WA 96+ (10/2008): Rinaldi’s 2004 Barolo Brunate/Le Coste has been special every time I have tasted it over the last few years. Profoundly expressive balsamic aromas jump out of the glass, leading to layers of seductive perfumed dark fruit that continue to unfold as the wine sits in the glass. This is a truly majestic Barolo. It possesses superb weight and density in a finely-textured yet powerful style. The tannins are firm yet incredibly refined. Readers will not want to miss this exceptional wine. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2029. VM 92-94 (12/2007): Good deep red. Knockout nose offers roasted plum, mocha, brown spices, chocolate and underbrush. Offers superb concentration for the vintage, with excellent vinosity to its flavors of sappy, candied black raspberry and spices. Very rich and broad wine, with big tannins arriving late to dust the palate. This will take a decade or two of bottle aging to evolve fully. WS 92 (12/2008): Shows loads of fresh tobacco on the nose, with strawberry jam. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, fruity finish. There's pure fruit now. Stylish, traditional winemaking. Best after 2012. 830 cases made. |

WA 97 (12/2010): The 2006 Barolo Brunate-Le Coste flows from the glass with tons of dark fruit wrapped around a deep, muscular core. I am too young to have tasted the 1989 when it was first released, but I imagine it might very well have been like this. The sheer density of the fruit is remarkable, while the wine’s balance is first-rate. With time, sweet balsamic mentholated notes appear, along with spices, violets, leather and licorice, all supported by the wine’s muscular, broad-shouldered frame. This is a classic among classics and a must-have wine for anyone serious about great Barolo. The more it sat in the glass, the more I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2026-2046. WS 93 (12/2010): An elegant, supple style, despite its firm structure. Exhibits rose, cherry, menthol and licorice flavors underscored by mineral. Taut and linear, with a long, sustained aftertaste. Best from 2013 through 2028. 650 cases made. VM 92-94 (12/2009): Brunate component: Medium red. Mocha, brown spices, tobacco and cocoa powder on the nose, with suggestions of superripeness. Sweet, lush and deep, with decadent flavors of plum, tobacco, brown spices and earth. Finishes long and sweet, with substantial broad, ripe tannins. From a barrel of pure Le Coste: Bright, deep red. Rather Burgundian aromas of mocha, smoke and earth, with good mineral lift. Sexy and sweet in the mouth, with lovely energy to the flavors of dark raspberry, spices, minerals and red licorice. This sample has a floral component I don't find yet in the other barrels of 2006 here. Finishes broad and long, with suave tannins. This will comprise about 25% of the ultimate blend, says Rinaldi. |

WA 93 (6/2018): The Giuseppe Rinaldi 2014 Barolo Brunate is a darkly saturated expression with important textural richness and lasting dark fruit flavors. Marta Rinaldi tells me that she lost up to 40% of her Brunate fruit in 2014 because of a violent hail storm. That natural yield reduction has done much to increase the power and concentration of this lovely Barolo. Blackberry, sour cherry and wild plum segue to grilled herb and citrusy orange peel. VM 92 (2/2018): A Barolo of midweight structure and persistence, the 2014 Brunate comes across as a wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. The 2014 offers fine balance in a decidedly gracious, understated style. Naturally, the dimension and breadth of the very best years aren't quite there. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 96 (6/2019): The 2015 Barolo Brunate benefits from a thicker soil profile in this vineyard that consequently bumps the wine's aromatic intensity and staying power up a notch or two. This wine is almost crunchy in texture, with a subtle snap or crackle as it hits the palate. It shows enormous beauty and richness with a dark fruit profile followed by elements of spice, tar, tobacco and moist potting soil. There are floral notes as well with rose and lavender. This wine will reward those with the patience to wait. Drink 2021-2045 VM 93 (2/2019): Rinaldi's Barolo Brunate is refined and light on its feet in 2015, with a bit less structure and overall depth than is the norm. That is not at all surprising, as the 2015 Brunate has always been a relatively light wine by Rinaldi standards. Dark red cherry, plum, licorice, sage and balsamic notes shape this expressive yet understated Barolo from Rinaldi. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95 (2/2021): The 2017 Barolo Brunate is a dark, powerful wine. A huge swath of tannins gives the Brunate its feeling of gravitas. Readers will have to be patient with the 2017, as it is going to need a number of years to come together. Dark cherry fruit, lavender, sage, licorice, spice and earthy notes build into a crescendo of aromas and flavors that is just captivating. The 2017 finishes with tremendous substance and intensity, both of which bode so well for the future. Antonio Galloni. WA 95 (3/2021): Keeping in line with the personality of the vintage, the 2017 Barolo Brunate is open and deeply expressive on first nose, with inviting waves of dark fruit, pressed violet, rust and licorice that add considerably to the lifted intensity of the bouquet. This Brunate puts its power and its deep, inner elegance right out there for you to enjoy. However, it also promises better things to those willing to wait for the wine to complete its bottle evolution over the coming decades. The palate is delicately lean, but long and polished, with important tannic fiber at the back. The 2017 growing season offered no moisture during the hottest weeks of summer, yet these tenacious grapevines and their extended root systems found a way to survive and thrive. |

VM 97 (9/2014): The 2010 Barolo Tre Tine is classic and austere to the core. Here, the blend of sites yields a massively tannic, old-school Barolo that is for the exceedingly patient. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco, cedar and licorice are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. The 2010 is incredibly focused, with tons of Le Coste in its flavor profile, but above all else, in its structure. Intense, searing tannins support the finish. Most people will desperately want the Brunate, and with good reason. It is a magical wine. But readers should not forget the Tre Tine. It is much less showy today, but in many ways it is a more typical Rinaldi Barolo for its sense of classic austerity. WS 93 (12/2014): Juicy cherry, raspberry and currant flavors are accented by flowers, tea and tobacco in this elegant, intense red. Long and harmonious, with a lingering aftertaste of fruit, spice and mineral. Best from 2017 through 2032. 550 cases made. |

WS 94 (12/2015): This silky and alluring red boasts flavors of rose, raspberry and strawberry, backed by firm, refined tannins. This is an elegant wine that remains long and focused on the aftertaste, where the fruit echoes and a mineral element emerges. Best from 2018 through 2032. 750 cases made. VM 93 (3/2015): Rinaldi's 2011 Barolo Tre Tine is super-expressive and gorgeous today. Dark red cherry, plum, cloves, new leather, rose petal and mint notes are all wonderfully alive and delineated. The Tre Tine is a blend of fruit from Ravera, Cannubi-San Lorenzo and Le Coste, all in the town of Barolo. In the warm 2011 vintage, the significant presence of fruit from Ravera, a high-altitude site, gives the Tre Tine its sense of freshness and linear energy. The Brunate is a bit richer and creamier, but today, I have a slight preference for the Tre Tine, as it is fresher, more vibrant and better balanced, at least today. Best of all, the 2011 will drink well with minimal cellaring. WA 92 (6/2015): The pretty 2011 Barolo Tre Tine shows elegance, fullness and cheerful generosity of fruit. The wine represents a blend of Nebbiolo harvested from the Cannubi S. Lorenzo, Ravera and Le Coste vineyards. Cherry and blackberry aromas rise to the front with lingering tones of smoke, crushed granite and licorice at the back. Barolo Tre Tine shows silky but firm tannins and balanced acidity. This classic style will last long in your cellar. |
