JS 96 (7/2017): This shows a beautiful complexity of ripe fruit such as cherries as well as orange peel undertones with lemon and pineapple highlights. Medium body and well-defined tannins. Drink in 2020. WS 94 (10/2017): A fragrant style, offering rose, cherry, earth, mineral and cumin aromas and flavors. Young and tense, yet shows fine potential, with complex flavors, good structure and a long aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2040. 1,500 cases made. WA 93+ (6/2017): It may be a so-called entry level Barolo, but the 2013 Barolo Bussia definitely delivers the goods. Fruit is sourced from three separate points within the larger Bussia cru. These sites are characterized by clay soils with southeast exposures and approximately 25-year-old vines. The quality of fruit is very intense and defined with dark cherry and dried blackberry. Yet the mouthfeel is ethereal, light and buoyant. Keeping in line with the vintage, the tannins are firm and slightly rigid. However, they are well absorbed by the exuberant nature of the fruit. The wine's personality is reminiscent of the Barolo Bussia Cicala. |

JS 96 (1/2019): Gorgeous aromas of dark berries, cedar and very ripe fruit that follow through to a full body, deep and dense tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Plush. Drink from 2022. WS 94 (2/2020): Ripe and broad, retaining a lively feel that defines the macerated plum, licorice, leather, tar and spice flavors. Shows an underlying streak of iron and a hint of black pepper as this winds down on the long finish. The tannins are assertive, balanced by ample fruit. Best from 2024 through 2045. 1,583 cases made, 500 cases imported. WA 93 (6/2019): The 2015 Barolo Bussia is painted in the broadest of brush strokes when compared to the other wines tasted this year, which each hail from their own specific micro cru within the larger Bussia vineyard. This makes sense, because this wine sees fruit sourced from a much wider net. You do get a great sense of the vintage intensity and succulence with pretty layers of sweet fruit, rose, tilled earth and delicate button mushroom. This wine shows its pedigree with confidence. Some 15,000 bottles were made. |

JS 96 (7/2012): The grapes in this are grown in more clay soil than Colonello, which is sandy. Love the aromas of strawberries and flowers. Pure fruit. Even hints of strawberry leafs. Full body with chewy tannins. This needs more bottle age than the Colonello. Don't touch for at least five years. WA 95 (4/2012): The 2008 Barolo Cicala is beautifully focused and vibrant from start to finish. It boasts fabulous energy and sheer tension in its ripe red berries, spices, crushed flowers and mint. All the elements come together beautifully in this pure, delineated Barolo. Huge, powerful tannins provide the backdrop for layers of cool, mineral-infused fruit. There is a pulsating energy to the Cicala that is absolutely irresistible. This is another fabulous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028. WS 95 (2/2013): There's fine depth to this red, like a grand cru red Burgundy, with a silky texture framing black cherry, black currant and tar flavors. Solidly built, this features a deceptively charming exterior that conceals firm tannins. The finish evokes violet and black cherry notes. Best from 2016 through 2035. 250 cases imported. VM 93+ (10/2011): Full, bright ruby-red. Deep aromas of black cherry, cassis, licorice, minerals and menthol. Rich, sweet and broad, with a lush texture and impressive fullness to the black fruit flavors. Less easygoing today than the Colonnello but more filled in. Finishes with granular tannins and impressive length. The sandy, calcareous soil here is more typical of Monforte and Castiglione Falletto, notes Giacomo Conterno. |

VM 97 (1/2014): Conterno's 2010 Barolo Cicala boasts razor-sharp minerality and acidity in support of the beautifully delineated, resonant fruit. Rose petals, tar, licorice, dark cherries and tobacco are some of the many nuances that burst from the glass in an exotic, intense Barolo loaded with class and personality. The Cicala is going to require considerable patience, but it is a stunner. Vivid and alive through to the finish, the Cicala is easily one of the wines of this great Barolo vintage. Antonio Galloni. |

JS 96 (4/2015): A chewy and rich Barolo with dried mushroom, berry and hazelnut character. Full body, round and silky tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Layered and complex. Better in 2018 but so delicious. WA 93+ (6/2015): The 2011 Barolo Bussia Cicala shows a slightly warmer side to the Bussia cru, although in general I am very impressed with how this single vineyard has performed. You get subtle wood influences here, but the quality of fruit is on prime display. Black cherry, cassis and wild berry lift graciously from the bouquet. Heavier aromas of spice, resin and black licorice add a sense of gravitas and grounded vigor. Bussia Cicala is aged in Slovenian botte for 28 months and already shows excellent potential for a sure and steady evolution. WS 93 (12/2015): A spicy version, this red mingles woodsy cedar and sandalwood flavors with steeped cherry and leather notes. Shows plenty of grip on the back end, yet offers character, sweet fruit and a lengthy aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2033. 125 cases imported. VM 91 (3/2015): Conterno's 2011 Barolo Cicala is decidedly ripe and flashy in this vintage, with exotic overtones and unusually jammy fruit. Dry, austere tannins clamp down through the mid-palate and finish, a sign of the hail that was an issue here in 2011. Hints of kirsch, sweet red cherry and plum struggle to open up in the glass, but the tannins are a bit too much today. It will be interesting to see how the Cicala develops, but today, the class and pedigree of this site does not come through fully. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 92 (2/2020): The 2015 Barolo Colonnello packs a serious punch. Macerated dark cherry, kirsch, spice, leather, licorice, blood orange and a kick of sweet oak all open up this powerful, strapping Barolo. The 2015 offers a good bit of immediacy, but there is plenty of tannin as well. The warmth of the year is evident in the wine’s ripe profile. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 96+ (1/2014): The 2010 Barolo Romirasco stands out for its pure texture and balance. Today the 2010 is a bit compact, but that is not at all surprising given its underlying structure and very recent bottling. Those two factors considered, the 2010 Romirasco is a wine with tremendous future. The style is a little more sensual and less severe than the Cicala, with generally softer contours, all which should give it a slight upper hand in terms of accessibility. Antonio Galloni. |

JS 97 (3/2016): Very earthy and intense with ripe fruit and hints of bark and mushrooms. Full body, powerful and chewy. Great tannin structure. Better in 2020. WA 93 (6/2016): Poderi Aldo Conterno's Bussia Romirasco sees a few extra months of oak aging. The 2012 Barolo Bussia Romirasco greatly benefits from that extra wood. Because the fruit in 2012 is less expressive overall, the Romirasco signature touch bodes well for its texture, heft and its aromatic delivery. This Barolo offers pretty richness and density with thick lines and deep concentration. The oak needs more years to integrate, but I feel confident that it will reach harmony, with time, given the wine's generous structure and fruity richness. WS 92 (3/2017): Hints of vanilla and Bourbon waft from the glass and wrap around the core of cherry in this stylish, elegant red. A bit oaky now, with an added layer of tannins. Offers a fine finish of tobacco and spice. Best from 2020 through 2034. 400 cases made. VM 89 (11/2016): The 2012 Barolo Romirasco is the best of these wines. Dark cherry, mocha, chocolate, smoke and plum notes give the 2012 its distinctly deep, powerful personality. From Romirasco I expect to see intense, balsamic-inflected aromatics and salivating energy. There is little, if any, of that here. The 2012 is a solid wine if taken on its own terms, but it is an underachiever relative to both the potential of this site and vintage. Antonio Galloni. |
