JD 93-95+ (12/2017): Possessing considerable elegance and purity in its blackberry, black cherry (and even some blueberry) fruit, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Bergfeld opens nicely in the glass and gives up more graphite, spicy oak, and licorice aromatics. It's concentrated, medium to full-bodied, beautifully focused and pure on the palate, with enough structure to warrant 5-6 years of bottle age. One of the eye-opening tastings while working on this report was the lineup from Kathryn Hall’s estate located in St. Helena. There’s a wealth of wines here, yet they all have deep, concentrated, pure profiles as well as singular characters. You could pretty much randomly select from this lineup and be guaranteed to have a brilliant wine. Hats off to winemaker Steve Leveque. All the 2016s, and the majority of the 2015s, were tasted as barrel samples. WA 93-95 (12/2016): The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Bergfeld is a stunner. Beautiful graphite, spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry fruit, full-bodied opulence, stunning purity and a terrific presence on the palate with no heaviness make for a profound and gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 20 years, although it will be absolutely sensational after bottling. |

VM 89-92 (1/2020): The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon 1873 is gorgeous. A blend taken mostly from sites in the eastern hillsides of Napa Valley (Atlas Peak, Howell Mountain, Rutherford) the 1873 shows just how appealing the vintage is, even among the more mid-tier bottlings. The 1873 offers an enticing combination of fruit intensity and freshness, all in a mid-weight style that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 99+ (12/2017): I absolutely loved the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Exzellenze, and it pairs awesome depth and richness with crazy levels of purity. Crème de cassis, toasty oak, graphite and white flower characteristics flow to a full-bodied, perfectly balanced, silky red that doesn't put a foot wrong. It shows the approachable style of the 2014 vintage, yet has 2-3 decades of longevity ahead of it. WS 87 (7/2015): Tannins hold the upper hand in this dusty, savory, cedar-laced effort, overshadowing the core of juicy dark berry, licorice, cassis and kirsch. Should be more complete in a year. Best from 2016 through 2027. 2,700 cases made. |

WA 96 (12/2016): The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall from Napa is another blockbuster, exhibiting an opaque bluish purple color, notes of charcoal, graphite, blackberry, chocolate and exotic spices, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long, long finish. Like most 2013s, it is just hinting at its ultimate potential, but this wine is loaded and exciting. Forget it for another 4-5 years and drink it over the following three decades. WS 93 (11/2016): Offering aromas of opulent blackberry, plum and currant, this is floral, tightly focused and delivers ample fruit intensity and purity on the palate. Ripe, fine-grained tannins and juicy dark berry details grace the finish. Drink now through 2030. 5,844 cases made. VM 92 (12/2016): The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is dark, powerful and juicy. Raspberry jam, mocha, new leather and dark spices, along with supple, forward fruit give the Kathryn Hall its soft, succulent personality. This is one of the more approachable, racy 2013 Cabernets readers will come across. Silky tannins add to the wine's finesse and texture. Antonio Galloni. JS 88 (12/2016): Very ripe and raisiny with dense and rich fruit. A little hot. Dialling it back a few notches would make this Outstanding but alas, there's just too much here, and what there is overdone. |

WA 97 (9/2019): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall sashays out of the glass with beguiling notions of warm black and red currants, fresh blackberries, black raspberries and boysenberries with touches of rose hip tea, forest floor, pencil shavings and violets. Full-bodied with a taut foundation of firm, fine-grained tannins and bags of freshness, it has layer upon layer of perfumed black and red fruits, finishing long and fragrant. (Drinkl between 2020-2044). JD 95 (1/2020): Loads of blue fruits, kirsch liqueur, crushed violets, spring flowers, and orange blossom notes emerge from the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall. This exotic, sexy 2016 has a light, elegant texture, nicely integrated acidity, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. It's another wine that blends power and elegance beautifully. Drink bottles over the coming 20-25 years. (Drink between 2020-2045). VM 95 (1/2020): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is a rich, dense wine. Dark red and purplish berry fruit, spice, lavender and new leather all flesh out in an ample, creamy Cabernet Sauvignon endowed with tremendous textural resonance. This is one of the more expressive wines in the range. (Drink between 2023-2031). Antonio Galloni. |
