| VM 92 (11/2015): Bright ruby-red. Ripe cherry, vanilla and floral pastilles on the smoky, oak-spiced nose. Sweet and supple on the palate, offering pliant red fruit and spicecake flavors with suave mocha and vanilla bean nuances. Quite lively and fresh for a wine from a hot vintage, and showing no excess fat. Finishes sweet, toasty and very long, with smooth tannins making a late appearance. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 97 (8/2006): The inky purple 2003 El Nido, which comes from 26-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines (70%) and 61-year-old Mourvedre (30%), was aged 26 months in new French and American oak barrels. It exhibits leathery, creme de cassis, and pain grille characteristics, additional tannin and body, and a formidable palate. A wine of extraordinary extract and richness, it will be a target for old timers and reactionaries who will feel it is too internationally styled, but it is an eye-opening wine from an area better known for large cooperatives and mediocre quality. It should evolve for 15 or more years. VM 91 (10/2006): Inky violet. Explosive and exotic scents of blueberry, boysenberry and cassis. Broad, deep and beautifully concentrated, with sweet dark fruit flavors complemented by an exotic array of maple, honey, marzipan and dark chocolate notes. A strikingly rich, deep wine, with a ripe, almost candied tone to the finish. But today I find the Clio purer and more energetic. |
