	VM 93 (4/2018): Bright red. Extremely perfumed aromas of violet and raspberry on the enticing nose. Then more raspberry, but also blueberry and strawberry flavors and a strong juicy fruit-cocktail-like quality on the palate that persists nicely. Really lovely Brunello bursting at the seams with fresh bright fruit, and already utterly irresistible now. I had trouble not gulping my glass down all at once. Ian d'Agata.

	WA 87 (12/2006): Altesino is located in a spectacular spot that affords views of Montosoli, the hillside from which the estate makes its most famous Brunello. In past years I have enjoyed this producer’s wines very much, often purchasing them for my own cellar. Unfortunately the estate’s 2001s have proven to be very inconsistent in my multiple tastings of the wines. I can only recommend the Montosoli, with the caveat that my notes refer to Lot # 5343 (indicated on US Importer Leonardo LoCascio’s back label). There are four bottlings of the Brunello and two of the Montosoli, and bottles of both wines purchased in Europe have shown significant variation. Altesino’s 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli (Lot#5343) presents notes of chocolate, toasted oak, earthiness and super-ripe fruit on a full-bodied, ample frame with modest complexity. Underyling notes of mustiness and greenness convey an overall impression of rusticity that is out of character for Altesino, making this Brunello one of the vintage’s few notable underachievers. This was the best of the three bottles of this wine I have tasted so far. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.   VM 70 (8/2006): Good deep red. Nutty oak, coffee and pineapple on the nose. Juicy, oaky and tightly wound; dense but cool. Began rather stern but grew sweeter with aeration, finishing with substantial tannins that avoid dryness. A second sample showed aromas of nectarine and coconut and finished leathery and dry. This wine is outside my parameters for Brunello.

	JS 98 (11/2017): Opulent aromas of plum, dark berry, flower and sandalwood. Full body. Dense yet vivid and energetic. Wonderful exotic character and intensity. Great finish. Drink in 2021.   VM 97 (4/2018): Good full pale ruby-red. Knockout aromas and flavors of red cherry, raspberry, licorice and minerals, complicated by hints of iris and violet. Extremely suave and polished on the extremely long, pure, mineral finish. Deeper, richer, more tannic and longer than the lovely 2013 Brunello Classico from Altesino, this is an absolutely beautiful Brunello. I especially like that the pristine, refined aromas and flavors of the famed Montosoli site are showcased to maximum effect here. One of the best Brunellos of the vintage. Ian d'Agata.   WA 95 (2/2018): This celebrated single-vineyard wine follows through with many of the attractive themes presented in the base Brunello, only you get more robust intensity and power here. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is slightly more angular and edgy. You don't get the same immediate silkiness that you find in the non-vineyard-specific alternative. This wine plays up its structure with firm tannins and solid building blocks of red fruit and spice. There is a sweet note of clove or cinnamon on the close.

	JD 94 (3/2021): Warm with baking spice, the 2015 Brunello Riserva has comforting aromas of cherry pie and purple plum. Full of ripe fruit, the palate gives way to more vinous, savory characteristics of cherry pit, black licorice, and tea leaf. The 2015 was aged for four years in new and used Slavonian oak. This is a contemplative wine in the Altesino lineup which deserves time to show what its potential will hold. Cellar 3-5 years and enjoy 2025-2035. Audrey Frick.

	VM 94 (11/2024): The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is dark and brooding, with hints of black tea leaves, crushed rocks and smoke before giving way to the scent of dried black cherry. It balances silken textures with a pure mix of ripe red and black fruits as cooling acidity maintains a lovely balance. Aromas of citrus-laced blackberries mix with sage and nuances of licorice. 	VM 97 (12/2021): The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva pulls you close to the glass with a deep and seductive display of black raspberry preserves complemented by sweet sage, dried roses and pipe tobacco. With further coaxing, it gains in volume and lift, taking on hints of mint and camphor. This greets the palate with undeniable elegance, casting velvety waves of violet-tinged wild berries and sweet spices across a motivating core of juicy acidity, as a subtle coating of round tannins forms toward the close. While structured and incredibly long, energy remains high, as nuances of cherry pits offset by sour citrus and hints of cedar fade. It’s amazing to experience such energy and purity from a young Biondi Santi Riserva. As pretty as the Annata released last year was, I worried that the extended aging for the Riserva might rob the wine of some of its fruit; instead it is the complete opposite, as this contains the depth and complexity of the best wines of the vintage. I can’t wait to see how the 2015 matures over the next several decades. Eric Guido.

	WA 99 (5/2023): Wow, here is a vintage I've been anxiously waiting to try. The 2016 growing season was one of the best in recent memory in Montalcino, and if we look back in time, this vintage marks the year Biondi-Santi was sold to a French group. The prestigious 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva proves a mighty collector's bottle that will undoubtedly gain in complexity and depth with careful bottle age. The wine offers wild nuances of forest berry and tart cherry, and there are herbal side notes as well as floral tones of dried violet and lilac. The tannins are soft, powdery and feel like they melt away on the palate.   JD 98 (3/2023): The 2016 Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva is layered and unfolds in the glass with incense, baking spice, ripe red cherry, and cedar. It has more concentration and length through the mid-palate and offers an impeccable balance of structure, ripeness, and tension. It is expressive on the nose, but it is even more impactful at this stage with its intensity through the palate, with nearly electric energy of wild raspberry, rose petal, tea leaf, and orange zest. Allow for cellaring another 3-4 years. Drink 2026-2046. Audrey Frick.   VM 96 (12/2022): Savory depths of sage, red currants, underbrush, dried roses, worn leather, hints of iodine and cedar smolder up from the darkly alluring 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. This impresses first with its purity, then with its energy, seamlessly silky and refined, yet almost racy in style, with saline-infused wild berries and nuances of sour citrus that drench the palate, lifted by a flourish of mint. The 2016 finishes with crystalline tannins, creating an almost-crunchy sensation, as tart red fruits and nuances of licorice slowly taper off. There’s an invigorating feel to the 2016 Riserva that I’ve never witnessed from a bottle of Biondi Santi Brunello, which, coupled with a depth of beautifully pure and delineated fruits, makes it a total pleasure to taste. 	VM 94 (5/2011): The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is remarkably harmonious at this young stage, quite a departure at Biondi-Santi. The 2006 shows dazzling richness and integrity in its powerful fruit in a totally captivating, sensual style. This is a beautifully centered, complete Brunello with a bright future ahead of it. The Brunello was fermented in cement and aged for three years in cask.

	VM 96 (12/2015): Biondi Santi’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the more controversial wines of the night. Some tasters admire the wine’s classical austerity and potential, but for others the wine is too tight to deliver real pleasure. There is little question the Biondi Santi needs time, but it is in my view impressive on this night, even if it is not as sexy as many other wines. Antonio Galloni.

	WA 97+ (2/2021): The Biondi-Santi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino exudes dark, velvety fruit and concentration while maintaining the signature elegance, suppleness and lithe personalty that distinguishes the iconic Il Greppo estate. I found this new release to be quite distinctive and exquisitely beautiful, setting it apart from many of the past vintages we are most familiar with. This 2015 edition is dark, exuberant and bold, but precise, focused and sharp as well. It will live for years in your cellar, but tasted now in its infancy, the wine shows blackberry, dried cherry, plum and dark cassis. Those dark fruit tones segue to a rich presentation of tar, spice, earth, tobacco and sweet balsam herb. The bouquet offers seamless and smooth transitions. This warm and sunny growing season favored richness and phenolic weight. Wines from Biondi-Santi are made for the long haul, and the fresh acidity that characterizes this estate is the principle reason why. However, I'd argue that this wine from 2015 will evolve over the years not only thanks to the freshness but more so thanks to the important structure of this solid and profound wine.   JD 97 (3/2021): The 2015 Brunello is highly complex, with pine resin, clove, blood orange, and rose-hip. It offers a grounding richness and warmth from the vintage while maintaining transparency and lift. Structured and with a long finish, this bottle showed no sign of demise over several days. Cellar 1-5 years and enjoy over the next 20 years. (Drink between 2021-2041). Audrey Frick.   VM 95 (11/2020): The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Annata is an understated beauty that takes some time to blossom in the glass. It’s a sweetly spiced and floral expression of the vintage, blending ripe cherries and strawberries with dusty earth, hints of sage and violets. A refreshing air of mint and lavender develops over time. It’s elegance personified on the palate, seamless and silky-smooth, with a classic and pure expression of red fruits and saline-minerals, as fine tannins slowly mount toward the close. Hints of licorice, white pepper and savory herbs linger through the lightly structured finale. While youthfully firm, the 2015 is already so enjoyable today, yet a few years of cellaring will reveal even further depths. I tasted the 2015 tasted multiple times over the course of a day and it only got better with air. Simply stunning! (Drink between 2024-2034). Eric Guido.

	VM 97 (12/2021): The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark stallion of a wine that showcases both the depth and radiance of the vintage. At first, its bouquet is dark and earthy, yet quickly blossoms into an enthralling mix of musky red currants, wild peppery herbs, dusty rose and worn leather. While satiny in feel, it’s also sleek and lively, with a vibrant burst of sweet and sour citrus that enlivens its notes of tart cranberry and pomegranate, all wound tightly in a web of saline-minerals. Violet and lavender tones arch across the palate over a core of silky tannins that nicely frame the experience, as a hint of balsamic spice slowly tapers off. The 2016 is one of the most deep and balanced Brunellos that I’ve ever experienced from Biondi Santi. If this is the Annata, then I can only imagine what the Riserva might bring to the table. Something of note is that in 2016, production was down by 15% following the abundant 2015 vintage and the dry conditions in the early part of the season. Eric Guido.

	VM 96 (2/2024): The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a showstopper, opening with a stunning bouquet of sour cherry, spiced citrus and clove complicated by traces of worn leather. This is silky and supple, showing ripe red fruit and mineral tones. It slowly gains tension toward the close but remains energized by zesty acidity all the way through. Finishing saline and long, with adolescent tannins that still grip the palate, the 2013 tapers off remarkably fresh, leaving hints of cranberry and licorice. This is on the verge of entering its drinking window, with many years of positive evolution in store for patient collectors. (Drink between 2025-2040). Eric Guido.   WA 96 (2/2018): Canalicchio di Sopra's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is tight and firm at its core, with qualities that bode very well for its aging potential. That compact core is surrounded by many thick layers of dark fruit and spice that are expressive and expansive. Those outer layers give the wine softness and some immediate accessibility, even at this early stage in its life. All summed up, this is a very complete and characteristic Brunello that offers stunning quality for medium or long-term drinking.

	JS 95 (1/2015): So much dried-lemon and orange-peel character here. Wet leaf, wet earth, stone and lightly smoked meat. Full body, integrated tannins and a savory, tangy finish. Fleshy and yummy. Fabulous deal. Drink or hold on release.   VM 93 (2/2015): Bright red cherries, plums, smoke, tobacco, flowers, cedar and spices are all beautifully delineated in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. Vibrant and lifted throughout, the 2010 captures the freshness of the vintage in spades. Already soft and accessible, the 2010 can be enjoyed now or cellared for a decade or so.

	WA 95 (2/2015): Caparzo's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna la Casa opens to dark intensity with blackish-garnet undertones. The wine exhibits muscle and power with a large array of aromatic qualities that include dried cherry, spice, leather, tobacco, licorice and tar. It aspires to high complexity and intensity and it delivers on that promise. In the mouth, it shows beautifully tame tannins and a silky texture. Brunello Vigna la Casa lasts many long minutes on the palate. The wine should hold steadily over the next 15 years.

	VM 91 (6/2009): Neri's 2004 Brunellos are immensely successful. I look forward with great anticipation to the 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto, which should be released some time next year. The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a big, fruit-driven wine. Made in a concentrated, opulent style, this Brunello offers tons of fruit and a round, soft personality. There isn't too much nuance in the wine today, but that should develop in bottle. The long, polished finish invites a second taste. For now, this remains one of the more overtly fruit-forward wines of the vintage. The entry-level Brunello spends roughly 40 months in large, neutral oak. Antonio Galloni.

	JS 96 (12/2014): Gorgeous aromas of sea salt, savory, smoked meats and dried fruits follow through to a full body, with fine tannins and a long and intense finish. So beautiful and enticing. Goes on for minutes. Excellent quality for the standard bottling of this winery. Better in 2016.   WA 96 (2/2015): The Outstanding 2010 Brunello di Montalcino gives you everything you want to see in a great wine, a great Tuscan wine. This monumental expression of Sangiovese delivers top-notch intensity with seamless integration of aromas. They span from dark fruit and Morello cherry to chocolate, spice, licorice, balsam herb and rosemary sprig. The energy and vitality of the vintage is locked perfectly within. This Brunello exhibits especially soft, silky tannins with long persistence and momentum. There is nothing out of place and the price tag is certainly not exaggerated for this level of excellence.   VM 91 (2/2015): Black cherries, plums, lavender, smoke, spices and wild flowers jump from the glass in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. Today, the flavors are bright and primary, while the tannins are tightly wound. I would prefer to drink the 2010 sooner rather than later, though, while the fruit retains its vibrancy. The Brunello di Montalcino, often informally called the 'white label', is aged exclusively in cask.

	JS 94 (7/2019): There’s beauty and drinkability to this wine that really is enticing with blueberry and cherry aromas, as well as hints of hot stone and licorice. Medium to full body, integrated tannins and a fresh and polished finish. Shows focus and brightness. Very drinkable now, but better in a year or two. Try in 2021.

	WA 96 (4/2010): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto is deep and powerful in its smoke, tar, spices, scorched earth and plums. The wine has shut down quite a bit since I last tasted it a few months ago, and the refined silky tannins that were present a while back have turned decidedly virile. Still, the wine’s pedigree is impossible to miss, and the only thing this needs is time, probably lots of it. Pretty scents of soy, smoke and incense inform the long, elegant finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.   VM 90 (7/2010): Fully saturated deep ruby-red. Very deep aromas of ripe red berries and licorice, plus nuances of minerals and graphite. Then dense, rich and smooth in the mouth, with concentrated flavors of red and dark cherry, smoky plum and flint. Finishes long and smooth, with no hint of excess alcohol or of tired fruit-two characteristics that mar many '04 Brunellos. This is no doubt due to the Cerretalto vineyard, which is cooler and ripens later than many in the zone. That said, I really dislike the note of graphite on the nose, and never want to find this element in a Brunello. Even though I understand owner Giacomo Neri's assertion that this note is typical of the Cerretalto vineyard, I have always scored this wine lower for its presence.

	JD 98 (3/2023): A rich ruby hue, the 2012 Brunello Di Montalcino Cerretalto is ripe and pure, with kirsch, polished leather, anise, and cedar. It is full-bodied without weight and has an elegant yet expansive mouthfeel, with ripe tannins and a velvety texture balanced with fresh acidity. It has fantastic length, with notes of wild raspberry, red plum, dried rose petal, and sweet herbs. 	JS 100 (1/2021): This is a momentous wine with incredible power and structure that has so much minerality and crushed-stone character to the black cherries and blueberries. Full-bodied and tannic, yet the tannins are layered and polished with a glorious, creamy and juicy texture that coats your mouth. It goes on for minutes. Incredible wine. Try after 2025.   WA 98+ (11/2020): Of these new releases from this benchmark estate, the Casanova di Neri 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto is my favorite wine. This Riserva is larger than life with ripe fruit, raspberry, cherry, spice, cola, root beer, mesquite and cedar. The wine offers a flashy and generous quality of fruit that unfolds over time with a multifaceted and multi-layered presentation. One thing that stands out here is the acidity that is bracing and tart at first but then succumbs to an important supporting role, rendering lasting freshness and persistence to the finish. With time, you get a flash of cherry and crème de cassis that seals the deal.   VM 95 (11/2020): The 2015 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto is remarkably fresh and balanced despite its large-scale persona. Minty herbs give way to raspberry and cherry with exotic spices and a hint of pine resin. It boasts depths of silky textures; yet it remains juicy and full of energy, displaying ripe red and black fruits, laced with salty minerals, as hints of cinnamon and baker’s chocolate form toward the close. Fine tannins come forward on the finish, tugging at the cheeks, yet all under an air of sweet spice and violet florals. As young as this is today, it’s hard to put the glass down, and I can only imagine the depths that will be revealed with five or more years of cellaring. Eric Guido.

	JS 93 (12/2010): Very fresh for a 2005 with dense fruit and silky tannins. Not the same depth of fruit of the 2004 or the 2006 for that matter, but it is clearly one of the best 2005’s in my opinion. I suggest another couple of years of cellar age. Great finesse, richness, and freshness for the vintage.   WA 93 (6/2009): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova reveals layers of dark perfumed fruit intermingled with French oak, spices, minerals, violets and licorice. The Tenuta Nuova is impressive mostly for its textural richness and sheer depth, both qualities it has in spades. The finish is long, sweet and pure. Here, too, the wine will need at least a few years in bottle before its full range of aromas and flavors emerges. Neri gave the Tenuta Nuova 30 months in medium-sized French oak tonneaux. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2024.

	WA 93 (4/2010): The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is quite a bit darker and richer than the straight Brunello. Cherries, plums, spices and French oak meld together beautifully in this silky, textured red. In 2005 the Tenuta Nuova boasts fabulous overall balance in a fairly restrained style for this bottling. Kirsch, roses and spices linger on the dark, enveloping finish. This is a terrific effort from Casanova di Neri. The Tenuta Nuova is made from vineyards in Le Cetine and Pietradonice, both located in the southern part of Montalcino. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.   JS 93 (12/2010): It may not be 2004, but this is a rich and dense wine with lots of blueberry and dried berry. Full bodied, with lovely combination of fruit and lightly toasted oak. Enjoy now or let it age for a few years.   VM 91 (7/2010): Good full ruby-red. Aromatic nose combines red raspberry, superripe red cherry and dried herbs (rosemary, sage, bay leaf). Then sweet, suave and wonderfully fine-grained, with fleshy red cherry and red plum flavors given shape by harmonious acidity. Finishes with excellent length, but becomes a touch austere on the back.

	JS 97 (12/2012): This is not the perfect 100-point 2006, but damn close. Loads of black cherries and spices on the nose. Full-bodied, with a beautiful core of fruit. Long and gorgeous finish. This is so long and beautiful to taste. Lasts for minutes. Try after 2015.   VM 95+ (4/2012): The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova saturates the palate with masses of super-ripe dark fruit, tar, licorice and new leather. The Tenuta Nuova is an especially full-bodied, seamless Sangiovese deeply influenced by the Mediterranean climate of this warm site in the south of Montalcino. Layers of fruit build to an effortless, resonant finish laced with considerable aromatic nuance. This is another terrific showing from Giacomo Neri and his talented team. 	JS 94 (2/2013): This is very floral with blackberries on the nose. It's full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a ripe fruit, caramel and berry aftertaste. Delicious for the vintage. One of the wines of the vintage. Better in 2015.   WA 92 (6/2013): The estate’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is bold, frank and direct. Mocha, plums, black cherries, savory herbs and flowers are some of the notes that take shape in the glass. Overall, the 2008 is a fairly mid-weight Tenuta Nuova, with less structure than the 2006 or 2007, but with plenty of early appeal. The dense, layered finish is highly appealing. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.   VM 90+ (8/2013): (15% alcohol): Bright, full ruby-red. Red cherry, red licorice and pungent herbs on the nose. Supple, sweet and silky on entry, with reticent but pure red berry and flint flavors complicated by fresh herbs, flowers and a wild element of underbrush; firmed by solid acidity. Finishes with substantial building tannins and serious structure. Very suave and classically dry, but I would have liked a little more fruit for a higher score. The bottle's label carries a 30th vendemmia designation.

	WA 95 (2/2018): The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is a direct and powerful wine from a hot vintage. Dark fruit aromas segue to candied cherry, moist pipe tobacco, balsam herb and dark granite stone. In the mouth, this is a compact and hard-bodied wine that still needs time to flesh out and relax. Like all of Casanova di Neri's wine, this Brunello offers a unique level of volume and fullness that you don't easily find in the other wines of Montalcino.   VM 93 (2/2016): The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is dark, sensual and inviting, with lovely textural depth and fine balance. Macerated dark cherry, plum, smoke, lavender and spice flesh out in a succulent, expressive Brunello that should drink well with minimal cellaring. (Drink between 2016-2026). Antonio Galloni.

	WA 96 (2/2018): This edition of Casanova di Neri's celebrated single-vineyard wine opens to a luminous garnet color and exuberant fruit aromas. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova offers a lot to the bouquet, from sweet cherry aromas to savory tones of tobacco and leather. This wine shows a powerful inner motor of flavor concentration and density that propels it forward. All that density and richness wraps thickly over the palate. This is a lasting wine of brawn and muscle.   JS 95 (9/2018): Very fresh and floral on the nose with rose petals, cherries and hot stones. Medium to full body, linear and fine tannins and a fresh finish. So linear and focused. Wow. Drink in two or three years.

	JS 99 (9/2019): The purity of fruit in this wine really strikes you with black cherries, combined with sage, lavender and rosemary. Extremely aromatic. Full-bodied, yet so tight and polished with incredible tannin structure that gives the wine an endless mouth feel of caressing tannins, acidity and fruit. There’s a fabulous saltiness and oyster-shell undertone to the fruit. Unique. Drinkable already, but this year there’s the structure to last decades.

	JS 99 (11/2020): Aromas of blackberries, cherries, violets and bark with mahogany. It’s full-bodied and chewy with intense tannins that are layered and focused. The fruit is pure and purposeful, yet not over done. Wonderful strength and purity to this. Class is the word. Try it after 2024.   WA 97+ (11/2020): This is one of my sweetheart wines from Montalcino. The Casanova di Neri 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova offers a long list of aromas on an ever-shifting and fluid bouquet. You get bright cherry, rose potpourri, black truffle, caramel, butterscotch, sandalwood, road pavement and chalky mineral. In fact, each time I come back to this wine, that mineral element seemed to grow in intensity and scope. The wine offers a grounded fruit side that is contrasted nicely against a grounded oak component. The mouthfeel is creamy and long, and the wine shows terrific tannic integration. When you come back hours later, you might find black olive, bresaola and licorice.   VM 96 (11/2020): The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova drawing you in with a display of exotic brown spice, mint and cedar dust. Further coaxing unlocks depths of cherry, plum, hints of dark chocolate and roses. It coasts along a medium-bodied frame with velvety richness, complemented by polished red and black fruits while contrasted by brisk acids and hints of sour citrus. This coats the teeth in concentration, as if you can feel the pulp, seeds and skins of its fruit, while a layer of fine tannin slowly grounds you back to earth. The Tenuta Nuova already has so much to give, yet it will be many years before it reaches its apex. Wow. Thinking back to my tasting of the 2015, I can’t say that the 2016 is necessarily a better wine, just a little less immediate. Either way, both wines are beautiful expressions of vintage. Eric Guido.

	VM 93 (11/2020): Sour cherries, spiced orange and dusty dried flowers open in the glass, as the 2016 Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino slowly blossoms. The textures are creamy, contrasted by cooling minerality and juicy acids, as tart red berries saturate under an air of sweet herbs and inner florals. This finishes dry yet long, with chewy tannins and remnants of crunchy red fruit. The 2016 Castelgiocondo needs some time to come together, yet it has all of the balance necessary to mature into a real beauty. Eric Guido.   WA 93 (11/2020): The Frescobaldi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino CastelGiocondo shows dark fruit, plum and spice. The wine offers good density and richness, but the aromatic intensity is downplayed compared to some of its peers from this classic vintage. Other than that, all the wine's elements are in the right place with cherry, wild plum, rose and tilled earth. Production is an ample 300,000 bottles.   JS 95 (10/2020): Black-cherry and blackberry aromas with minerals and fresh flowers, following through to a full body with firm, silky tannins that are polished and intense. Lovely finesse and length. Drink after 2023.

A wine for decades ahead. Greatest Banfi red ever. Better in 2018.   WA 96 (3/2016): I'm confident this is the best wine (as a new release) I have tasted from Castello Banfi. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio Alle Mura offers rich intensity with seamless integration between its primary fruit aromas and background oak shadings. It is distinguished by elegant tones of licorice, dark mineral and cola that are associated with the six-year aging process required of Brunello Riserva. The bouquet shows enormous depth and fluid nuances of spice and chocolate that add plumpness, opulence and softness. The wine shows a rich and well extracted mouthfeel that is impressive both in terms of consistency and persistence. A bright flash of acidity bodes well for this wine's future cellar evolution.

	JD 95 (1/2025): Brooding and herbal, the 2012 Brunello Di Montalcino has a dark red color and aromas of toasted anise, black cherry liqueur, sage, pine sap, and tobacco. It fills the palate with a refined and elegant but ripe feel, with silky tannins, generous fruit, and a hint of dark mineral undercurrents. Savory and long on the palate, it still offers a good deal of longevity. Drink 2025-2035. Audrey Frick.   WA 95 (2/2018): Cerbaiona's 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is a nuanced and delicate wine that offers ample power, intensity and length. What the wine does best is paint a portrait of the grape in its most pure and naked state. It offers crisp outlines with loads of wild berry, blue flower and moist earth on the inside. That balanced ensemble of flavors adds to the long and polished persistence you feel in the mouth. Give this wine another 10 years of aging to best appreciate its slow evolution and budding complexity.   VM 94 (1/2023): Only a slight fading at the rim reveals the 10 years of maturity that the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino has undergone, yet from its bouquet—a brilliant mix of dusty rose, dried strawberries, plum skins, lavender and a hint of tobacco—you’d never know. “Ethereal” is the word, as silken textures wash across the palate weightlessly, yet unleash an array of wild berry fruits, cloves, allspice and dried citrus that totally captivates. Still lightly tannic yet amazingly energetic, the 2012 tapers off potent and long, leaving nuances of licorice and a hint of balsamic spice that lingers on and on. There is no fear of decline here; in fact, it’s still on the steady path of evolution, and collectors who have the 2012 Cerbaiona should consider themselves very lucky. It’s a total charmer. 	WA 88 (2/2018): The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino shows more opulent and ripe fruit than you get from many of the other new releases from this cooler vintage. This is a darkly saturated expression that delivers a rich bouquet of succulent plum and blackberry. There are lingering tones of scorched earth, sweet spice and tobacco at the back. There is a point of astringency in the mouth that should smooth out with a few more years of cellar aging.

	WA 92 (6/2009): The estate’s 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous for its clarity, elegance and precision. Medium in body, the wine reveals ripe red cherries, mint, minerals, tobacco and licorice in a taut, medium-bodied style. Today the Brunello is fairly tightly wound, but it should be a beauty once the tannins soften somewhat. This is a wine of grace, purity and superb balance. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.   JS 91 (2/2011): Love the fresh mushroom, dried dark fruits and cedar aromas that follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a tangy finish. The acidity is a little aggressive but it's very Brunello in character. No reason to wait.   VM 88+ (8/2009): Bright, dark red. Black cherry, menthol and truffley underbrush on the reduced, rather bound-up nose. Rich, broad, ripe and savory; in an elegant if rather primary style, with good vinosity and firm, building tannins giving the wine very good grip. I picked up a slight dryness on the back, but this unevolved wine needs at least a few years in the cellar. Not quite up to my expectations, though.

Drink now or hold.   WA 93 (5/2011): The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino emerges from the glass with a finely knit bouquet of tobacco, sweet herbs, licorice, leather and red cherries. The wine shows lovely depth, richness and polish in its engaging personality. The warm radiance of the fruit flows through effortlessly to the long, creamy finish. This is a terrific effort from Col d’Orcia. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.   VM 91+ (8/2011): Good deep red. Redcurrant and raspberry fruit aromas complicated by licorice and pungent minerality. Sweet, supple and harmonious; concentrated and fat but a tad reduced today and not yet expressing itself. Finishes with serious, chewy tannins that call for at least several years of aging. Quite promising, but lay it down.

	WA 94 (6/2013): Sweet, rich, lush and layered, yet also remarkably light on its feet, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino dazzles from start to finish. Sweet roses, red berries, flowers, mint and orange peel all take an appearance in this utterly impeccable polished Brunello. I imagine the 2008 will still be a special wine at age 30. The aromas are naturally still quite primary, so some cellaring is advisable. The brutal August hailstorm took with it a full 40% of the production, but left behind a strikingly beautiful Brunello endowed with seemingly endless layers of fruit and fabulous overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2038.   JS 88 (2/2013): This is a little earthy and funky with some berry character. Medium to full body, with chewy dry tannins and a medium finish. Needs another year or two to soften.   VM 88 (8/2013): (14.5% alcohol): Bright ruby-red. A whiff of alcohol on the nose stunts the aromas of ripe red cherry, faded violet and vanilla. Sweet and rather suave on the palate, with dusty flavors of red plum and cherries macerated in alcohol. Finishes with moderate length and noticeable alcoholic warmth.

	VM 92+ (2/2015): Col d'Orcia's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vendemmia is all finesse. Sweet floral and spiced notes open up in the glass, followed by veins of bright red stone fruits. Hints of orange peel and white pepper add an attractive, beguiling upper register of aromatics. The 2010 is still a bit raw and much less expressive than it was from barrel, but it is promising.   JS 92 (12/2014): A traditional styled Brunello with nuts, cherries and plums on the nose and palate. Full to medium body, firm tannins and a fresh and lively finish. Delicious now but better in 2016.   WA 91 (2/2015): The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is surprisingly subdued on first nose and a little unsteady on its feet at this young stage. Give it time and the wine gracefully brings out a long chorus line of aromas that hit the high notes and well and the low ones in slow increments. The bouquet is redolent of small forest berry, white ash, smoke, licorice, balsam herb and delicate spice. It's important to underline the extremely elegant and feminine personality of this wine. This Brunello has no place to go but up in terms of its complexity and evolution. Put it aside for at least five more years before popping the cork.

	VM 95 (11/2020): Dusty earth gives way to dried roses, incense, hints of cedar, sage, currants and black cherries in a display that makes the 2016 Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino a very special experience. It’s nuanced and perfumed from start to finish, boasting silky textures contrasted by tart berries and minerals, but with sweet tannins that frame the expression perfectly. Its inner sweetness is balanced by bright acids, creating an almost-juicy sensation, right up until the moment you realize that your palate is aching with youthful tension. 	JD 94 (3/2023): The 2017 Brunello Di Montalcino is generous with cherry lozenge, Mediterranean herbs, lavender, and scorched mineral earth, and it is full-bodied, with black cherry, tea leaf, turned soil, and charred rosemary. The palate is full and generous, with ripe yet present tannins, notes of plum, blackberry, and cedar, light smokiness on the finish. Drink 2024-2040. (Drink between 2024-2040).   WA 93 (2/2022): Made with certified organic fruit, the Col d'Orcia 2017 Brunello di Montalcino definitely shows some of the heat of the vintage, and I think this impression is reinforced by the location of this property on the southern side of the appellation, where temperatures are normally a few degrees higher on average. The winemaking team at this historic estate is not deterred by hot vintages, and their winemaking protocol captures the freshness and brightness of Sangiovese nonetheless. In fact, the alcohol content here measured 14.5%, which is almost contained, compared to some other wines in this report from cooler subzones. A learned comfort with organic farming is key to this wine's detailed aromas of black cherry, crushed rose and Mediterranean herb.   VM 92 (12/2021): The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino wafts up with a dusty display of cherry, wild berries, crushed stone and savory herbs. This is silky and elegant in feel, offering balanced acidity matched by masses of tart red and black berry fruits, along with firming tannins. It’s long, rich and dark with haunting inner florals, but also a surprisingly classic structure. Despite a 30% loss of production in 2017, Col d"Orcia made a balanced and highly enjoyable Brunello. 	JD 93 (3/2023): Full and enveloping with purple floral perfume, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino is lush with violets, blue fruit, and black raspberry and leather. This moves seamlessly to the palate, where it takes on even more depth, with iron richness, meat, red cherry, raspberry, cedar, and fresh soil. A balanced wine for its style, it is a lovely expression where more warmth is not needed. Drink 2025-2040. Audrey Frick.   VM 93 (12/2022): Masses of crushed cherries and cloves give way to nuances of spiced citrus peels and cedar as the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino comes to life in the glass. This is round and pliant on the palate, with a balanced inner sweetness contrasting its mineral-tinged acids and tart wild berry fruits. Grippy tannins mount toward the close, yet fail to slow the 2018’s momentum, as notes of salted licorice are left to resonate under an air of dried roses. This is a deep and characterful rendition of Col d'Orcia’s Brunello, but patience will be required to unlock all of its charms. 	VM 93 (5/2011): The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is typical Sangiovese from the southern part of the zone in a cool year. A gorgeous, translucent red, the Riserva offers up a classic profile of red fruit, tobacco, underbrush, mint and crushed flowers. The 2005 naturally has quite a bit of primary fruit left, but the real joy will come in another 5-10 years when the full range of tertiatry aromas is fully developed. This understated beauty is not an immediate wine, but in time it will thrill those who can look beyond instant gratification. An impeccably long, mineral-laced finish points to a bright future. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.   JS 94 (7/2011): Ripe fruit, with dried cherries and flowers. Full and soft, with velvety tannins and a fruity finish. Really delicious now.

	JS 96 (10/2021): Plenty of complexity to this, with cherry, plum, blackberry and hints of cedar and stone. Full-bodied with layered, velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Punctuated and defined for the 2017 vintage. Drinkable now, but better after 2023.   WA 95 (2/2022): The Fuligni 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is a beautiful wine, and it shines a much-deserved spotlight on one of the most consistent estates in Montalcino. It is bright and luminous with a dark ruby shine. The bouquet reveals deeply layered tones of red cherry, wild berry, rose, earth and candied violets. Give the wine an extra twirl or two, and you get some rosemary and lavender. Soft dusty mineral and limestone also appear. I'd definitely put this bottle on a short list of the most recommended bottles from the 2017 vintage.

	JD 94 (3/2023): A wonderful energy seams through the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino, with layered aromas of cherry licorice, leather, spice box, and dried flowers. Medium-bodied, with vibrant tension driving the wine forward through its linear profile, it has fine tannins, with a refreshing edge of acidity and notes of dried cranberry, orange peel, and salty earth. It is a stellar wine to cellar for a couple of years and drink over the following 10-15.   VM 93 (12/2022): It takes a good amount of time for the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino to open in the glass, as a cloud of white smoke gives way to a sweetly scented mix of dried roses, sugar-dusted cherries and hints of exotic spice. This is a round and supple 2018, communicating elegance through its velvety textures, polished ripe red fruits and cascading inner violet florals. There’s opulence here, yet also the acidity to balance, as the 2018 tapers off long with classically refined tannins, yet leaves the palate perfectly reset for another sip. Frankly, it’s hard to put this glass down. There will be no Riserva produced in 2018, and so all of that juice was used to bolster this open-knit and seductive Brunello. Eric Guido.

This is pure pleasure on the palate, displaying both an opulence of fruit, yet also total poise and refinement, as sour berries find an energizing lift from juicy acidity. The 2018 doesn’t miss a beat, tapering off with rounded tannins while lingering on the palate for well up to a minute with an energizing burst of citrus, nuances of sweet rose and licorice. This is already so pretty today, yet it also possesses the balanced structure to mature beautifully, which isn’t found in many Brunello of this vintage. What a darling. Eric Guido.   WA 95 (3/2023): Alessandro Mori's Il Marroneto 2018 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a spicy bouquet with hints of cumin and white pepper that fold seamlessly into bright cherry, blueberry and cassis. The trick to this wine is balance, as no one side pulls stronger than the other. More importantly, this Brunello still has life and vibrant energy despite 39 months of aging in oak casks. Precisely because this bottle tastes so good now, I see little reason to wait further. This 21,470-bottle release is a delight.   JD 94 (3/2023): The 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a deep and youthful ruby hue. It is highly expressive with medicinal herbs, sour black cherry, leather, clove, and burnt orange. Medium to full-bodied, with tangy acidity and ripe yet angular tannins, it has a complex profile, with currant, dried flowers, and dusty saline earth. 	VM 99 (11/2020): Simply put, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie is spellbinding. It’s wonderfully primary and intense. You could lose yourself in this vivid display of crushed ripe berries with sweet mint and zests of orange peel, dusted in confectioners’ and autumnal spice. It soothes with its velvety textures, coating all that it touches in masses of dark red fruit, liquid violet florals, notes of lavender and sage. Currently, the 2016 is youthfully dense yet so complex, almost salty and savory at times, while nearly enveloping its fine tannic structure right up until the end. This is a classic in the making and one of the most complete young Brunellos I’ve ever tasted. This bottle was revisited over the course of two days and only got better with each taste. Eric Guido.

	JS 97 (10/2015): Intense aromas of dried citrus and meat with hints of rose bush and fresh rosemary. Full body with full, velvety tannins and a decadent, rich finish. Fascinating flavors of spice, citrus and meat. Loads of fruit. From biodynamically grown grapes. Better in 2016.   WA 94+ (2/2015): I am absolutely impressed by the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino from La Serena. The style is bold and far-reaching (the alcohol clocks in at 15%) yet the volume is never turned up so high as to drown out the delicate layers of cassis, balsam herb, rosemary and dried tobacco that flutter weightlessly at the back. In addition to the high quality of fruit, the wine exhibits seductive notes of spice, tobacco and dried jerky. This excellent Brunello has not yet started its bottle evolution. Its prime drinking window won't open for another six to ten years so you'll need to be extremely patient.

	VM 94 (11/2020): The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Le Ragnaie mixes nuances of wild herbs and stone dust with bright notions of strawberry and dried roses. It’s silky and pliant upon entry yet quickly gains tactile depths through salty mineral tones, as floral-laced red berries cascade across the palate. The symmetry here is impeccable, as is its purity of fruit, with fine tannins that result in a structured finale. That said, it should only take a few years of cellaring to bring this fully into focus. Often referred to as the “White Label,” this blends fruit from Le Ragnaie’s vineyards located throughout Montalcino to create a balanced expression of each vintage. It’s a wonderful introduction to the Le Ragnaie style. Better after 2023.   WA 94 (11/2020): The only new releases from Le Ragnaie fitted with a white label instead of a black one, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is the most accessible and near-term in the portfolio. This is a very elegant and perfumed expression of Sangiovese with lifted floral aromas that recall blue flower and wild rose. Beyond those delicate tones, you get cherry, cassis and other classic aromas linked to Sangiovese. This wine draws on a blend of fruit from various vineyard sites with high and low elevations. Production is 27,700 bottles.

	WA 94 (2/2018): Le Ragnaie's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Fornace is a slightly more robust and structured expression. It has a sturdier vinous exoskeleton, so to speak. For this reason, it needs longer to age and will undoubtedly benefit from more years in your cellar. In fact, I tasted this wine several times over the course of many hours and was delighted by the steady and positive evolution it showed. Given time, the wine gives wild berry and earthy tones that come together with encouraging symmetry.   VM 93+ (4/2018): Dark red with a pale rim. Aromas of raspberry, violet, iris, licorice and sweet spices are accented by white pepper. Ripe but vibrant, this highly concentrated, seamless wine boasts nicely integrated acidity and light peppery and strong floral qualities giving lift to the explosive midpalate. Finishes with sweet, building tannins and superb fruity persistence complicated by notes of tar and licorice. Remarkably rich, pliant and distinctive traditional Brunello. 	VM 95 (12/2023): The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is rich and darkly alluring with a pleasantly rustic touch, as a burst of crushed black cherries and autumnal spice is lifted by suggestions of mint and white smoke. This opens with a lovely inner sweetness, showing remarkable purity and enveloping, plush textures as ripe red and blue fruits swirl throughout, guided by vibrant acidity. A tactile mineral tinge lingers along with gently grippy tannins as the 2016 tapers off with a sour sensation that keeps the mouth watering as a savory herbal thrust slowly fades. 	WA 97 (4/2012): The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is more than a worthy follow up to the spectacular 2006. Freshly cut flowers, violets, licorice, leather and tar meld into layers of dark fruit in a dazzling display of elegance and power. Silky tannins and expressive perfumed notes both add further refinement on the huge, explosive finish. The combination of ripeness of the year allied to a classic sense of structure is immensely appealing. This is one of the few 2007s I tasted that still needs time in the cellar, even though today it is flat-out stunning. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.   VM 95 (7/2012): Bright deep red. Subtle, precise aromas of raspberry, minerals, smoke and flowers hint at a liqueur-like ripeness; there's something almost Burgundian here. Dense, thick and compellingly sweet, with Outstanding chewy depth and sufficient energy to its sappy red berry and mineral flavors. Utterly seamless Brunello with chewy, lush tannins and Outstanding lingering sweetness. A very ripe wine for the vintage, but it all works. Stephen Tanzer.

	VM 96 (8/2011): Bright dark red with ruby tones. Black fruits, licorice, incense and minerals on the nose; smells like a head shop. Utterly silky and perfumed on entry, then tightly coiled in the middle, with a deep sweetness leavened by a saline quality. This very young Brunello boasts a terrific tannic structure and saturates the entire palate. But the rising, expanding finish shows zero excess weight. With time in the recorked bottle, this wine showed an increasingly plush, spherical texture and building minerality.   WA 95 (5/2011): The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille is a tighter, darker and ulimtately more inward Brunello than the Rennina. Dark wild cherries, plums, tobacco, licorice, spices and menthol are wrapped around a substantial frame of tannic heft. Ideally the wine needs at least another few years in bottle, but it is impossible to miss the wine’s fabulous sense of poise and harmony. As always, Sugarille is a Brunello that speaks with a distinctly Piedmontese accent. It is a beautiful wine by any measure. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.

	VM 95+ (4/2018): Deep red-ruby. Delicate aromas of flinty red cherry and herbs complicated by hints of mocha and lifted by a bright violet topnote. Dense, rich and concentrated but light on its feet, offering a very polished mouthfeel thanks to serious but noble tannins that nicely frame the refined, steely red fruit flavors. Finishes long and very elegant. Just like the 2013 Brunello Rennina, this also has 15% alcohol but is so well balanced that you can hardly tell (unlike with the Rennina). Knockout young Brunello from Gaja, one of the very best in memory. Ian d'Agata.   JD 95 (12/2018): The 2013 Sugarille is more classic in style than the Rennina yet is still a ripe, sexy beast of a Brunello. Ripe cherries, red currants, spice, and balsamic notes all flow to a concentrated, medium to full-bodied effort that has nicely integrated acidity, solid mid-palate depth, and enough ripe tannins to keep it drinking nicely for 10-15+ years or more. It's a beautiful wine.   JS 94 (11/2017): A very aromatic red. Typical sangiovese aromas of cherry and rose petal with hints of bark. Full body, firm and silky tannins. A racy linear line runs through it. Tight and firm now. Give it two or three years to soften.   WA 94 (2/2018): The single-vineyard 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille has a tighter core and a blacker heart compared to the Rennina. This wine is momentarily more difficult to penetrate and comprehend. It makes a more abrupt first impression but then relaxes and reveals more of its character only after it has spent extra time in your company. Then, it becomes suddenly exuberant and loud. This is a dynamic expression of Sangiovese with bold ripe fruit, spice and balsam notes to carry it forward during cellar aging. This vintage offers firmness and strength. Some 20,000 bottles were produced (of both Sugarille and Rennina, respectively).

	Decanter 93 (2/2023): Hickory smoked bbq sauce and ketchup on the nose - sweet, savoury leather and ripe fruit aromas. Bright and vertical, supple but also a little dry from the start, the tannis filling the mouth with a chalky, powdery grip - feels concentrated and intense right now and as a result some of the fruit friendliness has been lost. Acidity is there giving the base and keeping things lifted but the flavours are more savoury. Lightly framed with detailed aspects and a sense of verticality on the palate. (Drink between 2024-2040)

	VM 93+ (2/2016): The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is rich, sensual and inviting. Wonderfully open-knit and polished, the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most intriguing wines of the year. High-toned aromatics, with a touch of volatile acidity, give the wine much of its unique personality. Macerated cherries, licorice, hard candy new leather and mint are all pushed forward. Readers should expect a somewhat eccentric Brunello. I have seen Brunellos with elevated volatile acidity develop into spectacular wines with years in bottle, but readers should know what they are getting into. Antonio Galloni.   WA 93 (3/2016): The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino offers an immediate sense of generosity and openness that makes it attractive on first impact. In this regard, 2011 is very different from the slow-to-reveal-itself 2010 vintage that proceeds it. Bold tones of dark cherry, plum, spice and resin rise to the top with enthusiasm and intensity. The wine holds back nothing. It shows a velvety texture that is rich and enduring. All the while, this Brunello remains faithful to its time honored traditions and its territorial roots.   JS 93 (2/2016): Savory and delicious with balance and finesse for a 2011 Brunello. Very fine indeed. Medium to full body, fresh and clean finish. Love the plum, berry and hazelnut character. A delicious successor to an superb 2010. 	VM 96 (11/2020): You can lose yourself in the bouquet of the 2016 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino. At one moment, the 2016 shows crushed cherries with autumnal spice; the next, it’s exotic florals and candied orange peels, and at another time flowery undergrowth, white smoke and wild berries. It’s unbelievably soft and pure, lifting the wine through saline-minerals, as sweet notes of cherry and raspberry begin to slowly saturate, yet what they leave behind is youthfully grippy tannins. With how structured the 2016 is today, it’s still enjoyable due to nervous acids and notes of sour citrus, which keep the expression fresh. The 2016 Poggio di Sotto Brunello is really a terrific effort and a classic in the making. Eric Guido.   JS 94 (10/2020): A chewy, dusty-textured red with lots of intense tannins and fresh blue fruit, as well as black cherries and some orange-peel undertones. 	VM 95 (12/2021): A captivating mix of ripe plums, strawberries, cloves, violet pastille, balsam herbs and white smoke emanates from the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino. This is undeniably elegant in feel, showing a weight unexpected from a young Poggio di Sotto, yet working in perfect harmony, with tart cherries and wild berries drenching the palate in primary concentration, as saline-minerals and brisk acids add energy and verve. There’s simply so much going on here that each return to the glass reveals something new. The tannins are sweet and rounded, and while structured, this remains fully satiating and fresh, as hints of lavender and black currant slowly fade. It’s totally atypical of a young Poggio di Sotto, yet also a wonderfully unique expression of the vintage, one that should mature evenly in spite of the drastic climatic conditions. In order to create the best wine possible, severe selection reduced production by 40%, and there will be no Riserva from 2017, as all of that juice was added to the Brunello. What’s more, winemaker Luca Marrone chose to shorten the aging in wood by an entire year. It may not be classic in style, but the 2017 is a wine that’s not to be missed. Eric Guido.

That said, the team at Poggio did a fantastic job finding balance. Do make sure to give the 2018 a good amount of time, as I followed this for three days, through which it only got better and better. However, there's no escaping the power that remains just under the surface. You feel it budding and yearning to break free. Dark fruit aromas fold into crushed stone, grilled rosemary and blue flower. It's fun to taste this wine next to the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva because you really see how much further this vintage will require in the cellar. Both wines remain tight and nervous at this point but are full of potential. Drink between 2030-2055.   JD 98+ (2/2024): I was able to taste the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino three times for this report, and it’s one of the great wines of the vintage. It takes on a bit more muscular style for the Poggio di Sotto estate, but it retains the DNA of the estate at large with its outstanding clarity. It’s medium ruby-colored and reveals notes of pure cherry, anise, wildflowers, wet stone, and tea leaf. Structured and long on the palate, it has ripe, chiseled tannins, a balanced spine of acidity, and notes of salted orange through the finish, with a long-lasting perfume. Its transparency, balanced with its complexity, makes this one of the most intriguing wines, and if stored properly, it will only improve with time in the cellar. Drink 2027-2047. 	WA 96+ (2/2017): This wine floored me. The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a stunning beauty and a wine well worth the attention (if you can afford its lofty pricing aspirations). Thankfully, the beauty of the contents will help alleviate some of the sticker shock. This is a supple and silky expression with an infinite array of Sangiovese-based aromas. You'll recognize wild cassis, forest floor, autumnal leaf, button mushroom, grilled herb, rosemary, balsam herb and red rose petal. The effect is fragrant and delicate. The mouthfeel is equally ethereal and nuanced. With only 3,500 bottles made, not many of us will have the luxury of trying this beautiful wine. And, that is really too bad.   JS 94 (10/2017): Fresh and vivid aromas of cherry and flower with cream undertones. Full body, firm and very silky with a beautiful intensity and precision. Excellent winemaking here. Drink or hold.   VM 94-97 (2/2016): A total pleasure bomb, Poggio di Sotto's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva races across the palate with layers of intense, perfumed fruit and striking aromatics. Macerated dark cherry, spice, menthol and deeply spiced layers built to the huge, intense finish. The typical Poggio di Sotto volatile acidity is pretty much buried by the sheer density of the fruit. Best of all, the Riserva remains incredibly fresh and saline, which is so remarkable for the year. Antonio Galloni.

	WA 97 (1/2019): Poggio di Sotto reaches lofty new heights with the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. I spent a lot of time studying this wine and I tasted it at different intervals and from different bottles. Fruit ripened slowly over a long period of time over the course of this cool vintage, resulting in bright acidity and a firm tannic backbone. This wine follows the classic promise of traditional Brunello that, above all, softens and improves with age. This wine will meet those important goals. The bouquet offers evolved tones of dried cherry and crème de cassis with lovely spice, tar, licorice and balsam herb that culminate in increased complexity and persistence. I also taste some of the sharpness of the vintage, although it should subside with time. That point of tannic thorniness (that I associate with 2013) is the only thing preventing this wine from scoring even higher. Only 2,700 bottles were produced.   VM 94 (3/2019): Luminous deep red. Scented aromas of raspberry and blueberry lifted by violet, incense and cinnamon. Wonderfully sweet and penetrating but light on its feet, showcasing real class and energy, not to mention powerful minerality to the densely packed flavors of red berries, pomegranate, tobacco and wild herbs. Finishes very long, suave and subtle, with tannins that are very fine.   JS 90 (1/2019): Quite brashly pitched oak and spicy wood notes here. The palate has a thread of cedar and berry flavor and a herbal kick at the finish. Drink now.

	JD 98 (3/2021): The 2015 Brunello Riserva is austere upon opening and requires air to fully express its potential this early. It is perfumed and translucent, with raspberry fruit leather, black licorice, and rose petal. The palate is structured with drying tannins and mouthwatering acidity, noted by violets, dried herbs and crisp cherry fruit. The warmth of the 2015 vintage is present, though it remains refreshing, tension-driven, and persistent. The 2015 Riserva was aged in large Slavonian barrels for 52 months, and only 1300 bottles were produced. It is a wonderful and immensely pleasurable wine that will be a joy to revisit if the unlikely opportunity should ever arrive. Audrey Frick.

	WA 92+ (2/2014): From Giulio Salvioni’s La Cerbaiola estate, the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a fantastic wine with an impressive degree of darkness and broad aromas of Indian spice and ripe fruit. The 2008 Brunello presents a more voluptuous style than is customary with the tradition-minded Salvioni. The wine shows a good degree of baby fat that should serve it well as it ages over the next decade or longer. Drink: 2017-2028.   VM 91 (5/2016): The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most immediate and one-dimensional wines in this tasting. There is good depth and intensity in the glass, but much less of the layered quality and nuance of the very best years. Still, the 2009 remains young, with little in the way of aromatic development. All things considered, the 2009 is an excellent wine for satisfying the Salvioni urge while some of the more important surrounding vintages continue to develop in the cellar. 	WA 96+ (10/2020): After skipping over the 2014 vintage, Salvioni comes out swinging with the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino La Cerbaiola. This is a classic Brunello, with one foot firmly planted in a sense of place and the other in varietal purity. You really can't ask for more in a world-class Brunello such as this, hailing from a highly ranked vintage. Thanks to the sunny and warm growing season, the fiber and texture of this wine is a little looser and thicker compared to the cooler 2013 vintage. This beautiful wine, by contrast, delivers a knockout blow of saturated color loaded with dark cherry and blackberry aromas, all backed by spice, potting soil, crushed rocks, iron ore, ash, violets and blood orange. There is a subtle point of softness or sweetness on the finish that is a signature of this vintage.   VM 96 (4/2020): An earthy display of mineral-encased red fruits and wild herbs lifts from the glass, as the bouquet of the 2015 Salvioni Brunello di Montalcino evolves into a dark mix of ripe black cherry and dusty spices with overarching floral notes. On the palate, soft, enveloping ripe red fruits open up in an unexpectedly approachable and alluring display, with hints of sweet spice and inner florals. With more time, the flavors turn more to the savory spectrum, adding hints of dried herbs, with cascading minerals, all pushed forward by brisk acidity. The finish is long, as its staining red fruits are offset by zesty spices and acids, revealing just a hint of fine tannin beneath it all. This is an especially forward and easy-to-like expression of Salvioni, which I’m tempted to start drinking early, yet there’s enough primary fruit and acids to carry it over the medium term in the cellar. 	WA 94+ (11/2020): The Talenti 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a balanced and symmetrical wine with bright red cherry on the one hand and pretty spice and balsam herb on the other. The wine pours from the bottle with dark color saturation and ruby highlights. It shows no signs of fading, and that bright color intensity is a common thread in this vintage. There is a good amount of Sangiovese acidity that reinforces the lifted and buoyant style achieved here. It ages in both tonneau and botte for 30 months. Production is 35,000 bottles.   VM 94 (11/2020): The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino boasts a striking display of balsamic-tinged cherry and autumnal spice with a twist of sour citrus really appealing to the senses. It’s silky and pliant with a gorgeous display of ripe red and hints of black fruit. There’s a sweet and sour element here that I find quite attractive, as the 2016 gains a tactile feel toward the close through a mix of brisk acids and rounded tannins. The length and classic structure on the finish completes the expression, leaving dark florals and mineral earth tones. Talenti remains one of the best values in age-worthy Brunello in the market. That said, it’s also worth checking in on a bottle early to enjoy all of its primary intensity. Eric Guido.

Try after 2024.   JD 97 (3/2023): The 2016 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a rich ruby hue yet remains transparent, with savory, layered aromas of red cherry, saddle leather, cedar, damp forest floor, and wild herbs. It is medium to full-bodied, with a ripe yet structured feel, ample tension, and notes of red plum, currant, dried roses, orange rind, and white pepper. Persistent and linear, with a long finish, it will continue to mature into more umami tones of shitake and tea leaf. Drink 2025-2045.   VM 96 (11/2020): The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is one of those young wines that, from the moment you put your nose to the glass, you know you’re in for a treat. A sweetly alluring and remarkably fresh bouquet of crushed cherries, strawberries and plums is further complicated by hints of clove, spiced orange peels and mint. It’s velvety-smooth and radiant with a display of dark red fruits, all tightly wound up in a web of minerals, with an air of savory herbs and inner florals that develop toward the close. Try to keep your hands off for another four or five years, and then reap the rewards for a decade or more. Eric Guido.   WA 95 (11/2020): The Valdicava 2016 Brunello di Montalcino shows a subtle bouquet that needs extra time to open. In fact, I suggest you open your bottle about four hours before serving. This Brunello takes its time, but it inches over the senses with carefully increasing intensity. Wild cherry, toasted almond and even a touch of sweet apple or orange peel distinguish the bouquet. The tannins are firm and young, but all they need is extra time to evolve. This wine is like being introduced to a stranger who takes his time to reveal his personality, but who then turns into a true friend and confidant. Patience is required when approaching this 40,000-bottle release.

Give this another three to four years before opening.   WA 95 (4/2012): The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano looks to be a modern-day version of the 1990. Layers of seamless fruit grace the palate in this large-scaled, dramatic Brunello. The 2007 boasts remarkable intensity to match its undeniably sexy personality. Although the 2007 will require at least several years in bottle to blossom, the relatively soft tannins will make it more pleasurable than the 2006 at the outset. Both vintages will be fascinating to follow over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.

	JS 100 (11/2016): A wine with superb finesse and depth. So subtle and understated yet powerful and long. The tannin intensity is amazing. It just builds like a massive wave. Superb. Give this time in the bottle. The length is endless. Better in 2018.   WA 95+ (8/2016): Here is a big wine with lofty ambitions and an impactful presentation. The Valdicava 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano hits all the right buttons. The wine shows a profound sense of elegance and poise with subtle berry notes that blend into spice, licorice and tar. Those bright and lively aromatic components fold gracefully within the wine's tight texture, its sheer power and the silky nature of the tannins. This wine promises a long and steady aging future ahead.   VM 93 (2/2016): The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a classic Valdicava wine built on power, intensity and depth. Black cherry, smoke, licorice, dark spices and menthol make a strong first impression, followed by huge waves of tannin and acidity that will require at least a few years to settle down. In a part of Montalcino that is known for finesse, the Madonna del Piano is decidedly powerful, concentrated and extracted. Readers will want to give the 2010 a good bit of air, as the Madonna del Piano needs quite a bit of time to open up. Antonio Galloni.

	JS 98 (4/2018): A complex red with rose petals, violets, crushed stones and cherries follows through to a full body and chewy tannins that are poised and polished. Extremely long and intense. A top wine for the vintage. This needs three or four years, maybe more, to come together.   VM 95+ (4/2018): Deep ruby-red. Toasty oak and vanilla complicate red cherry and underbrush aromas and flavors. Then rich, dense and concentrated, but lovely violet lift provides clarity and cut to the suave flavors of red cherry, red currant, flint and vanilla. Much deeper and richer than the 2013 Brunello from Valdicava, this beautiful wine finishes very long and ultra-smooth. It is the best wine I have ever had from this estate. Ian d'Agata.   WA 93 (2/2018): The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a dark and thickly extracted expression. It is one of the blackest Brunellos you will find in this report. This rich red wine takes a little longer to open because those primary aromas are buried deep under all that bulk and power. Indeed, this wine is almost too much of a good thing. It moves with slow-motion laziness, and the bouquet is in absolutely no rush to show what it has in store. At its leisure, it will deliver dried blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, spice, campfire ash and sticky tar. There is some tannic astringency that will (hopefully) integrate with time. This is a hearty and satisfying wine to drink in the heart of winter with gentle snowflakes fluttering outside your window. It is a romantic wine in heart and soul.

	JS 98 (1/2019): This opens with savory, truffle and meaty aromas with a complex and quite cryptic nose that delivers a wealth of ripe plums and cherries, cedar and fresh, violet-like flowers, as well as some earthy nuances. The palate has a very sturdy, intense and power-charged core of rich plums and dark cherries, framed in quite fierce tannins that are so long. Super Brunello Riserva here with great potential. Try from 2022.   WA 96 (1/2019): Showing ripe and balanced fruit, the Valdicava 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano (with 15,666 bottles produced) offers many very positive attributes. The wine flaunts a slightly contemporary or international side, and it does so with extreme confidence and elegance. Much of that natural balance comes directly from the classic vintage that exhibits both the structure and acidity necessary for prolonged cellar aging. Now, in the wine's youngest phase, it offers lush primary cherry and blackberry flavors followed carefully by measured spice, toast and red rose potpourri.   VM 92+ (3/2019): Deep ruby. Slightly reticent nose hints at black cherry, herbs and flint. Then juicy and bright, with deep flavors of minerals, blueberry and red cherry, complicated by peppery herbs. Closes long with repeating mineral nuances. A sleeping giant, the fruit is having a tough time emerging currently but I’d say there’s plenty there, just lying beneath the wine’s noble tannic cloak. 	VM 95+ (11/2020): There’s a mentholated freshness to the 2015 Madonna del Piano Riserva which draws you in, as a seductive display of crushed black cherries, cinnamon, sage and sweet white smoke holds your attention firm. It’s silky in feel yet far more lifted than expected, with wave after wave of tart wild berries and savory spices which drench the palate in concentrated fruit, as if you can feel the skins, pips and all. Just when you think that the 2015 will release you from its structured clenches, its coating of grippy tannins comes forward, and it remains throughout the tension-filled and purple-tinged finale. This will require many years of cellaring to reveal its charms, coming across as far more structured than most other Brunello Riservas from the vintage; yet there’s plenty of fruit to keep pace throughout the wine's evolution. 	JD 99 (3/2023): Deep ruby-colored with a light purple tinge, the 2016 Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Madonna Del Piano takes on another gear with its rich perfume unfolding with lavender, black cherry, cassis, fresh leather, licorice, fresh soil, and sage. The wine is full-bodied, with a ripe velveteen texture, while maintaining freshness, and it is elegantly rounded through the mid-palate, with notes of black plum, Earl Grey, scorched earth, and tea leaf. This seems to be moving at a glacial pace in its evolution and certainly warrants at least a few more years in cellar. Drink 2026-2050.   WA 96+ (12/2022): The Valdicava 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano impresses for its intensity, its balance and its freshness. The wine is medium to full-bodied with a good amount of fruit weight and power that is offset by acidity and the lifted, vibrant quality of the bouquet. If balance is the objective, this wine meets it goals, although like with many of its peers, you certainly won't miss the deep inner power of this determined Brunello.   VM 96 (12/2021): The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is totally captivating: deep, dark and viral. It smolders up from the glass, with a thrilling mix of cherries and plums complemented by notes of black tea, balsam herbs and ashen stone. With each return to the glass, this seems to expand further, adding nuances of smoke and animal musk. The 2016 is packed full of energy but also youthful tension, showing the radiance of the vintage with its citrus-tinged fruits and depths of minerality. Through it all, energizing acidity maintains harmony, just as fine tannins slowly saturate, resulting in a long finish that resonates on licorice and purple-tinged inner florals. The 2016 is one of the most balanced, yet also prettiest, expressions that I have ever witnessed from Valdicava’s Madonna del Piano. Eric Guido

	VM 96 (2/2024): The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a showstopper, opening with a stunning bouquet of sour cherry, spiced citrus and clove complicated by traces of worn leather. This is silky and supple, showing ripe red fruit and mineral tones. It slowly gains tension toward the close but remains energized by zesty acidity all the way through. Finishing saline and long, with adolescent tannins that still grip the palate, the 2013 tapers off remarkably fresh, leaving hints of cranberry and licorice. This is on the verge of entering its drinking window, with many years of positive evolution in store for patient collectors. (Drink between 2025-2040). Eric Guido.   WA 96 (2/2018): Canalicchio di Sopra's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is tight and firm at its core, with qualities that bode very well for its aging potential. That compact core is surrounded by many thick layers of dark fruit and spice that are expressive and expansive. Those outer layers give the wine softness and some immediate accessibility, even at this early stage in its life. All summed up, this is a very complete and characteristic Brunello that offers stunning quality for medium or long-term drinking.
