VM 90 (3/1998): Very good red-ruby. Aromas of smoke, game and earth; less purely fruity than the a few of his other '95s. Sweet, layered and vinous; showing a lot of early personality. Conveys a slightly roasted quality in the mouth, plus notes of gunflint and pepper. Finishes with dusty, even tannins and very good length. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 92 (5/2010): Medium to deep ruby colour. Some floral, red rose aromas to begin with a core of warm cranberry, pomegranate, pepper and a menthol whiff. Crisp acidity, medium+ level of finely grained tannins and plenty of elegant fruit. Long finish. WS 91 (2/2002): Beautiful. Dark in color, refined in the mineral aromas. A full-bodied Pinot that is reserved and classy, with complex red berries, menthol, wet earth complexity. Tannins are well-integrated. Best from 2003 through 2010. 830 cases made. VM 90+ (4/2002): Red-ruby. Precise aromas of black fruits, bitter cherry and dark chocolate. Rich, sweet and concentrated but quite backward; perfumed in the mouth for a young Grivot wine but not yet showing its texture. Finishes with strong, palate-coating tannins and excellent length. BH 90 (1/2002): Interesting contrast of elegance and austerity with remarkably fine, intense, earthy fruit and structured flavors that offer excellent sève and solid structure. This will need time as it's presently closed and tight yet everything is here to permit it to age for at least a decade or more. Drink 2008-2015 |

BH 94 (1/2008): (50+ year old vines.) Here the nose is much more deeply pitched with attractively spiced aromas that include iron-infused warm earth notes as well as animale and underbrush hints that lead to delicious, powerful and youthfully austere big-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract and a linear, concentrated and driving finish. There is real energy here and while the tannins are a bit brut at the moment, this is actually fairly refined as young Clos de Vougeot typically presents itself. Worth a close look as there is real depth here. Drink 2020+. WS 93 (5/2008): A dark, rich red, densely packed with black cherry, blackberry, mineral, spice and smoke aromas and flavors. It's fresh and loaded up with tannins, so will take some time to resolve itself. Long finish. 100 cases imported. VM 92 (3/2008): Bright red-ruby. Strong redcurrant and cherry liqueur aromas, complemented by sweet oak. Very rich and thick, with a candied, liqueur-like quality that reminded me of a chocolate truffle. Very Clos Vougeot in its medicinal, menthol character, but can't quite match the lift or class of Grivot's '05s from higher-altitude sites. This is a more earth-bound wine but there's also plenty of juice on the very long, ripely tannic finish. WA 90-91 (4/2007): A 2005 Clos Vougeot offers a nose of blackberry, wreathed in wood smoke. Firmer in tannin and with less surface polish than most of Grivot’s wines, it exhibits chalky, black-fruited depth, and overt density, palate-coating richness, but also notable freshness and grip all the way through to its long if ultimately rather austere mineral finish. Figure waiting for 5-7 years just to check back on this. |

BH 95 (1/2012): (50+ year old vines). A discreet touch of wood spice adds aromatic breadth to the earthy and reserved red berry fruit nose that also offers up a suggestion of the sauvage that carries over to the rich, powerful and admirably concentrated big-bodied flavors that culminate in an impressively long, energetic and youthfully austere finish. This is a big and muscular but not rustic example that will require plenty of cellar time. Drink 2024+. WA 94+ (4/2012): The Clos de Vougeot is gorgeous in 2009. This is an especially dark, brooding Clos Vougeot. Dark red cherries, plums, tar and licorice are some of the many notes that take shape in this explosive, beguiling Burgundy. The sheer energy and drive make the Clos Vougeot a standout. Graphite, mint and licorice linger on the pointed, focused finish. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. VM 95 (4/2012): Bright medium red. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Seamless, sappy and explosive on the palate, conveying an impression of silkiness without weight. Really explosive mouthfilling perfume here, even if there's plenty in reserve for a long and positive evolution in bottle. The wonderfully fresh, mounting finish features substantial dusty tannins and resounding black cherry and dark chocolate flavors. "The 2009s are to drink anytime," noted Grivot. "Even this Clos Vougeot would be great with grilled beef now." A great vintage for this bottling, which is partly from vines located in the so-so northeast corner of this vineyard. WS 93 (6/2012): Muscular and rigid, exhibiting a well of black cherry, currant and spice flavors, this red gains in both freshness and elegance from attack to finish. Shuts down in the end, with strong tannins and a tactile sensation. Be patient. Best from 2017 through 2035. 135 cases imported. |

BH 94 (1/2016): A restrained nose proposes a well-layered mix of plum, essence of cherry and pungent earth scents along with a hint of the sauvage. The textured, concentrated and powerful large-scaled flavors possess remarkable density on the mid-palate thanks to the abundant dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine and slightly softens the austere and serious but not hard finale. As good as the 1ers in the range are, there is simply another dimension of depth present here. In sum this is terrific but patience will definitely be required. Drink 2028+. |

WS 94 (1/2019): Blueberry, boysenberry and violet flavors are backed by a firm structure in this expressive red. Balanced and poised for a nice evolution over the next two decades, with a long, tangy finish. Best from 2022 through 2040. 126 cases made. NM 92-94 (12/2017): The 2016 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Roncières has a delightful bouquet: red cherries, strawberry, a touch of black truffle and smoke, all understated at first but unfolding with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is extremely pure and tensile, strangely not unlike a Morey-Saint-Denis in terms of structure, and you can feel the chalkiness coming through on the marine-tinged, saline finish. Excellent—and I suspect this will be very long lasting. There are just five barrels instead of the usual 11 due to frost. BH 91-93 (1/2018): A slightly fresher if earthier and less obvious spicy nose displays notes of essence of red currant and a discreet floral touch. There is a sleek muscularity to the much more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that deliver excellent punch and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and complex finale. This is quite firm and a bit youthfully austere as well but I suspect that the impeccable balance will allow it to be enjoyable young. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! VM 90-92 (1/2018): Slightly reduced and a bit lower-pitched than the Rouges, offering aromas of black raspberry complicated by soil tones. Plusher, sweeter and more pliant on entry than the Rouges, then juicy and alive in the middle palate but a bit inexpressive in the early going. Tightens up on the back end, finishing with a firm edge. A bit disorganized today and in need of further elevage. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 92 (1/2007): This is much like the Beaux-Monts with its cool, reserved and elegant nose of violets, spice and pure plumy dark fruit aromas that complement perfectly the suave, sweet and mouth filling flavors underpinned by buried tannins and huge length. This is a vibrant and very sophisticated wine and like the Echézeaux, the tannins are even more refined than usual with an utterly seductive inner-mouth perfume that is at once seductive and classy. A stunner of a wine that is both serious and classy. Recommended. (Drink starting 2014). WA 86 (11/2015): The 2004 Richebourg Grand Cru from Grivot was a very controversial wine when opened at the Richebourg tasting in London. It has an extraordinary deep, almost opaque color. The nose is not afflicted by the "green meanies" like so many other 2004s, yet it was almost Bordeaux, Graves-like in personality, as if it did not want to express Burgundy or Pinot Noir characteristics. The palate is dense, rather chewy with black sulky fruit, but marred by bitterness and some astringency on the finish. I much prefer recent vintages from Etienne Grivot that show more class and purity. |

BH 92 (1/2010): (from Richebourg proper.) This also is notably restrained and is even more reserved than that of the Clos de Vougeot but classier with a wonderfully intense and layered nose that offers up a variety of spice and herbal notes, including anise, clove, cinnamon and soy that can also be found on the pure and sleekly muscled flavors that possess real drive, indeed this does a slow but sure build from the mid-palate on through the explosive and tangy finish. This is a wine of harmony, balance, power and Outstanding length though it is sufficiently tight to undoubtedly require 12 to 15 years of time in bottle first. Very promising but note that here too the gas is enough to require decanting. Drink 2019+. |

BH 95 (1/2011): (from Richebourg proper). The '08 Richebourg is blessed with the most complex and most complete nose that features a wonderfully fresh and spicy aromatic profile that includes red and blue pinot fruit, plum, kirsch and an herbal hint that introduces intense, pure and mineral-driven large-bodied flavors that possess a beautiful sense of relief and tension on the hugely long finish. This very stylish effort should be great in time but it will require plenty of it. Drink 2025+. VM 94+ (4/2011): Dark bright red. Wonderfully pungent, soil-driven aromas of minerals, cocoa powder, pepper and smoke. Sappy and densely packed, with terrific mineral lift to the dark berry and saline flavors. Plenty of fruit intensity and juicy energy here, but this backward wine needs a good decade of aging to reveal itself. The long, slowly building finish displays superb grip. WA 93 (5/2011): The 2008 Richebourg is big, powerful and, not surprisingly, rather shut down. Today the tannins are quite imposing, but there is enough richness in the fruit to get a sense of where this wine is headed over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. WS 92 (6/2011): This is very backward and tight, with a core of rose, black currant and cherry straining to be heard. The fruit is surrounded by firm tannins keeping a grip on everything, virtually shutting down the finish. Gets better with air, yet requires patience. Best from 2015 through 2032. 20 cases imported. |

VM 95+ (4/2016): Bright dark red. Precise, high-pitched aromas of red cherry, raspberry, licorice and mint. Utterly spherical, fine-grained wine with outstanding intensity; conveys a powerful impression of force but without any hardness or brutality. The pungent red berry flavors are complicated by suggestions of leather and game and given further punch by strong underlying minerality. Finishes with big, broad, building tannins that will require patience. Boasts outstanding inner-mouth tension and energy, but the sensuality of Vosne-Romanée is also on display here. A great showing. Stephen Tanzer. BH 95 (1/2016): This undoubtedly possesses the most floral nose of these 2013 grands crus with its notes of lilac, violet and rose petal along with a broad range of spice elements adding nuance to the dark berry fruit liqueur aromas. There is superb volume and intensity to the pungent mineral-driven and imposingly-scaled flavors that exude focused power on the extract-rich, explosively long and beautifully well-detailed finale. As good as the Echézeaux is, and it is indeed superb, the Riche is flat out great. As I have consistently underscored with the Grivot '13s though do not buy this wine in the hopes of instant, or even early, gratification as the Riche is going to require a very long snooze in a cool cellar. |

BH 88-91 (1/2018): (from 7 different vineyards the most important of which is Aux Ormes.) A more elegant and really quite pretty nose offers up a ripe and fresh blend of plum, dark cherry and spice, all of which is trimmed in subtle wood. The generous, fleshy and very round medium-bodied flavors possess a highly seductive mid-palate mouthfeel while exhibiting good length on the delicious finale that also flashes a touch of youthful austere. Drink 2023+. VM 88-91 (1/2018): (made from 12 parcels encompassing 7 different terroirs, according to Grivot): Bright, dark red. Aromas of black cherry and cocoa powder. Juicy and energetic, showing lovely inner-mouth lift and refinement to its flavors of black fruits, licorice, violet and cocoa powder. Quite tightly wound on the sappy back end, spreading out subtly and leaving behind vibrant note of spices and black pepper. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 88+ (3/2011): Palish medium red. Reticent, polite aromas of cherry, raspberry and minerals. Juicy, tight and youthfully imploded, with floral and spice elements emerging on the palate. In a very dry style but more refined than the Charmois. The pure finish features attractive floral/mineral lift. WA 88 (5/2011): The 2008 Vosne-Romanee reveals good inner tension in its sweet crushed flowers, tobacco and incense. This, too, could use a little more complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016. BH 88 (1/2011): 940% of the blend is from Aux Ravioles on the Nuits border.) A classic Vosne nose of spicy violet suffused red and blue pinot fruit where the spiciness carries over to the supple middle weight sour cherry-infused flavors that possess a firm tannic spine and a hint of rusticity on the otherwise balanced and long finish. A good villages. Drink 2015+. WS 79 (12/2011): This is stingy, with light berry and spice notes followed by an astringent finish. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 260 cases imported. |

VM 95-97 (12/2020): The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has, as I anticipated given the Premier Cru in question, the most generous and opulent bouquet among Grivot’s range, featuring precocious, vivacious red cherries, blueberry, violet and orange sorbet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. A voluminous and extravagant Les Suchots delivering layers of sorbet-fresh black fruit on the persistent finish. There is a thrilling crescendo, a bravura about this Les Suchots. Neal Martin. BH 92-95 (1/2021): A wide-ranging nose freely exhibits its array of soy, hoisin, star anise, sandalwood and blue pinot fruit aromas. The lavishly rich but focused full-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration while displaying excellent power on the mouth coating, sappy and compact finish where the supporting tannins are firm to the point of inducing austerity while making it clear that this too is built for long-term aging. Most impressive. |
