WA 90 (6/2004): A big, fruity, rich St.-Emilion with surprising elegance for its flamboyant personality, this blend of 70% Merlot, 24% Caberent Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits copious quantities of dried herbs intermixed with new saddle leather, black currants, cherries, smoke, and licorice. Medium-bodied, with good purity, low acidity, and ripe tannin, it will drink well for 10-12 years.
WS 90 (3/2004): Impressive aromas of blackberries and toasted oak. Full-bodied, with lovely rich fruit and refined tannins. Long and caressing. Give it time to come together. I actually like it better than the 2000. This family-owned estate does very good things. Best after 2008. 5,000 cases made.
VM 89+ (6/2004): Dark red. Superripe, sappy aromas of raspberry liqueur, coffee and smoky oak. An attractive, pliant midweight, with raspberry, plum, truffle and oak flavors nicely framed by juicy acids. A seductive, nicely balanced wine with good backbone for aging. Finishes with sweet tannins. |

WA 94+ (6/2015): A beautiful wine from Beau-Sejour Becot, the color of the 2005 is an opaque purple and the wine is loaded with notes of cedar wood, Asian spice, blackberry and cassis fruit. Full-bodied and tannic, but broad, huge, and massive, this wine is still an infant and needs another 7-10 years of cellaring. This is a 40- to 50-year wine from the Becot family.
NM 92 (7/2013): The Beau-Sejour-Becot 2005 appears to be on an upward curve. It has a lovely ripe nose of strawberry preserve, mulberry, sloe and a hint of game that is very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with s ripe, rounded entry. Lush in the mouth, the pH is nicely in synch with fruit, the finish elegant and very pure. It offers lovely mocha tinged red fruit on the long persistent finish. I wonder if continued bottle age will see yet higher scores in the future? Tasted December 2012.
VM 92 (6/2008): Good ruby-red. Very ripe but lively aromas of kirsch, licorice, bitter chocolate, nuts and violet. Dense and sweet but vibrant, with a medicinal reserve and terrific grip to the superripe fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. Wonderfully rich, pliant wine with late-arriving tannins and a terrific spine for a slow evolution in bottle. Much more tightly wound today than the Becot family's La Gomerie, but there's plenty of fat fruit lurking.
WS 92 (3/2008): Offers aromas of blackberry, coffee and tar, with a full body, silky tannins and a blackberry, mineral and light vanilla aftertaste. Balanced, refined and pretty. Best after 2014. 5,830 cases made. |

JS 93-94 (4/2017): This is really beautiful in 2016 showing blackberry, blueberry and walnut character. Full-bodied, tight and focussed with fantastic length. Serious. Best ever modern vintage?
WS 92-95 (4/2017): Inviting, with a core of warm fig and boysenberry fruit backed by a hefty dose of anise and fruitcake. Sweet spice accents through the toasted finish. |

JD 96+ (3/2021): This estate makes an incredibly classic, elegant Saint-Emilion. The 2018 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is based on 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon that was brought up in 65% new French oak. Coming from a beautiful terroir on the upper plateau, it reveals a deep purple/ruby color as well as perfumed cassis and mulberry fruits intermixed with ample spring flowers, chalky minerality, violets, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated on the palate, it has terrific mid-palate depth, flawless balance, background oak, and polished yet significant tannins. If you want to know what limestone soil gives to a wine, try this! It has the polish and balance to offer pleasure today, yet the cellar will be your friend. This warrants 5-7 years of bottle age and will have 30+ years of prime drinking.
VM 96 (3/2021): The 2018 Beau-Séjour Bécot has really closed down since I tasted it en primeur. Inky red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint and blood orange gradually open in the glass, all framed by veins of chalky minerality. The 2018 is a fabulous wine in the making, but readers have to be patient. Time in a decanter or simply in the glass helps to bring out the wine's considerable depth. Antonio Galloni.
WA 94+ (3/2021): The 2018 Beau-Sejour Becot is a blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it slips slowly, sensuously from the glass with notes of boysenberries, black raspberries, baked plums and chocolate-covered cherries, plus hints of star anise, dried Provence herbs and lavender. The medium to full-bodied palate offers soft textured, perfumed black fruit layers with just enough freshness and a lifted finish. A little closed and shy at this youthful stage, give it a good 5-6 years in bottle and enjoy it over the next 25 years or more. |

WA 95-97+ (5/2021): Displaying a deep purple-black color, the 2020 Beau-Sejour Becot prances out of the glass with showy scents of preserved plums, chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries and raspberry preserves, plus suggestions of rose oil, ground cloves and licorice. The elegantly crafted, medium-bodied palate shimmers with energy, offering a fantastic intensity of crunchy red and black fruits, supported by fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Simply stunning.
VM 92-94 (5/2021): The 2020 Beau-Sejour Becot was picked 8 September until 30 September, but mostly between 8-12 September, around 70% of the production. It is one of the highest percentages of Merlot in recent years partly due to restructuring of the vineyard and also higher yields (47-48hl/ha) compared to the Cabernets. With no SO2 used during fermentation and matured in 55% new oak (20hl Stockinger and Taransaud foudres and regular barriques) it is tightly wound on the nose, so I afforded the sample an hour to really open. It offers predominantly red berry fruit, wild mint and traces of dried honey, more floral scents emerging, violet and iris flower blossoming with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very well judged acidity, a very graceful and unpretentious Saint-emilion, harmonious with a touch of white pepper enhancing the precise finish. This is a classically styled Beau-Sejour Becot that conveys a brooding intensity, so I would give it several years in the cellar. Neal Martin.
JD 94-96 (5/2021): The vivid purple-hued 2020 Château Beau-Sejour Becot is another ethereal, incredibly perfumed, mineral-laced Saint-Emilion, which is common from wines from the upper, limestone plateau. Gorgeous cassis and black cherry fruits as well as floral notes, violets, and chalky minerality all define the nose, and it’s medium-bodied, has wonderfulness and purity, and reveals a liqueur of rocks-like minerality on the finish. It’s another thrillingly complete wine from this team that shines for its purity, elegance, and complexity.
JS 96-97 (4/2021): This has a fantastic finish with crushed blackberries and raspberries and salt undertones. It’s full-bodied, yet really racy and polished with such fine, intense tannins. Love the length to this. Very distinguished and toned. Excellent energy. 85% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon. |
