| BH 92 (8/2011): I had not had this wine in many years as the last was in 2000 but that bottle showed better than this most recent one that was marred by both brett and some volatile acidity. A note that I believe is more representative follows: A classically styled Musigny with a superb nose of violets, black fruits and incredibly seductive secondary aromas followed by big, rich, structured flavors and a long, textured and velvety finish. |

| WA 87 (12/1993): The two selections from Prieur's estate vineyards in the Cote de Nuits include a soft, rich, fragrant, expansively flavored, luscious 1991 Musigny. Although it lacks complexity and concentration, it is ripe, fragrant, and delicious for drinking over the next 7-8 years. |

VM 95 (4/2008): Bright ruby-red. Very ripe, pure aromas of black raspberry, cocoa powder, flowers, spices and minerals. At once thick and lively on entry, then wonderfully sweet and harmonious in the middle palate, with a spherical shape and seamless texture I have rarely noted in the past from this estate's red wines. There's an almost liqueur-like warmth to this suave, silky wine but underlying minerality keeps it fresh and delineated. Finishes with superb finesse of tannins and explosive fruit and minerality. This may be a hotter site than Prieur's Echezeaux, but this cuvee too is a major success in 2005.
WA 94-95 (6/2007): The Prieur 2005 Musigny delivers a gorgeous bouquet of diverse, sweet flowers, cassis laced, with lemon zest, spices and humus. Sleek, polished and silken-textured in the mouth, this wine offers superb concentration of super-ripe fruit with marrowy meatiness, but with more refinement and youthful class than the Chambertin, not to mention a buoyancy and dynamism and a sheer infectious juiciness in its finish, loaded with bitter-sweet florals.
BH 93-96 (4/2007): This is also exceptionally classy and refined with spicy and fresh black and blue berry fruit aromas that complement to perfection the rich, powerful and massive flavors that manage to retain a wonderful sense of detail on the almost sternly structured finish yet the sap buffers any austerity. This is a big Musigny but for all the size and weight, the balance is impeccable. Potentially the best wine in the range if only barely. Don't miss! Drink: 2020+. |

WS 95 (6/2011): An aerial red, lacy in texture, evoking notes of rose, peony, strawberry, raspberry and spice. Yet this has its feet on the ground as well, with a mineral element that emerges on the lingering finish. Shows lovely harmony and sophistication. Best from 2014 through 2030. 15 cases imported.
VM 92+ (4/2011): Bright, deep red. Exotic berry aromas are complicated by violet, cocoa, coffee and toast. Then almost surprisingly supple and sweet on the palate, showing a more attractive early balance and more finesse than the 2009 version. The spicy acidulated fruit and floral flavors convey a strong impression of energy. Finishes classically dry and saline, with peppery acidity and a slightly youthful toughness.
BH 92-95 (4/2010): (from a .77 ha parcel in the sub-climat Combe d'Orveau). The spicy and densely fruited nose is stunningly elegant with breathtaking purity and is followed by rich, intense and powerful broad-scaled flavors that are naturally sweet and precise, all culminating in an explosive and highly persistent finish. This is by no means a really big Musigny yet it is impeccably well-balanced, fresh and complete. In sum, this is a seriously fine effort. Drink 2023+. Don't miss!
WA 91-92+ (6/2010): Prieur’s 2008 Musigny displays rich, ripe cherry and blackberry fruit though not the vivacity or brightness I associate with most of the best wines of its vintage. That this wine grows at the cru’s heat-trapping southern edge might be offered as one explanation of this, but in fact, as a group the Prieur 2008s are long on sweetness of fruit and new wood but not on liveliness or cut. Here, there is a quite stewed fruit character, with humus, nutmeg, tobacco, black tea, and chalk adding variety; sumptuous richness; and a lingering, sweet finish. I miss the floral, mineral, and carnal dimension that this great site is capable of projecting, but in its rather opaque manner, this certainly impresses, and perhaps it will gain focus and complexity in the final months of its elevage. I expect it could be safely followed for 12-15 years. |
