lockstep with the fruit, ending with a minerally echo. Drink now through 2030. 10,833 cases made. NM 94 (10/2016): The 2001 Chateau Margaux continues to evolve in impressive fashion. The nose feels sensual, veering towards red rather than black fruit, with disarming purity and perhaps showing more floral/violet character than the 1999. Both display tremendous precision and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, edgy and tensile with crisp acidity, so fresh and vital in the mouth. Tasted next to the 1996 Château Margaux, it is clear to see that the 2001 is several steps behind, yet the way it fans out with such confidence and brio on the finish assures that this has a prosperous future. VM 93 (6/2004): Enticing aromas of boysenberry, cedar, espresso and roasted oak. Sweet, lush and broad in the mouth, with sappy berry and espresso flavors. This boasts the pliant texture and near-perfect balance of the vintage's best examples. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins. Like so many 2001s, this is easy to taste today but may well close down in the coming year or so. "The 2001 is a smiley wine," says Pontallier, "while the 2002, though a bit stiff today, has more power and excellent aging potential. But neither ranks among our greatest vintages." |

WA 96 (6/2014): Perhaps one of the more overlooked vintages in recent years, the Château La Mission Haut-Brion 2001 is one of the finest wines of the vintage. Here, one is immediately taken aback by the precision exuded by the nose: small dark cherries and orange blossom still there, perhaps the mineralite more heightened than ever. The palate displays exquisite balance with nigh on perfect acidity, demonstrating more tension, if not the dimension of the 1990 tasted alongside. This is a serious La Mission for long-term aging. Tasted June 2014. VM 94 (9/2021): The 2001 La Mission Haut-Brion is less complex on the nose than the preceding millennial vintage. There is more blue fruit here, and perhaps greater purity compared to the 2000, though it does not quite possess the same amplitude. The saline, medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and hints of tangy black olives (kalamata, maybe?), and shows wonderful substance and grip toward the pure finish. Jean-Philippe Delmas commented upon the “surprising depth” of the 2001, which is true. But at the moment, the 2000 has a little more personality. 13.2% alcohol. WS 94 (3/2004): Very smoky, with berry, coffee and tobacco aromas. Full-bodied, with polished velvety tannins, plenty of fruit and a cedary aftertaste. Tight and compacted. This is better than the 2000 Mouton. It's a baby 1986 Mouton. Solid and very, very fine. Persists for a long time on the palate. Best after 2009. VM 91+ (6/2004): Good full ruby. High-pitched aromas of blackberry, mint and minerals. Juicy but quite tightly wound today; much more austere than the comparatively pliant Clerc-Milon-not to mention firmer and less fleshy than it appeared from barrel a year ago. Juicy acidity contributes to the impression of structure. Unlike most 2001s, this seems already to have gone into a shell. This penetrating, mostly cabernet sauvignon (86%) Mouton will need at least a decade of bottle aging. WA 89 (6/2004): A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the opaque purple-colored, chunky 2001 Mouton-Rothschild does not possess the finesse and stature often achieved by this first-growth. It offers a tell-tale cassis-scented nose, and a monolithic, medium to full-bodied style with relatively high, austere tannin in the finish (a characteristics I also noticed in cask). A dry, angular, backward effort for the vintage, it should be forgotten for at least a decade. Let’s hope the fruit continues to expand and sweeten, but that’s no sure thing. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025+. |

WA 96 (6/2004): One of the candidates for wine of the vintage ... again, the 2001 Pavie, from a magnificent south-facing vineyard planted primarily on limestone soil, is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. After a six week maceration, it spent nearly 24 months in new oak prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Some Bordeaux brokers think it might be even better than the 2000 Pavie, but I do not agree. The inky/ruby/purple-colored 2001 exhibits a tight but promising nose of crushed stones, a liqueur of blackberries, cherries, and black currants, and subtle smoke and licorice in the background. Powerful, with impressive elegance, fine harmony among its elements, a multi-layered texture, it has a finish that lasts for 50+ seconds. There is considerable tannin, but it is well-integrated. Give it 3-4 years, and drink it over the next two decades. A profound effort for the vintage, it is an example of a perfectionist proprietor pushing the envelope of quality. WS 92 (3/2004): Powerful, with loads of smoke, vanilla, berry and chocolate character. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Modern and rich. Well-done. Best after 2008. 7,500 cases made. VM 92 (6/2004): Saturated ruby-red color. Knockout nose combines perfumed red berries, licorice, tar and chalky minerality, along with some exotic roasted notes. Sweet, fat and thick, with slightly roasted flavors of black raspberry and game. A large-scaled, impressively lush wine that comes off as distinctly more vibrant than the 2001 Pavie-Decesse. From the outset this wine has shown a compelling balance of sugars, alcohol and acids. Very long, mounting finish features firm but ripe tannins and complex notes of raspberry, stone, tobacco and woodsmoke. |

WA 93 (6/2004): A distinctive bouquet of violets, soy, pepper, blackberries, cassis, and tree bark gives this 2001 a singular style. This dense ruby/purple-colored blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and a whopping 14% Petit Verdot exhibits plenty of structure, wonderful sweetness, a closed style, but a rich, textured, persistent character. The unusually large percentage of Petit Verdot gives the wine more structure and less initial charm. This beauty needs some time in the cellar. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018. VM 92 (6/2004): Red-ruby. Enticing aromas of plum, woodsmoke and Cuban tobacco. Lush, silky and suave, with intriguing hints of mocha and cedar. A wonderfully sweet, impeccably balanced claret without any rough edges. Finishes long and firmly tannic. WS 92 (3/2004): Plenty of tobacco, berry and cedar aromas and flavors. Medium- to full-bodied, with sweet fruit and refined tannins. Long and ripe fruit on the finish. Not quite as exciting as from barrel. Best after 2007. |

WS 90 (3/2004): Very perfumed with blackberry and light wet earth. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. Rich and generous for the vintage. Much better than from barrel. Best after 2007. 25,000 cases made. WA 89 (6/2004): This may be the largest vineyard in the Medoc, with nearly 300 acres under vine. There was a period in the nineties where Talbot seemed to be a bit off form, but quality over recent vintages has displayed considerable promise. This estate is capable of producing very special wines, as anyone who has tasted their 1986 or 1982 can easily attest. The 2001, which represents only 50% of the production, is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. A dense saturated ruby/purple color is followed by notes of smoked herbs, licorice, cedar, incense, plums, and black currants. The wine is medium-bodied and moderately tannic for a 2001, with good depth as well as power. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and consume it over the following 12-14 years. VM 87-89 (6/2002): Medium ruby. Sappy black fruit aromas complicated by leather, dark chocolate and menthol. Fresh and primary but quite firm, even a bit austere, in the middle palate. Offers moderate density and finishes with slightly tough tannins. A more classic but also somewhat harder style of wine than the 2000. |

NM 94 (3/2011): Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. This has a very earthy bouquet with touches of rusty nail and undergrowth, but well defined if lacking a little vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins on the entry, some leafy Cabernet Franc here. Good acidity, masculine with a slightly foursquare finish but fine length and dimension. This has more to give and indeed, returning after two hours this has retained such vigour and sinew...but it’s a bit of a beast at the moment. VM 94 (3/2012): (95% merlot and 5% cabernet franc; 3.71 pH; IPT 79; 13.3% alcohol): Bright ruby-red. Ripe but still inexpressive on the nose, offering delicate aromas of red fruits, violet, crushed stone, menthol and wild herbs. Silky and round on entry, then rich and suave in the mid-palate, with a hint of smoky minerality nicely complementing the pure red and black fruit flavors. This is a marvelously balanced wine of great breed and purity. Finishes long, sweet and bright, with very smooth tannins and less of the earthy, leathery qualities found in some other Trotanoy vintages. The 2001 vintage saw a large crop but down slightly from the levels of 2000 and 1999. The growing season featured a wet winter, a fine spring, a dreary July, a warm August (though not as hot as 2000) and a cool but dry September, with low rainfall in August and September. "The 2001 is a very pure, refined and classy expression of merlot--what Bordeaux can do so well," according to Jean-Claude Berrouet. WS 91 (3/2004): Lovely blackberry and cherry character, with a medium body, silky tannins and a fresh finish. Delicious red already but will be better with age. The finesse of Trotanoy. Best after 2006. 2,165 cases made. WA 90 (6/2004): This virile, muscular offering’s dense plum/garnet color is followed by aromas of saddle leather, undergrowth, and black fruits. Made in a brooding, medium-bodied, backward style for the vintage, it possesses good weight and richness, firm tannin, and a hint of truffles. Less charming and developed than La Fleur-Petrus, this powerful, structured 2001 requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 12-15. |

WS 94 (3/2004): Very subtle aromas of blackberries, chocolate and plums follow through to a full-bodied palate, with very silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. An excellent wine with great intensity for the vintage. Very long indeed. Winemaker and part-owner Alexandre Thienpont is a master. Best after 2009. 4,000 cases made. WA 93 (6/2004): A brilliant effort from Alexandre Thienpont, this blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc is a deep purple-colored, fleshy, layered effort offering a sweet nose of creosote, incense, Christmas spices, plenty of red and black fruits, and hints of licorice as well as new oak. Rich, medium to full-bodied, with tremendous purity in addition to nobility, give it two more years of cellaring and drink it over the next following 15-18 years. VM 90+ (6/2004): Saturated ruby-red. Pure but reticent nose hints at plum, raspberry and chocolate. Juicy and sweet but rather closed in the middle palate. Very serious merlot here: this has terrific penetration and structure for a 2001 from the Right Bank. Finishes long and gripping. A very good showing, but this wine really needs seven or eight years of additional cellaring. |
