| WA 92 (12/1996): The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve has begun to close down, revealing more of the vintage's strong, tannic personality than other top 1993s. The wine's opaque purple color is followed by a promising sweet, smoky, chocolatey, licorice, and blackcurrant-scented nose, and deep, powerful, full-bodied flavors. Abundant tannin in the finish suggests this is a Private Reserve to lay away for 2-3 years. Normally these Private Reserves possess a precociousness and silky, up-front richness. Aromatically, the 1993 Private Reserve is rewarding, but after the initial attack of sweet fruit, the wine's tannin takes precedence. It is an Outstanding wine, but more of a long-term prospect. Compared with the flattering precociousness of the 1994, 1992, 1991, and 1990, the 1993 will offer less immediate appeal. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2015. |

| WA 95 (12/1996): The 1993 should be as prodigious as the 1992. It is an opaque purple-colored wine with spectacular ripeness, purity, and potential. Dense, full-bodied, with a chocolatey, toasty, mineral, and blackcurrant-scented nose, this wine has a rich, full-bodied, chewy texture nicely buttressed by ripe tannin. In addition, the wine reveals more noticeable tannin in the finish, particularly when it is compared to the 1992 or 1994. This is another 20-25 year wine. Dazzling wines! |
