VM 87 (1/2000): Medium plummy red. Open nose combines red plum, redcurrant, tobacco, cinnamon and earth, plus hints of chocolate and licorice. Round and gentle in the mouth, with good balance for the vintage but only moderate depth of flavor and structure. Fairly tannic finish, but the tannins are fine. Will provide early pleasure. WA 87-89 (2/1999): The 1997 Chateauneuf du Pape is an evolved, forward, richly fruity wine with medium body, and plenty of smoke, pepper, Allspice, black cherry and Provencal herb aromas. It is seductive, round, charming, and sexy. The wine reveals pepper and spicy aromas. Because of its fragility, Daniel Brunier intends to bottle the 1997 early to preserve its attractive level of fruit. This wine will not make old bones, but it will offer delicious drinking for 6-7 years |
