VM 94 (2/2014): Deep ruby. High-pitched aromas of red berry liqueur, cherry pit, lavender and allspice, with a zesty mineral nuance adding vivacity. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering vibrant black raspberry and floral pastille flavors that become richer and spicier with aeration. Silky tannins give shape to the strikingly persistent finish, which features sappy dark berry and fruitcake qualities.
WA 93 (10/2013): Reminding me of the 1992 and a resounding success in the vintage, The 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins is a seamless, elegant and beautifully complex effort that’s worth seeking out. Offering up notions of sandalwood, sweet cherries, pepper and exotic spice, it is medium-bodied, elegant and silky on the palate. Finesse-driven, with terrific complexity and nuance, this beauty is already accessible and a joy to drink. Enjoy it over the coming decade or more. |

JD 93 (9/2011): Drinking beautifully and showing just as well as it did a year ago, the 2008 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a huge success for the vintage and possesses a silky, elegant profile, as well as pure, 'drink me now' style. Garrigue, kirsch, herb, and leather all jump from the glass and the wine is medium-bodied on the palate, showing good balance and plenty of length. While still youthful, this doesn’t seem to be holding much back. While I’ve no doubt it will age gracefully, perhaps even up to 12-15 years past the vintage, there no harm in drinking these today and I would shoot for consuming bottles over the coming decade.
VM 91 (4/2011): Bright ruby. A heady bouquet displays fresh red berries, sandalwood, dried flowers and a hint of baking spices. Creamy in texture, with lively acidity lifting sweet red and dark berry and candied rose flavors. Becomes sappier with air and finishes with very good clarity and lingering spiciness. Avril thinks this wine will surprise people with its ability to age.
WA 91 (10/2010): Vincent Avril fashioned one of the finest 2008 Chateauneuf du Papes of the appellation. Made from a classic blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and the rest an assortment of permitted varietals, it exhibits a dark color as well as a bouquet of lavender, kirsch, licorice, loamy balsamic notes and hints of roasted meats and herbs. Evolved by this estate’s standards, it is an elegant effort with surprising density and richness. I actually prefer it to the 2005 (which was The Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year). The 2008 should drink nicely for 10-15 years. |

| JD 93 (8/2010): One of the few domaines to produce a special cuvee in ‘08, the Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is medium weight with spicy dark fruits framing subtle graphite and mineral aromatics. Medium bodied and fresh on the palate, the wine displays good acidity, a straight, compact texture, ripe tannin and a classy, long finish. While this lacks the depth that this cuvee normally delivers, the elegance and class on the finish are superb. Drink over the next 10 to 12 years. |

JD 93 (3/2011): As I said in Issue #5, the 2008 Domaine du Pegaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Reservee is a resounding success for the vintage and one of the top wines. Showing a beautiful, focused bouquet of smoked blackberry fruit, old leather, peppered steak tartare, and loads of spice, the wine is medium+ bodied on the palate with solid concentration, rich, yet firm fruit, and an excellent finish. This classic beauty should be relatively short lived by Pegaü standards, but should nevertheless impress for at least a decade.
VM 89-91 (2/2010): Bright purple. High-pitched aromas of raspberry and cherry, with a sexy floral overtone. Juicy, focused red fruit flavors are framed by dusty tannins and pack a good punch. The floral note repeats on the finish, which is refreshingly brisk and nervy.
WA 89-91 (10/2010): The 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee was about to be bottled at the time of my visit, and it will certainly be one of the better wines of the vintage. By the standards of Pegau, it is not a massive wine nor will it be terribly long-lived. However, this estate has an incredible track record in off years, so I would not be surprised to see this wine exceeding readers’ expectations in 10-12 years. |
