| WA 98 (12/1996): Mondavi's 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is an exquisite wine, as well as a Cabernet that may turn out to be one of the wines of the vintage. The deep opaque purple color, and tightly wound nose and flavors still reveal enough profound aromas and flavors to mark this as one of Mondavi's most sensational efforts. The nose possesses a Margaux/Mouton-like cassis, lead pencil, floral aroma, backed-up by copious quantities of blackcurrant fruit. In the mouth, my notes said, "great stuff." The wine is full-bodied, layered, multi-dimensional, and astonishingly well-balanced, with an inner-depth and core of exceptional richness and intensity. All of this has been accomplished without any notion of obtrusive weight, tannin, or alcohol. The finish lasts for 35+ seconds. Because of its luxurious quantity of fruit, this wine will be accessible young, thus much of it will be drunk long before it ever reaches full maturity. However, for those able to buy more than a bottle or two, and who possess the discipline to wait 10-15 years, this wine should prove to be a formidable California Cabernet with a rare complexity, elegance, and richness. It should be at its best between 2002-2025. |

VM 94 (12/1999): Deep ruby-red. Explosive, somewhat feral, highly aromatic nose of cassis, roast coffee, game, smoky oak and chocolate; shows a very strong torrefaction aspect. Lush, rich and deep; has a pliancy and degree of early personality I find in only the very best young California cabernets. Subtle notes of chocolate and tobacco contribute to the wine appeal. Finishes fairly tannic but very long. Distinctly more layered than the '95.
WA 92 (12/1998): The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve may be no better than the Oakville, but it is made in a slightly different style. The color is opaque purple, and the wine reveals more vanillin, a touch of mint, and plenty of black currant fruit in its moderately intense aromatics. Some of the vintage's dry tannin (from this year's stressed vineyard conditions) is present in the wine's finish. A more stylish, restrained, less exuberant example than the 1996 Oakville, it is an Outstanding offering that should be consumed between 2002-2025. |

| WA 95 (12/2003): There are 1,000 cases of the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon To-Kalon Reserve. Fashioned from 31-year old vines, it is a powerful, firmly structured offering revealing notes of charcoal, creamy black currants, loamy soil, and tobacco leaf. Although its pH of 3.78 is relatively high, seemingly suggesting a more forward style, it is broodingly backward and less accessible than the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a classic Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon that may not be quite as generous or complex as the Reserve or perhaps the M-Bar, but it is almost too backward to fully evaluate at present. Give it 5-6 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 20-25 years. |
