WA 95 (2/2005): The stunning 2002 Variation One (70% Merlot and 30% Syrah) exhibits an exotic, opulent personality with a deep purple color, and sweet aromas of cocoa, new saddle leather, black raspberries, cassis, and acacia flowers. Full-bodied, with beautifully integrated oak (all of these wines are aged in 100% new French wood), wonderful sweetness, tremendous delineation, and laser-like clarity and transparency of character. A beauty, it is ideal for drinking over the next 10-15 years. VM 93+ (5/2005): ((100) Good medium ruby. Brooding, medicinal aromas of inky black fruits. Tougher today than the 2003 from barrel, but offers Outstanding flavor intensity and clarity, with notes of black raspberry, spice, licorice and chocolate emerging with aeration. Less obviously sweet today than the 2003 (I might have picked this blind as a classic Bordeaux blend including petit verdot and cab franc), but finishes with superb breadth of tannins. "The H Block is an homage to more refined Old World wines," notes Kongsgaard, "while this is more California exotic." |

WA 93-95 (2/2005): The 2003 Kenefick Ranch Cuvee (a 400-case lot of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot) exhibits an inky/ruby/purple color along with a gorgeous perfume of smoke, blueberry liqueur, creme de cassis, white chocolate, and espresso roast. Dense, opulent, and full-bodied, with a terrific texture as well as palate penetration, and a 40-45 second finish, it is capable of lasting a decade or more. VM 91+ (6/2005): Medium ruby. Cool, pure aromas of cassis, licorice and violet. Juicy, dry and lively, with excellent flavor intensity and enticing floral lift. I would have guessed this had some cabernet franc. Quite tightly wound after the bottling, and currently showing its tannic side. But this will almost certainly merit a higher rating with four or five years of additional bottle aging. In this vintage, Les Behrens used a mechanical punchdown tank for the Kenefick Ranch cabernet sauvignon-an approach that was used for more wines in 2004. |

WS 92 (2/2007): (WS #100 wine of 2007) Aromas of herb, currant and cedar are richer and fuller on the palate. Firms up, with dried currant, earth, vanilla bean and herbal sage notes. The tannins are tight. Decant. Drink now through 2011. 30,192 cases made. WA 92 (12/2007): This ever-reliable producer has turned out a beautiful 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon that has plenty of black currant flavor as well as sweet toasty oak and smokiness in a nice, round, opulent sexy style that begs for drinking over the next decade. |

Dominus |
1999 |
Proprietary Blend |
$225 |

WS 95 (11/2002): A wine of great intensity, depth and complexity. Beautifully crafted, ripe, rich and creamy, showing off pretty vanilla and mocha-scented oak before a deep core of currant, blackberry, black cherry and minerally flavors fold in. Firm tannins add structure on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2004 through 2014. 7,000 cases made. VM 91+ (6/2002): Medium red-ruby. Spicy red- and blackcurrant, plum, currant leaf and mocha on the claret-like nose. Dense and rich, with spicy red berry and lightly floral flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Today one senses the wine's 13% cabernet franc component. Quite tightly coiled today; shows little sign of the roasted character shown by some '99s. Firmly tannic and very strong on the back end, with an almost medicinal austerity; very much a wine from small berries. This really needs at least seven or eight years of bottle aging; make sure to decant your bottle if you can't wait to pull the cork. Should ultimately merit a higher rating. WA 88 (8/2002): The firm, austere, large-scaled 1999 Dominus (7,000 cases) is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot that spent 16-18 months in 40% new French oak. It exhibits an attractive perfume of roasted herbs, coffee, tobacco, and sweet black cherries and plums, medium body, noticeable tannin, and a ripe, austere personality. It will drink well for 15+ years. |

WA 98 (6/2011): A brilliant showing for Christian Moueix’s well-known Napanook Vineyard, the 2001 Dominus is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. A classic in the making, this is a flawless, seamless example of elegant, complex Napa Cabernet Sauvignon that possesses a Bordeaux-like personality. This gorgeous, sexy, opulent, dense ruby/purple-colored wine reveals sweet caramel, mocha, creme de cassis and kirsch notes intermixed with a hint of espresso roast as well as underbrush. Ripe, long and full-bodied with well-integrated tannin, acidity, alcohol and wood, this prodigious 2001 is drinkable now and over the next 25+ years given this estate’s longevity track record. A virtually perfect wine, it is one of the most complex 2001s at present. VM 93+ (6/2004): Good ruby-red. Superripe aromas of plum, cherry, licorice, mocha, smoke and minerals. At once sweet and gripping, with very intense, nuanced flavors of cherry, plum, currant, tobacco, minerals and currant leaf. Despite the very high pH of 4.01, this shows no shortage of energy in the mouth. A muscular, firmly tannic, serious wine for aging. (A second sample that had been decanted for four hours prior to my visit was sweeter and more seamless, but still showed solid tannic spine.) WS 88 (11/2004): Very Bordeaux-like in its presentation, with a mix of cedary oak, ripe currant, fresh clay, earth and rose petal flavors. Rich and supple, it's well-focused and elegantly styled, gaining richness and depth on the finish, where the tannins become more evident. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Best from 2006 through 2012. 7,000 cases made. |

Bosche Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$125 |

WA 94 (5/2011): The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Bosche (from that iconic site on the west side of Rutherford planted in gravelly, loamy soils) is composed of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a classic nose of loamy soil, kirsch liqueur, Provencal garrigue, black currants and spice box. Full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and fully mature with fabulous balance, it is hard to ignore this stunning 2001. The good news is that there were 2,400+ cases made of it from this 22-acre site. It is capable of lasting another 15-20 years. |

Insignia Proprietary Blend |
$329 |
2 |
WA 100 (11/2013): The 2002 boasts an inky/purple color along with notes of graphite, violets, blackberries, creme de cassis and hints of charcoal and barbecue in addition to a full-bodied, multilayered mouthfeel that builds incrementally with great purity, staggering fruit concentration, and a long, velvety, 50+-second finish. This prodigious effort should continue to drink well for 20+ years. WS 96 (5/2012): Rich flavors fan out, the way you hope for, coating the palate with layers of currant, fresh earth, mineral, cedar, tobacco, mocha, black licorice and espresso. The tannins are firm and the structure built for a longer haul. Very much in its infancy still at age 10, it finds that unusual bridge between dense Napa fruit and a Bordeaux build. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec.—2002 California Cabernet blind retrospective (May 2012). Drink now through 2032. 15,000 cases made. VM 92+ (4/2016): (from a year featuring three heat spikes in September): Full red-ruby. Slightly roasted, high-toned black raspberry nose show a slightly pruney ripeness (the VA here was a relatively elevated 0.85). Creamy, plush and sweet, displaying excellent breadth and still-considerable baby fat. This was quite flashy on release but now seems to be in an adolescent phase. Big, building tannins saturate the tongue and front teeth. Winemaker Hepworth described it as "like a teenager, and without the suavity of tannins of the 2001." I'd leave it alone for at least a couple more years, at which point it may well merit a higher score. Stephen Tanzer. |

2007 |
Insignia Proprietary Blend |
$289 |
2 |
WA 99 (11/2013): Aged 24 months in new French oak, this infant 2007 exhibits an inky/purple color along with notes of graphite, spring flowers and smoky oak. This full-bodied, classic Insignia reveals fabulous depth, ripeness, texture, viscosity and richness. Still young and unformed, it should evolve for 25 or more years. Perhaps I should just go ahead and give this 2007 a three-digit score as it is a profoundly great Cabernet Sauvignon-based effort. The production was 13,500 cases of this 100% estate fruit blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. The alcohol came in at 14.5%. The growing season was nearly ideal, with early bud break, generous flowering, a bountiful crop size, and summer weather that was warm and dry with no significant heat spikes. According to the Phelps winemaking team, the cluster grape weights in 2007 came in 23-45% lower than average, which surprised everyone. However, the fruit quality was one of the finest they had ever seen. The result is one of the top Insignias yet produced. WS 96 (10/2010): Firm, intense and concentrated, massive yet well-proportioned, with a dense, focused core of graphite, dried currant, blackberry, black tea, forest floor and blueberry flavors. Full-blown, finishing with rich, layered tannins that beg for cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2013 through 2025. 13,500 cases made. VM 94 (6/2010): (bottled three weeks prior to my visit) Bright ruby. Claret-like nose offers cassis, minerals, bitter chocolate and strong soil tones. Densely packed and quite tight today, in a classically dry style. But there's also superb sex appeal and excellent energy to the flavors of plum, currant, licorice, bitter chocolate and spices. Most impressive today on the long, chocolatey aftertaste. |

Columbia Valley Camille Proprietary Blend Lightly Bin-Soiled Label |
$20 |
1 |
WA 92 (8/2007): The 2004 Camille is a blend of 64% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc, and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose offers up toasty oak, some pleasant herbaceousness from the Cabernet Franc, as well as red and black currants and a hint of leather. On the palate there is excellent depth and concentration, broad spicy flavors, and a long, pure finish. The ripe tannins are nicely integrated and should allow for 5-7 years of further development. This classy effort should drink well through 2040. ... WS 90 (5/2007): Velvety, round and generous with its cherry and sassafras flavors, which glide over refined tannins to the long, savory finish. Needs time to become silky. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2008 through 2012. 2,105 cases made. ... VM 88+ (12/2007): ( a blend of 64% merlot, 23% cabernet franc and 13% cabernet sauvignon) Good deep ruby-red. Blackcurrant and sexy chocolatey oak on the nose. Juicy flavors of dark berries, cocoa powder, violet and spice; this boasts very good energy. Finishes with firm tannins and plenty of cut. |

Opus One |
1999 |
Proprietary Blend Bin-Soiled Label |
$415 |
2 |
WS 93 (10/2002): An exquisite, complex, stylish wine, wearing a cloak of earthy, leathery tannins around flavors of mineral, currant, earth and blackberry. Gains intensity and shows its depth and concentration on the finish, which is long and detailed. Best from 2004 through 2012. VM 92 (12/2002): Deep red-ruby. Sappy nose combines currant, smoked meat, tobacco and exotic spices. Rich, sweet and tactile, with complex, tangy flavors of crystallized blackcurrant, caraway seed and smoked meat. Unlike most Bordeaux blends from California, this shows little greenness or gratuitous oak and the finish builds impressively. A very suave wine that finishes with fine, spreading tannins. WA 88 (12/2003): While it is a big, rich effort, the 1999 Opus One exhibits a distinct earthiness as well as a sweaty saddle-like characteristic. It builds nicely on the attack and mid-palate, but finishes short, displaying hints of herbs, chocolate, and black currants. Drink this medium-bodied offering now and over the next 7-8 years. |

Columbia Valley Proprietary Blend |
$65 |

WA 93 (8/2010): The 2007 Red Wine is composed of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, with the balance Cabernet Franc and Malbec. As always, it is a great value offering a fragrant, already complex nose of confiture of black fruits, incense, and Asian spices. On the palate it is savory and elegant with a plush texture. It is likely to evolve for several years but there is no compelling reason to defer gratification. |

VM 93 (11/2012): Good full ruby. Aromas of blackcurrant and licorice. Rich, deep and concentrated, with an almost Kahlua-like liqueur quality to its dense, exotic flavors of cassis, dark chocolate, mocha and orange peel. Very rich blend with an impressively long finish featuring fine tannins and hints of licorice pastille, dark berries, sexy Taransaud spices and black walnut. From vines planted at 3 x 6 feet, according to Paul Golitzin, "about as dense as it gets in this state." (Incidentally, 2006 was Quilceda Creek'Ss last merlot bottling; that fruit is now in the Palengat.)Stephen Tanzer. |

Jericho Canyon Vyd. Proprietary Blend Slightly Depressed Cork; Lightly Bin-Soiled Label |
$79 |
1 |
VM 94 (6/2006): Good full medium ruby. Highly nuanced and wonderfully expressive nose combines blue and black fruits and smoky oak. Fat, dense and smooth in the mouth, with superripe but fresh flavors of cassis, dark chocolate, smoke and cigar box. Finishes with big, rich, mellow tannins and lingering notes of coffee and chocolate. A very satisfying 2003 with considerable early appeal but also very good aging potential. WA 93 (12/2005): The 2003 Jericho Canyon, from a 40-acre parcel of vines at the base of Mount St. Helena, is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. This is David Ramey’s homage to Pauillac. With a big sweet nose of white chocolate, creme de cassis, cedar, spice box, and high-quality smoky oak, it is full-bodied, rich, and tannic with notes of chocolate and espresso in the mouth. This wine also needs several years of cellaring and should last 15-20 years. WS 90 (5/2006): Firm, dark and intense, with a rich, concentrated band of anise, currant, blackberry, mocha and light toasty, cedary oak. Very complex and balanced, with a finish that veers to the understated elements of the wine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2011. 1,700 cases made. |

WA 95 (2/2005): The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Estate is a 2,550-case blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. It is aged 20 months in new French oak prior to bottling. This super effort comes across as a Napa version of top-flight Pauillac. Dense ruby/purple to the rim with a gorgeous nose of smoke, cedar, burning wood fires, and creme de cassis, this powerful, intensely rich, complex Cabernet reveals notions of chocolate, charcoal, and blackberry fruit. It should age effortlessly for up to 15 or more years. VM 90 (6/2005): (blended with 9% cabernet franc and 5% each petit verdot and malbec) Medium ruby. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, cedar, loam and menthol, with a whiff of roast coffee. Rich but dry and savory; smooth and aromatic. Subtly complex flavors of currant, lead pencil, cedar, loam and menthol. Finishes with plenty of fine tannins that will need a bit of time to unwind. |

2004 |
Poker Face Syrah |
$545 |
1 |
WA 97 (6/2014): Starting off the Syrah-based wines, the 2004 Poker Face (Syrah) is aging beautifully. A blend of 96% Syrah, 2.5% Mourvedre and 1.5% Viognier (from the Eleven Confessions, White Hawk, Alban, Bien Nacido, and Alta Mesa vineyards) that was aged in 80% new French oak, it offers up a perfumed, fresh bouquet of sweet blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis, spring flowers and licorice that gives way to a full-bodied, seamless, gorgeously textured feel on the palate. Rich and decadent, it has notable, yet beautifully integrated acidity and stays remarkably fresh, detailed and even elegant. It still needs a lengthy decant to shine, and will continue to thrill over the coming decade or so. VM 96 (8/2015): The 2004 Syrah Poker Face remains deep, inky and powerful, even at eleven years of age. A host of black cherry, chocolate, licorice and smoke meld together in this dark, voluptuous Syrah. As good as the 2004 is, it's also quite clear just how far Sine Qua Non has come since the Poker Face was made. The blend is 96% Syrah, with drops of Mourvèdre and Viognier. Vineyard sources are 33% Eleven Confessions, 27% White Hawk, 22% Alban, 16% Bien Nacido and 3% Alta Mesa. Antonio Galloni. |

Colson Canyon Vyd. Syrah |
$45 |
2 |
WA 95 (8/2009): The brilliant 2007 Syrah Colson Canyon is Tensley's biggest production single vineyard Syrah. Like the other wines, it is aged in 80% neutral and 20% new French oak barrels, and is bottled with no fining or filtration. This blockbuster effort is as black as a moonless night. It offers up stunning notes of graphite, blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis, licorice, barbecue smoke, and a deep meaty character. The layered palate feel as well as the enormous richness and length result in one of the finest Syrahs being produced in California's Central Coast. It should evolve over the next 10-15 years. JD 94 (11/2009): The largest scaled and most hedonistic of the Tensley wines I was able to taste, the 2007 Tensley Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is packed with freshly crushed berries, jam, earth, subtle meat and spice aromatics. Big, sweet and intense, the wine is full bodied on the palate with a silky, light texture and a long, decadent finish where gobs of fine grained tannins come out. The sweetness to the fruit and the upfront, lush texture will make this hard to resist young. WS 94 (2/2009): (Wine Spectator #22 wine of 2009) Firm and musclebound, with rich, chewy tannins. Full-bodied, this is the most complex and potent of the 2007 Tensleys, offering layers of earthy wild berry, sage, mineral, dried currant and floral scents. Drink now through 2016. 1,259 cases made. |

WA 93-95 (2/2005): The 2003 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard displays the telltale squid ink-like color with some purple hues, and a stupendous nose of pure, black fruits intermixed with minerals, licorice, and incense. Full-bodied, with massively extracted flavors but incredibly well-balanced and vibrant, this wine needs 5-10 years of bottle-age and should age effortlessly for a quarter of a century. |

Hayne Vyd. Petite Sirah |
$75 |

WA 92-94 (12/2006): Not surprisingly, one of the great Petite Syrahs made in this vintage has again come from the Hayne Vineyard. Turley’s inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard possesses a boatload of tannin as well as a fabulously concentrated attack and mid-palate. This full-bodied monster reveals beautiful purity and intensity as well as a superb attack and richness. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the next 20-25 years. VM 91 (6/2007): Bright medium ruby. High-toned nose shows a porty ripeness to the black raspberry and bitter chocolate flavors. Wonderfully ripe, sweet and dense, with a plush texture and good inner-mouth lift. Not yet as complex as some past vintages of this wine, but the finish features impressive sweetness and a fine dusting of tannins. |

WA 94-96 (12/2010): It was difficult to chose a favorite although the 2009 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge, Hayne Vineyard and Library Vineyard are the three greatest in terms of concentration, depth and potential complexity. As I have said so many times, Petite Sirah is by far the most underrated varietal in California, so it is reassuring to see how many producers continue to make remarkable wines with around 13-14% alcohol as well as 20-40+ years of aging potential. |

1999 |
La Joie Proprietary Blend |
$150 |
1 |
WA 94 (8/2002): The 1999 La Joie (59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot) exhibits sumptuous aromas of sweet saddle leather, cigar smoke, chocolaty black currants, and blackberries. It is sweet, rich, full-bodied, complex, and tastes like a Bordeaux on steroids. This is an enormously endowed, classic, distinctive cuvee that must be tasted to be believed. It represents a synthesis between France's Medoc and Northern California's ripe fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2022. VM 94 (6/2002): (a 60/40 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Full ruby color. Smoky aromas of currant and roasted tobacco. Lush, sweet and rich; a huge wine with a silky, utterly mouthfilling texture but also plenty of underlying structure. Finishes with very fine tannins, superb sweetness and lingering notes of black cherry and violet. Built to age but distinctly user-friendly today. WS 86 (7/2002): Firm, with compact dill- and earth-laced currant, olive and blackberry. Turns tannic and leathery and reflects plenty of charred-oak aging, and while it's well-structured, the dry oakiness on the finish is a concern. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2003 through 2008. 1,900 cases made. |

WA 96 (8/2002): The terrific, opaque blue/purple-colored 1999 La Muse (a 695-case blend of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon) offers up gorgeous aromas of espresso, melted caramel, black cherry jam, tobacco, and flowers. It reveals an unctuous texture (amazing for a 1999) as well as a huge palate impact, yet great balance, purity, and overall harmony. This prodigious effort will be drinkable young, yet last for 20-25 years. I believe this is the same wine, with just a slight adjustment in the blend, that I referred to as the 1999 Merlot in issue #132. |

WA 95 (12/2003): The 2001 Le Desir (50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Malbec) is an enormously concentrated, sweet yet elegant, medium to full-bodied effort revealing intense notes of red, black, and blue fruit intermixed with camphor, lead pencil shavings, and spice box characteristics. Rich and intensely flavored yet remarkably light on its feet for such power, with beautifully integrated wood, acidity, alcohol, and tannin in the long finish, it will provide immense pleasure if drunk between 2004-2025. This is an out and out brilliant wine! |
