| VM 89 (12/2023): The 2019 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru has a much more understated bouquet—low-key and more tertiary in style, with finely-delineated dark cherries and hints of bergamot tea mixed with bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins. Quite a polished Beaune Grèves, there is a sumptuousness to this wine with a lightly spiced finish, though it doesn't quite have the complexity or mineralité of its peers. I've had better bottles. | BH 94 (4/2012): (from Domaine-owned fruit in two similarly sized parcels - one at the top and the other at the bottom of the slope.) This is really quite aromatically refined, indeed the expressive nose is highly perfumed and speaks of floral, plum and black cherry scents layered with a subtle earthiness. The sense of refinement continues onto the palate as the focused, intense and sleekly muscular flavors evidence good power on the balanced, long and only moderately austere finish. As Clos de Vougeot typically goes, this is a very refined example. Drink 2025+. Don't miss! |

BH 90-92 (4/2019): A markedly spicy nose is again not super-fresh but neither are the aromas of plum, violet and Asian-tea dull. The middle weight flavors possess slightly better freshness than the nose while displaying lovely delineation on the stony and lightly austere finish where a hint of bitter cherry arises. (Drink starting 2029).
VM 89-91 (1/2019): The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru, from the lieu-dit of La Combe d’Orveau, just feels a little overdone on the nose, figs and dates suffusing the glossy red fruit. The palate is ripe and powerful. An intense Echézeaux, but lacking the grace and finesse that I have found in some of it peers. Maybe it will ameliorate with bottle age. (Drink between 2022-2036). WA 86-88 (1/2019): The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru offers up aromas of grilled meat, ripe fruit and dark chocolate, followed by a full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's somewhat figgy and firm. It's seemingly somewhat overripe in profile this year, though it may just have been out of sorts when I tasted it. |

| BH 94 (4/2012): A brooding but impressively complex nose features notes of red currant, plum, earth and plenty of that Corton sauvage character. The textured, intense and broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration with fully mature structural elements. There is ample buffering sap, which is important as one would reasonably expect, this is a big and sleekly muscled wine with an explosively long, linear and overtly austere finish. The potential here is mostly impressive though note that plenty of patience is requisite. Drink 2025+. Don't miss! |

JS 94-95 (2/2018): The chalky and stony notes are intermingled with pastry and red to dark cherries, all leading to a palate that shows good acidity, impressive depth and weight of tannins. A cool vintage expression with more intensity at the finish. This will age very well. Try from 2024.
BH 93-95 (4/2018): Very, very generous wood treatment is sufficiently toasty to presently dominate the otherwise layered nose of dark cherry, raspberry, earth and sauvage-inflected aromas. There is superb concentration, power and richness to the big-bodied flavors that possess excellent reserves of dry extract that helps to buffer the exceptionally firm tannic spine shaping the superbly long mineral-driven finish. This is at once impressive as hell but it's also very woody and while the underlying material appears to be more than sufficient to eventually integrate the oak, it will require time for this to happen. Drink 2036+. Don't miss!
VM 92-95 (1/2018): (these high-altitude vines produced a normal crop in 2016): Moderately saturated dark red. Sexy if slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, tarte au prune and game, with some new oak showing. Very rich, dense and pliant, conveying a distinctly relaxed quality for the vintage. This plump, large-scaled grand cru finishes with superb restrained sweetness, noteworthy finesse of tannins, and serious building length, with its lightly saline black raspberry fruit complemented by an almost chocolatey ripeness. Thick, huge and almost aggressively youthful; very powerful but is it pinot? Firm acids give shape to the flavors. Finishes quite powerful and long, with a late note of coffee. |

VM 95+ (10/2006): Pale, bright color. A quintessence of Corton-Charlemagne dirt on the nose: stone fruits, lemon, iodine, ginger, minerals and mint, all complicated by a musky, leesy note that reminded me of a Coche-Dury wine. Then compellingly dense and penetrating in the mouth, with captivating, soil-driven flavors of raw pineapple, white peach, white flowers and crushed rock; a sulfidey complexity and a saline element add to the wine's spectacular subtle complexity. Hardly a blockbuster but conveys an impression of great solidity. This remarkably precise wine coats the palate with dusty stone and leaves behind a suggestion of honey. My sample at Bouchard in early June was painfully young and closed though obviously Outstanding, but this bottle, tasted in New York in August, was spectacular. (Incidentally, my following notes on the Chevalier-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte and Montrachet were from bottles tasted at Bouchard-also quite backward at the time-and I would expect my scores to prove to be conservative.)
BH 93 (11/2010): I have not had this since cask and the bottle in question had a tattered label though no apparent seepage. As such| it's difficult to know whether this bottle was indeed representative as it seemed relatively supple and forward| indeed more or less ready to drink. To be sure| there was no obvious secondary nuances in evidence and still good freshness to the rich| intense and vibrant flavors brimming with minerality on the impressively long finish. Impeccably stored bottles might need another few years to arrive at their peak but absent this bottle being an aberration| I don't think that opening one today would be infanticide. Drink now+.
WS 92 (3/2007): Tightly wound and minerally. Lean yet intense, with lemon, apple and oak spice flavors complementing the stone note. Builds nicely on the palate, fleshing out and then lingering, with an aftertaste of spice and mineral. Best from 2009 through 2020. 130 cases imported. |

| BH 93 (6/2019): A cool and admirably pure nose displays notes of green apple, floral, citrus and a hint of wood toast. There is excellent volume, power and punch to the well-detailed and overtly stony broad-shouldered flavors that coat the palate on the impressively long finish that also reflects a bitter lemon nuance. While this is a classically styled CC, it remains relatively refined and should drink reasonably well after only 5 years or so of bottle age. Drink 2027+. |

BH 94-96 (7/2011): This is also notably ripe yet remains very fresh; indeed there is noticeable restraint to the cool, pure and quite dense floral, citrus and orchard fruit aromas that included spiced pear, apple and both yellow and white peach. The powerful and almost painfully intense flavors ooze dry extract that buffers the quite firm acid spine that shapes the driving and explosively long finish where ample minerality surfaces. This is a sizeable but not truly massive effort that remains exceptionally well-balanced despite its density. Terrific potential.
VM 94-97 (10/2010): Pale yellow. Aromas of very ripe peach and pineapple enlivened by more delicate crushed stone. Rich, fully ripe and hugely deep, with great complexity to its flavors of stone fruits, flowers and spices. Near-perfect phenolic maturity here (the potential alcohol was 13.2% and the wine finished close to 13.5%). The finish boasts outstanding palate-staining persistence and an ineffable floral character. One of the longest 2009s I tasted in Burgundy on my spring tour, and not at all an austere style of Montrachet. According to Prost, Bouchard has been picking its Montrachet later and later, and DRC earlier and earlier. "In 2009, we picked on the same day," he told me. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 92-94 (12/2020): A blend of two parcels, the 2019 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru was the first to be picked by Bouchard in this appellation. The well-defined bouquet features touches of lemon thyme, walnut and smoke. The palate is balanced with fine acidity, fresh and focused. The pretty, apricot-tinged finish fans out wonderfully and leaves residues of grilled almond and sesame on the aftertaste. Excellent. Neal Martin. |
