JS 92 (2/2015): Pure and precise aromas of dark fruits and currants with hints of stones follow through to a full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Harmonious and very elegant. Better in 2017.
WA 90 (4/2015): The beautiful second wine, the 2012 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion, has a dense ruby/purple color, sweet raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, subtle earth and spice, supple tannins and an opulent fleshy mouthfeel. It is a terrific second wine and Outstanding in its own right. Drink it over the next 12-15 years. |

JS 93 (2/2017): Currant and flower aromas galore. Very aromatic. Full-bodied yet tight and dense on the palate. A solid core of fruit and savory acidity. Very long and pretty. Drink in 2021.
VM 91+ (2/2017): Today, the 2014 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion is powerful, structured and also a touch compact, with a bit less apparent breadth than it showed from barrel. Smoke, tobacco, licorice, cedar, French oak and dark stone fruit notes struggle to fully emerge. Today the tannins are especially forbidding. There is good energy and tension in the glass. Perhaps it is the high %age of Cabernet Franc that is shutting the wine down. The 2014 is very pretty, but it is not an especially forthcoming second wine. Even so, the bright floral and red-fruit-toned notes make me think it will drink nicely for a number of years. The blend is 45 % Merlot, 31 % Cabernet Franc and 24 % Cabernet Sauvignon. JD 90 (11/2017): The 2014 La Chapelle De La Mission Haut Brion is an Outstanding second wine that’s made in an open, sexy, ready to go style. A blend of 45% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, it boasts a great bouquet of currants, kirsch, toasted bread, and Asian spices. Medium to full-bodied, front-end loaded, ripe and sexy, it’s already impossible to resist yet I suspect will still be showing great in 10-12 years.
WA 88 (3/2017): The 2014 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion has a lightness of touch on the nose, very subtle and understated with pretty blackberry, bilberry and cassis scents gently unfolding in the glass, yet never getting too carried away. The palate is medium-bodied with tobacco-tinged black fruit on the entry. This has certainly gained more weight since I tasted it from barrel, exerting more presence in the mouth, although the finish just lacks a little complexity and seems rudimentary when compared to the Grand Vin. Drink now and over the next 6-8 years. |

JS 94 (2/2018): Lots of currants, spices and fresh herbs follow through to a full body that's tight and silky. Hints of cream and vanilla. Savory and salty. Shows structure and intensity as the second wine of La Mission. Try in 2021.
JD 92 (11/2017): As to the reds, the 2015 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion is a terrific second wine well worth seeking out. Tobacco leaf, asphalt, earth and loads of ripe black fruits all emerge from this sexy, opulent, medium to full-bodied, beauty that shares plenty of similarities to its bigger brother. With ripe tannin and a great finish, drink it anytime over the coming two decades.
WA 92 (2/2018): Composed of 30% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, the medium garnet-purple colored 2015 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion opens with an earthy nose of mossy bark, fragrant soil and fallen leaves over a core of red and black currants, bay leaves and menthol plus a waft of violets. Medium to full-bodied, it has compelling restraint and elegance with soft tannins and great freshness, finishing on a mineral note. Possessing the spirit and many of the signature hallmarks of its big brother, this second wine of La Mission Haut-Brion is certainly nothing to sneeze at! |

JD 93 (2/2019): Looking first at the second wine of the estate, the 2016 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion is 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36.5% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc. It’s a head turner of a second wine and has plenty of grand vin character, yet it’s more front end-loaded, with beautiful tobacco leaf, cigar smoke, graphite, and earthy red and black fruits all emerging from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, deep, balanced, with a sexy yet also elegant texture, it’s a winner to enjoy over the coming 2+ decades.
VM 92 (1/2019): The 2016 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion is just as captivating from bottle as it was from barrel. Fresh, silky and inviting, the Chapelle is all class. Floral notes lead into a core of expressive red cherry and plum fruit. Medium in body, silky and exquisite in its balance, the 2016 has so much to recommend it. I would prefer to give the wine a few years in bottle to allow a broader range of aromas and flavors to develop, but even today, the Chapelle is gorgeous. The 21% Cabernet Franc in the blend adds striking brightness and perfume throughout. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 91-94 (4/2024): The 2023 La Chapelle De La Mission Haut-Brion showed beautifully, with a ripe, round, supple, sexy style. Black raspberries, liquid violets, spicy wood, and tobacco are just some of the nuances in this beauty, and it has a classic La Mission supple, round, opulent style that has so much to love.
VM 90-92 (4/2024): The 2023 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion is a potent yet accessible second wine. Soft contours add to its considerable appeal. Crushed flowers, spice and sweet pipe tobacco lift a core of red-toned fruit in this racy, sensual Chapelle. Attractive floral and cinnamon notes linger. The 2023 is all charm—I expect it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Antonio Galloni.
WA 90-92 (4/2024): The 2023 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion offers up aromas of blueberries, cassis and dark wild berries. Medium-bodied, long and fleshy, it’s nicely integrated, with a dense core of fruit, youthfully firm tannins and a persistent finish. Deeper and more structured than usual, it will regards some patience. This is a blend of 48.3% Merlot, 39.4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12.3% Cabernet Franc.
JA 93 (4/2024): Deep ruby colour, makes an immediate impression with its elegant, uplifted tannic grip delivering careful construction of red roses, blueberry and black cherry fruit, grilled spices and understated energy. Will need a good few years in bottle before fully softening, but full of joy. |
