Cappella Proprietary Blend |
$275 |

JD 98 (12/2017): Deeper, richer and more powerful, the 2014 Capella incorporates the highest percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the lineup and is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec. It reveals classic minerality and earthiness to go with killer notes of blackberries, toasty oak, licorice, and spice. This seductive, opulent, full-bodied beauty has a stacked mid-palate, a deep, layered texture, ripe tannin, perfect balance, and a huge finish. It still plays in the more forward, sexy style of the vintage (it's actually one of the more drinkable releases today, despite having more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend) yet will keep for two to three decades. |

2014 |
Las Posadas Howell Mtn. Proprietary Blend |
$325 |

JD 97 (12/2017): From the estate's Howell Mountain site, the 2014 Las Posadas offers a sensational bouquet of sweet crème de cassis (and lots of blue fruit characteristics, which is classic Howell Mountain), spring flowers, graphite, and crushed rocks, with just a hint of toasty oak in the background. Ethereally textured, powerful yet fresh, concentrated yet graceful, it's a killer wine that does everything right. It lacks the opulence and decadence of the other single vineyards, yet shines for its purity, focus, and precision. Along with the Capella, it's the more approachable of the single vineyard releases. VM 96 (1/2018): The 2014 Las Posadas shows the strides this Howell Mountain site continues to make. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, bittersweet chocolate, lavender, juniper berry, mint and licorice abound. The pungent aromas and piercing tannins scream of Howell Mountain. Vivid and intense, the 2014 has so much to offer. Even better, the 2014 is surprisingly accessible for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet-based wine. It should drink with minimal cellaring. Antonio Galloni. WA 95 (10/2018): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Las Posadas Proprietary Red opens with tons of wild blueberry, mulberries and cassis notes over garrigue, sage, baking spices and dusty soil plus touches of Black Forest cake and cedar. The rich, full-bodied palate is rugged, muscular, lively and concentrated with firm, grainy tannins, finishing very long and earthy. |

Bench Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$169 |

VM 93 (12/2016): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Bench Vineyard is a new wine from Russell Bevan from the famed Steltzner vineyard in the heart of Stags Leap. Crème de cassis, licorice, lavender, and spice are some of the many notes that emerge from this deep, inky Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 was partially fermented in barrel, which adds to its textural richness. It will be interesting to see what Bevan does with this fruit going forward. There certainly appears to be plenty of potential. Antonio Galloni. |

$115 |

WA 96 (10/2016): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 22 months in 70% new French oak, is a relatively limited cuvée of 300 cases. It is a stunner, with an opaque purple color, a big sweet kiss of blackberry and crème de cassis, a touch of camphor and incense followed by a lush, full-bodied wine with layers of fruit and glycerin. The wine is dense, impressive and both hedonistic and intellectually satisfying. It should drink well for at least 15-20+ years. VM 94.5 (12/2016): Black cherry, mocha, chocolate, cloves and French oak give the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon its rich, sumptuous personality. Powerful, super-concentrated and decadent in its richness the 2014 is a juicy, full-throttle wine from Pritchard Hill. The 2014 is not as showy as it was from barrel, but is quite impressive just the same. Antonio Galloni. |

The G.T.O. Beckstoffer To Kalon Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5 L) |
$595 |

JD 99 (5/2023): Lastly, and I think the star of the show in 2014, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The G.T.O. (which included some Clone 6 Cabernet Sauvignon for the first time) is a bigger, richer, more powerful wine offering pure cassis and currant fruits, some leafy herb, tobacco, chocolate, and Pauillac-like lead pencil nuances, a stacked mid-palate, ultra-fine tannins, and a thrilling finish. As with the other 2014s here, it's drinking brilliantly today and is going to have 20-30 years of overall longevity. WA 96+ (12/2016): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon The G.T.O. is a tiny lot of 25 cases, in magnum only. An intense wine with almost the essence of blackberry and cassis intermixed with charcoal, scorched earth, fruitcake and tobacco leaf. Great opulence on the attack, terrific velvety tannins and a long, layered finish make for a spectacular wine and another great example of this phenomenal Napa Valley vineyard. Drink it over the next 25-30 years. |

WA 95-98 (12/2015): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The O.G. is another killer for Carter in this vintage. It might be just below the profound concentration and depth of the 2013, but this is certainly going to be an upper-90-point wine when released. Amazing cassis, blackberry and floral notes followed by a full-bodied, velvety textured, super-rich and concentrated wine that is a stunner. This is first-growth quality that is unreal. It should drink well for 20 years, even in a more precocious vintage like 2014. |

WA 97+ (6/2018): Composed of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 5% Petite Sirah, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon G.B. Crane Vineyard is deep garnet-purple in color and scented of cassis, black cherries and warm plums with touches of pencil shavings, wood smoke, fertile soil and yeast extract with a waft of menthol. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and wonderful freshness with intense flavors, finishing long. 299 cases produced. VM 90 (4/2018): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is an attractive, mid-weight wine. Forward, fruity and open-knit, the 2014 is best enjoyed over the near and medium term. There is plenty of presence, but the 2014 is also clearly a work in progress for Crane Assembly. Antonio Galloni. |

Exzellenz Cabernet Sauvignon |
$215 |

JD 99+ (12/2017): I absolutely loved the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Exzellenze, and it pairs awesome depth and richness with crazy levels of purity. Crème de cassis, toasty oak, graphite and white flower characteristics flow to a full-bodied, perfectly balanced, silky red that doesn't put a foot wrong. It shows the approachable style of the 2014 vintage, yet has 2-3 decades of longevity ahead of it. One of the eye-opening tastings while working on this report was the lineup from Kathryn Hall’s estate located in St. Helena. There’s a wealth of wines here, yet they all have deep, concentrated, pure profiles as well as singular characters. You could pretty much randomly select from this lineup and be guaranteed to have a brilliant wine. Hats off to winemaker Steve Leveque. All the 2016s, and the majority of the 2015s, were tasted as barrel samples. |

Deep Time Ark Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$550 |
2 |
WA 98+ (12/2018): Medium to deep garnet in color, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Ark Vineyard Deep Time rolls languorously out of the glass with subtle, slowly emerging scents of redcurrant jelly, wild blueberries, mulberries and cassis plus faint wafts of forest floor, oolong tea, potpourri, menthol and Indian spices. The full-bodied palate is firm, taut and solidly structured with ripe, grainy tannins, revealing loads of very tightly wound layers with coaxing, finishing very long and purely fruited. This wine was a little closed compared to other wines/vintages and therefore could well warrant a higher score when it comes out on the other side of this mute phase, in say 5-7 years. |

Deep Time Few and Far Between Cabernet Sauvignon |
$575 |

WA 98 (12/2018): The nose of the medium garnet colored 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Few and Far Between Vineyard Deep Time is so incredibly perfumed, offering up scents of lilacs, rose hip tea, forest floor, fallen leaves and chocolate-covered cherries over a core of blueberry compote, blackcurrant cordial and raspberry preserves. While full-bodied and wonderfully intense, the palate packs in the poise, with beautifully ripe, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing epically long with incredible depth. |

2014 |
Deep Time Kayli Morgan Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$575 |
2 |
WA 99 (12/2018): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard Deep Time spent 48 months in barrel, which is amazing when you consider how vibrant it is. Medium garnet colored, it hits the ground running with bright, expressive scents of raspberry coulis, blackcurrant cordial, baked plums and Morello cherries giving way to a beguiling perfume of potpourri, new leather, cloves and unsmoked cigars plus wafts of sassafras and pencil lead. The generously fruited, full-bodied palate ups the game with exotic spice fireworks among the rich, opulent fruit, supported by firm, tight-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing very long. |

The Ark Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$495 |

WA 98+ (12/2018): Deep garnet colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Ark Vineyard comes charging out of the gate with amazingly intense roses and lilacs scents over an impressively primary core of blackberries, crushed black currants and black cherries with tantalizing layers of chocolate box, smoked meats and Chinese five spice plus a waft of fragrant earth. The palate is full-bodied, super concentrated and built like a brick house, delivering very firm, grainy tannins with just enough freshness, finishing very long and minerally. |
2014 |
Wraith Cabernet Sauvignon |
$725 |
3 |
WA 100 (12/2018): Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Wraith opens with compelling crème de cassis, wild blueberries, anise, chocolate mint and black earth scents plus suggestions of candied violets, cinnamon stick, tar, cigar box and smoked meats. Full-bodied, rich, super firm and built like a brick house, the palate offers layer upon layer of very tightly wound, subtly nuanced flavors leading to a very long, very perfumed and minerally finish. If any Hundred Acre wine can live for 100 years, this is certainly a contender. JD 98 (2/2023): Surprisingly, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Wraith has a touch more density than the 2013 and offers sensational notes of darker currants, cedarwood, tobacco, woodsmoke, and spring flowers. As with all the wines from this incredible estate, the balance is spot on, it has gorgeous tannins, and incredible length on the finish. |

Lail Vineyards |
2014 |
J Daniel Cuvee Proprietary Blend |
$165 |

WA 95 (10/2016): The flagship wines include the 2014 J. Daniel Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon, which comes from three sources – the family vineyard called Molehill at a 1700-feet elevation on Howell Mountain, the Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard and Heimark Vineyard in Calistoga. A gorgeous 2014, with notes of graphite, mulberry and blackcurrant, this full-bodied, opaque purple wine offers terrific fruit purity, sweet tannin, and a long finish of a good 45+ seconds. It was aged 19 months in 75% new French oak and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. There are 1,064 cases, and it can be drunk now or cellared for another 25 years. VM 94+ (5/2019): Bright medium ruby. Youthfully medicinal aromas and flavors of black fruits, licorice and bitter chocolate. Densely packed and fine-grained, conveying terrific purity of fruit framed by harmonious acidity. Quite full but less thick and extractive than the '13, and a bit less port-like than that big boy. Still, this brooding, backward, slightly unsettled wine is difficult to taste today. With its element of reserve and powerful finish, it calls for extended aging. It may well eventually merit an even higher rating. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 92 (12/2016): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Actaeon is one of the most complete wines in this tasting. Sweet layered aromatics, pliant fruit and silky tannins are the main signatures. All the elements are nicely balanced throughout. Actaeon is sourced from the Quixote vineyard in Stags Leap. This is very nicely done. Antonio Galloni. |

$265 |

VM 93 (12/2016): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Kaliholmanok, from a vineyard on Spring Mountain, is the most complete and deeply satisfying of these Cabernets from Aaron Pott. Pliant, creamy and super-expressive, the 2014 offers terrific depth and intensity through to the finish. A host of dark stone fruit, licorice, leather and mint notes are finely-knit in this expressive Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. The Kaliholmanok makes its case more with finesse than power. Antonio Galloni. |

Promontory (Harlan) |
2014 |
Proprietary Blend |
$699 |

VM 100 (12/2018): I knew it was only a matter of time before Davide Cilli would make a wine at Promontory that would represent the maximum expression of this rugged hillside site. The 2014 Promontory has been exceptional in the past, but it has also gained another gear or two over the last year, which is pretty much now standard for these wines. Stunningly delineated and precise, with tremendous purity and exceptional balance, the 2014 Promontory dazzles from start to finish. This is an especially translucent style, one that is more about persistence and balance than power alone. Stated simply, the 2014 Promontory is towering achievement from one of Napa Valley's most talented young winemakers. Kudos to the Harlan family and the winegrowing team led by Bob Levy and Cory Empting for creating the framework that allowed Cilli to craft this exquisite, riveting Cabernet Sauvignon. Antonio Galloni. WA 99 (9/2019): Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2014 Promontory bursts from the glass with bold, brazen notions of crushed blackcurrants, black raspberries, wild blueberries and redcurrant jelly with a compelling perfume of rose hip tea, sandalwood, unsmoked cigars and dried lavender. Full-bodied, super intense and yet wonderfully ethereal, it has a firm line of very fine-grained tannins, tons of freshness and incredibly vibrant, crunchy fruit, finishing long with bags of energy. JS 99 (11/2019): This is a red with such incredible depth and beauty with a tannin structure that just melts into the glass. It’s full body, yet extremely tense and perfectly succent. Hints of bitter lemon, cedar and dark berry. Pine needle and spice with fresh mushroom. It’s reserved and wonderful. Tension and focus. First vintage aged in all cask. Impressive now but one for the cellar. New classic for Napa. Better after 2022. JD 98 (1/2019): Starting with the 2014 Promontory, this is a riveting wine in the vintage and will unquestionably be one of the longest-lived as well. Sporting a saturated purple color as well as a rock star nose of ripe blue fruits, crushed rocks, graphite, and leaf pencil, this monster of a wine hits the palate with full-bodied richness and depth, building tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a finish that won’t quit. Where most 2014s are already accessible and charming, this needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will be a 40- to 50-year wine. WS 94 (9/2020): Lush and forward in feel, with alluring steeped plum and blackberry reduction flavors, lined with singed alder, tobacco and sage hints. Picks up a lovely warm gravel note, while the fruit keeps the upper hand on the extremely long, smoldering finish, showing greater depth and structure as it moves through. Best from 2021 through 2034. 1,785 cases made. |

VM 98 (3/2018): The 2014 Sloan is a terrific example of the vintage at its best. Mocha, espresso, grilled herbs, leather, smoke and licorice are al fused together in this super-expressive, nuanced wine. In 2014, the Sloan is not as exuberant or rich as it can be, but that is really not an issue at all. The 2014 is a gorgeous wine in the making, that's all there is to it. Antonio Galloni. |

Asterisk Proprietary Blend |
$210 |

JD 96 (1/2020): I also loved the 2014 Asterisk, which shows the complex, balanced, elegant style of this vintage perfectly. Giving up full-bodied notes of tobacco leaf, forest floor, fruitcake, and loads of cassis fruits, it’s deep, flawlessly balanced, and has ripe, polished tannins that emerge on the finish. The balance and purity here are remarkable. and while it offers incredible pleasure today, it’s going to evolve for 20-25 years. WA 95 (12/2018): Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Asterisk is a little closed to begin, slowly revealing blackberry pie, baked blackcurrants and mulberries on the nose with nuances of redcurrant jelly, tobacco and lavender with hints of underbrush and pencil lead. Full-bodied and with a rock-solid backbone of very firm, wonderfully ripe, grainy tannins, the palate has oodles of freshness and impressive depth, finishing long and minerally. VM 93 (1/2018): A gorgeous second wine, the 2014 Asterisk has a lot to offer. Succulent red cherry, plum and pomegranate fruit give the wine much of its racy personality. In 2014, the Asterisk has terrific energy and brightness, with pretty floral and savory notes that add perfume. There is so much grace and class here, but readers should expect the slightly slender style that is typical of the year. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 95 (3/2017): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III opens with notes of crème de cassis, baked blackberries, spice box and pencil shavings with hints of dried herbs, cloves and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with black and blue fruit layers, framed by firm, impeccably ripe tannins and finishing with persistent spice notes. |

Heritage Ridge Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon |
$195 |
3 |
WA 94+ (12/2016): Another wine produced at the Diamond Mountain vineyard is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Heritage Ridge, which is a small cuvée of just under 100 cases aged in 100% Taransaud wood. This comes from the red iron-rich Aiken soils and this wine offer up notes of melted road tar, crème de cassis, pen ink , graphite and oodles of blackcurrant fruit. It is dense, rich, age-worthy and structured for a 2014, but this is mountain fruit and serious winemaking. This one will benefit from several years of bottle age and drink well for at least 25 or more years. VM 93.5 (12/2016): An addition to the range, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Heritage Ridge emerges from terraces slopes on red Aiken soils. Dark, ample and voluptuous, with huge tannins, the 2014 possesses notable breadth and drive. Inky blue and purplish fruit, chocolate, mocha, licorice and spice gradually flesh out in the glass. The 2014 is a powerful wine that needs time to unwind. Antonio Galloni. |
