New German Cellar

Today at Flickinger Wines we would like to showcase a recently acquired cellar of just wines from Germany. This collection features wide array of rare late-harvest bottlings that are already quite mature, but the whole list has many more years of possible cellaring—I one can refrain opening. 	WA 92 (12/2002): Gunderloch's 2001 Riesling Auslese Nackenheimer Rothenberg displays a nose of sweet kumquats and honey. On the palate, this big, rich wine explodes with lush, silky-textured layers of sweet stones, gravel, spice, and minerals. It is deep, possesses an admirably long finish, and has a wonderful sweet/sour characteristic that is bound to bring a smile to any German Riesling lover's face. Projected maturity: 2004-2014+.

	VM * (11/2002): Apricot and persimmon, sage and mint in the nose. On the palate this has a very smoky cast, with forceful pungency and some of the same icy heat as the corresponding Auslese. Plum paste, citrus marmalade and almond paste. Scheurebe-like mintiness and smoky, salty residues cling to the fruit in the finish. 1 star. David Schildknecht.

	WA 95 (2/2004): The 2002 Riesling Auslese Kiedrich Grafenberg bursts forth with highly expressive smoky botrytis aromas. On the palate, this broad, medium-bodied, satin-textured beauty is densely packed with mangoes, passion fruit, apricots, and a myriad of spices. Rich, immensely concentrated, and impeccably balanced, it also possesses an extensive finish. Projected maturity: 2015-2030.

	WA 92 (12/2004): Spices, pears, and apples are interspersed with smoky minerals in the aromatics of the 2003 Riesling Eiswein Zeltinger Himmelreich. Baked red berries, yellow plums and white fruits are found immersed in molasses in this big, brazen wine’s character. Though undoubtedly capable of lasting for over thirty years, the presence of burnt sugar flavors at such a young age lead me to recommend drinking this effort between 2007 and 2018.

	WA 93+ (10/2005): Coming in part from a small, very selectively harvested parcel that was lucky enough to get early noble botrytis and nearly sufficed for Beerenauslese, the Schonlebers’ 2004 Monzinger Fruhlingsplatzchen Riesling Auslese exhibits aromas of pure lemon, raspberry and peach preserves, musky flowers, and honey; a polished, glossy and creamy mouth feel; insistent animation from fresh, mouthwatering acidity; and a long finish alternating flavors of honey, fruit preserves and fresh citrus. Intensity, refinement, purity of botrytis tone, and interplay of flavors are the key features, and ones whose conjunction is uncommon. Even this wine’s very short-term evolution is apt to reveal new charms, and one should have no worries about following it for two decades.   VM 95 (1/2006): Pale golden yellow. Superripe aromas of dried peach, wild honey and lemon oil suggest an unctuous wine. Then creamy, dense and compact on the palate, with layers of tropical fruits and spices. Subtle, elegant and impressively long. Hard to beat in 2004. Joel Payne.

	WA 94 (12/2002): The demure nose of the 2001 Riesling Spatlese Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr offers delicate floral, mineral, and sweet citrus scents. On the palate, it bursts forth with candied lemons, awesome clarity of flavors, and a noble minerality. Light to medium-bodied and satin-textured, this is a penetrating wine with extraordinary detail and elegance. Additionally, its ethereal core of fruit lingers for over a minute in its focused, highly expressive finish. Projected maturity: 2005-2018.   WS 91 (3/2003): Dense and unevolved, displaying concentrated apple, pear and mineral notes, echoing the apple and picking up a green tea note on the finish. Backed by a firm structure. This needs time. Best from 2004 through 2012. 400 cases made.

	WA 91 (12/2004): Sweet herbal teas, flowers, and pears can be discerned in the nose of the 2003 Riesling Spatlese Graacher Himmelreich. Medium-bodied, silky-textured, and well-balanced, this beauty reveals creamy flavors of spiced linden tea and chamomile that linger in its long finish. A plump yet fresh wine, it should be consumed over the next 12 years. Bravo to Willi Schaefer for having crafted such beauties!
