BH 94 (1/2008): (50+ year old vines.) Here the nose is much more deeply pitched with attractively spiced aromas that include iron-infused warm earth notes as well as animale and underbrush hints that lead to delicious, powerful and youthfully austere big-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract and a linear, concentrated and driving finish. There is real energy here and while the tannins are a bit brut at the moment, this is actually fairly refined as young Clos de Vougeot typically presents itself. Worth a close look as there is real depth here. Drink 2020+. VM 92 (3/2008): Bright red-ruby. Strong redcurrant and cherry liqueur aromas, complemented by sweet oak. Very rich and thick, with a candied, liqueur-like quality that reminded me of a chocolate truffle. Very Clos Vougeot in its medicinal, menthol character, but can't quite match the lift or class of Grivot's '05s from higher-altitude sites. This is a more earth-bound wine but there's also plenty of juice on the very long, ripely tannic finish. WA 90-91 (4/2007): A 2005 Clos Vougeot offers a nose of blackberry, wreathed in wood smoke. Firmer in tannin and with less surface polish than most of Grivot’s wines, it exhibits chalky, black-fruited depth, and overt density, palate-coating richness, but also notable freshness and grip all the way through to its long if ultimately rather austere mineral finish. Figure waiting for 5-7 years just to check back on this. |

BH 95 (1/2012): (50+ year old vines). A discreet touch of wood spice adds aromatic breadth to the earthy and reserved red berry fruit nose that also offers up a suggestion of the sauvage that carries over to the rich, powerful and admirably concentrated big-bodied flavors that culminate in an impressively long, energetic and youthfully austere finish. This is a big and muscular but not rustic example that will require plenty of cellar time. Drink 2024+. WA 94+ (4/2012): The Clos de Vougeot is gorgeous in 2009. This is an especially dark, brooding Clos Vougeot. Dark red cherries, plums, tar and licorice are some of the many notes that take shape in this explosive, beguiling Burgundy. The sheer energy and drive make the Clos Vougeot a standout. Graphite, mint and licorice linger on the pointed, focused finish. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. VM 95 (4/2012): Bright medium red. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Seamless, sappy and explosive on the palate, conveying an impression of silkiness without weight. Really explosive mouthfilling perfume here, even if there's plenty in reserve for a long and positive evolution in bottle. The wonderfully fresh, mounting finish features substantial dusty tannins and resounding black cherry and dark chocolate flavors. "The 2009s are to drink anytime," noted Grivot. "Even this Clos Vougeot would be great with grilled beef now." A great vintage for this bottling, which is partly from vines located in the so-so northeast corner of this vineyard. |

| BH 94 (1/2016): A restrained nose proposes a well-layered mix of plum, essence of cherry and pungent earth scents along with a hint of the sauvage. The textured, concentrated and powerful large-scaled flavors possess remarkable density on the mid-palate thanks to the abundant dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine and slightly softens the austere and serious but not hard finale. As good as the 1ers in the range are, there is simply another dimension of depth present here. In sum this is terrific but patience will definitely be required. Drink 2028+. |

BH 94 (1/2016): A background application of wood is sufficiently subtle to allow the notably spicy and ripe yet quite cool aromas of both red and black pinot fruit, herbal tea and floral elements to shine. There is excellent volume to the intense and tautly muscular middle weight plus flavors that culminate in an explosively long, mouth coating and moderately austere finale where a hint of bitter cherry arises. Grivot is one of few domaines where their Ech is easily a match for their Clos de Vougeot in terms of size, weight and power and overall this is potentially terrific. VM 93 (10/2023): The 2013 Echézeaux Grand Cru was picked around 3 October. It has an intense redcurrant, raspberry and marmalade-tinged bouquet. There's fine focus, and graphite touches come through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rugged tannins, fine acidity and dark red fruit laced with black olive and sea salt. It has a muscular finish with just a slight but welcome bitterness. This Grivot is a little too assertive, yet I cannot help falling for its charms. Very fine. Neal Martin. |

| BH 92-95 (1/2017): (from Les Cruots which is also known as Vignes Blanches.) Mild reduction and wood render the nose unreadable today. By contrast, there is a lovely sense of freshness and vivacity to the concentrated, muscular and superbly rich medium weight plus flavors that possess a highly seductive mouth feel while delivering outstanding length on the powerful finish. This is firm but really quite refined and while this should age effortlessly it should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years or so. Drink 2030+. |

BH 91-94 (1/2018): (from 70+ year old vines.) Here the wood treatment isn't subtle though neither is it sufficient to overshadow the wonderfully fresh and layered nose of blue pinot fruit, cassis, earth and broad range of spice elements. The mouthfeel of the broad-shouldered flavors is equally seductive and even sleeker but despite the generous mid-palate there is solid muscle and a firm core of tannins supporting the powerful and driving finish. As big as this is, it still manages to remain refined and well-balanced. Lovely stuff but once again, extended patience will be required if you wish to experience this at its peak. Drink 2031+. Outstanding! VM 91-93 (1/2018): Full red-ruby. Pure, subtly perfumed aromas of blackberry, spices and licorice. Dense but youthfully linear, showing lovely finesse of texture to its tight-grained flavors of dark fruits, spices and saline minerality lifted by violet. With its compact kernel of fruit, this is neither sweet nor easygoing today, but its precision and definition call to mind a 2014, or even a 2010. Finishes classically dry and firmly tannic, with very persistent flavors of black fruits, spices and bitter chocolate. This very promising wine will need time in bottle to harmonize and expand. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 91-93 (1/2018): A slightly fresher if earthier and less obvious spicy nose displays notes of essence of red currant and a discreet floral touch. There is a sleek muscularity to the much more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that deliver excellent punch and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and complex finale. This is quite firm and a bit youthfully austere as well but I suspect that the impeccable balance will allow it to be enjoyable young. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! VM 90-92 (1/2018): Slightly reduced and a bit lower-pitched than the Rouges, offering aromas of black raspberry complicated by soil tones. Plusher, sweeter and more pliant on entry than the Rouges, then juicy and alive in the middle palate but a bit inexpressive in the early going. Tightens up on the back end, finishing with a firm edge. A bit disorganized today and in need of further elevage. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 89-91 (1/2018): Moderate wood influence still allows the spicy red and dark currant aromas trimmed in warm earth to shine. There is both good volume and concentration to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that display a sleek muscularity on the more slightly complex and persistent finale. This is quite firm and serious but even so I would describe it as more Vosne than Nuits in 2016. A quality villages. Drink 2024+.Outstanding! VM 89-92 (1/2018): Dark red with ruby highlights. Subtle scents of black cherry and dark raspberry complicated by menthol and violet. Juicy, spicy and energetic but a bit youthfully imploded, displaying an almost metallic minerality; aeration brought suppler notes of redcurrant and earth and a sexy spicy sweetness. VM 95+ (4/2016): Bright dark red. Precise, high-pitched aromas of red cherry, raspberry, licorice and mint. Utterly spherical, fine-grained wine with outstanding intensity; conveys a powerful impression of force but without any hardness or brutality. The pungent red berry flavors are complicated by suggestions of leather and game and given further punch by strong underlying minerality. Finishes with big, broad, building tannins that will require patience. Boasts outstanding inner-mouth tension and energy, but the sensuality of Vosne-Romanée is also on display here. A great showing. Stephen Tanzer. BH 95 (1/2016): This undoubtedly possesses the most floral nose of these 2013 grands crus with its notes of lilac, violet and rose petal along with a broad range of spice elements adding nuance to the dark berry fruit liqueur aromas. There is superb volume and intensity to the pungent mineral-driven and imposingly-scaled flavors that exude focused power on the extract-rich, explosively long and beautifully well-detailed finale. As good as the Echézeaux is, and it is indeed superb, the Riche is flat out great. As I have consistently underscored with the Grivot '13s though do not buy this wine in the hopes of instant, or even early, gratification as the Riche is going to require a very long snooze in a cool cellar. |

| BH 93-96 (1/2017): (from Richebourg proper.) This too is sufficiently reduced as to render it difficult to assess. By contrast, the big-bodied, powerful and incredibly rich flavors are tighter and less forthcoming with strikingly good underlying material while displaying stunningly fine depth on the mineral-inflected and wonderfully persistent finish. This too is blessed with seemingly unending reserves of dry extract that do an excellent job of buffering the very firm tannic spine. Patience, and lots of it, is absolutely essential here. BH 97 (1/2019): (from Richebourg proper.) Here too there is a touch of wood hovering in the background of the reticent but wonderfully spicy, airy and cool array of mostly dark berry fruit and floral aromas. The tautly muscular and intensely mineral-driven large-scaled flavors possess innate power that drench the palate in dry extract while delivering gorgeous depth and length on the dusty and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. This is magnificent though like the Clos de Vougeot and the Echezeaux, it would be virtually pointless to open a bottle young and besides, there is so much potential that it would be a shame to waste it. Drink 2038+. VM 95-98 (1/2018): Bright red with ruby tones. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate are lifted by a violet topnote. Utterly suave on entry, conveying outstanding precision and energy to its flavors of black and blue fruits and crushed rock, with a piquant hint of bitter orange marmalade contributing to the overall impression of nobility. Suave, toothdusting tannins are totally supported by fruit and the seamless, palate-saturating finish perfumes the mouth with minerals, violet and Valrhona bitter chocolate, going on for a minute or more. As charismatic as this young Richebourg is today, it's far from the most demonstrative wine in the cellar. It will need at least a decade of bottle aging and should last for at 25 to 30 years in a cool cellar. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 90 (4/2017): Moderately saturated medium red Livelier on the nose than the Charmois, with scents of black cherry, graphite and dark chocolate lifted by a floral quality At once sweet and savory on the palate, with lovely acidity framing the red berry and cherry fruit flavors and extending the finish Suaver and more pliant than the Charmois but the wine's more serious tannins and an element of peppery lift on the back end call for at least a couple years of patience. Stephen Tanzer. BH 90 (1/2017): Here the expressive and overtly spicy nose is fresh and lovely with its floral, herbal tea, plum and cassis-suffused aromas. There is fine richness to the succulent and fleshy medium weight flavors that possess a relatively refined mouth feel thanks to the fine grain of the supporting tannins on the sappy and well-balanced finale. This is a terrific Vosne villages and highly recommended. |

| BH 91-93 (1/2012): A cool, reserved and intensely floral nose is gorgeously spiced with ripe red berry fruit aromas that offer up attractive notes of red cherry liqueur. The equally cool and restrained medium weight flavors possess excellent structural ripeness as well as fine size, weight and power on the intense, harmonious and mouth coating finish. This is a classic Vosne that is stylish, classy and should age beautifully. Drink 2022+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

VM 92-95 (1/2018): (Grivot is aging this wine in 50% new oak but seasoned the barrels first with a Chardonnay vinification; all of the fruit from the lower section of this site was lost to frost but the terraces were unaffected): Bright red-ruby. Pure but reticent scents of dark raspberry, bitter chocolate and spices are accented by a touch of gunflint minerality. Sappy and fine-grained, offering terrific intensity and depth to its precise flavors of dark berries and spices. Grivot has long thought that his Aux Brûlees vines on a south-facing terrace are too sun-drenched in warmer years, but he noted that this is the first vintage he has really liked for its energy and sophistication, describing the wine as "less Brigitte Bardot than normal." He credits this to more intracellular fermentation with a higher percentage of whole berries. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91-94 (1/2018): A cool, super-fresh and restrained nose offers up airy aromas of essence of black pinot fruit, violet, anise and a discreet hint of wood spice. The dense, powerful and muscular big-bodied flavors possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, which is important because the tannic spine is unmistakably present on the robust and mineral-driven finish. While it would not be entirely fair to describe this as rustic, it flirts with it, yet a fine Brûlees almost always becomes seductive in time. Recommended if you have the patience to cellar it for the longer-term. Drink 2031+. Outstanding! |

| BH 90-93 (1/2009): Here the nose expresses a completely different personality compared to the Brûlees as this is cooler, more discreet and more reserved though there is a similar breadth of spice elements present that clearly identify the wine as a fine Vosne. The linear, direct and more obviously mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors are strikingly energetic and also stain the palate on the lingering finish. Like the straight Vosne villages, this is Cistercian in its restraint at present and wonderfully classy. Drink 2015+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| BH 91-93 (1/2017): A discreet application of wood frames the exuberantly spicy and notably ripe aromas of dark currant, violet and Asian-style tea. The rich, sleek and mineral-driven flavors display focused power on the saline, punchy and strikingly long finale. This beauty is more firmly structured and will need a few years first. Drink 2027+. BH 92-95 (1/2011): Moderate reduction blocks an evaluation of the nose but the ripe, rich, generous and fleshy medium-bodied flavors are pure silk and velvet on the lacy and stunningly long finish. This is easily the most seductive wine in the range yet the buried tannins will permit this to have a long life. In short, this is a textbook Suchots. (Drink starting 2021). VM 92-95 (5/2011): The 2009 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots is likely to require considerable patience. A dark core of introspective fruit occasionally emerges, but this remains reticent and inward. The wine will not come to the taster, rather readers will have to seek out the qualities that lie within this superbly pedigreed, exceptional wine. The finish is long, weightless and totally divine. (Drink between 2019-2034). Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95-97 (12/2020): The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has, as I anticipated given the Premier Cru in question, the most generous and opulent bouquet among Grivot’s range, featuring precocious, vivacious red cherries, blueberry, violet and orange sorbet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. A voluminous and extravagant Les Suchots delivering layers of sorbet-fresh black fruit on the persistent finish. There is a thrilling crescendo, a bravura about this Les Suchots. Neal Martin. BH 92-95 (1/2021): A wide-ranging nose freely exhibits its array of soy, hoisin, star anise, sandalwood and blue pinot fruit aromas. The lavishly rich but focused full-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration while displaying excellent power on the mouth coating, sappy and compact finish where the supporting tannins are firm to the point of inducing austerity while making it clear that this too is built for long-term aging. Most impressive. |
